- No HOT WATER??!! If the water in your house has run cold, you may need to reset the water heater. This video is for electric water heaters. If you have a gas water heater click here to learn how to light the pilot • How to Relight the Pil...
Resetting the water heater is a simple repair that can get the electric tank water heater going again. However, if the water heater keeps turning off, then there's probably another issue at hand.

My kids were impressed that their mom got the hot water heater working again. Thank you!!
Thank you so much!!!!!!! As a single woman who has a tricky landlord situation right now, this just empowered me to crawl under my house (yikes), reset the water heater (I heard the click immediately!), and now I have hot water!!!!
I feel so proud that I fixed this myself and didn’t have to rely on a handyman or call my landlord. ❤🎉
This just saved me! They installed a new water meter in my house and a few hours later I noticed there was no hot water! Thanks man!
Hey this helped me while wife and I were visiting my MIL and she just had a water heater put in and it did this after draining it for winter. The button was flush mounted and well protected against any other wires etc so was easy to do. Thanks so much.
Thank for the help it was exactly what you described. The reset clicked immediately. Just waiting the 2hrs. for hot water.
Great video. Just had to use this in a rental property, brand new water heater I installed the day before and would never think I had to reset it . Definitely gained a sub from me
Great video, Eddie! Much appreciated!
Fixed my heater cause of this thanks man
Thank you for ur help! I appreciate ur making this video
This fixed it for me. Thank you very much.
Thanks for sharing!! My hot water is back on after following your directions!! Thanks again!!
Thank you much for this videotaped!!!!!! Rest button - Done!❤
This has performed exactly as desired ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx8G49mV71sAzUl9shXyLW-r3XgHH9EVh1 . Basically, instant hot water instead of waiting up to two minutes as it was before. I have had this installed almost exactly one year now and just replaced the anode which is pictured. I pulled it out at six months and cleaned the heating element and removed debris. I would recommend a cleaning every six months and an anode replacement yearly. A mild citric acid and water solution soak really helps clean the heating element and tank. It must be fully disassembled to do the cleaning and that is not difficult but could have been made easier with a couple of design changes but no big deal.
Thank you so much, that was it! Hopefully it stays on. 🔥
thank you for the helpful video!
👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿Thank You so much great vid to the point and hit all questions ..Tha k You!!!
You are the GOAT! It worked
Thanks a lot for your help
Happy to help, Yolanda!
Thanks very useful !
Great video. You make us look good when pretending we know what we are doing out here. ❤
I just replaced my hotwater heater today with an ao smith waterheater. I followed instructions filled take with water and ran hotwater faucet to get the air out. Wired the waterheater then cut the power on. No hot water after 2 hours. Press the reset button still no hot water. Then turned the temperature up to 150 still no hot water. Any suggestions?
Thanks Eddie!
@Eddie Helps Homeowners.....My bottom element was bad,so I replaced both elements and thermostats.....My electric water heater never tripped my circuit breaker nor have I ever changed the temperature in the 2yrs I've been living here. Why all of a sudden it's doing the samething after replacing the elements and thermostats?
Heard the click and water sounds afterwards hopefully that fixed the issue thanks for the video.
I have a hot water heater electrical. I'm assuming that if I have 220v at the elements that there is power going to elements and should have hot water. Correct? I can tell the power is going through the element as I have the left wire on the left screw of an element and I remove the right wire. Test, power at left screw / wire and the screw on the right is hot when wire is off showing that the power is going through the element. Why then do I still have no hot water? Can current flow through the elements and not heat the water? ie..bad element? Or is the continuity always broken on a bad element? Also....if I turn the water temp to lowest setting and that setting is below the current water temp...does that shut power off to the elements where I won't detect power at the element, then when thermostat is turned up to a higher water temp position, I should hear a click, and that is power being sent to elements? Corect?
Thank you 😊
What if the reset doesn't click ....only have luke warm water ... remodeling bathroom ...moved my water heater twice ..worked fine after first move ... second move hot water on off now just luke warm ....? Ideas .. ?
Hi, hope you got a minute to read this please
Just wanted to know why the reset button on that water heater is so different to mine?
I have a
Thermann 250thmb136
Manufactured 2016
it has 258 storage capacity and 250L hot water delivery
Thought I also mention that I'm in (Australia 🇦🇺)
I dont have a bloody clue about this so excuse me if it's too much or not enough info.
I'm not a happy camper at the moment I got no hot water it's freezing down here in Oz
So watched your video and seen the red reset button and spun out. Mine has a tiny little hole ( meaning I had to use a bloody toothpick mate to push it in )
I hope it works or I'm looking at 1800 for a new one 😭 & can't afford it.
When u get a moment could you please let me know if that's normal size for that brand.
