Good stuff giving the EMX some love! Always nice seeing them in setups. It's still a great machine even after all these years.
Mine isn't working properly anymore and it sucks. Alot of jiterry knobs, worn out silicone buttons & bad response on the encoder.
Comon problemas!Try to use isoprophilic alcohol to clean the pots and isolate de main board. Ist work in some case. Also check the ribon band to arp conection. There are some videos on UA-cam.

iConnectivity has many good products for routing USB and midi, i use an Audio4+ to interface OT with LCXL
Hey Hutenberger, I know it's been a few years since you did this video but would just like to say a massive thank you! It has been a huge inspiration for me to get away from the laptop and onto a hardware based performance setup which I am loving!
I (and I am sure many others) would greatly appreciate if you could create a video explaining in more detail how you arrange your tracks within your DAW and get them ready for exporting to the Octatrack for performance. This and maybe some detail on how you do a basic master on your loops/stems (assuming you do it yourself :) )

Hey Sam, thanks for your feedback, really happy to get such a positive response :) I will see if i find time to explain the export process... By the way, meanwhile i play more like an improvisation set. This is way more satisfying than producing a track, cutting it into pieces and trying to get it back together as good as possible. Anyways, having a "fallback" (like a hookline or a good drum groove) is a life-saver ;-)
@@neuzeitrecordings That would be great, thanks :) Yeah I totally get what you mean regarding improvising as opposed to say DJing bounced down versions of your tracks. Way more fun and interesting and great for creating interesting musical journeys i've been finding. I have been building an improvisation set too but I sometimes feel like I am trying to improvise too much and that I need to automate more of my sounds in the 'backing track" and focus on just say one or two sounds for jamming on (per track). And what sounds should be included in the recorded sample/backing track and which sounds improvised...? So many ways to do this haha!

Do you use very subtle compression with the RNC because I've tried doing the same with an Alesis Nano Comp and high comp makes too much reduction by the kick so there's pumping but less compression just doesn't make a better sound, compared to bypass?
Maybe the RNC is a much better compressor than the old 90s Nano Comp?
Actually yes, if the compressor has nothing to do and the track sounds fat although, it's the best you can get i.m.o. ;-) I finally ended up with exporting my stems "compressed" before feeding them into the Octatrack. Therefore, i built an ableton preset with a lot of wild sidechain routings, so that i pretty much get my stems with the ducking of a master compressor, but still as a single stem (The sum of all stems build the "sidechain signal" which affects every single stem separately). So, the sum of all stems played back in the OT sounds quite close to the original track, but as i also play synths on top LIVE, i still need an additional live compressor, and that's what the RNC is for. It kinda' prevents the club PA from accidentally being blown up.

A sort of big "bwoarm" over filter with sustain under filter.... everytime I use Filter enveloppe it sounds weak and really not like this.... :/

i don‘t remember how i made that bass but for sure there is some sample rate reduction and distortion going on and maybe start off with a synth preset that makes a kick drum, but then play a bass sound with it. good luck^^
hey, I would be curious how you handle bpm change with the octatrack ! I find that the time stretch algorithms are terrible for audio loops with kick+bass ...
You're absolutely right. The "click" of the kickdrum gets lost when you change the BPM and have timestretch enabled. I exported the Kickdrum out of ableton in the BPM in which i play live. So i use Ableton's timestretch algorithm which is way better than the Octatrack's internal. Anyways, it's a hassle...
Love the way you're doing this, so clear and engaging. Just curious, 5 years later, have you changed the setup since 2007 (not that I think it's necessary)?
Yes, i changed the whole setup a lot ;-) Currently playing a Laptop/Synth hybrid Jam with my buddy Rafner, but i am also working on a new Eurorack-Modular/Octatrack/Akai-Force setup.

Octatrack is great with external controller, but how do you deal when changing patterns the track volumes won't pick up the fader settings from your controller... I'm struggling long time with this issue... Nice setup btw!
First, I set all my faders to their default value (i chose 100 in the range of 0-127). Then, for integrating a new track in the OT, i set my volumes in the AMP section of each track. This is like Gain and Volume-Fader on a classic mixer. Be also sure that you have a meaningful gain setting of the Sample itself (in the sample settings, where you can also set the bpm and those things).

Hi Milan, it's 120x60x20cm and a custom build by a really weird guy somewhere on the countryside in austria :D it's about 55kg and really hard to handle alone on stage or in trains. Fortunately, i had two "rollerblade" rolls attached at two corners of the case so it is smooth to roll over the floor. if you can go smaller with your livesetup, go smaller ;)

Hi! I Have es question. I have emx1, model d, volca keys and keystep. I use de ouput 3/4 electribe conected to pedal reverb for the snare pricipaly. Its posible to use de ouput headphones Jack and send to sidechain compresor filterin al frecuencies except low. Do you thinnk its Works? Thanks! I love your work
ouff, i am not sure but Headphone out is coupled to the volume of out 1/2 i guess... I don't remember exactly
@@neuzeitrecordings Yes its use 1/2 volume ouput. I thinking to conect this ouput to a bass pass filter and send to sidechain. An the other individual 1/2 and 3/4 an synths to the mixer to compressor send return. Do you thiks its work to keep de kick in front of the mix?
Is the reason for using the RNC because you simply don't want to give up on a track on the Octatrack, or you prefer the sound of the RNC to the internal compressor on the Octatrack? Thanks.

