Yes, I watched the dub like a normie. I'm not into anime enough to obsess about dub vs sub and since my channel is not anime based, it's better that I review things with English speaking voices. I acknowledge that, in most cases, the sub is the superior version and that this is probably true for this show as well.
It's not only in anime even in other shows translating English to French for example seems akward, the voice is not natural and sometimes cringy, for example I tried watching the poem from the view from halfway down and you don't get the same sensation of fear from Secretariat, subbed just feels natural and that edgy voice in the dubbed version of beastars is gone and it seems more natural and more like teenagers, I'm sorry for the long comment but try out subbed instead of dubbed next time and see if you like it.
And you are a furry.
Heh, Peanut Butter is my favorite character on Beastars
Indie Gaming - i feel like this is true mostly but the option is nice and I don’t believe people should be shamed for being engaged with a version of the show that speaks in their language.
Subtitles often remind me that what i’m watching is fictional so i like to keep them off unless i’m watching a foreign film.
It’s a personal preference
That being said. I just went through the view from halfway down poem in all the different languages and i think it’s hard for me to really determine whether or not the voice acting was poor but i definitely feel like the creators intentions for the scene’s tone wasn’t executed as well as it’s English original
@@Emery6393 I get you, I wasn't trying to shame people that watch dubs, everyone's entitled to their opinion, if you prefer dubbed then it's okay, I just wrote my comment because I felt that shady doorags hasn't experienced subbed before and to try it out.
Indie Gaming - I prefer sub in most anime in terms of voice performance . Unless it’s death note then dubbbed. But yeah I know what you’re saying
Mangaka said Haru’s eyes were to make her look like a “doll” - cutesy, basically. The idea of looking like someone to protect (which - well, we know how more developed she is).
Juno only wants Legosi because she wants to show society the perfect carnivore couple. Sure, I think she thinks Legosi is handsome but I think her obsession with him is more related to her ambition of becoming a carnivore Beaststar and being a representative for carnivores. Having a strong and imposing wolf at her side who is also kind and considerate is the perfect boyfriend in Juno's ambitious mind. Not to say she is cold or anything ( I think there was affection there) I just think she confused her ambition with love.
But Legoshi stood up for her when no one else did. Also same Species
That's a good analysis of it. You gotta remember that these characters are teenagers and don't really know much about relationships yet. It's going to take time and life experience for them to mature enough to find actual long-term partners.
Because of her odd appearance-her brown curly hair - and shy deminor, she thinks legoshi would be perfect for her aswell as for the status he can bring being a grey wolf
Juno said that herself. Legoshi was the best available candidate she could have to appease certain social expectation.
She does like him, especially further in the series, but it was more of a calculated advances rather than genuine interest.
Nah she’s an outright Bitch with an agenda
According to Shady:
Legoshi: most relatable
Haru: Most interesting
Louis: Favorite
Juno: Mixed feelings?
I really dislike Juno. When you first meet her it isn't so bad but she's just well dishonest and aggressive in private.
ADerpyReality hard disagree mate. You should read the manga.
@@ADerpyReality *inner manga reader intensifies* do not underestimate the author Paru.
Gouhin?
Yeah yeah they’re all cool but…… Jack is best
19:40 "It sounds like Juno is trying too hard to sound pure and innocent."
That's why I actually like her voice! It's a subtle way to tell the audience that she's not all that she seems.
It conveys that very well but it's so odd how shady found it to be a voice acting error, my friend is totally oblivious to how fake she sounds, you said it was subtle but effective, and I think it's effective but WAY too obvious at the same time. I swear it's the voice acting equivalent of a Rorschach's test, or more like that one dress everyone was convinced was colored a certain way but everyone was in separate camps as to what its colors were. It's honestly fascinating
Seriously, the mayor with his human teeth is more terrifying than any horror anime
True Beastars has it's ups and downs like all animes and tv shows do, but that's what makes it interesting, and sure some people say that Beastars is a rip off of Zootopia, but i for one like to think of it more as a parody in fact one of the major differences between Zootopia and Beastars is that Beastars has a more believable conflict of the discriminatory areas between carnivores and herbivores, where as Zootopia is about anthro animals basically cosplaying as humans.
