We all know how you play... Like a God!
Never stop Richie.
exactly
One of the best comments in the world.
This comment makes me come back over and over again!!!
for years now
using the laptop only to load the tracks hmmm, he manipulates everything through the rest of the setup tho
This guy is the perfect example of how DJ is a real art and not a guy with an oversized ipod. This is the guy you should take notes from.
hella tight ghee keep it up
agree
It's like he's doing a cooking show.i love it
Jeremy G he is
Beardyman does the best cooking show
If there is a DJ channel out there that does videos, live streams, and tutorials of DJing and how-tos a la the Food Network, then I'm there.
Richie is more than a DJ, is more than a producer. He is a completely artist.
Tomás Godoy whoopehoop
This man talks like a damn scientist of one of my favorite music genres, the way he expresses when talking about his music is the best thing I could have ever seen so far in an artist. Simply the great richie fuckn hawtin.
Hello Richie. I love your techno sets. Especially the “Decks, EFX & 909” cd. I saw you play in Dublin, Ireland about 20 years ago & really enjoyed it. You did the stereotypical ‘taking the audience on a journey’ dj thing & we all loved it! From what I remember you had the crowd in the palm of your hand & that set is still talked about today within Dublins techno community! Thank You for the Good Times 👍👌😎
Was that the gig at the Ambassador?
Seen him all over the world and never been disappointed TIMEWARP this year was next level the guy gets better and better if I could carry that model 1 everywhere for him I would
This Timewarp, his closing set was... mindblowing! Immensely good, i was speechless at the end, he literaly saved the best for the end.
@@dvdcastav banged it
One of the biggest compliments I can pay King Richie is that no matter how off your face you are, you'll always remember his set, or at least parts of it.
I saw him in NYC, at Limelight I think, around 2002 and he did that thing he mentions early in the video where he says you might recognise a part of a song. The one I heard that night was a sample of Dead or Alive, You Spin Me Round and of course it was completely unrecognisable from the original but I distinctly remember hearing the chorus. then what felt like 20 minutes later it came back in again and I was left wondering to myself, what is this magic!
I like the way you make gestures with your hands while you explain how you combine the sounds. It is like you see music in dimentional proportions.
lol
It makes him look like a pretentious twat imo
yeah between us ..... its only one or two dimentional sound....sorry , its monohobimal .-)
take a look at floating points visuel works on his shows, this is similar to what you're saying :)
I can see music notes unbelievable as it sounds. I see the colour of the instrument sounds
I'd dance to a metronome after 3 pills.
epic comment
For sure! I've also heard a bunch of generators that played some dope tracks.
ok:D
Hehe
@@Pppeeepppiii truly epic
Perfectly described!! I love how he invites us into his art. Each persons process is their own, but every artist can throw their own angle on it. You may be inspired in a different way once you feel the energy of the environment but your tools, approach is pretty similar. So inspiring!
Been listening to Richie since 1998, he just gets better, he's smart and passionate. Very inspiring human being.
Loving this... many thanks Richie. The result of a good level of intelligence combined with almost 3 decades of experience. Awesome. Something many strive for. Congrats for the dedication and thanks for sharing this and much more
"Decks, Efx, & 909" still one of the best and most influential albums in my lifetime
infinite inspiration to the style and being open minded to keep pushing the sounds to new ways never heard before to be my own style as well . thank you Richie Hawtin
You do and will rule Richie. Such pure passion and high-caliber technical perception is a great asset for the whole genre.
Never tired from seeing this video..... This man will be in the music books as pioneer from the electronic dj-live performance
I can listen to him explain things all day... such an interesting speaker - great video
there is no dj with more performance than you, and more humility, just the fact that you show how you play says it all, you are a master you are not simply a dj you are a musician. thank you for making me so happy on the dance floor and helping me a lot with my productions
amazing to see inside the mind of this genius! Combining old technology with the new and continuously finding new ways to perform on a stage. If i could only learn this form the master himself!
Wow... He explains it so good that I understand his techniques pretty good I think, but I can't even imagine how to play like this for an hour or so. He's amazing
A lot of "how to" videos by superstar DJs are maddingly vague, not here. Great explanations of what the elements of a mixer are and how to use them get these trippy dj sounds. Thanks so much
Fantastic video Richie, amazing to see how your sets all come together with the different sound and sources!
Fantastic. Huge respect for always pushing forward and beyond.
