    • @Mize77
      @Mize77 3 роки тому

      Cost would be determined by the condition of the paint. As an example; wash, clay, wash, iron remover, wash, compound needed areas and polish entire, then the prep spray. On my f150 took me around 8 hours, with no hurrying. The coating took 25 minutes. Second coat was less than that. Now add in trim and rims. I would charge you have to charge you $1000. But I would never pay that as I as well as you should enjoy the process and be proud of the final product!

    Hi Marcus,
    I Recently learned about this product and your channel from Chelsea A2D, then watched Pan, and Apex and decided to purchase it. It was a joy to apply and remove and the results are amazing. The paint feels super smooth and has a nice gloss, I also applied it to all of the black plastic trim. Because I have a 1 car garage with limited room to go around the car I had to apply it outside on my driveway (Temp High 60's to low 70's partial shade) I know not the recommended method, but I did park the vehicle overnight in the Garage to protect it from the massive Pollen bloom we are going through over here on the East Coast so it can cure properly. Looking forward to viewing more of your content.

    How does it do in sunlight.. asking for a friend

    • @MarkusKleis
      @MarkusKleis  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Ry! This should definitely be on the friendlier side of things as far as performing coatings outside as a mobile detailer, for example. I would still recommend trying to at least limit it to indirect sun, like being under a canopy, for example. If it is winter, you could likely do this even in direct sun without issues. The amount of time you would wait before leveling/removing would be closer to 30-60 seconds.
      In any case, if the paint is so hot it burns your hand - that is too hot for sure. Slightly warm should be fine.

    Hello Markus.

    I have to say you were by far the best teacher about this line of products and i will watch your new content on your own channel every time.
    Your knowledge is a very good thing in the detailing industry.
    Can i just ask you if this paint coating can be applied outside ? I don't have a garage so i'm stuck with Sio2 water based product but i would like to put this one on my car on summer.

      Oh man, thank you very much! These comments make my day. I will do my best to continue to educate at the highest level possible!
      As for applying outside, yes, you can. My advice is do not apply in true direct sun, or if the surface is actually hot to the touch. If you are outside but in indirect sun, that should be fine. Just be careful about dust and be gentle when wiping.
      It would be a good idea to wait and do the M122 wipe on each panel right before you coat it - that way you could remove any possible dust or pollen.
      Hope this helps!

    • @MarkusKleis
      @MarkusKleis  2 роки тому

      Yes, it will come off in the first wash. My recommendation would be to use a clean microfiber towel and just water and immediately try to gently remove any excess you come across before the first wash. Do not aggressively rub it and cause swirls, just gently wipe the area clean.
      Then wash at the end of the first week and you should be good to go. Let me know if you have any issues and I will try to help troubleshoot it for you.

    Can is use Meguiars Hybrid Paint Coating for wrapped car?

    • @MarkusKleis
      @MarkusKleis  2 роки тому

      Yes, you can. I would only caution that it is hit or miss on matte wraps or surfaces, but should be safe for most satin wraps. The key is applying to the applicator not the wrap, and then massage it thoroughly to get even application.
      If for some reason you do see uneven patches on any matte or satin surfaces, apply more product to the applicator and re-work that area immediately and then immediately remove the residue without waiting.
      But for any normal gloss wraps or PPF, definitely works awesome!

    Subscribed. Didn't know you had a channel Markus. Sad to see you not part of Meguiars but hope the future is bright for you. This product seems like an interesting product. I might think of offering it as an "entry" line coating. I didn't enjoy using Cquartz lite. It felt like stuck on syrup to remove and that was using 2x2 sections wiping off immediately after application. Crystal Serum light, Gyeon Mohs and even Cquartz U.K 3.0 was MUCH easier to remove in comparison(ironic, to say the least since these products have far better durability compared to CQ lite).
    This may be irrelevant but how does surface prep smell? Does it have some scent or is it just a strong alcohol smell? Is there enough lubrication so that you dont marr during this process?