MIDI Route 1 (get more control over Octatrack):
Novation Controller (MIDI over USB) -> Raspberry Pi -> USB MIDI Interface -> Octatrack (only has classic MIDI DIN jack)
MIDI Route 2 (Octatrack to Synth): Octatrack -> Synth1 -> Synth2 -> ...
Audio goes from each synth back into the Octatrack. The Octatrack mixes the synths with its internal signal and gives the master out into the Korg Kaoss Pad (insert FX), from there into the compressor, and from there into the mixer of the venue.

thanks for your input. actually I was looking for more than just a 1:1 conversion 5pin MIDI to/from usb. For that I already use a rather cheap cable, that has more or less the same features as the box you mentioned.
for my usecase I need a MIDI translation and am currently using MIDI-OX and would like to rather use a small device than a laptop. But there seems to be no similar software for the Raspberry.

Ja das ist ein bisschen tricky... mein letztes Pattern hat in den Audio Files einfach sehr lange ein Outro laufen. Dann wechsle ich in die nächste Bank (=Song) und die Files laufen aber weiter derweil. Wenns mir passt starte ich dann die Loops von meinem Intro Pattern des nächsten Tracks stückweise bis ich komplett im nächsten Track bin. Das klappt ziemlich gut, wobei Track 8 eine besondere Spur ist, da läuft immer ein Percussion Loop vom vorigen Track, den ich im Laufe des neuen Tracks dann ausfade und einen Percussion Track vom neuen Track bei Gelegenheit einfade - der dann wieder in den übernächsten Track übergeht. Bei den Percs klingt ein harter Cut sonst irgendwie immer doof.
... und die EMX macht ausschließlich Synth Zeug bei mir. Die Drums können nicht wirklich viel was noch zeitgemäß klingt finde ich... 😅
@@neuzeitrecordings okay. Interessante Technik. So hatte ich mir das auch vorgestellt, eben nur mit mehr verschiedenen Drums. Aber die meisten Zuhörer achten sowieso nicht allzuviel auf Drums, außer diese sind wirklich extravagant und bsp. bassgebend. Bei manchen Interpreten wie z.B. Marek Hemann oder Stephan Bodzin läuft sogar wirklich nur meist ein komplettes Drumkit durch.
Mit dem Synthstorm Deluge kann ich glaube unbegrenzt viele Drumkits gleichzeitig laufen lassen und beliebig viele ein- und ausfaden.
Stimme dir zu, was die EMX angeht. Die Drums sind echt nicht mehr zu gebrauchen, aber die Synths sind echt sehr direkt und kräftig.
Wo machst du denn Musik / in welcher Region bist du heimisch? Finde deine Performance echt super. 👍

Der Deluge ist auch ne Top Kiste, glaube nach wie vor die einzige Alternative zum OT für wirklich große (=lange) Samples.
4:10 Tell me about the Pi acting as a "translator" for MIDI via USB (on the Launchcontrol XL) to MIDI 5 PIN (to Octotrack). Did you hack this together yourself? I can imagine it isn't too hard to get the 5 pin MIDI DIN signals to individual RasPi pins using a 5 PIN DIN MIDI jack. The next step: programming something to "translate" that MIDI signal from the Pi pins to USB... if you write code and know what you're doing, I am sure it's not a big project... but I would not know how to make that work. I could do the physical wiring just not the coding part. So did you write code? Find a project online? Have someone else do it?
I use an old E-MU USB MIDI Interface to get my midi signal out as a DIN MIDI jack, so in this case there was no wiring/soldering needed. I wrote a little shell script that's being executed on startup. It uses the command 'aconnect' (which is a part of ALSA) to list the available MIDI interfaces first, parses their IDs from the response and then links them together, also with 'aconnect'.

Hi! I know it's late but.. I'm trying to use my octatrack with the NLCXL with the Raspberry Pi 3. So, I have a connection, but at start up, all is gone... My question... What start up script are you using?

Create a bash script that has a command in it to connect the two devices. You then add it to the startup so it runs when the Pi starts up.
The command is 'aconnect ' and in my case I would call
aconnect "Launch Control XL" "UM-1" where UM-1 is the MIDI adapter connected from the Pi to the Octatrack.
Then, in the root of the home folder, find .bashrc and at the very end add a command to load your script on startup. My script is called 'connectMIDI' and I call it with a command './connectMIDI'. My script is also an active loop that re-connects the machines if the connection is lost or a new controller is added in.
Very basic steps for loading a bash script at startup, lots of other examples on Google. Hope this helps. o/

... at the time when i made the video i exported all my samples unmastered without any compression. If you're playing in a club, usually before you and after you there's a DJ playing mastered tracks only, and you need to be able to compete with this in terms of loudness. So a compressor is the tool i use for getting there.
