Water Heater Running Out of Hot Water? Here's Why
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 бер 2018
- Is your water heater running out of hot water in just a few minutes even though its a 40 gallon tank? It used to last a whole lot longer? In this video I explain that your problem is likely one of two things. (Though if you are extremely lucky you might have both problems together.) You might have a cracked or broken dip tube or the mixing valve behind your shower faucet is leaking by. Watch the video to see how to find out which one it is.

Man this dude gets straight to the point very knowledgeable I learned more in these four minutes then I have been trying to learn from these other idiots making 45-minute videos
This is THE ONLY video on here that actually gives you answers!! Very simple and straight to the point! Thank You!
You're welcome! Glad I could provide some answers!
Excellent information
Uhhhh, he didn't give hardly any answers. "Water heater running out of hot water" He didn't say "Hot water not as hot after a while", or "Hot water not as hot as it usually is". The title of this video suggests the the hot water is fine but then runs out earlier than it did before. This is usually the lower element going bad, calcium covered so it doesn't transfer heat well once the cold water starts mixing, and sludge over the bottom element. Those problems are more common then the non stop blather about mixing valve and the dip tube. If the dip tube is snapped you'll notice after a couple minutes that it will be less hot than when you first got hot water but You'll have warm water for a looooonnnng time.
@@mrmwman1248 where are your videos?
Fast, straight to the point, concise, easy to understand, awesome! Thank you!
If I could watch a video like this on every single topic that I was ever confused about, I’d understand everything in this world and be a genius.
Thank you for the well explained and thought out video on this. Helped me a lot!
So very helpful! Thank you!
Liked and subscribed. A video that actually explains how to trouble shoot, THANK GOD! I was nervous to replace my mixing valve because I wasn't sure if that was the actual problem, but it for sure was. I never thought to just use common sense and if everything else works than it most likely is the shower valve (mixing valve to be specific). You sir are a gentleman and a scholar.
Thanks for your video, I replaced my dip tube and water heater working like new again, great thanks.
This was put together nicely. Thank you!
Great video, saved me a service call. I am remodeling my bathroom and the plumber put in a new valve body for the tub/shower and was going install the valve after the tile guy finished. However, the hot and cold water to the tub weren't shut off, so the hot water flowed through the valve body to the cold water pipes, leaving me with the situation of only a few minutes of hot water before if got cold/warm (exactly like your "leaking shower valve" description).
I simply turned off the cold water valve to the tub and it fixed the problem until the plumber installs the valve into the valve body.
Weird situation.
Very well done. You need to move to my home town. We have absolutely no appliance repair people here!
Wow! Thank you so, So, SO much!! Really appreciate you taking time outta your day to make and post this. I'm so thankful to've found it. FINALLY, a person who understands that we ain't plumbers and we're looking for answers. And you actually made it simple to understand!! Much loves to you and yours from a gotta-t-be -miss- fix-it cuz the matinence men around here are bout useless. 🤗
The home I want to buy comes standard with a tankless water heating system and their motto is “endless heat not instant heat” 😂 I cant wait! That one of my features that sold me on the house
Right on brother! Your troubleshooting explanation on this issue was absolutely "THE BEST" advice in it's simplest form. Attaboy pal, you got the point across to even the most novice who have no knowledge on this topic. Thank You! ++Peace & Rock n' Roll++
Kind of you to take time to share and video your knowledge. Thank you sir.
Excellent logic. Thank you. If it’s the bathroom faucet, is it the valve in the wall or the faucet cartridge that usually fails.
Thank you Jay, you are not just a stock on the shelf.
My water is not getting hot in my garden tub
you have a great videos!! Thanks for sharing. Can you explain how to know why is there just low presure hot water in all the house and how to fix it
Thank you very much! You explained very clearly! Very helpful!
Love the video!! Explained it perfectly!! Thank you!!
Thank you so much… right to the point and easy to understand.
Dude, great video! I've fixed a couple of problems watching your videos. Thank you!
Awesome, we got our answer in the 4 minutes it took for our hot water heater to turn lukewarm to cold. Hot pipe hot, run water...4 minutes cold to the touch. Thanks a bunch!
Happy I could help! Thank you for leaving a comment!
Well done man you are really helping us
Bro, I just bought a new old home, and I'm having this problem. The only thing is it happens with both my showers. It's hot for five minutes, then done! So my question is, if it's both showers and not the Faucets, what do you think the problem is. I changed the top element a few days ago, and the old one was nasty and busted. I'm looking to change the bottom one today. I figure if the top looked like that, then the bottom can't look any better.
Your video was great, one of the best all the way around. Clarity of the video, explaining how to fix the problems and especially the audio. Great job👍🏽🙏🏽
Hot water less and less in shower, I hold hot and cold water on top of the hot water tank, temperature of both pipes were the same around 80 deg, Is it deep tube cold water broken ? Thank you very much for your fantastic video
Impeccable logic. Thank you.
Awesome logical advice. Much apprrciated
Great video & great explanation! I have an older shower faucet with separate valves, where the hot water is never hot enough, and soon just cold. I'm guessing it's going to be the valve stem... Ever run into that situation?