    • @MarkusKleis
      @MarkusKleis  3 роки тому +1

      I hadn't touched this channel in about 10 years as I really wasn't able to when I had certain jobs. But I am back and will be cranking out a video per week from here on out! And yes, I was sad to go as well - truly was an amazing place with awesome people and I loved being able to create products there but I needed to challenge myself with something new.
      As for the product, I do think this makes a lot of sense as an entry-level offering for sure. Definitely easy wipe-off and slick right out of the box. I have to keep telling the clients not to rub their hands on the car lol.
      As for M122, we intentionally did not add fragrance as fragrances are oils and that didn't make sense given that we wanted this to remove that from the surface. That said, it has a mild chemical smell - not super strong, and not predominantly alcohol to my nose. This is a mixture of a few things, it is not simply IPA - this behaves very diferently than IPA in that it does add a lot of lubrication for the wipe-off. We specifically wanted to provide more marring protection compared to other offerings out there, including IPA.
      M122 is also safer in terms of not staining sensitive plastics or hot paint/plastics (like when you polish it and hit it right away). It's also really awesome for removal of compound and polish residue that is dried on or sticking to the paint.

      If you can give it a full 24 hours of no rain, you should be fine. My advice would be to just avoid chemicals for 5-7 days. If you do get splash-up of gunk from the road, I would gently take a damp (water only) microfiber towel and gently remove it as soon as possible. Just be gentle and you should be fine.

      @MarkusKleis  3 роки тому

      Hah, good to know - thanks for the tip. I know I answered you on FB about the heat, but for others, there isn't a max per se, but in temps above the high 80s you will need less cure time. Over 100 you probably only need to wait around 30 seconds, especially if you have a lot of airflow with fans and such. I would just spread the product a little longer, wait less time when done applying than usual, then remove quickly. also make sure to immediately apply the second coat if you are doing 2 coats.

    Wowww so much information, great job.
    However I had the thought of reusing the microfiber cloths provided in the kit.
    Some thoughts that come to mind:
    -Cutting up the cloths into its folded squares, using one set (cloth #1) for the initial buff and then the second set (cloth #2) for a final/levelling buff. My reasoning for cutting them up, so as to limit the time a cloth has been contaminated with the coating to be exposed to air/oxygen. Once a cloth feels to be used up, then dunking it into a very warm bucket of strong solution APC or laundry liquid (microfiber safe). What are people thoughts and answers, including you Marcus?

    • @MarkusKleis
      @MarkusKleis  2 роки тому

      Hi Ricardo,
      Thank you very much! As for the towels, the coatings I have worked with do not cure fast enough that you would need to cut the towels in my opinion. I think folding into eighths should suffice. It typically takes over an hour to cure to the point that it might make a towel or applicator a scratch risk.
      As for tossing towels into a bucket with a mixture to keep them from clogging/curing, I know a lot of folks do that with success. I have not honestly spent a bunch of time testing to find the right chemical specifically for HPC, so you might have to test a few and report back. I will do the same if I find a good solution (pardon the pun, hah!).

      I think it will eventually - it comes down to how much risk companies are willing to take. For smaller companies with fewer assets, it's less of a concern as they aren't the usual targets of lawsuits. People always go after the big guys with deep pockets first.

    • @MarkusKleis
      @MarkusKleis  2 роки тому +1

      Hi ea0529,
      The first thing I would try is a wash with an iron remover in that area and see if that helps. Secondly, if you have an acid-based water spot remover, try wiping the area with that as well. Then thoroughly wash/rinse. *Sometimes* coatings can become "clogged" with minerals or fallout and one or both of those processes can help clean and uncover the coating.
      If neither works, then simply wipe the area with M122 and re-apply to the full panels in question. It will bond where the coating is severely weakened or missing, and will wipe right off areas that are still strong.

    • @MarkusKleis
      @MarkusKleis  Рік тому

      Hi Ace,
      I wouldn’t add any toppers for at least 24 hours - if not a week. You risk mixing the products and reducing the durability of the coating.
      Also, IMO you won’t really increase the gloss anyway. If you want maximum gloss I suggest putting extra effort into the prep before the coating (namely the deep cleaning, compounding and polishing) as the coatings and toppers do very little to effect gloss (in fact many reduce it) compared to a properly polished surface.
      Most of the toppers and spray products aimed at “increasing gloss” do so by filling imperfections in the paint with oils, silicone, etc. But if you properly prep then there shouldn’t be anything to fill.
      Make sense?

      Hi Adan, not sure I understand. Do you mean what do you do after having it on your car for 1 year? If so, evaluate how it is holding up with a wash. If you seem the beading going away slightly, use Hybrid Ceramic Wax or Detailer to boost it. Or if it is really starting to fade hard, then perform a chemical decontamination with an iron remover (I suggest D1801 for the cleaners) and you can also use an acid-based water spot remover to remove any minerals that may be covering the coating.
      Evaluate again. If you still feel it is weak, then simply repeat the same process you used the first time and add a fresh coat.
      If you have bad swirls you want to fix, then you would need to compound and/or polish, too.