Richie is & always be phenomenal at creating unique sounds in so many ways. Unlike most DJs that start playing need at least 10-15mins of playing to find their groove then start to get going. ... NOT RICHIE!! He always jumps you into the action from the first minute he's playing. It's a true pleasure listening & enjoying everything he creates. I can vividly remember once he played at Stereo for Halloween weekend. There was a group of costumed puppets dancers that with every move they made fit so perfectly well with the performance. It was as if it was choreographed, when it wasn't at all. Best part was not only how well the sound married the live performance, Richie had no idea what the performers were going to look like let alone how they were going to dance. It was pure magic on so many levels. I think I still have some video footage of it. When I find it, I'll send it to you Richie. Have a spectacular weekend!! Cheers ☺
Proud to say I saw him play live.
What a sound. He is really mastering his tools. The sound is great, he is actually making music with all this.
This was was an excellent video. Thanks for making it Ritchie!
sos lo mas! ojala vengas a paraguay algun dia.
I have a completely new respect for you after watching this video! 110%
Saw this dude spin at city club Detroit maybe 8 10 hour set..... Richie an alien.... Much luv brotha.... Detroit
From our Minds at the Russel in Detroit was superb and sounded amazing. (Thanks to Paxahau, Mike and Jason for the top notch Void sound as well) Rich will always have my respect, and what he has contributed to Detroit and techno worldwide is priceless. Thank you for countless great sets I've had the privilege to hear since the 90s!
Though I'm a couple years too late, that was still a dope talk up about how he plays a set.
This is proper DJ’ing, this guys a genius
Incredible! This really is the evolution of the modern DJ: making new music with existing music. Not just that, but no "songs" anymore! Instead, a complete musical experience. Simply incredible!
I love his enthusiasm 👍✌️
This is exactly how i mash together my freestyle sets.. and one guy once told me its more complicated than its have to be, the tracks are already good unless you picked the wrong tracks to begin with, and you should pay more attention to the crowd...
What strikes me the most; what I adore in RH- is his passion for what he does! (Apologies for my in depth analysis - I am a Psychologist after all-) but one can see clearly through Richie’s body language is this innate drive; this natural passion amd intensity for his art form - that is just so...contagious; so inspiring; so enveloping to me as an onlooker. It pulls me in; makes me want to better myself, my knowledge. I wish I had the opportunity to be imparted with his expertise. However I live in the most remote and isolated capital city in the world (Perth “Westralia “); but the up side is - no COVID here (yet) and an economic boom that allows us locals to live freely to dream the impossible dream. Love to you RH . Just keep on keeping on my friend 🤗🤗😎
I hear he's great at making sandcastles too. ;-)
A lovely analysis.
Charming DJ. Just a legend.
The depth of sound in the mix is awesome!
Damn right. Don't forget, the mixer + audio interface is like a 6 or 7K package. That's insane. :D
Love this.
Just figured out a way to mix traktor internally in a way that somewhat replicated the behavior of this mixer and the DB2/4 filter eq mode. This might be a well known trick already but ever since playing on a friends DB2 I've been missing this workflow, so for anyone who's interested:
Each deck gets its own dedicated FX unit, always on and dry/wet to 100%. Set all fx units to Filter 92. First knob cuts the lows left to right, third knob cuts the highs right to left, and the middle knob sets the resonance. You can completely disregard the standard eq at this point. I just snagged a xone K2 for mixing internally, and i think I'm going to be using this mode with it for quite some time.
Traktor’s filters are awful though so it will really mess up the sound
True musical genius, no other DJ in the history has pushed the technology boundaries like Richie. What an absolute inspiration and creativity to master so many devices simultaneously like this to create one unified experience. Thank you Richie for being such a great musician and DJ.
he has the privilege to do that, but if an upcoming DJ do that, is called fake DJ... is dismissed to a fake one... Fame is not equal to everyone
@@PabloRodriguezwhyCharlieWhy You are right but nothing is handed to you. You have to build a reputation. A new dj as you say has to take the criticism and move forward. Richie Hawtin was probably called a fake DJ at one time
WTF are you on about. Hundreds of producers and Djs in the 80s/90s pushed the technologies. That is how house and techno was invented you total muppet. Jeff Mills was rolling 3 turntables decades ago.
I like the structure and clearity behind all of this.
Thank you for giving an impression of your work!
Richie, the king of Min techno
spicy, nicely seasoned, well cooked. The best Techno-chef.
Very inspiring and clear! The master at work!
Taking it to the next level Richie!!! love this!
