We clean our nest boxes out every spring and put in a big handful of cedar shavings as a base layer. It fills much of the void in the box, cutting down on the birds labor. Cedar is also a natural deterrent of lice, mites and insects such as ants which have been known to swarm nests and kill baby birds.
When our large, hairy dog sheds her winter coat, we put the fur in elbows of trees in our woods. We sometimes see a bird flying by with Winnie fur in its beak. It makes us feel good knowing her soft, warm fur is cradling new life.

I went home and cut all the hair off of all of my My Little Pony’s and spread it all over the yard. The following year my sister and I found a nest in one of my Grandmothers bushes that was laced with blue, pink, and green hair. I will never forget that.
My grandmother told us girls to nvr brush our hair outdoors. Birds will make a nest out of it and that will give us headaches. I think it was a tale to keep girls from brushing their hair outside. It might be too enticing to men. Hair was nvr cut and reached past waist.

The mother and her children are almost completely protected from precipitation and wind, meaning that they shouldn’t problems fighting the cold. Furthermore, it also protects against storms and inclement weather from damaging or destroying the nest. 2. Protection from Predators. This is not full protection since a Cat or a Rodent could reach inside, but against larger like birds of prey, this works well. A Hawk or Eagle will be too big to fit through the hole and their legs are likely not long enough to grab the bird, eggs or chicks if they stay at the far corner. It is also very hard to identify as a target for a high flying bird scanning for prey, who may likely see this a just a wooden box unless they see the mother and/or chicks entering/exiting the house. 3. Structural integrity. A nest in a tree may be damaged or destroyed if the tree branches starts moving, and even if the nest is in intact, the eggs/chicks can fall out in extreme conditions. The house is secured to the trunk of a tree or to an artificial post that ensured that the house stays still, even in suboptimal weather. And because it is contained and rigid, the nest and it’s occupants should remain safe even if the mount moves.
I like how it tests the wood for sturdiness, brings in sample plant-flooring to see if it likes it, takes out the samples it doesn't like, settles on what it wants and the returns to renovate then move in.