God bless this man, saved my life!!!
Quick and easy to understand and figured out my problem to this video.
Nice video. Right to the point. What are your thoughts on 30 minute shower. Should this make it cold for everyone else. Seems like there should be plenty of hot water in tank.
Amazing video thank you easy to understand
Thank you so much what my plumber cant explain you did in this video
THANK YOU FOR SHARING

I appreciate you!
Bro thanks you explain that very well!
Thank you God Bless You for doing this videos
Excellent video. Thank youuuu!!! 👍👍✨
Very good video. I Will try this out. We just had a new water heater installed a few months ago and now the hot water doesn't stay hot that long and the pressure is not is completely dependent on if someone is running water at the same time. Any ideas.
Excellent video!!! Thank you!!!
Great video, thank you!
Thanks so much. This helped me so much !
great advice sir!!
Nice video - how do you decipher if you have a faulty mixing valve?
I like the way you show us how to evaluate the issue. The different ways hot water issues arise surprised me from watching the video. Thanks
Thanks for your video I think i find the problem.
Good stuff bub. Thanks for this
Very good video. Thanks. My tank is just over a year old. plumber can't find an issue. electrician can't find an issue. two showers, each with separate hot and cold knobs. Water is extremely hot when first turned on in the AM. But lasts about 10 minutes at best. next person has to wait for it to reheat.... any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.. Thank you..
Thanks for sharing
Thank you, this video was very helpful to me.
Awesome! Glad you found the video helpful :)

You're welcome! I appreciate the nice comment! May the Lord bless you and family as well!
I have a 40 gallon gas A.O. water heater that runs hot water for about 20 seconds and then it's just luke warm and that's the case for all facets in the home.
Sounds like dip tube but the hot pipe coming out of the water heater is still hot even though the water coming out of the facet it lukewarm. The sink has a hot only knob so it's not a mixing valve
Thanks 😊 for the video. How 🤔 much approximately will either of those problems cost to get fixed by a plumber?
Thank you that's what I needed to know
First, I would check the pressure relief valve before you go ripping apart the shower or switching out thermostats or mixing valves. It could simply be the plumber didnt let the air out of the tank/lines.
Super helpful video! You mentioned how the problem would be the dip tube if I can hold the tube for longer than 10 seconds... how would I go with taking care of that specifically? Thank you!
Thanks for teaching love your video.
Thank you ! that was a great explanation. very helpful! awesome -
Great video.
Very helpful video I appreciate you uploading it. Thanks
That has been my problem for a while. I experience lukewarm or cold water at some faucets, especially the main shower. I have to physically push and hold the handle of the valve toward the hot side to get any hot water. The inner stem of that valve was replaced several months ago because it leaked and was partially deteriorated from corrosion, but I was unable to remove the outer sleeve with it due to being stuck inside the valve body. Since then, the valve will work its way open and I have to keep it closed by wedging an old broom handle between it and the opposite wall of the shower. I've watched other UA-cam videos showing how to remove stuck Moen valves using special tools or other methods, but before that happens, I need to investigate why water doesn't flow from the head of a second shower. Water flows from that valve when I remove entire valve (stem and sleeve), (did some troubleshooting) but not from the showerhead. Possibly some obstruction between the valve and showerhead? Need to fix it first and have it functional before I tackle the main shower. Also, in order to get hot enough water at the kitchen sink faucet, I have to open the main bathroom sink faucet (turned to hot) to which in turn it runs cold water during that time. The same happens with the main bathroom sink faucet and having to open the second bathroom sink faucet in order to get hot water at the main bathroom sink. I attempted to drain sediment from the water heater a few months ago and found sand clogging the drain valve. That evidently was caused by the corroded underground galvanized pipe, which was replaced, from my well which was pulling in sand and debris a couple of years ago, causing all kinds of problems, and I failed to realize that the tank should have been drained at that time. I've seen other videos that show how to drain a tank when the drain valve is plugged. Just need to implement that soon. I willing to bet, that after watching your videos about dip tubes, that sediment and possibly a faulty dip tube could be the cause of all the problems. Also purchased a replacement anode rod and was planning to replace the old one but can't seem to break it loose. The age of the water heater is going on ten years.
Just buy a new one. That sound too much of a hassle!
@@pollodormido2 I did, back in August last year.
I have a newer install with new piping (not copper). The cold line is much warmer than hot line. Mixing valve or dip tube? Local co. wants to install a thermostatic mixing valve.
This actually helped
As a professional handyman, I get my share of calls about hot water not lasting long enough, and almost every time, it's due to a malfunctioning lower heating element. The problem is solved when I replace it.
Carl Stewart thanks for you comment. I’m having this exact same problem in both restrooms. Once the hot water goes out we have to wait about 1hr or so before the hot water comes back. We don’t run both showers at same time because that will make the water run out faster. Will try this first, thanks again.
@@PeteR-wh1tw There's a way to test the elements to know for sure if they're bad or not. It's very simple & easy. Here's how: ua-cam.com/video/LxnZQZm9YcI/v-deo.html
Also good to know. Thanks.