Thanks mate I appreciate it
Worked!!
How long does it take to turn on after reset?
I moved in to a new apt and I had turn the water on and it was super stinky how do I fix this ?
the reset button does't do anything for me, I tested both legs and I'm getting power from the black and power from the red wire at both the thermostat and the element top, is that a faulty thermostat?
Thank you.
Subbed and thank you😊
Thanks for the sub, Sean!
Im getting electricity to the top wires but not the bottom wires. Help!(side mounted unit)
Thanks
I appreciate it
Thank you so much brother it’s work I appreciate you so much❤u are man
So I'm just curious, I have an electric 50-gallon AO Smith heater, I replaced both thermostats and both elements but even after that, the heater doesn't seem to be turning on, I also made sure that the breakers weren't tripping.
Did you solve the problem? You usually need to turn up the water temperature so the new thermostats and resistors kick on. The. Turn it back down to 120F.
My breaker box has nothing labeled (so annoyed), can I just turn off all the power in the house to be on the safe side?
Absolutely do that. Fist tho your hot water heater is ALWAYS going to be on either 30 amp breaker or 4p amp breaker depending on the voltage of your tank. For instance mine is 2500 watts so it's on a 3p amp breaker. If yours il above thet it's most likely on a 40 amp. Either way, there are only 2 or 3 MAYBE 4 of these super high amp breakers in anyone box. So, what I did was I shut one off. Came and took a reading on the top thermostat. If it's 240 you didn't find the right one. It won't read anything when you find the correct breakers. Only 2 or 3 more times I'm positive you'll find it. You can judt have someone else stay at the hot water heater and tell you when the volts fall. Or you can set your multimeter to the sound option has a don't eith sound waves and is only a tiny little sliver of your multimeter. Usually, towards the bottom of the circle of different ratings. Hope this helps. Mine had none labeled when I moved in and now I have ALMOST all of them labeled and numbered to the rooms. 😊

Breaker started tripping, so I had an electrician run tests on the water heater. After running the tests on the upper/lower elements and thermostats, only the lower thermostat showed as failed. I replaced it, but the breaker tripped again after about 6 minutes. While the tank was still drained, I replaced the lower element, even though the one in the tank looked and tested good, and also replaced the anode rod. Filled up the tank and the breaker tripped again after 5-6 minutes. Shall I just go ahead and replace the upper thermostat and element, or could there be a problem someplace else?
@Eddie Helps Home Owners
Good job
I just bough a NEW water heater and it’s pulling tremendous amount of electricity and no hot water coming out at all. Where should I look first? Please Help!!!!!!
We have been dealing with scalding water at time, as well as hot water running out fast, last night we came home to no hot water at all.
Should I do the reset? Or should I have someone come in to replace the elements and thermostats?
What if there is no click when I push the reset? No hot water after I pushed.
What if there's no click when I press the button? Am I supposed to hear the heater come on after I press the reset button? I felt no click, and I hear nothing happening. But since it's an electric, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to hear something as we did on our gas ones before we moved into this place. I can't seem to find the answers I need in this regard anywhere, and this is a very bad time for it to go out. :(
Hi same problem here. Did you manage to fix this
We ended up just going ahead and buying a new water heater. :( It was, I think, 13 yrs old anyway. @@wahidrahman8014
If you don't hear it click. It's probably not tripped. It may be a different issue.
Same here no click
I use a wooden dowel to push that reset button, just in case.
Thanks!!
You know electricity can conduct through wood right? Use something with a rubber handle rubber isn't an electrical conductor
That’s what I’m about to do too😂
Haha I guess I said yolo pressing with my finger 😂
I used the screwdriver 😂😂
Did all the steps and I can’t hear anything running or starting
Why do I have to wait a couple of hours to get the hot water?
Takes a bit for 50+ gallons to heat up
@@wef0711 I thought it was more to it than just that. I was thinking the heating element would need take a bit to reset or something. Thanks for the response.
Terrible volume, can barely hear you talking and when you turn sideways, nothing.
use headphones, i hear him just fine
Thanks for the vid. Maybe get a microphone or speak directly into the camera. Could not hear when you were speaking to your water heater.
I also find it crazy how so many videos online, people will say its 90 percent the elements.. and then I hear you say its majority the thermostat. Crazy.
Almost all the time he's speaking clearly direct to camera.
Seemed like a perfect video to me. Apparently. Martin Scorsese is watching UA-cam repair videos...
@@j.a.1785 martin is harsher than me by far
@@j.a.1785 LOL!
Sorry, but you take over 4 minutes to say what could be said in about 20 seconds. And constantly repeating things.
My water heater shares a breaker with my well pump 🥲 how do i turn my electric water heater off manually so my water pump can fill it without frying the elements?
