How to Increase Temperature on AO Smith Water Heater

- Here's how to turn up the heat on your AO Smith Water Heater. I bought mine from Lowes Hardware. It's a simple process of just turning a few screws under the removable panels. Be sure to turn off the breaker on your water heater first to avoid the slightest possibility of electrical shock.
Year 2021 and this company could not be bothered with making a knob to adjust water temp. Thank you for this video as I was becoming quite annoyed trying to figure it out.
Totally agree about the knob. Good grief.
YEAH!!! What's the deal with the knob? Fragility issues maybe?
@@peter-peter5929 I'm guessing they make adjusting water temp a chore so dummies don't make water too hot harming themselves or others.
@@jeliarra LOL!!! I think you hit it right on the nose. Makes perfect sense.
The company probably doesn't consider this as a "user adjustment".
The rare time when the first video I watch answers my question.
Thanks so much for the comment Max.
Thank you. I'm used to a gas water heater, which just has an exposed control knob. I assumed there was something behind the panels, but it was helpful to know that I'd need to shut off the breaker & adjust both knobs.
Thank you brother, couldn’t quite figure out where the temperature knob was at. I read the manufacturer’s instructions, but the instructions are vague and not a single diagram. Was a little suprised once I saw the foam and some exposed ground wires, but then It all made sense once I saw your video. Thanks for the video and clear instructions. Great job!
NOTE: the instructions manual says to set both top & bottom panel temperature dials at the same temperature or possible damages can occur.
Thank you for this video!! I have the same one and my hot water only lasts short amount of time and it’s barely warm. Now I fixed it!!!! Without having someone doing it. Thank you so much!
Thank you. This is why i love youtube. Could not find this simple instruction on the AO website.
Helpful, my wife has been complaining about the water not being very hot. Thanks for the tip.

Thank you for this video!!! It was driving me crazy that I couldn't figure this out on this particular unit. You'd think they'd make a simple outside temp knob, but no, you gotta disconnect power to the room, unscrew the panel and remove padding, only to need a flat head to adjust the thingy.. haha ridiculous, but again, thank you for the helpful video! Got my water temp up just fine.
Super glad this helped brother!
Thank you for the easy instructions. Seems easy enough for me to do. Ours is new, and the water does not get hot the further you go in the house. 👍👍👍
Thank you! Just moved into my first home. Very helpful
Thank you for this video, we just changed our heater and the water wasn’t as hot before. I didn’t know we could adjust it. It wasn’t very obvious… I thought we’d have to adjust the actual shower 🚿
Thank you very much now I have a full tub of hot water to rest my old weary bones thank you very much my friend
Should i hit the circuit breaker and turn it off first?
Thank you for the video it will be a great help when we take the cover off to check the temp. Thank you so much
Thanks, I had no idea this thing had TWO adjustments. Issue solved.
Thank you! Have a Blessed day!
Would you know what would cause the water not to heat up super hot even after you adjusted the temp higher
This is exactly what I needed, thanks for helping us all out!!
Probably a dumb question but why are there two temperature controls?
Upper and lower heating elements.
Why do you change the temperature in both places? Is one the safety thermometer?
Water heaters have more than one heating element. They come in stages. Electric heat strips in air handlers do as well.
Great video. AO Smith is so behind in Technology.
What a wonderful and helpful video! Thank you so very much
Does doing this shorten the life of the water heater and cause issues with hard water?
My plumbers said it shouldn't.
I would still rather have hot water lol.
Thank you sir .
My electricity went out during a storm. Is there and if so, where is the reset button located? Temperature settings should’ve been the same but it’s luke warm at best.
Thanks in advance.
Its in the same place as the temp dial that is shown in this video. About 2 inches above the temp dial.
Great! Thanks so much. That's exactly the same as my water heater and it's not like the old ones! 😊😊😊
Thank you so much for this post
Super-glad it helped!
I have the 50 gallons and the water is hot enough but for a short time only. What do I need to do?
Dip tube might be broken
I couldn’t get to the bottom one. The wires and insulation was in such a way that I just couldn’t maneuver. I couldn’t even see the temp gauge. It seemed to be a lot higher at the top then the top temp adjustment panel. What can I do? My insulation was also stuffed in unlike yours
Just rip the insulation out. The one on the bottom was also not cut properly so I couldn't just lift it out, so I had to give it a good tug at the bottom and it ripped right out with virtually no mess, and I can easily put it right back to where it was
What shut off switch did you turn off from the electrical box?
The one that sends power to the water heater
Very helpful thanks 🙏🏾

I got a new electric water heater by AO smith also,
My only issue is my circuit breakers aren’t labeled so I guess I will just turn every last one off
Being that it’s a 220 breaker it should not be too hard
120 degrees is what's recommended from what I have heard. 130 may be a bit high. My wife likes it scalding, but I'm having none of that.
Much appreciated brother.
THANK YOU!!!
Is there an electrical shock risk if I leave the metal panel off my water heater after adjusting? (Dang it this is why water and electric don’t mix 🤬) Gas all the way, next house
YES!
I definitely respect how you say White… Huuuiiight 😂 thanks for the vid 🙏
Big props dude thanks
Exactly what I needed. Thanks
Thanks for the clear directions!! :)
Thank you
Thank you so much
Great video and simple.
Thanks for taking the time.
This was great! Thanks 😊
Thanks man .
Good video, thank you
Thanks!!!
Thanks!
Perfect. Very helpful thank you!
WHY DO they hide the dial like that!?
So people have to call somebody out to do it for them. It's a money thing as usual. Keeps the poor people poor.
Hmmm I’m about to try this
Both of mine are gas :-) BTW: How do you keep your garage so clean? LOL
The bottom thermostat should be higher by a small margin than the top thermostat
cynic 25 why is that?
That’s my issue. I can’t get to the bottom one. The insulation is all stuffed in and not like cut to wear I can lift it up nicely. And the wires are like in front of the installation a little. I couldn’t even see the temp gauge on the bottom panel at all and I literally seem to the middle. What should I do about this ?
Thank you! What a poor design! I just bought a home with this unit in it. Never had a water heater that was so difficult to adjust and certainly wouldn't recommend it now.
This video is 5 years old and this company still has this absolute shitty design. I know because unfortunately it came with our new DR Horton build in 2023 Don't even get me started on DR.
Thank u 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thank you!
Thanks! Super helpful!
Thank you !!!
Thank you very much.
Great video-thank you!