Ok well
I replaced my 50 gal hot water heater with a 40 and now I can’t fill my tub even half way before hot water turns cold. Wtf
How can we test our heating elements to make sure both are working?
Excellent video. I wish you can diagnose my problem.
My shower hot water lasts only about 5-6 mins. Changed to new Rheem electric water heater, plumber changed one of shower mixing valve thinking that is affecting the other 2 shower water. Unfortunately not enough hot water in shower continues. Any idea what might be the source of problem? Thank you.
thanks
Hello, I have a rheem water heater about 3 years old the water is always is very lukewarm even if I set it to very hot. Sometimes both the hot side and cold side seems hot. My heater has a mixing valve connecting the hot and cold side (in Canada this is mandated to ensure there is no scalding)😮 to ensure there is . I tried opening the cold side. But the guide tube in the cold side is kind of deep and doesn’t easily come out. So I put it back to the way it was..How do I know whether the issue is with the dip tube or the mixing valve above the water heater? Would appreciate your insight. Thanks.
James Wooden, can you help me clarify whether if there's 2 different types of heater? Other household's heater is seemingly instantaneous and unlimited. Meaning, one's turn on, there will be hot water flowing in and there is no time limit to it. The heater that I have at home is required to be on for 15 minute in advance before it gets hot and literally runs cold within 5 minutes.
Is it because mine is an older type of heater that causes this issue?
Effective and efficient
My cold side is much warmer than my hot side. Both are easy to hold for as long as I want. Any thoughts on this?
Excellent explanation sir! Thank you !
Great advice! Thank you!
Very clear explanation! Thank you!

I just installed a new gas hot water heater for my tenant on the second floor of a 3 family house. Now he has little water pressure in his shower and it’s not very hot. The kitchen and bathroom sinks are good? What do you think? The pressure and heat are for the shower and tub in the shower are both low. And again it’s fine in kitchen and bathroom sinks.
Thank you. Will check mine today.
Got a question for you, I install a new rheem water heater there is hot water but everytime I turn all my faucet there is no hot water coming through
Hi, I had a new water heater replaced in Dec. 2017 as well as a bathroom renovation. I had problem in the beginning when my shower only had cold water coming out of it even though my plumber said there was nothing wrong with the valve. We got it working eventually, but had to tear up the new tile in the shower. Now, I am running out of hot water before the end of my shower. I did what you said, went down to the water heater and grabbed the hot pipe. It was very warm, but not so hot that I couldn't grab it for long. I checked all my other faucets like you suggested, and they are very hot. I hate to tear up my shower again. Any suggestions on what to fix first?
Thanks 🙏, your video really helped me out. I actually had a leak in shower. Thanks again.
Thank you very much! This was explained well :)
You're welcome! Thank you for leaving a comment!
Word of Advice TV You're welcome!
Good video, can u run out of hot water because of sediment. Can removing the sediment restore the efficiency of your water heater thank you
Great video with helpful information! I’m currently having this problem with a AO Smith 50 gallon electric water heater 2013 model and installed the same year. Seems like the dip tube is the issue. If so would total replacement of the heaters or dip tube replacement be the better option? My last heater lasted about 20 yrs and I was blindsided by having this problem in 8yrs from a unit that I believed would last at least 10-15 years smh. Thanks again for the useful insight!
Good video ... if you check the hot water coming out of other faucets, like a sink, you can tell whether it's the mixing valve or not.
Hi these are great tips. I have a question for you. The water heater was replaced a couple of months ago when we got the house. We’ve been having trouble with the jot water. The tip on the the pipe was excellent- what if both Hot and cold water pile are warm? What do you recommend?
Raquel, doubt you solved by now, but... the hot out-feed will most likely be hotter than the cold in feed, HOWEVER the cold in-feed will feel warm to the touch at the nipple and first foot or so of pipe, especially warm if it's been sitting for a bit. The reason for this: water in the upper tank is generally hotter, and the cold feed nipple and that first foot of or so of pipe above the tank is subject to heat transfer and slowly warms that part of the pipe. So, if you haven't used the hot in your home for a bit, that water in the cold feed is sitting idle and warming. Try this... run a minute's worth of hot water in a sink, then immediately check that cold pipe just above the tanks, you will notice that it cools down. That's because a water heater spontaneously refills with cold as you draw out the hot, and you are removing all that idle warmed water at the end of the cold feed and replacing it with fresh cold water from the City supply. The dip tube feeds that code to the bottom of the tank, over the burner. TRIVIA... just like hot air, hot water also rises. It's a common misconception that heat rises. "Heat" itself is not the same as hot air or hot water, so heat alone is not subject to properties of a gas or liquid, rather heat radiates equally in all directions. If it's radiating through air, or in a tank of water, the warmed air or water will rise, taking some heat with it.
Thanks 4 use full Information... Thank you!
Lol I'm disappointed, ain't no jokes at the end of these water heater videos! xD I'm teasing!
What would be a condition of bad heating elements?
