Im from Sweden. The country of Stiga! This deck is very good. This types of ridning mowers are very popular here. Im working at a stiga dealer as a mechanic. You did a fantastic Job!

I have a Husqvarna R322T here in the states. It's a real goat in terms of going anywhere. You can never get the blades high enough to not scalp the lawn. That's it's only real drawback. Otherwise, I'd pit it against any other 4 wheel drive mower - and win! It's a SHAME Husqvarna never really supported them here.

@@videodistro I agree, for a plain flat yard it's OK but any hills... nope..not working.

That machine is DEFINITELY worth restoring. Ive been a welder/ steel fabricator for the last 45 years and i can tell that this is a really high quality machine by the thickness of the mower deck and all of the welding. Great job!

A little tip we have learned on the underside of decks after we clean and paint we make up a fiberglass resin and coat the whole of the underside another protective but the grass doesn't stick so easy either. Great vid

When getting things powder coated, there is a primer that can be applied, also one can apply more than one coat of powder to give a bit more resistance.
Chip Channel is a restorer ov vintage metal toys, and he always powder primers his toys.

That deck looks like a well designed and good quality unit. Having the pulleys and belts above the deck is a great idea and the moulding dies for that huge plastic cover would have cost millions of dollars. I’m yet to find a better solution to metal parts in a hostile environment than fish oil. I have had bare metal plates on the bottom of my carport posts for 15 years and with just one good coating of fish oil they have never developed any rust. Paint it on the underside of a lawnmower deck and leave it for a few weeks to thoroughly cure and it will never rust from moisture or corrode from the acidic grass. Terrific job on making that deck look like new. Cheers, Stuart 🇦🇺

Great restore and an interesting machine. Don't see many like that in the US. My only nitpick is that the mulch plug rivnut is upside-down. With those you always want the bolt to pull it tighter, load it from the same side as the install tool. Otherwise over time they will un-crimp, stop holding the load, and will be an absolute pain to remove since you won't even be able to grab the "nut" end of it to hold it steady.

Something I've seen commonly done is to replace the bottle jack on a press like that with an air over hydraulic jack (assuming you have a compressor) it saves a lot of pumping on the handle.

Cool! A Stiga! Have had a few of those, unfortunately the metal and paint is of inferior quality so the deck tends to rust out quite fast. I switched to Husqvarna a few years ago and their quality is better. Good video thanks for the effort and time you put into it.

Ya know, looking at the underside of the deck, I couldn't help but wonder if a spray on bedliner would be a good idea? Something like a Rhino Liner spray. If it can hold up to loads of gravel being dumped into it, it can surely handle the little rocks and sticks that a mower can kick up. And it can be applied over powder coating as a protective layer. So you could potentially get the entire thing powder coated, then come back behind with a bedliner spray kit and do the underside of the deck yourself.

I have often wondered if using a pickup bed type coating would work better than paint or powder coat for under the mower deck. Across the pond here we call them rhino lining or line-x coating. Its extremely durable and can withstand tremendous impacts while protecting the metal underneath. Just a thought, the deck looks fantastic, cheers to a great restoration!

I would consider doing an epoxy, like rhino liner, or truck bed liner for the underside of the deck. paint/powder coat just doesn't hold up to abrasion and impact well.
