Found meself shouting at the telly for Romain to win. So happy for the kid, he's been so entertaining over the years, giving it his all, only to come up short. But he rode with such intelligence yesterday, pacing his teammate up the last climb, because he knew that they needed eachother, to have any chance of a win
It was a beautiful stage, my friends and I were pushing the duo (Frank and Romain) on the tv, chearing for them to win!!! great to see Bardet finally getting the yellow jersey!!! congrats to him and Frank of course!!!
What exactly was the EF tactic in that stage? Ben Healy is a rider that can realistically win a stage and he has just burnt a load of energy for nothing. Once it became obvious the front two were stronger than expected, why wasn’t he told to sit up and hide in the group? At one point, his own team was chasing him down. Then he was doing pulls to reel in the breakaway for a sprint finish where EF had no sprinter.
Right?! Due in part to the fact that his face lights up with such Joy when he calls people out for their knucklehead-ism! But what I really love is I don't sense any judgment in calling them out, it's all for us to learn.
Visma LAB riding on the front for Wout was perhaps not a wise use of energy, but I think the stage was a great morale boost for the team. Jonas got through unscathed, losing no time to Tadej, and Wout was up there at the pointy end which would have been good for his confidence going forward as well. Even denied Tadej bonus seconds.

Really good question. WvA is also a really good time trialer, but not MvdP. Yet, Mathieu can do long range attacks and time trials for over 50Km in a race. My Observation is that MvdP cannot deal with heat well, since a I cannot recall a great performance above 30°C. Maybe thats an explaination for yesterday. Chris?

Well Chris..Visma needs WVA to win. Period. Because WVA was instrumental in both Jonas's tour wins and got no stage wins last year. So yes they ought to drop their teammates. Didnt Tratnik stop riding to save himself anyways? He lost 20+ min
Is the peloton/VISMA had caught the 2 upfront they would have won the stage EF education wanted to get their Italian rider on the podium in Italy. Also would have worked if the peloton had caught the 2 upfront
I still would not have liked their tactics even if Wout won. To much energy for a team that’s just getting back to healthy again and missing Sepp. Wout is going to win here at the TdF no doubt and if Visma were super then they certainly would have caught two riders with one of them being in the break literally all day long. That said Wout I bet will get better each stage but I’m not so sure Wilco, Jan, Benoot, Jorg, LaPorte, and Bart have energy to waste like Wout does. But it always makes for great viewing 🔥💥🤔🦋👊
I have to feel that Visma LAB weren't blowing their guys up 100%, but were in the front as a show that hey jonas is here and he's ok. With no race days he needed to get out there and play it. I dont think "playing possum" would've tested his legs as much. who knows. lets see their tactics for tomorrow

Hey Chris are these uploaded anywhere in a streamable audio format like a podcast? I would like it if I could listen to these as a podcast while out jogging etc.
Hey Chris, what do you think of Bardet's take on the switch of his mindset; from a prudent GC-oriented to a more spontaneous approach. Because you won La Vuelta near the end of your career, I wondered if you'd struggled with similar thoughts before your glorious win.
How does the time cut-off work? If I do the math, Bardet finished with 307 minutes; 10% is 38 minutes (rounded). Cavendish and group finished at +39:12. Wasn't this just outside the cut-off?
One of the best advertisements for bike racing I’ve ever watched feel bad for FvB that would have been a life changing win and he may never get the chance at yellow again but he has certainly put a good price on his head. Chapeau to Bardet he has put on a great show over many years.
Frank V! Hero of this stage!!! I don't understand Visma's tactics. They're riding like EF education! :( Come on, this is supposedly one of the BEST teams but whoever is calling the shots needs to watch the Butterfly Effect with Chris Horner to learn Bike Racing tactics 101! My understanding is Tadej calls a lot of the shots for the team. If that's true, when he retires he'd make a great DS!
