After you finish the wiring are planning on adding any type of sheeting to the interior wall? When I bought my property it came with old shop building I had it spray foamed and sheeted the walls it helps with mounting shelves and cabinets and protects the spray foam.

Spray foaming was the best decision we made with our barns. The only issue I have is the color change. It's aged to a medium gold color over time. If I were you, while the barn is virtually empty I'd spray paint it white for light reflection. Now that mine is 20 yrs old moving heavy tool boxes and cluttered steel work benches to spray paint walls just ain't gonna happen. Even though ours lose a lot of heat around our sliding doors, keeping the temp inside the 40x50 buildings above 50 degrees is not difficult. We salvaged the propane powred 5 ton heaters from our house when the air conditioner side wore out and installed them in the barns. 30 degree high temps are common here in winter, but I rarely have the heaters cycle on when I work in them - as long as I can shut the doors quickly during temps under 40 deg. During winter I normally have to peel off a couple of layers of clothing when I'm working on a project in the barn I use as my workshop. The concrete floor acts as a huge heat sink so your feet stay warm, which keeps the whole body more comfortable. From the salvaged heater's plenum our H-Vac contractor friend ran a big flexible duct hose straight up to the open 16 foot ceiling, angled across toward the center of the space, then down a few feet before attaching to the pipe braces that run horizontal across the width of the barn. We've been surprised that only one duct is sufficient. We were prepared to reconfigure the ductwork to distribute the heat into specific areas. That has been unnecessary. The cost for materials was minimal. Installing heaters in each barn (at different times) was an invaluable last minute brainstorm we hashed out for weeks. It turned out to be an amazing idea, no matter that I was pro and he was con, we both won.
Very nice multifunctional building Evan. You most certainly shouldn't lack for room. Wow 14' from ceiling to floor. You have the potential for an upstairs if you'd so desire to have one. Congratulations man.
We received our shirts today. My wife and I both loved them. She tried hers on and wore it around the house for a while. We are moving into our new house on our homestead in about two weeks.
It is money well spent. You will be in there all year. Sometimes you just need space to do things over the winter. The equipment does so much better under roof. I see why some people like things on wheels. Especially the fluids you use all the time. I am going to at some point put in commercial shelving. This help store some of my 3pt implements inside and over each other. Also to help keep floor space open. I really like the new LED lights. They are a little bright if you lay on the floor and look into them while working on equipment. Most that I have see are 2x4 light and they see to do pretty great job. It a very bright light which is what I like. I had bought four for my small garage. We always had trouble with florescent bulbs in the winter. The new LED s always come on right away. Glad it is all coming along.
It's always great to find good contractors. People who know what they're doing and take pride in doing it. I was not so lucky my first time,but I learned my lesson. I've trusted "my" contractor for the last twenty-five years. They are my first call. Blessings from New Orleans.

That’s actually the furthest thing from the truth these days. The foam these days especially premium closed cell foams are fire rated and is proven to be so by test method ASTM E-84. You can put a torch to it and it smolders and goes out immediately. Please do your research before spewing out false information or something “you read on the internet.”
The spray foam looks great! It is going to be a place where working on equipment, taking care of the pups, or using the kitchen are to process your garden/farm/hunting will all be done in comfort. Doing it now will produce years upon years of enjoyment. Getting the rest of the apron poured and wiring done is lot to yet get accomplished but if I know you two, it’s a task of teamwork and pride! Good insulation will pay for itself over time. The better it is, the more payback you see. Your house is a good example. I used 4 inch metal electrical boxes with mud rings, single and double gang for my switches and outlets in my shop. I also used 3/4 inch pvc conduit to each. This is money well spent in a shop environment with the ease to add or change circuits in the future. Your building is a dream come true.

I see you bought some of that million dollar lumber for those dog doors! We were quoted $3000.00 for our small breezeway project, but I think that's because there is no competition in the area. We went with rigid insulation on the exterior and Rock Wool on the inside. We heat our entire house with two face cords of wood in Wisconsin temperatures - the wood that falls on the roads. Spray foam would be so much easier though 😐
Evan, if closed cell it will be rigid and hard. Open cell is spongy. Also, closed cell is an excellent moisture barrier where as open is not ant water can penetrate. I used closed on my walls and on my ceiling.
The barn is looking really good. As for your electrics work out how many sockets you think you will need and double it. In a workshop you can never have too many sockets and you don't want extension leads all over the floor when your trying to work. Extendable overhead sockets would be a bonus. Its cheap to do all of this now rather than retrofit stuff later on. And to finish it off maybe use a different breaker for each wall. That way you can work on one circuit whilst having power everywhere else. Just a thought. Thanks for posting
The vapor barrier will provide additional R value as well! In a friends shop we make the ceiling out of closed cell urethane board, the trusses were 48 on center so it worked great, also provides easy access if required. We have a 190x75 in the works currently to replace out previous building, going through the zoning and building permit process currently!

I was just told by a spray foam company that I could not do closed-cell over that Vapor Barrier because they can't guarantee it will hold but they will do open cell. Is that good information or bad?

That looks like a really good job that they have done for you and cleaned up as well after themselves! Does that type of foam attract vermin especially mice from living in it. We had a building done with a type foam board and the mice loved it and badly damaged it over time.

I hope you do the rest of the roof in closed cell foam. R factors are lab guesses and don't apply to real world conditions. That 2" of foam will stop 86% of heat transfer, 3" would only increase it to 90% and would not be worth the expense. If all foamed it will be cheaper than the house to heat and cool if the doors are well sealed when closed.

The new place we bought in Missouri the building is 40x65 and it has the silver panels in the ceiling and on the walls. It would be nice to have it spray foamed. Will you close up the ceiling?
doing remodles on spray foam insulation i have seen mold between the foam and steel with rotting purlings. From the steel sweeting from the heat and cold wheather.

I used 2 inch foam board on the walls an ceiling. Taped all the seams and it worked better than expected. Lot cheaper than spray foam was my reason for using foam board at $32 each.
Did you put it against the girts and leave a little air space or right between girts up against metal? What kind of foam board did you go with (foil faced, dow board, etc). Thanks. Did you also put insulation batts in or just foam board?

We have never intended them to live in the house with us. The dogs run free most of the time. We just need to put them in a kennel at night or when we are at work.

There ended up being 3200 square feet covered with spray foam. We plan to later install a metal ceiling and insulate it with blown-in insulation.

I’m hey sprayed the extension cord. lol. I’ve had a similar experience. Insulation guys are general bull in a china closet.

I hoped to cut hay this weekend, but the weather changed to cold and wet. Hopefully in another week, I will finally get it cut and baled.

Mice will not chew closed cell foam. They will however with open cell.

There is foam board between the metal and the purlings. Then spray foam over the foam board. The wood doesn't touch the steel.