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. It's not about following the law - perfectly, as it's impossible - it's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and ask Him to help us in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way. NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER xx If you have any questions let me know
Absolutely fascinating, especially how they select materials, she starts off with straw like sturdy materials for the base then selects softer yet firm stuff for the 2nd layer, and then selects very soft insulative materials, like the cotton brambles.
@Inda Now right, every animal has its instincts that its ingrained with, but to watch them actually use those instincts in a natural uninterrupted platform...amazing.
@@robert9595 Reducing animal behaviour to instincts is actually a rather limited way of thinking about these conscious creatures. They do have their simple thoughts and luckily they're far less destructive than the self-crowned kings - humans. That being said they are amazing to watch, yes. There's so little we know about what's going on around us.
@@HHalcyon then what drives them to build a nest? No one is "reducing" anything, it's a scientific fact that animals have instictual behavior and act upon that, and i don't care about any of that emotional crap being pushed in colleges.
I love how she checks out the box for safety before moving in. There's an egg at 4 min. Daddy feeding Mum. Stomping in the new stuff - esp. the feathers. This is ENCHANTING! Thank you.
For me, I love how on Day 4 the bird has a change of heart. "Nah all these twigs are crap. That's it I'm starting over!" And just tosses everything out.
Granted, I’ve had a rough week but - this almost brought me to tears. I don’t know, how tirelessly she’s working, how slow the process is, it took her so many days to even just fill up the floor.. but she was so hardworking & diligent, I loved it 🥹❤️ the kind of influencer I’m looking for 😅
Also let’s just take a moment to admire how efficient she is. I’ve taken care of a baby bird before and it is not a simple task. They’re incredibly high maintenance. Being so small herself, she has high metabolic needs. Yet she manages to build this nest, incubate the eggs, and feed her young without starving to death. That’s heckin’ impressive.
@@Altorac Yes parents often lose their first young. That's not failing, there's a reason they can make more. It would be a failure if they were biologically incapable of reproducing after the first and let it die.
They live in a different pace from us, I think that's what makes it hard to take care of bird chicks. Humans were not made to feed their young every hour of the day, birds were =)
I'm an ole lady now. You just made this lady so dam happy. I have been housing and rescuing birds since I was a little girl. I haven't done it for years, I miss it. Very much. I have always wanted to see these little mamas and how it looks from the inside. I was in tears. Thank you so much. You made an ole lady so happy with this beautiful video.
@LeoS you really can’t be calling someone a little boy when this lady is reminiscing on her childhood and talking about something that makes her happy and you felt the need to insult her out of nowhere for no reason? you’re literally projecting that you clearly don’t have a very good life and you’re mad at the world, yeesh 😬 how to tell everyone you’re jealous of someone else’s happiness. if anyone’s a child here, it’s YOU.😐👋🏻
Animals are so amazing and so much more intelligent, industrious, etc, than many ignorant humans think they are! Watching this video reinforces that knowledge and this little Blue Tit is wonderful! She's so busy, precise and careful about what she does. She's obviously a great mum! Adorable. I miss seeing the Blue Birds in the garden of my former home, where there were lots of other birdies too (Robins, Thrushes, Blackbirds,, etc).
It's not intelligence or industry when it's instinct lol every bird builds the same kind of nest according to its species and programming. You should study biology it's eye opening 😉
An entire month and a half gathering materials i never thought birds were that sensitive at looking for the perfect home wow Edit: Holy Jesus thanks for the likes i guess
This is really cool. I never really thought about a bird bringing things into a bird house, then deciding "nah fuck this bundle in particular" and taking it out again.
Incredible how they live their little bird lives… these birds may be abundant on earth, but completely unique throughout the universe. So precious, & beautiful.
She studied everything about the inside, judging how much material she would need, then went to work. Wonderful having the camera to share this experience with the rest of us. Hopefully you have a number of nests built and installed in different areas.
I never even expected that it took them this long to build a nest. But it makes sense when you think of how little they can carry, and how they still have to go find food and stuff.
The info box says that they usually take 1-2 weeks, and sometimes only a few days. So we are watching a perfectionist ^^ but I agree, never thought about how long they take to build their nests...
@@lisakoe8085 Yep she kept re-positing a feather all the time till she was like nah doesnt fit here XD A good mother that cares about how her young should have it
I don't quite understand why it took so long because the birds that make a nest👀 in the tree next to my walkway outside they start in the morning there's two of them and they're done by the evening and the next day there's four or five eggs in it
I’ve been watching a bluetit fly in & out of my bird box for weeks building her nest. It’s now feeding her young. It’s humbling to watch nature. The effort they go to is staggering. How do they know to do it? It’s just wonderful. This video gave me an insight into what’s been going on in my own garden. Thank you for sharing.
When I was younger our neighbours were always getting a sparrow family in their backyard making nest annually... So one year what they decided to do was let them make their nest and then they burned it down... And burned it down again and again for 4 times... I was so disgusted and angered by this inhumane act that I let my German Shepard mow down and tear their prized couch to smithereens when they went to the store one day... The poor mama bird had to lay her egg on bare stone but then we brought the egg to our house and provided a proper alcove to make them a nest... Since then they come to our house each year...
@@benjackson6260 Oh that's so cruel! Sparrows come to our balcony too for making nests frequently, probably more because of the steady supply of bird food (actually bought for our pet birds) we leave for them, and we'd never dream of doing that! Your Shepherd did the best thing ever😂
The first one, the one that makes the nest is male. Smaller (without multipe eggs in his body), he's also responsible for foraging for food while the female is incubating the eggs.
This is so cool! I love how she checked the place out at first and inspected everything just like any of us do. I like birdhouses. I feel like they can be safer than nests sometimes. You don't have to worry about any babies falling out or getting thrown out in rejection. They also have plenty of room to move around and play. They stay out of the elements and that keeps them warm and dry. I didn't know how long it took to build a nest though. I definitely gained more respect for the process and building of their nests.
it’s interesting to see how many times she moves the materials, discards then for better ones, and really really builds the nest to be the best place for her eggs, compared to how pigeons will legit just lay an egg next to a random twig and call it a day lmao
Yeah, Pigeons in a nutshell... I constantly nearly run them over with my bicycle (!!!) because the lazy rats of the sky can't be bothered with evading danger.
This bird gives us a life lesson that I can summarize in three key words: patience, discipline and consistency. She did nothing out of the ordinary every day for those 46 days. She did nothing beyond her strength. But the result is extraordinary and important for her and her egg.
I'm only 1 minute in and I'm already fascinated. The thoughts & considerations in those early moments before the bird commits are amazing. You can almost hear her thinking - Is it solid? Is it safe? How many trips will I have to make to make this a home? Are the schools good? Is there a Pottery Barn nearby? 😆
Love this comment😂educational yet funny. I had the same exact thought process…I just put a bird feeder in my yard & I love watching them, they’re amazing creatures
Yes, I try to support the little wild birds, by leaving my hair on trees for them to add insulation to their nests! I've got long hair, and whenever I wash it, I moult like a labrador! So, I gather it up, and leave it on trees. Apparently human hair is very insulating, and I love the thought of it nurturing baby birds...
@@411Adidas I realise you're being tongue-in-cheek. But, just to explain, no of course not! I'm a vegan. The point is that hair is a natural resource that birds can use to insulate their nest. Birds often find animal hair to weave into their nests. It's the same principle. I like to do my bit to give back to the earth and her creatures...

Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans
EVER xx

I was so disgusted and angered by this inhumane act that I let my German Shepard mow down and tear their prized couch to smithereens when they went to the store one day...
