- Complete restoration of a rare and very rusty brush cutting mower engine. It's a Briggs and Stratton model 14 which produces 5 horsepower. Can I rescue it to a perfect running condition?

Thanks for not playing music....The sound of the restortation is music of it's own.
Exactly! A huge thanks!
I totally agree. Not everything needs music.
Amen
No truer words spoken👍
You're 100% correct The sound of work is soothing to my ears. No need for music. Keep up the good videos and I'll keep watching. 👍🙏
The new old stock parts are fantastic, little gems in this restoration. Well done!
This is a rare one 1400 series aluminum’s horizontals are rare verticals even more these were the first of the aluminum big blocks some had airvain governors some mechanical this is the first mechanical version with the one piece flo jet I had a chance years ago to have one with the two piece flo jet wished like hell I took it don’t find any now even now the 8 hp units are getting scarce

I don't know about everyone else, but for myself, in this current World, where almost everything is entirely BS, I find your videos a very welcome and satisfying distraction from reality. Long may it continue! :)
Seconded.
Thirded !
This video has BS in it. It just stands for Briggs and Stratton.!
Interesting ... Victa was the first Rotary mower sfmkm.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_38.html Wonder what they call one driven by belt or chain. Still seems like a rotary.
I 100% agree!
It's soooo lovely to only hear what's happening, instead of stupid muzak..
pojoel
100% on that!
The videos that have crappy music dubbed over them always get a well deserved thumbs down from me.
shawbros
I don’t know 🤷🏾♂️ why people think tool/mechanical guys want to hear Muzak
for me its like this:
youtuber: *[plays shitty music over a restoration of something]*
me: here. *[slaps dislike]* go f*ck yourself. *[goes off video]*
Is that a porcupine tree fan I smell?
It’s always great seeing an old machine rebuilt and returning to service. I’ll take that anytime over something similar that’s new from China.
Nice video! About 10 years ago my father brought me a Tecumseh LAV35 from our neighbor. I spent a lot of afternoons to restore it after school. I did almost everything you do in the video. Unfortunately the piston-ring replacement was not enought to avoid oil consume of the engine. After 4 years of using it the 45 years old lawn mower has been retired. Now it is a "statue" in my workshop. A lot of memories.
It's been a while, but as usual I am amazed at the articulate work and artistry you do when you are restoring these old relics.. You are really genuine , and I appreciate your videos..
I remember these engines very well, worked on them all the time as a kid.
Thanks! currently restoring a Hayterett mower with the same engine, good to see the strip and rebuild, very helpful. Thanks
Feel like ive been on safari, ive seen a world of parts i never laid eyes on. Great no music, no useless yapping, thanks.
ah, good ol' old stuff, stuff thats actually MEANT to be taken apart.
correct! new engines have WAY too many things that just make them harder to work on. old engines are easier to work on because they are simpler than new ones
wow that's the first time i ever seen a hydrolic puller .. that thing is sweet .. great vid!!
Been ages since I have seen you man, glad I'm back. Am I only one that likes the red assembly lube?
Didn’t even know a hot washer existed before watching, great tool!
Fantastic rebuild, and what a piece of machinery! The engine reminds me of the 5 hp Briggs we had on the back of our AMF riding mower in the late 60’s early 70’s. It ran for years until one day Dad forgot to check the oil, ran it dry and it seized up. I took the engine off and rebuilt it for him, it ran for another dozen or so years before we gave the mower away. You could buy all of those parts at the local mower shop back then!
That is a 5 and 3/4 horse engine some people call it is fixed but it's a 5 and 3/4
A video without music - wonderful.
I'm sure you know already. But I just wanted to add that these engines are air cold and if you run it at low RPMs it's more likely to overheat get too hot. Crank up the RPMs your engine will last a lot longer staying cooler. Like I said I'm sure you know that but my OCD and whatever else I have lol lol tells me to give you a fresh reminder. This is not too offend you anyway whatsoever. I love your videos your amazing you do good work. I just needed to say that for some reason. Keep up the good videos and I'll keep watching.😊👍👍
Mechanical skill, a good memory, and an attention to the details made for an interesting rebuild, good job.
I never thought I'd be so happy watching a video of someone mowing the lawn. I want that lawnmower (or that type). No bog down cutting thick grass. I lost my favorite mower as a kid (one of those scary reel-to-reel 5hp craftsman) when the fuel hose got ripped of at the same time as the spark plug. Wish I could find another... burnt it all up
I nerd out with stiff like this. Very well done video. No narration needed.making the old new again is , fun for the lack of a better word. Thanks for sharing.
What's insane is how much grass you can cut with that mower. I really want that mower.