I would pay money to watch a livestream with your race coverage commentary. I hope Peacock reads your comments. You’re better at explaining it than anyone currently on the two broadcasts (is live to keep Jen’s on the Moro though, he’s golden 😂)
Chris, love your channel brother, it's one of the Big 3 I watch religiously. I'm glad you're making some bread through sponsorships but please don't turn into The Move where 48 mins of their 1 hour long podcast is commercials. At least make the podcast an hour and 48 mins long for us lol. You're a real one.
Chapeau for Bardet. What a way to end his career. Last TDF, won a stage and wear the yellow jersey. Now, he can ride to the sunset and start his gravel career after Dauphine next year. VL successfully bluffing all the way to the TDF. All this talk about will Jonas ride or not? Meh. He looks fine. Even if he was not roaring with all gun blazing like last year, he will be still up there.
I imagine VLAB came into this tour with stage hunting and GC ambitions. With 30k to go, I don't think I was alone thinking the break wouldn't make it and so WVA looked like a decent bet for the stage. Why wouldn't VLAB throw some eggs in that basket? ps: delighted the break stayed away. A heart warming stage for sure.
Why wouldn't UAE have drilled it today, to basically put Jonas into possible trouble right out of the gates? I'm just not buying Jonas is fully ready for the Tour, and UAE has enough rocket boosters for Pogi to get him to the end. Basically treat it like a one day classic since next 2 days are not as ridiculous. If they broke him right up front, or maybe even Remco and Primoz as well, it'd be a boring Tour but you'd get a good shot at the overall win this way no?
Visma pulled for WVA - he was the quickest in the bunch and would have won the stage if the breakaway had been caught. Their mistake was not to pull harder.
In 1st stage everyone are very strong even not favorite team riders and if Pog would go all in he coud win but gains would be small compared to wasted energy. The same was at Giros 1st stage. Only Cavendish show signs, that he coud resign from race if he makes another +30mins to his performance.
UAE did exactly what they wanted. There is no way they want to protect yellow from stage 1. They are keeping Tadej fresh and ready to strike in the mountain stages. It was a hot, long day and the team will have other stage wins. TdF is a war of attrition and team work.
No you're not. Complete foolishness. Bettiol isn't a pure sprinter. He'll never beat the true fast men if they're with him. Powless has to a little frustrated burning all those matches.
Maybe. Regardless those decisions are made by someone with the team not racing a bike. The best exposure they had was Healy in the gap and they called him back. Failure either way. Love to see the EF PP deck spelling out priorities, strategy, and tactics. Hopefully they can figure something out. 3 damn good riders not getting good direction today.
@@Aldorains Why don't we just use all that energy to keep our guys in the front group and be in contention? But Quinn loses 30 min's and Powless loses 34 seconds.

Well Chris..Visma needs WVA to win. Period. Because WVA was instrumental in both Jonas's tour wins and got no stage wins last year. So yes they ought to drop their teammates. Didnt Tratnik stop riding to save himself anyways? He lost 20+ min
Is the peloton/VISMA had caught the 2 upfront they would have won the stage
EF education wanted to get their Italian rider on the podium in Italy.
What a great stage! Congratulations Bardet!
Love the new wall/room and the camera angle.
Thanks 🙏 👊🦋
I still miss the fireplace.
Maybe it's because you like heat. But I think the temps today had a big impact on the race today. Especially w Cavendish.
TDF looking like it’s living up the the hype. Thanks for your tactical oversight. You must be a butterfly with Eagle Eyes
I was sad that ef had powless waist energy. He could win a stage, but not by burning matches from day 1. 😢
Thanks for interpreting a pretty surprising stage. I didn’t understand why UAE didn’t push a bit harder until you explained it.
Been waiting for your vid Chris, thank you!
Good (slightly) new studio set up.. 👍👍👍
Marginal gains. On the set. 😂🦋👊
What a first day!!! 🎉
I like that the polkadotjersey was taken by a 78 kg heavy and strong Jonas :)
???
@@kokonanana1 Jonas Abrahamsen starved himself to be a light climber some years ago,it was so bad that he stopped growing, but 4 or 5 years ago he startet eating a lot, grew up 5 cm taller and 20 kg heavier. His watt/kg dropped a bit but his total watt increased. Whats nice is that he proves that going superfast uphills is possible without starving yourself to beeing superlight.