You speak about the people and what they feel and see. It’s so sad, that 90% of the people just raise they mobilephones in the air and just wanna show where they are. Myself, I go to the dancefloor, close my eyes, feel the music and dance. 😍
Thats what its all about!😎
Now we need some insight into the mapping of the K2s! :)
I know he controls Traktor and Ableton with it but a closer look would be great!
I've been looking for this for sooo long
Thank You Richie.
A great movie for explain what's Model1 Thank you Richie ! U'r the one !
so minimalistic, there is not even colour in the video
Woah hadn't even noticed somehow, how can I miss something so obvious??
yeh minimal lipstic ,....Socken......so Wandersocken sind das........grüne.....keine Schuhe
wow Amazing!
There is, it's coming through your ears tho....;)
Melea Jacobi plastic man
Well it feels like yesterday when i first saw Richie spin in 1996 with just 2 decks and a mixer in our club. Now look how time has changed.
My personal view for the future would be Richie sitting there with a net of electrodes on his head similar to an EEG - His imagination of sound and melody will then go overr the speakers... Who knows.........
And he does it very well. Just saw him for second time of my life at monegros this yeat. His set was simply fantastic. Thanks for this really
Much respect. Richie performs the true art of being a dj, creating&mixing elements on the go. Most mainstream EDM djs nowadays focus more on the clothes and makeups they put on than the tracks they choose or the way they mix.
You should be immortal Richie, you're a big inspiration for mankind
a DJ i can actually undersatand!
i never did understand guys who wanted to get paid for simply playing other peoples music and then pretending that that makes THEM a star, whereas really what Ritchie seems to do is use his DJ gear as an extension of a recording studio with different channels being faded up or down, and manipulated to make new music.
pretty much the ideal goal of many psychedelic artisits.
excellent.
The MODEL 1, is the one. Set the bench mark, for sure. Great idea keeping this piece of kit analogue as well. Great demo Ritchie, thanks mate!
Damn Richie is the real deal. So many elements in his set, but so fluid
Richie: " I dont want anyone to recognize the tracks too much"
Nitzer ebb: " U wot mate?"
Is there anyone out there that was remixed more than Nitzer?
@@synchromatik does james Brown count?
Or is he just the most sampled .
Nitzer ebb is trash
I love how different his approach to this is from every other DJ
Very nice walk through. Thanks!
Thanks Richie your a great teacher ... and a D.J .... and producer ,,, and your probably a great guy too :) Peace & Love to you and your family and friends
Ok for the mixer,
But I’m more curious how everything it’s connected?
What’s the soundcard ?
How many channels out?
Whatever the Mac he's using uses. This is just an ad for this mixer and for himself. Mixing isn't that hard especially nowadays.
RBA-PRODUCTION any soundcard will work bud
Andrew Pomorski is it internal sound card?
No, I mean an external soundcard to route the traktor tracks to a mixer
RBA-PRODUCTION I use NI Audio 8 for that purpose but as I said, anything will work just fine
can it play crysis ?
This made my day
Noody can play Crysis, once You play Crysis at 60 fps and whole world will collapse...
Good DJ , great businessman all you aspiring DJ's and producers take notes. Keep up the good work Richie.
Amazing and magestic machine Richie congratulations!!!
Ableton is the best DAW!
MODEL 1 sure looks great, but ≈ 3700 € for a mixer is a proud price.
Nothing for a student, that is.
Great video Richard. Thanks for explaining everything. Perfect video for those who say, that DJs aren't doing anything up there. :D
BTW: I'd love if you could do such a quick explainatory clip on how you work with Ableton to create new beats. ;)
Traktor / Ableton video 👍
ua-cam.com/video/XCT4nEG_o4M/v-deo.html
I miss the old crazy plasticman's tracks, Richie!
One of, if not the BEST. You know an artist is great when they have lots of haters
wow that mixer is solid mate perfect for Hawtins layered types of sets ...
Anyone knows the EXACT name of the FX plugins he's using on Ableton? besides the Lexicon of course.
Maybe the included reverb and flanger in Live? I'm trying to identify them. If you get the info, please share it to us. Thanks
this is like a pornhub for dj technology geeks. if techno has its own god, this guy is a pope.
Simply amazing
Thank you Master!
I always thought this is what all DJ´s do and was really depressed when I went to a club the first time.....
After I'm coming up on my second, I don't know whether I'm going for a shite or a haircut.
i bought this mixer a year ago and OMG,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, THANK YOU
Excellent job bro I'm still with you
is he playing ableton and traktor from one computer?
yes
Richie Hawtin, is the only DJ worthy of having songs play through a laptop.
Ouch; that's a bit overstated. He is one of the best though.