      Hi Jeff,
      Glad I could help! So one of the downsides to HPC is the fact that it has such high contact angles nearly every product out there will actually LOWER the performance if you top HPC with them. This is especially true for the first 6 months or so when HPC is still fresh and strong.
      The good news is that there really is no need or benefit to topping it during that time. Anything, and I mean anything you top it with will literally fall off the first time you wash it.
      But if let's say you wash it and want something to wipe it down at the end to remove minor water residue etc, then I would personally use either M799 or Hybrid Ceramic Detailer as they are the closest to HPC (still lower).
      If you use D156 it will not hurt anything permanently, but it will reduce the hydrophobics performance a little bit until you wash it. Frankly, you may not even notice it so feel free to try it and see what you think. It's getting pretty nit-picky at that point...

      Hi John! Congrats on the new Tesla, should be a fun car! I use HPC over trim, paint, PPF and vinyl without issue, but as you noted on glass it is not able to form the direct bond in the same way it can on the other surfaces without a primer. As of now, Meguiar's does not offer one that works for that application. I would get a dedicated glass coating for that.
      As for the wheels, I got a solid 18-24 months on my wheels with HPC. The strong chemical resistance properties seemed to make it a great fit for wheels. I also found I could usually just use car wash soap and gentle microfiber "brushes" or mitts to clean the wheels instead of harsh chemicals. I also used D1801 (Meguiar's pro iron remover and wheel cleaner), as well as the alkaline wheel and tire cleaner and they didn't seem to harm it (at least not in the first year).

      We did quite a bit of testing with various style applicators when developing this and actually found the experience much more enjoyable with the supplied applicator than with micro-suede. It just seemed to spread better.

      If you get anything beyond dust on it during the initial cure, it is better to get it off than leave it. I would suggest using a microfiber and water only. Try to use reverse osmosis to soften anything (ie get it wet and let it sit and soften before wiping). For the same reason you want to avoid introducing a bunch of foreign chemicals before it fully sets up, you also want to avoid having things like bird droppings or bug guts sit and mix in as well. Bugs in particular can sometimes really wreak havoc.

      Hey oldporkchops,
      Sorry for the delay - last week was SEMA week and I was BUSY. As for your concerns, what I have learned is that generally speaking, the larger the company, the more careful their legal department is since they are a bigger target for lawsuits.
      Since Meguiar's is owned by 3M, it makes them a big target - so they go beyond what the law states today and actually try to predict future restrictions years in advance. This makes many of their products uniquely safe.
      This is of course not to say smaller brands can't make safe products, or that they don't make awesome products - but if you are strongly prioritizing safety, I would personally avoid small brands as they are more likely to lack the resources or needs to be as safe on the formulation front.
      As for HPC, if anything, just wear gloves. There are no PFAS chemicals in HPC, and it is a very safe formula. No need to worry about contact after cure at all, either. You will not find another product on planet Earth with the performance of HPC without PFAS.

    Thanks for the video, very helpful. I wasn't clear on your recommendation for plastic or vinyl trims and cladding, go for it, or avoid it? And last question, how about rims, would it help with brake dust?

    • @MarkusKleis
      @MarkusKleis  3 роки тому

      In a nutshell, my personal experience is that this does well over most trim. I put it over headlights, taillights, side markers, etc and even pebble textured plastics and I am getting great durability. I don't know that it will bond well to camera lenses as they are some type of glass I believe, but it won't hurt it to try.
      As for rubber moldings, I have gone over those and had no issues, although it doesn't seem to bond quite as well there. Just make sure you wipe it evenly.
      Lastly, for wheels it works well - I have had it on my Raptor satin black wheels for one year and they all still bead water. As with on panels, make sure to perform regular washes and it should hold up. I suggest sticking to either basic car wash soap, or something like Ultimate All Wheel Cleaner or D1801 Wheel & Paint IRON Decon for cleaning the wheels. Avoid Wheel Brightener or the Chrome Wheel Cleaner as they contain a chemical that can hurt the beading.

      The most sure way to prep the surface would be to use a mechanical process, even a light polishing with something like M205 or Ultimate Polish to clean the area, followed by the M122 Surface Prep supplied in the kit. If you do not have a polisher, it can be applied by hand as well for this purpose. You will not get much correction, but it will clean and remove some of the wax.
      If you want to knock it all down even more, hit it first with either D2002 Iron Removing Spray Clay or D1801 Wheel & Paint Iron DECON. If you use an iron remover, do that first, then polish, then M122.
      That said, the HPC will actually still be able to fight through a pinch of remaining contamination because of what is in the formula and should still work at least 90%.
      Let me know if you need more info or if you are good.