Growing up around old school hot rod guys, I learned a bunch if stuff so I figured I could pass it along to anyone who wants it. At about 18 minutes in he used that permatex assembly lube, which is good for bearing and seal surfaces, but at 19:30 he coated the cylinder wall with it which is wrong. Engine oil or assembly lube will make it harder for the rings to seat, I was told to use wd-40 or something equivalent. Also always coat both surfaces when putting bearing surfaces together (ex. Coat the pin bore in the piston and wrist pin its self not just one or the other) or it will leave some dry spots on the surface. Greatly enjoy the videos man and I also understand that engine building is a talent and most of us have different talents.
This really does take the restoration process to an artform. Just mesmerising. 👍
Brilliant Job. I worked on small Petter engines when I was a young apprentice, back in the seventies. It`s amazing what these little engines will take and still Run on.
Great job! My OCD wouldn’t let me fit that tremendous rebuilt engine into the machine until it was all cleaned and rebuilt. I’m envious to those that can.
I love these old rebuild videos.
I rebuild an identical engine from my parent's old rototiller in highschool for my auto shop final.
Neat watching in such short time what took me over 6 weeks (only being able to work on it for an hour or so a day)
Beautiful work and thumbs up for B&S for still having parts around.
Finally!! Someone that pre lubricates on assembly 👏 and a matching funnel. 👍
I really enjoyed this video. Just proves that a person needs the right tools for the job. Excellent work!
Excellent job cleaning that block casting!................Smart man, using Assembly lube instead of motor oil as an assembly lubricant!!.............I have seen several cylinders all scratched up from using oil instead of an assembly lubricant.
That thing is so happy now! Just chugging along! Look at it!!!
Great restore!!. Thank you for taking the time to make this awesome video
You do beautiful work. I wish there was a shop class like your videos when I was in high school (1973).
Love seeing these old mowers restored, they were built so much better back then. 👍
Briggs. And. Stratton. Is. One. Of. Oldest Manufacturer. Of. Small. Engines. In. The. World. Well. Made. And. Well Built. Roger I. Have. One. On. My. Lawn. Mower.
Great restoration but it would be nice to see the entire machine restored since it's a very old machine. Thanks
This was fun and educational to watch. Wonderful craftsmanship. Thanks for posting.
Thank you, you have helped me aspire to rebuild an engine, which I am doing right now, an old briggs and stratton rototiller motor.
Big thumbs up for all the content on your channel, my dad has an old mower at the bottom of the garden and I’ve been watching all your stuff so I can have a crack at getting it going again , all the best 😀
An old Briggs and Stratton lives on. Lovely to see. It really is.
Very nice restoration on a truly magnificent yard machine...best wishes and stay healthy.
Great stuff you inspired me to save lawnmower from scrap and restore them thanks I have six in total 4 B&S one tecumseh and a Mountfield all running well restored ,it is a hobby I enjoy very much cheers for the inspiration
Wicked! A Rat Rod lawn Mower! It must be nice to have the specialty tools for the job, it makes life a lot easier. Good Job brother in keeping this old girl alive! 👍👍👍
Love the sound of that Briggs engine
Is it weird that watching you loosen a straight slot screw is really satisfying to watch? Love the vids. Not enough mechanical genius vids to watch nowadays. Thanks for the videos.
Look up Terrell fixes all. He is very good at what he does and he explains everything all the way through. Bear in mind he's a little goofy but funny but very good at what he does. I think he's been doing this for 40 couple years working on small engines. And that's not all he does he works on tractors mini bikes etc. If you can get past his goofiness like I did he is very very entertaining and very informational. It's called Terrell fixes all and look up Terrell fixes all skits. You may enjoy it. 👍👍👍👍 God bless you.😊
31:44 when filling the oil, do you always match the funnel color to the color of the engine? don´t you think you are carrying perfectionism a tad too far? ;)
peter koller always! Well, not really. I have a green funnel, I’ll have bolo for a green engine.
Good video wasn’t it?
Jim
goinghomesomeday1 he was joking, relax
jim s Trey to uh high by
@goinghomesomeday1 Any chance of you going home very soon?
Bayadere He will, as soon as Amazon delivers his pink funnel.
You did a good job on this restoration. Very thorough.
It was very satisfying to see the new rings at 18:04. I was happy to see the packaging has not changed. Brought back great memories.
These videos are calming to watch. Really not bad for a 54 year old engine!
Very good job. Thank you for sharing!
This was much more interesting than I thought it would be.
JustWasted3HoursHere took me back to shop class in middle school.
Fantastic restore mate ! Brilliant content. Poetry in motion . Superb . Well done . 👏🏻👍🏻
I really enjoyed watching you work. Thanks !