Well beastars technically came first but was a well know, had started as Beast Complex back in 2013 as a dijon Paru made it college with mostly same characters but aged up, beastars was developed after that, and another version of Beast complex that came out in 2016 which was mini stories inside what would be the world of beastars
well in zootopia they don't have instincts anymore and only mammals are anthropomorphized (fish, bugs, etc are still the same) so not only in zootopia are instincts not a thing but also in zootopia predators can still eat meat.
@@cfruge444 agreed, both do an amazing job portraying what they're trying to get across and to simply compare both as being the same is a disservice to both

its not unmanly to love romance man, you gotta embrace it. That's what I learned. Amazing romances GOATED.
YOU SPEAK THE TRUTH
The manliest thing someone can do is to do what you want so watching romance anime despite people saying its unmanly is pretty manly
it is pretty unmanly, but no one is perfect, you gotta do what you gotta do
Naw. Romance is beautiful, embracing it's great. Limiting yourself from media because of dumb gender stereotypes is lame, you're missing out a lot of fun stories, and hey, they're also really fun to watch with your lover, I know that from personal experience. Romance is GOATED when it's done well.
@@ilovenierreplicant2983 Romance is like horror, there’s only so many ways to put it on screen and once you’ve seen all the tricks and tropes, it loses meaning, like knowing and fully recognizing the monster in a horror film. Besides, most of these romance movies confuse romance with lust and omnipotence
Shady disliked the opening.... Shady is my new mortal enemy.
I only watched it cause the intro was so compelling
@@thezerowulf507 same 😂
The only other anime with as compelling an opening for me was Death Parade. They have such a massive contrast to the compelling story they're telling, but those intros really drew me in.
@@MrMestapholese death parades OP is a full 180 from the show and its jarring, that being said I will straight up fight anyone who doesn't think "flyers" absolutely slaps. Pretty sure I only watched the whole thing to hear that song more.
“I hate that Intro”
Sin
Absolutely
100% sin
Even satan gasps at the sin committed-
Burn the Heretic
Usually the eyes on haru is suppose to give a "childish" Nature to our little rabbit, even if she sleeps around alot. what i mean is that she appears to be innocent and its even relfected in her own desire to be independent but not bullied. (evidence in the scene where she writes her will before she mouths off to the lion kingpin)
@Harmony Haynes No?...what?
As an introvert myself I wholly relate to Legoshi and appreciate your rant on how socializing actually works lol
Also there’s a kid from my class-let’s call him Charles. Whose a six foot black man, naturally he’s very good at football without trying much. He could practically take on our entire class in a fight and win, even teachers are scared of him.
When he talked about this anime, it wasn’t just his introversion he related to when it came to Legoshi. But just how much Charles and Legoshi have to be aware of the fact they terrify people.
I’ve known this man for three years and I’ve never once heard him raise his voice, or get angry much. His physical aura is threatening but spend five minutes with him and you get he wouldn’t be turned to violence or anger by words alone. In fact the one time Charles had to defend himself-he cried for hours after seeing how badly he beat the robber who was trying to steal from his family.
Hearing his relations to Beastars main character was enlightening to me. How he pointed out I’m a scrawny woman who could instantly be overpowered by him. He’s surprised I was so willing to be close with him.
He’s a four hundred pound black man with a foot of height on me, and his is hobby is smoking drugs and playing violent video games. He expected for me to run away. Which is sad to hear how deeply aware Charles’s is of societal perceptions and the real danger he could be in if he walks around like he’s anybody else. It was educational, made me appreciate the story more.
Omg wow
This Charles deserves hugs and yummy cookies with milk.