What you do is fantastic and can (in my eyes) only be described as live art.
very inspirering and original!
Yep, Richie.. slowly, but you are also going to be Live))
he did countless live shows as plastikman...
dope mixer but i cannot afford :(
That mixer man! 🤤🤤🤤
Amazing setup!
the most important question? wot kind of shoes is he wearing? :)
Rick Owens Geo Baskets!
skechers ez flex 2
Sicky Popp Crube
crocs
they are scuba hoobs from x-mart down in Victoria
How many djs have designed their own mixer? absolute legend, travesty he is not higher up on the dj top 100 list this year
That list is Always wack. I mean martin garrix is on there
That list is as useful as toilet paper in a land of bidets
Richie is Top 10 Techno DJ Hall of Fame 🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝
Bloody fantastic video, very very interesting
So inspiring.
I didn't know Iggy Pop had a son...
Me too
But then I read this comment
Or... that Edward Norton had a brother.
No
half of what DJ's do on stage is to make "Doing very few things" look like "they're doing a lot".
They'll literally just touch knobs in exaggerated fashion then react like their fingers are burned, when they haven't even changed anything at all (sometimes its just to highlight things already on the record, which gives the impression THEY did it rather than it just being part of the song).
they do it to give the impression of constant activity, when half the time you're DJing, you're quite literally just waiting for the next fucking cue point, which is sometimes minutes away. You might as well be having a smoke and just standing there. But they get paid to look like they're WORTH $10,000 an hour. so they have to pretend like the goddamn mixer is some musical Glockenspiel
*that said - i have great respect for what most of these guys do. I dj'd in clubs for over a decade. the guys who get paid the big bucks are great at rocking parties every night and always making it sound fresh. its just that most of the "DJ gestures" and exaggerated knob-twidding is just theatrics, not functionally significant.
well fucking said! I love Richie Hawtin and all, but he quite literally admits his proclivity for finding multiple ways of applying a desired effect or introducing certain elements through unconventional means (like his odd laptop flange routed from cue-b). his hands are always busy but he has a good excuse.. just an insane amount of versatility he has with the amount of devices he uses. I've seen my fair share of DJs that move their hands around 1 solitary mixer just as much as Richie Hawtin. They ain't doin shit all. bunch of charlatans. then again I've seen DJ's like Paco Osuna that could easily be mistaken as lazy, unattentive and disinterested from their lack of über exaggerated movements like the generic big name EDM DJ riffraff nowadays. but if you take a second you realize their concentration is laser-focused, and every manipulation to the music is calculated then applied with surgical precision. Technical AF. I think a lot of 'Festival DJs' suffer from restless arm syndrome or jazzzz fingers. (maybe it's alk the festival cocaine. maybe it's Maybelline)
LA POSTA, al fin alguien que lo dice!!!
You guys should check KiNK @ Moscow Boiler Room. He plays keys, builds drum beats live on the fly, loops, turntable breaks, very hands on in a different way, and.... lots of knob twisting too. Cheers.
Yeah, again, I wasn't trying to suggest "no one does anything real". There are lots of people creating spontaneous music w/ loops and doing incredibly creative live performances using many of the same tools of DJing.
Its just that 90% of DJ's arent that talented, and many do the "abracadbra"-hand-gestures w/ knobs and faders and facial grimaces as tho they're creating music that is just coincidentally playing out of the speakers. Its Kibuki theater. Its a puppet show. Most of them couldn't even beat-match 4/4 house music without a "sync" button. Audiences are so mystified by the technology that they can't tell what's real, and what's a guy pretending to press buttons. In the days when all you had was vinyl and a 2-channel mixer, it was harder to fool people.
Cuanta razon tenes! Como se puede saber si un dj es realmente bueno o no? Quienes son tus djs favoritos?
Nice man.you enjoy.many thanks
Simply A Professional!
Forgive my stupidity, but how does he control the decks, like starting and syncing a track? I do not see a CDJ or turntable and doubt that he uses his laptop to drag a song in Traktor and press play.
tislars he uses undertables. the decks are under the table..
Paul Sweeney Oh thanks, I get it now.. u joker :)
With 2 of his Xone K2
when u find perfect tracks, you dont have to play them together. just like painting sunglasses on the mona lisa. you dont need effects, spining the knobs, nothing. just remove the gap beetwen the 2 tracks (mix the last 1-2 mins), and ur fine. but if you dont have time to find the best tracks,u can spice up the medicore ones with these methods.
Thank you, what you are doing for this universe is awesome! :)
Love & light brother from another mother