      Hi Justin - any chance you can share some decent photos of the condition of the paint? Generally speaking, coatings don't tend to perform all that well over severely oxidized or near-death paints. They struggle to bond and the lack of even surface tension can really inhibit the water behavior. That said, depending on the condition of the paint - a 1 step paint enhancement might do the trick to prep the surface to receive the coating. As for filling it, it will do some, but really just lighter swirls and such.

      Yes, you can coast over the coating once the hydrophobics die back enough. If you have been using detailers and such I would do a wash, then a chemical decon (D1801 is ideal because it has additional solvent cleaners which help remove waxes and such), and then simply apply the coating just like the first coat.

    • @MarkusKleis
      @MarkusKleis  2 роки тому

      Hey Maksym, I think you maybe made a typo and meant to ask “during the curing period,” and if so, the answer would be to avoid using ANY chemicals for the first week if at all possible. Introducing other chemicals to the coating before it fully cured could potentially cause slight damage and reduce the coating performance.
      Now, after the first week you can start to use spray waxes or sealants as they will not be able to damage the coating BUT keep in mind that most products will have worse hydrophobics than the coating itself, so when you cover up the coating with something inferior it temporarily masks the coating and will perform like what is on top.
      M799 does have a higher contact angle than D156. I personally stick to M799 or other Hybrid Ceramic items if I need to use something on top of HPC.

Many fresh/strong coatings (including Hybrid Paint Coating) will reject other coatings if you allow the initial layer to fully cure - but over time as they degrade they tend to then accept toppers again.

      Without toppers of any kind, just simply washing on a reasonable schedule (every week or two), you should still see a year or more. The main thing that hurts coating durability is being applied to a surface that is either already severely oxidized or degraded, or filthy. Secondly, not keeping it clean over time. The contaminants can settle in and inhibit the coating. UV is also a big one.

    • @MarkusKleis
      @MarkusKleis  2 роки тому +1

      Hi AP! Thank you for the kind words! Good questions. My recommendation would be to avoid the windshield as you may get chattering issues with the wipers. You can apply it to glass, but it doesn't bond the same way to glass as to paint or plastics, so expect less durability. I have personally used this right over all exterior trims without any issues of any kind. Just make sure the surfaces are as clean as possible ahead of time. For the glossy plastic, do a quick light polish and it should help improve the durability and final appearance. As removing the coating, it has extremely high chemical resistances, so it would actually be safer and easier to remove with light polishing than trying to use caustic chemicals. Strip washes won't even touch it, unless you use a strip wash like Wash+ with abrasive power. The good news is that you really shouldn't need to do this - you cannot high spot this coating the way others will. So I doubt you will need to do that. Lastly, yes, you can use toppers over it (they will not harm it), just know that for quite a while (usually 6+ months), they will struggle to bond. So they will apply, but once you wash the vehicle, the combination of chemical and mechanical cleaning action will likely 100% remove them. Also, know that damn near every topper out there will actually have WORSE self-cleaning properties than the HPC itself, so topping it with Beadmaker for example will temporarily make it perform worse from that perspective. It may also increase how much dust and pollen are attracted to the surface. For those reasons, I personally stick to products that I know have similarly high contact angles (M799, HCW, HCD). Hope that helps!

How do they compare with let's say a product like 3D One Hybrid or Rupes Uno Protect. I know you may not have used them. Just throwing it out there as a comparison. And I know I threw multiple questions. Just giving you more ammo. Thank you!!

      @@brooklynpratt The problem is anything abrasive (including Wash+) will risk at least light marring, which would lead to you wanting to polish most likely. Can I ask why you are so concerned with the removal aspect? I ask because I really can't think of many reasons why you would need to remove it - but it would be helpful to understand your concerns.
      As for 3-in-1, it is a fantastic product but very gentle. It's a great maintenance wax for folks that wax every 3-6 months as it has light polishing abilities, some good filling and great gloss. It would be a little less aggressive than ScratchX 2.0, and leave a better/glossier finish on average. Either can be applied by hand or machine, but ScratchX is really meant for isolated scratches rather than doing large areas. Ultimate Compound would be a much better option for a friendly whole car swirl and scratch removal.
      3D One is probably a bit more aggressive than ScratchX, but not by much. It is easy to use, but know it does definitely fill. I picked some Uno Protect up, but haven't had a chance to use it yet.

