  • Over the past year, I have been saving recordings of hawk attacks. This is a compilation video of the best hunts that ultimately end in failure. THERE ARE NO BIRDS OR SQUIRRELS INJURED!
Watch our live animal cameras live here - / birdwatchinghq
SUPPORT Bird Watching HQ by shopping my favorite bird feeders, squirrel-proof items, books, etc at my Amazon store! geni.us/bwhqstore 😀
I have had the live cameras in my backyard since September 2018, and the hawks have NEVER caught a squirrel on camera.
The species of hawks seen are mostly Red-shouldered hawks, along with a few Sharp-shinned and Cooper's hawks.
These birds of prey beautiful to see when they make an appearance.
My favorite clip is #25 when the squirrel fights back. :)

While not cooperative, Accipiters and red-shouldered hawks seem pretty clueless. Totally anthropomorhizing, but get a clue.
Agreed, those squirrels are way chill.
It's almost like the hawks are just 'half-heartedly' trying.

Really appreciate the disclaimer about no animals being harmed.
Otherwise I would love missed out on this incredible footage.
My area is saturated with Peregrine Falcons and I wonder if the outcome may have been different. I've seen them sit in trees for hours but only recorded one dive.

    • @labalia30
      @labalia30 Рік тому +1

Peregrine falcons (almost?) never attack birds on the floor, it would be too dangerous for them as their dive is so fast. Hawks like these Cooper's hawks are much more used/able to catch birds and mammals on the floor, in trees, and are able to maneuver the obstacles. Moreover, here we have mostly young hawks, it seems, which are less able when it comes to catch their preys. That's perhaps why they come to feeders where it seems to be "easier" to catch something than in a normal garden or forest.

They're teenagers guys. These are young hawks and they just haven't figured it out yet. As a falconer, I'm feeling sorry for the hawks. If they don't break the code, they're not going to make it. 70% of wild raptors die in their first winter. 90% will be dead by their 3rd. If these young ones can figure it out, though... The squirrels will need to watch their backsides. I raise pigeons. I allow the to free fly during the day. I watched one young Cooper's Hawk trying to make it's way in life and that summer my pigeon population went from over 40 to 14. That's the price you pay for letting pigeons be pigeons and appreciating that the hawk needs to eat too. That hawk survived it's first winter btw, because it became a successful hunter at the expense of my flock. I hold no grudges.

As beautiful as the hawks are, you do get a new appreciation for the limping, flea ridden city pigeon when you see them from the 20th floor. The aerial acrobatics they can perform when pursued by a hawk are nothing short of stunning. It is so dramatic sometimes that you are expecting a David Attenborough commentary to start up in the background. :)

Thanks so much for sharing your awesome video!
I’ve had a feeding station on my deck for about 7 months now, and suddenly, within the past 2 weeks, I’ve seen 2 failed attacks by a hawk. I did not even think of this!
I have a bamboo-like shade covering 2/3 of my deck, plus there is string lighting that the finchies, sparrows and hummingbirds love to play on… but I think it is these things that trip up the hawk. His wing span and flying capabilities are clunky in this little alcove. I still might string up a small, fine mesh net near the roof, over the feeding trays.
The first attempt last week freaked me out, but I saw it clearly. Finchies, Sparrows, Mourning Doves, etc all reacted quickly… they all fly off suddenly as a group, which caused me to look, then I saw the hawk dive in, then u-turn around the shade to my rooftop. I came out to face off with him 😁.
I thought for sure my birdies wouldn’t return, but they did within 5 minutes 😆, same today. So I figure this happens anywhere they are feeding, perhaps especially when feeding as a group. I’m looking into other safeguards, any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

@Ricky Robyn Yep. It's the stupider cats that think they can do anything about squirrels. Smarter cats know it's futile, and squirrels know this. The hawks are clumsy because they're juveniles. Just learning how to catch their food and haven't completely figured things out yet.

The hawks here on Long Island have learned that bird feeders are buffets... with squirrel on the menu. Squirrels were not harmed... just taken for a ride I'm sure by my local hawks. As someone commented... these are mostly young hawks learning the art of the hunt. Great video... thank you.

It's almost embarrassing for the hawk. He just stands there staring at these squirrels who just ignore him and pick at the nuts. It's as tho he is saying "Are you kidding me?" :)

Mid-summer there are lots of younger "inexperienced" newbies...especially 18-20 ... at one point in #20 the hawk jumped like he was scared of the squirrel...lol
You have a really good set up and great variety of feed. Mine is similar... have you had turkeys? because of all the corn?

The squirrel is not taking the hawk seriously. It's like "come on, don't disturb me. I'm eating... OK, I run around the corner, satisfied? Well, I'm eating anyway, no matter what you... No, not me, I'm away anyway. When will you ever learn that you don't have a chance? I'm much quicker than you" ;-)
Well, sometimes things are different I guess...

Me too, I know its nature but I feel like I am making my poor birds bait. I hate when the Hawk is here. I have about 20 crows that always let me know. They do their mobbing thing. I also have morning doves and the rock pigeons. They are easy targets. 😡😡

I know what you mean when you say you feel like feeding the birds is making them bait. I feed the birds here in Southern California and there is a small hawk that takes out the small doves and it’s not much bigger than they are. Sometimes it happens right in front of me 🙁