Interesting
How’s he doing now? Dude sounds like a stand up guy.
If people think that smoking a bowl of weed is awful, or that playing violent games is evil, then they must be on opioids.
The start of this lowkey sounded racist, but as a black girl, thank you for not beating around the bush. Lmaoo
You know, I could never quite put my finger on why I felt so much empathy or relatability to Legoshi until you pointed out the "introvert" comparison. I remember in high school being absolutely terrified of trying to approach anyone I liked through fear I would come across as awkward, creepy or weird so I didn't like expressing too much of myself around others unless they were already long time friends. Dating was a huge hurdle for me because there were always certain expectations of guys and how they should act or how girls expected them to act, so I was hyper aware of my own body language and behaviour constantly fretting about how I came across to others, always worried people thought the worst possible intention or interpretation of my behaviour.
Most of it was just me being paranoid but it did make me hold back a lot when it came to new friendships or potential dates even if looking back now it was pretty obvious I was overreacting or that I threw away a chance with someone because I got too nervous and backed away before anyone got a chance. I still notice now as an adult that some people I date are surprised by how much I don't act like a "typical guy" and it makes me wonder what the hell previous people did to them to make them hage such expectations and that I likely would have just been told the same thing if I had the confidence to date more in high school instead of worrying about people reading me wrong. I suppose Legoshi being feared as a carnivore only for people who get to know him to realise he's not what they expect can be applicable to anxiety's about social pressures and expectations in general (if you're tall you can be intimidating etc)
"He isn't sure if he's actually in love with her, or if it's just a side effect of him wanting to eat her"
Ah yes, normal teenage angst
"Who's Bambi?" I literally lost it 🤣🤣🤣
"do i looklike saberspark"
i mean, is it a coincedence you're reviewing this show around the same time as him?
Not gonna lie, it does benefit my channel that his video is supposedly coming out soon, but I wasn't trying to force it. This video was due three weeks ago, but it took forever to make.
"I hate the intro"
YOU WHAT?!
Louis being the protagonist of another anime we're not watching is a perfect description of him.

this show is basically when you take zootopia and make it more mature.. oh and better! this show is so great!
Yeah I agree
I'm curious about Haru's "behaviour" that you feel needs to be excused. If you're talking about her promiscuity, I don't feel she was sleeping around while in a relationship. The implication I got was that Haru attracts a guy's attention, they dump her when she proves to not match their first impression of her, then the cycle repeats. It doesn't seem Haru is ever the one to initiate the relationship and it never the one to end it. She seems alot more passive because that is what is expected of her. So I don't consider her promiscuity to be a bad thing. She's just allowing guys to come onto her, she attempts to bond with them, then they dump her, rinse and repeat.
It's not like she sleeps around with multiple guys simultaneously (like an ACTUAL slut who cheats on her boyfriend), the relationships always seem to be monogamous, but short-lived because they don't like the real Haru because she's not just some spineless, submissive waif. Like she appears at first glance. Like you I empathise with Haru because of her sad lot in life, but I don't feel she's a bad person or that her promiscuity is something that needs excusing to be acceptable. She's not actually a slut because it's never implied she cheats on her boyfriends, just that she has a high boyfriend turnover because they're mostly superficial jerks.
Greatsaiyakirby Thank you for pointing out Haru‘s cycle with most of her partners, but I would like to remind you that she is in a (complicated) relationship with Louis while this cycle happens. Non-monogamy is not bad either so this may not be an issue, but only if Louis knows about and is fine with her openness to other relationships. Another thing to keep in mind is that while she is not cheating, at least one lover she had was cheating on his girlfriend with her and was okay with ruining that relationship. Haru is quite complex and I don’t think her situation is as simple as you feel it is. Another aspect is the difference in expectations about sexuality in eastern culture from what we understand from a western perspective. I enjoyed your take regardless. I hope you stay safe and have a nice day.