I think that blower shroud would look mint if you painted the b and s letters black that would be the cherry on top good work looks brand new
Good job I never had the ring compressor , always used a big hose clamp . Good job on the restoration , anymore those major jobs have turned in a disposable mowers because of the labor cost . I restored a. Old 3 1/2 Briggs push mower one time and put chrome rings in , sold it for it was 25 years old ( it was still running good when I sold it ) and bought a new one . But the old stuff was easy to work on - thanks for the reminiscing session .
Great video, great job! I enjoyed it a lot. Next video; restoring the mower? 😏 Imagine the views, imagine the subs!
I have watched many restoration videos, and you are the only one, that I've seen, that uses a torque wrench to put things back together. Another job well done sir.
Thanks 👍
Great work...and great to see restoration carried out in decent boots and gloves and not a flip flop in sight!
This type of stuff really gets me excited, i love the videos man keep up the good work!
Like the Camembert dish for screws😎😎. Great rebuild👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Beautiful work. Correct tools, knowledge how to use them, great craftsmanship. This engine can now work for another 50 years.
The engine sounds real healthy you did a great job you must’ve been gathering up those parts for years
You done a fine job rebuilding that engine; runs great.
Wow ! This is a true tlc restoration! New rings, new conrod, new sump! When you took the head off it was so clean. Sludge in sump appears to be lead from the leaded fuel days. This engine was already built to handle unleaded fuel with such good valves. Only thing viewers would probably miss is a compression test before and after.
Nice job! Nice to see these classic Briggs engines get new life!
Excellent work! I’m inspired!
I figured you would replace more parts. Good job.
Thanks for posting!
I rebuilt a 1969 3 1/2 hsp last year painted the block Chrysler engine blue with white cowlings and breather. It runs my garden tiller.
It's beautiful great work. Thanks for sharing this with us.
I wish I was this handy. Great video.
I really admire people who are gifted with these special kind of skills.
Next object must be an old Wimbledon 1/4" heavy cylinder lawn mower for your turf garden, Daggerwin! ;D
Uppsalahazze Markstedt you watch daggerwin too! I love his survival role play videos :)
what a craftsman. very fun to watch. thanks for making video
Great job. That had a strong, even idle.
Lovely job. Well done.
Great resto video and nice old engine, im 61 & ive rebuilt many older briggs engines all the way back to when I cut grass for money as a kid in the late 60's - the older engines are my fav. not like todays plastic chinese crap -- im kinda surprised ya didnt do a light hone on the cylinder bore to help seat the new rings. Ive got a 30 year old 3.75hp B&S mower engine thats going on its third deck but the engine is still on its original set of rings and still not smoking or using oil just regular maintenance a new starter rope and one carb rebuild - ive always run a 50/50 mix of factory recommended HD SAE 30wt. conventional oil and 10/40 synthetic with regular changes based on run time.
These videos are so satisfying, keep up the good work mate
Awesome, enjoyed the clip. Thanks for sharing.
I like that piston ring extractor!
I like watching these repair video's. Thanks for the upload!
Nice video👌 superb result. Thxx
Ooo, those spring "Pliers" are so simplistically satisfying, so were the piston ring ones!
You got to do the rest man, lovely work.
I could watch you build all day long!
Nice JOB , Only Thing I Would Have Done Is Paint The Engine Casing To Match The Sump. I Like The Blue Color On The Rest Of It, Really Sets It Off Nicely. Over All Good Video
Awsome job i love watching restorations
It totally amazes me that when people buy a lawn mower they never give it any thought that the oil has to be changed. This engine is a perfect example of what I am talking about.
Great job and thanks for sharing.
amazing job!!! I was hoping to see you do the frame and all the other parts as well.... Anyway, i'm not the one doing the job nor could I do it! I will sit back and keep enjoying as you produce the videos! Once again, AWESOME WORK!
Another great video . I would like to see the field you cleaned up ; and the trees you planted , even if they failed / died . Thank you
Amazing restoration
Another great video! Your workmanship and level of detail is superb with good descriptions along the way. Makes me want to have a go!
Would be nice to see some more videos coming through 👍🏻
Oh and to those who like to pick fault and be negative how about you do a video or two!
WOW, AWESOME RESTORATION
Top work there Dag keep it up your videos are fantastic.
I wish I had an excuse to buy the big hydraulic puller. I don’t need it but I want it. You do lovely work.
*Lots of work. Good for you!*
Loverly rebuild, well worth your effort :-D
No oil being burnt and it sounds very stable.
Remember my dad buying one of these mowers second hand. A thirsty brute. But couldn't afford a new Honda at the time. I'm nearly sure the Honda, when we got one would cut the grass 4 x times on the same fuel as well as putting the clippings into a grass bag. Best wishes from Northern Ireland.
If that engine was alive it would say, "Thank the maker! This oil bath is going to feel so good!"