Hey Chris, one of a good follower of you show.. everyday I am listening while in trafic going to work like a radio show back in the days here in UAE. Your set up now is really nice! Keep it up!
Knucklehead count: 1
Visma worked too hard to get Wout a third-place finish at the sprint. Knuckleheadism for sure.
Didn’t I give EF one also. 🤔🦋😂
Happy Tour de France day Chris
Love your new setup!
💯 looking sharp! I knew you'd give dsm the 👍. Their tactics were like on point with your sermons. Van Der Broke looks awesome. Love to hear some thoughts on his potential. Thank you Chris!🙌🦋👊
Thanks. Yesterday was a busy day that went late into the night. Today Garrett and had some final tweaks to finish up but we just made it in time. 🛠️🪚🪛🗜️😜🦋👊
@@ChrisHornerCyclingonly the upper part of your head doesnt appear in my screen half of the video. Or maybe something is wrong with my screen😂
I wonder how many words per minute you were cranking out? You know it was a great stage recap to end the day when you are glad someone who deserves to win fights thru till almost the literal last seconds for victory!
Agreed. That was a nail biter all the way to the finish. 🦋👊🔥
Hi Chris, Thanks for the analysis and your thoughts on the strategies. I see what you did there with the new background. Wondering if the sign HORNER can be placed into corner wall ... HORNER's CORNER
thank you! finally bardet! hey chris did your career overlap with him? any memories that you can share?
Hey Chris are these uploaded anywhere in a streamable audio format like a podcast? I would like it if I could listen to these as a podcast while out jogging etc.
Thank you for your insights.
👊🦋🇫🇷
Hey Chris, what do you think of Bardet's take on the switch of his mindset; from a prudent GC-oriented to a more spontaneous approach. Because you won La Vuelta near the end of your career, I wondered if you'd struggled with similar thoughts before your glorious win.
The new jumbo jerseys are throwing me off it’s so irritating
Every time it takes a bit to get used to during the TdF when the teams change it up. Except the old pink of ONCE. That was money. 🔥🦋👊
New Visma and Bora kits too similar.
Are Jan Tratniks socks within the crazy UCI regulations??
Maybe EF were chasing Bardet because they consider him a podium threat for Carapaz
The only race coverage worth watching? Tejay? No thanks. I’m sure he’s a nice guy though.
Suddenly several riders from different teams has had Corona virus "a few days" before the start of Tour de France.... Pas normal in my humble opinion.
Last but not least. You are always worth the wait, as we see who the first knucklehead is of the 2024 Tour.
👊🦋💤👍
How is everyone in US watching the tour? Peacock or Flo (with VPN)? Or is there a better way??
In 1st stage everyone are very strong even not favorite team riders and if Pog would go all in he coud win but gains would be small compared to wasted energy. The same was at Giros 1st stage. Only Cavendish show signs, that he coud resign from race if he makes another +30mins to his performance.
UAE did exactly what they wanted. There is no way they want to protect yellow from stage 1. They are keeping Tadej fresh and ready to strike in the mountain stages. It was a hot, long day and the team will have other stage wins. TdF is a war of attrition and team work.
EF expends the most energy, gets absolutely no return. What were they thinking? Knuckleheads, or am I missing something?
No you're not. Complete foolishness. Bettiol isn't a pure sprinter. He'll never beat the true fast men if they're with him. Powless has to a little frustrated burning all those matches.
@@AldorainsEF are the “housewives of the peloton” no substance just want tv time
Agree, 1000%@@VinJapanGuitarShop
I’ve just been waiting for you Chris😊
Here we go. Season 5 (?) of watching the steady metronome of 100 new subscribers per TDF stage raise the Chris Horner show to 100k subs and beyond.
Bam. 👊👍🇫🇷🔥
I fear for Cav on stage 2… temps at start 30’C and 36’C at end (86-97’F)🥵🥵🥵