@@juliadonati8245 Well you make good points to be sure, though I am not sure I would call Haru's relationship with Louis a proper one. Since he largely uses her for sex and privacy, but rebuffs all of Haru's attempts at a loving, deep relationship. So I wouldn't hold it against her that she sleeps around, when Louis won't give Haru what she needs, and insists she not tell anyone about them.
If she knew about Mizuchi and her boyfriend before sleeping with him, I'd have no problem calling her out for that, but nothing I saw implies she knew beforehand. First we see is Mizuchi spreading rumours about Haru, THEN she confronts and assaults her. Then brags to spread more rumours. Then comes back later to assault and harass Haru because her boyfriend broke up with her.
It could easily be Mizuchi's boyfriend bragged about it (we see him do that later) and word got to Mizuchi that way. Haru's dismissiveness could be because Mizuchi went out of her way to alienate and oastracise Haru from her peers with the rumours BEFORE confronting her. Had Mizuchi gone straight to Haru and not spread the malicious rumours, kept it between them, Haru may have respected her feelings more.
But anyways we'll never know the full story since we don't see Haru in the act, so it's left ambiguous how much she knew at the time. Nice talking to you and debating stuff like this. Hope you stay safe too. :)
Its been a while since I have seen this show but...could you really call them boyfriends?
@@nidhoggsvrede Depends what your definition of boyfriend is.
We don't know how long any of Haru's previous relationships lasted. All we know none of them lasted long.
If they were one-night stands I'd say "no", but if they went longer like with Louis, I'd say "yes"

Gohin to me, as a sex offender treatment therapist, felt like a sex offender treatment therapist. The way he talks, his focus on risk management, it's all the same, minus the cool bamboo crossbow.
Who says you can't have a cool bamboo crossbow?
@@domp2729 now that you mention it... I probably could have one for my home lol
not to mention he a panda. most people overlook how pandas can be herbivore or carnivore. they can live out entire lives on plant or eat meat as well. so he probably understands both sides cuz he can be both sides of it.
This will be a 100% spoiler for season 2; I've watched it in only Japanese and I am 50% sure there's a translation differences in the English release and further ado:
In season 2 episode 2 there's a scene where Legoshi was doing laundry during the night, alone and soon a giant, I believe, cobra comes in looking like a Jojo antagonist speaking to Legoshi and during their conversation, and I'm going by the direct Japanese dialogue, word by word, of the scene, called him a straight up “ Lol¡con pеrvert wolf ”; they're making it abundantly clear what they're talking about in this anime, they wanna make it explicitly clear of what subject matter exactly they want to be understood by the average Joe.
I knew from the very start, it gave me so many chills down my spine just watching those scenes; I'm more like a half introvert half extrovert with a heavy lean on introversion so that's not the part I can fully relate with.
So in short you're exactly right. I've never offended against anyone in my case however.
@@sandywolfr26 You know... that actually makes so much sense. It also explains why Gohin has such a good grasp on the mentality of a carnivore: his species can play either side of the coin. He’s used his unique genetic position to try and help others, i.e. how he mentors Legoshi. Man, just when I thought this dude couldn’t be any more badass...
I like your take on the "sex scene" prevalence in anthropomorphic "furry" shows. I'm not necessarily a furry myself but I, much like your channel, am drawn to these types of shows. And I appreciate that like Bojack Horsman they dont have fan service nudity and sex just for the sake of fan service. While nice to look at it takes away the deep thinking and diverse plot lines that involve deeper thinking. Different parts of the brain I guess.
Anyway I love your content man, I dont think Iv clicked on a video faster than this one.
I pretty much had the same overall reaction when I first watched it. However, I watched a lot of videos going into the rest of the story and the Manga. The kidnapping may have seemed out of place, but it's setting up some stuff that adds to the world and makes it a lot more interesting... plus as it progresses there's less high school drama which is nice
Sadly some things get lost whenever you listen to a dub instead of a sub
For example, the honorific that characters use for each other and how they correlate to how they view the person they are talking to
But if subs are jarring for you, I guess the dub isn't that bad in this case
I watched the sub first and I still didn't pick up on this because I just generally don't understand japanese.