      @@MarkusKleis Awesome response. Thank you so much! With regards to why I would maybe remove it (not need to but want to): Having a product on my car (2017 VW Golf R in Oryx White by the way, beautiful pearlescent) for a year plus kind of scares me. Not from a fear stand point. Scare might not be the appropriate word. I just love to apply product after a wash. For me it's very satisfying putting on the finishing touches. The products I use are the ones I mentioned above, Griot's Best of Show Spray Wax, Beadmaker once in a while, and also Griot's Best of Show Detailer, Megs Ultimate Quick Wax, Xtreme Solutions Topper...anything that provides some protection and some gloss. And you'll notice they are in spray form. Again, very satisfying and very easy. My first delve into protection was TW Ice Seal N Shine. Loved it. Then I wanted a more "waxed look" hence the Griot's. But of course all of these are weeks to months of protection. Not a year. The only reason why I am applying HPC is purely curiosity for the product for the past year and your videos with the latter being very compelling. The interesting thing is I haven't found any videos or reviews on HPC at all, which plays into my fear (actual), especially when Fast Finish, all be it a different chemistry, was such a hit with plenty of videos and reviews. So having a product on the car for a year, and probably more because my car is not driven all that much, without being able to apply some sort of topper would be sort of a bummer for me even with all of HPC's pros.

    • @MarkusKleis
      @MarkusKleis  2 роки тому

      @@brooklynpratt Great explanation - so knowing that, I have some good news! :) You can use any and all of those spray toppers over HPC. None of them will harm the coating. The only two things you need to know is that A.) Nothing - and I mean nothing - will fully stick for quite a while (6+ months). That means when you use those spray toppers they will apply and sit on top and add whatever properties they normally give EXCEPT once you hit the car with a wash mitt and soap, they will come right off. So if you want to use drying sides and stuff - go for it! You just have to re-apply after each wash.
      Two, keep in mind that whatever sits on top dictates the hydrophobics and slickness. So if you top HPC with something with a lower contact angle (like Beadmaker or Seal and Shine), it will temporarily mask the coating and only perform like the topper. So just pick a topper wisely. The griots one you mentioned is solid. You can also use any of the hybrid ceramic items - pro or consumer.

      Hey Marty, when I didn't have D114 around I have used D155 Last Touch. I had a horrible experience with a strange lint issue during application. I did switch to other microfiber clothes due to loading of the supplied ones. Prewashed chem guys quality micro fiber. The lint appeared to be on top but mixed in with the coating. Very frustrating. I had to walk away and I hope it is not one year + permanent in the finish. Any suggestions?

    • @MarkusKleis
      @MarkusKleis  3 роки тому

      Microfiber towel lint does not cause any issues at all. A coating is about a micron thick - the microfiber lint is no where near the size it would need to be to actually mix in and interfere with it. You have nothing to worry about. The fibers will be gone the first time you wash it.
      Usually when a towel leaves lint it is either because the towel was washed with aggressive chemicals or dried with heat and it causes it to release the fibers.
      The other cause would be that there was either too much coating used (people tend to use more than they need) and so it cling to it since it was so thick.
      Either way - nothing to stress about. You can either wait a way and wipe it again with a clean towel, or wait to wash it.

      I have not specifically tried those products, BUT, what I do know is that for at least 6 months (or longer) the coating is so strong that nothing you top it with will properly stick. As soon as you perform a contact wash it comes off. You can add it on there and it will sit on top, but it won't last like it would on bare paint.

    • @MarkusKleis
      @MarkusKleis  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Ronald, with any type of true coating you want to fully clean the surface so that the coating can bond directly to the surface (paint, plastic, glass, whatever it is). You have two options for how to do this - one is to compound or polish (or compound AND then polish) the area as this will mechanically clean away existing waxes or sealants, and then you need to use a Surface Prep product (like what is included in the kit).
      Alternatively, if you do not want to perform a paint correction and you know you have fresh/strong protection there, use a Wax & Grease Remover (it's a solvent-based heavy chemical cleaner) and simply wipe the area. I would do two passes. You can then check the area with water to see if the beading is gone. If it is, you can proceed to use M122 and then apply the coating.
      If that is confusing, let me know what questions you have and I will try again :)

      Hey there, this was stuff I was going to mostly cover in the follow-up video with the first wash. That said, you *can* use something like Hybrid Ceramic Detailer, but honestly when the coating is new the toppers will be very temporary as they will likely not stick through the wash process.
