The amount of midi and audio routing is insane for a live setup. I can’t believe they travel and sets up that much gear for every show. Pretty brave considering how much could go wrong
If i think about it, these guys applied the philosophy of jazz musicians into electronic music. Making music live, kinda just listening and improvising, responding to each other's musical ideas. And oh boy how wonderful it came out to be...
These came on my radar a couple years ago, and I've always wanted to see them live as the videos I seen of em look amazing. They are on my "must see live" list for sure. They were in Manchester recently........ so gutted I missed my chance. 😩
These guys came to San Francisco and played a big (For San Francisco) day-time party on the Bay it was ridiculous. (In a good way) the ENTIRE set was recorded on video and is on UA-cam. F'ing BANGER of a party. it's called "Octave One - Live @ Sunset Island, San Francisco 2013" check it out.
" Black water "still one of the best dance tracks out there want to see a dance floor loose it play that track . Also my first secret weapon when i started djing so there is some extra love there since it saved my ass a few times and lit the dance floor spark .
ok i know most of this gear ... but i have one question ... what are the stands they use to make all the little desktop synths float in the air like that? probably some minimal laptop stand but which one??? i've searching for one that can do that
Just downloaded one of these guys songs for the first time the other day (black water [alter ego vocal mix]) and low and behold you guys do a How I Play on them. Keep the series coming! Absolutely love these videos, I've watched them with friends plenty of times and gotten some good conversations going about setups. Are these scheduled? Can we expect one once a month??
We're going to do a bunch more of these this year. It often relates to artist availability and a lot of other factors - but you can help! Tweet or message your favorite artists and ask them to do a How I Play with us. If they already know the series, it makes it a much higher priority for them.
Just buy a laptop and have done with it, save yourself 2 hours setting up.... Only joking that's a beautiful central nervous system you have created and I imagine it sounds amazing.
Well sort if, if you put it like that. But see it more as they are doing it live and old school. It's more difficult to have the timing right and get it sounding right on the fly. Takes a lot more skill. Without guys liek these pioneering this sort of thing, you probably wouldn't have FL.... Kinda like Technics Sl1210's and the origins of beatm matching etc. Without it, traktor or serato wouldn't exist. Got to show repsect to the hsitory of your scene. Especially when they had it a lot tougher. (it also put off those withtout the real passion, not a lto of peopel wanted to walk into a club with a heavy vinyl box lol)
Reading the crowd has a certain cliché to it in my opinion. Play good music to them. You'll need to read them a bit more maybe if you aren't delivering the goods or you are booked for the wrong crowd. Just my opinion
I should add as well I've seen more of these "on the fly" live sets than I need to. They can be great but also can sound like what they are, someone figuring out what to do for a bit. Balance of both is good. Think these have that.
Stop playing those gigs. Throw away the music you don't even like. I stopped doing those type of gigs....and I became a happier musician as a whole. Are You the dj that is the people's bitch.. or do you make the crowd yours!?!? I want them to leave and tell everyone about the night they just had! Do you think Carl cox looks up? He has bangers...then he has the ones he looks up cause he knows the crowd is huge! So it goes from 100.... to 110. ... You'll figure it out.

Great Duo...Octave One one of the best live acts!!!
this is still the craziest live set up ive ever seen
$20000 in music equipment. $100000 in routing cables.
Thats a great story how Laurence just jumps on stage and takes over the mixer and that was that.
These came on my radar a couple years ago, and I've always wanted to see them live as the videos I seen of em look amazing. They are on my "must see live" list for sure. They were in Manchester recently........ so gutted I missed my chance. 😩

brilliant and inspiring
That's a very complex setup, but wow what a sound
Hmm not sure if they are flying a spaceship or making music. Maybe it's a cosmic techno time machine of some sort. Definitely needs more looking into!
This is also the cockpit for the Nostromo.
Very cool to get some insight into these fella's workflow
5:02 nice kick
Nice to watch, real techno artcraft
these guys make you feel like you do nothing as a "dj"...; incredible.
Would they consider using a thru box?
Anyone have the Id for that guitar track?

Great guys!
🙏🖤🎵
Very interesting!!
How long does it take to set everything up?
dope
This is sick !!!!
And there are still people who pay to see live aoki, diablo, guetta etc and call them djs, producers, artists
Bruh gatekeeping dance music is so shit. Let people like what they like
Anyone have the name of the end song?

holy ass. this is damn impressive!
They are in someway also Jazzmen. Their music doesnt sound like Jazz. But they play it like Jazz. They are real creators.
Legends =)
geniuses
Next EP pls get Satori !!
+DJ TechTools
you had me lost at Hi. lol
I bet it takes about 4 hours to set up on stage in a club then sound check it all !
That is soooooo much stuff in front of you, think might be a case of overkill but for the right reasons
They've effectively got a live production studio on stage with them. It's amazing :D
DJ TechTools truly

nic.e.....
This is the correct way to create techno. No PC. No Ableton. Straight hardware.
ChasingDogma ugh..like saying the correct way to travel is on a sailship from 1800s
Well , his yt name is chasingdogma...so , atleast its a coherent thought . But i agree , i like a mix of both hw and sw.
eyyyyy emx1 gang
I didnt understand nothing...

They use the monotribe ahaha that's reassuring
always keep it simple! ahahahahah
Thanks for telling your DJ mixing story. DJ Hard @ facebook.com/DJ1Hard/
what in the literal f*ck is this? I can’t understand a thing man this guys are too advanced lmao
iron neck ;)
More of a techie than a "real" DJ, because they are not using Vinyls!
sooo it's a physical, more complex, and expensive version of fruity loops
Well sort if, if you put it like that. But see it more as they are doing it live and old school. It's more difficult to have the timing right and get it sounding right on the fly. Takes a lot more skill. Without guys liek these pioneering this sort of thing, you probably wouldn't have FL.... JohnMorrisonMusic I agree with that 100 percent lol😂
Actual kind of a simlair price laptop is 1200 interface is 300 to 500 and fl it self is like 400 so yea it not much more expensive
Edgy
I guess reading the crowd doesn't matter anymore...
They're not djs, they're performers. Think of them more like a classic rock band playing their own material.
well why don't you try "reading the crowd" and managing to come up with something on the fly using all of this gear...all night long.
Reading the crowd has a certain cliché to it in my opinion. Play good music to them. You'll need to read them a bit more maybe if you aren't delivering the goods or you are booked for the wrong crowd. Just my opinion

Completely overcompensating ...
