    Arguably the defining piece of the 2019/2020 edition of the “I’m not a furry, BUT -” starter pack

    Beastars isn't "Hey, we got animals, they do human things!" It's more like, "These animals have human-like minds but they are still animals and their society has been built around these factors."

      @@nuclearwire9543 Dude/Dudette, chill please. No one was trying to be offensive here. Anyway. Me personally, I think the movies don't need to be compared. The only think that contacts the two movies is anthro animals and the pred and prey dynamic. They are a few others, but I'm not gonna nit pick.

    Wow for being someone who hadn't read the manga, you managed to extrapolate a Lot of major concepts that are discussed more in depth later. Questioning if the character's actions are really instinct or a result of the sociey they were raised in is brought up after it is revealed that "carnivore" and "herbivore" are relatively new terms in universe, having only been brought around after a massive world war, and the concept of interspecies romance is also heavily focused on with questions of what makes one a carnivore or herbivore, especially given the fact the current antagonist is a leopard/gazelle hybrid.

    • @TravenTalks
      @TravenTalks  4 роки тому +6

      I've heard bit and pieces, like about the world war and that Legoshi's grandad is a snapping turtle, but I didn't know about things like the newness of the carnivore/herbivore terms (which I guess also explains why the concept of omnivorousness never seems to be brought up here). It's cool to hear my thematic speculations are actually onto something, lol.

    • @Tenaxis

      @@TravenTalks Btw, it's not a snapping turtle, it is a komodo dragon. Pretty close though!

      @@TravenTalks they usually just lump Omnivores into whichever group they seem to lean more towards physicially. Weaker omnivores end up on the herbivore side, while strong omnivores end up on the carnivore side, since it's generally a matter of potential threat which group they get lumped into.
      Humans, for instance, would actually be on the herbivore side in terms of classification and actually fairly low threat in a world where the animals are JUST as capable of using intellect and tools that a human is WHILE retaining their innate physical advantages of their species.

    Thank you for pointing out how messy it gets tying Beastars to specific metaphors. I haven’t seen people comment on that yet and I personally feel uncomfortable whenever I stop and think, “Wait, if you apply X scene to Y subject, then...”

  • @zixaa

    FINALLY a good video analysis on beastars. I am SO tired of people who try to make direct comparisons to the human world using the carnivore/herbivore situation!!! I've seen carnivores being compared to men, sexual predators, pedos, people of colour, and even introverts?????? I'm glad there's at least one person out there that's able to see how you can't make direct comparisons in details to the real world using beastars haha. thank you!

    On a technical side, this video is awesomely written, presented and edited. The video should probably take up more of the screen, or have something else that could entertain wandering eyes.
    As to your discussion, I'm not sure where you're getting the possibility that the roles of the characters might be more nurture than nature. There was nothing societal that prompted Legoshi to attack Haru, he simply smelled her scent and because the setting was instinctively right (dead of night with the prey being alone and helpless), his willpower broke.
    Throughout the show, Legoshi hates the very concept of devouring another animal, and will actively attack anyone who even discusses being a predator, yet he is just as tempted as the others at the very chance. The characters being able to say "no" to their instincts doesn't mean their instincts aren't there. Gohin's patients are all pretty much proof that predators can't simply ignore their predator instincts as doing so would cause physical and psychological ramifications. If it were mostly nurture, I don't believe it would have such a severe affect on that many animals. I would think Gohin would have way more cases of people who were able to just ignore it, instead of literally all of his patients either finding a healthy way to cope or having massive damage done to them.
    Society's prejudice and role assignment in this show are a response to already existing behaviors. It's trying to adapt to what these creatures are doing in a more civilized environment but hasn't found a perfect way to do so yet and thus many parties overreach.

    I love Beastars, it's such a funny and wacky anime, and to think many call it a rip off of Zootopia but i for one like to think of it more as a parody, in fact one of the major difference between Beastars and Zootopia is that Beastars has a more believable conflict on the discriminatory areas between carnivores and herbivores.

    I love the nature vs nurture debate in a show about animal humans. It shows the inherent bonuses you can get by showcasing humans as animals, since every character has such an obvious appearance and behaviour that so easily read initially - it allows us an opportunity to find the complex in even the most apparently black and white scenarios. I think this is why Aggretsuko and Beastars are 'so human', because you can both greatly exaggerate things people do and say and think, while simultaneously using animalisms to get DEEP and metaphorical - in a somewhat unsuspecting packaging of 'haha wolf man likes egg sandwiches'.
    Plus in general, I think 'nurture' is way more important than nature in how we are shaped as people. But that's because I did sociology.

    IMO Beastars is way deeper than Zootopia, where allegory was so thick you could cut it with a knife. You can't really pull parallels in beastars that easy. I am positive that they were learned not to eat meat since you can't strip anyone from their instinct you can only tone it down and suppress it by yourself or others. This is artificially created society, and it feels like it is going to explore what happens when you strip one group of a part of who they are for the sake of other. I haven't read the manga, but I think somewhere in a future this question may be raised unless manga already ended. If it won't then the entire premise of them being animals is useless, since you still have to understand what instincts are.

    I think the only normal part of Beastars is the fact it's a high school drama.
    ... And then it isn't.
    Would Made in Abyss count for "anthropomorphic media thing"? There's only one human in the main cast. Everyone else was.

    • @TravenTalks
      @TravenTalks  4 роки тому +2

      Yeah, it gets real strange r e a l q u i c k
      And, I don't think so. Seems more like a show that HAS anthropomorphic elements rather than BEING an anthropomorphic show, since most of the cast outside the main trio are just normal people. Though Nanachi herself would definitely count, at least in regards to what I'm referring to here, anyway, lol

I honestly thought I was going to hate it, but after the first episode I couldn't stop clicking the ▶| button and I got up early the next morning and finished it. It is one of the most surreal, intense, and cute shows I've ever seen! I never thought I would use those three words in a sentence.