I think for people like me, dub is just better.
I'd say in terms of dubs, Beastars has one of the best out there
@@mittoman1542 From what I've seen of the sub in other reviews, the dub seems pretty much 1:1 in execution.
This will be a spoiler of season 2 episode 2.
Exactly, of season 2 I hadn't watched the English and haven't read the English captions; all japanese throughout, captions and all.
Of S2E2 a massive Cobra comes in looking exactly like a Jojo antagonist in the laundry room during the night as Legoshi was working on laundry speaking to him, the Cobra said word by word ロリコン変態オオカミ “ lol¡con pеrvert wolf ” towards Legoshi so it's not just a fan interpretation, it's canonical fact 100% what I was sure of since the very first episode of season 1.
i laughed so damn hard as the "its the eyes". Those eyes bugged me the entire watch through

Between you and Saberspark, I had to give this show a shot, and I have to say... I love it!
“Haru gets kidnapped sub plot” now be careful there, you’re about to piss off manga readers. Seriously though, jokes aside there are many of the things that you spoke about that will be explained later on in the story, as well as questions you had that may also be answered at certain points later on.
throwback to when I watched this thinking it was going to be a more serious zootopia but turns out it turned into a love story and I still watched it in one night either way
That Juno and Luis (Rui?) scene was so good. I was like, damn. Is she gonna eat him, but make it sexy??
Nope. Just intimidate him fiercely.
I think she was the only female carnivore they showed getting aggressive.
I really love the animation for this show! It's quite gorgeous and unique.
Shady, if you're going to cater content furries, might as well do it with shows that are deep and are of great taste. Also, love the video and the series.
Blacksad?
I don't think her crush is just a stereotype. I interpreted her crush as being a relationship she chose to pursue because a wolf couple would look good to everyone. Legoshi was her easiest shot on dating a male wolf and being the "desirable" member of society she needed to be in order to become a Beastar.
He benefitted her image.
Love the humor in this video. Your mention of Louie's hypocrisy made me think of a person's shadow aspects. Often what we criticize in others is what we actually find fault with ourselves. With that in mind I wonder if Louie expressing how he doesn't want Legoshi to hide who he is to Louie is also because of the frustration Louie feels when he hides himself. One of the moments Louie got to see another side to Legoshi was when Legoshi found out about Haru's kidnapping and going to Louie to help her. Legoshi expecting Louie to help find her and Louie shamefully turning away.
Beastars in a nutshell:
"I'm Haru and this is my boyfriend, Legosi. And this is *his* boyfriend, Louis."
I've been putting this show on hold for a while now. I guess Shady's what I needed to finally be pushed into it. brb

Nice I love to hear it
I've been reading the manga since early last year and holy shit it's amazing, the arc after the anime is especially amazing.
Then there’s the fourth arc, which is hot garbage
7:44 - I would believe she has those eyes because 1, of the current animators/modelers style, and 2, because she is an Albino rabbit. But I could be wrong :)
Just love this series. The characters are awesome and the story of the series is gold. Can't wait to see season 2 because the characters will develop more and we will see more of their relationships, motive, actions develop also.
The grandeur of the Haru getting kidnapped by the Shishigumi subplot is grossly overstated. This is a single criminal group that targets Haru specifically because their leader has a fetish. This is a common enough occurrence that it is comparable to the murder mystery plot, only this is a murder in progress, and one that would be swept under the rug by the mayor instead of being followed up on. And it reinforces a simple truth; Gohin and Legosi are not invincible. They are stronger on average than most other characters, but they can be hurt and they can be worn down, so if they get into a fight with a bunch of thugs, there is a distinct possibility that they can still lose and that such failure can bring on consequences for them and those around them.
I don't know if the dub explained it but in the sub/manga the explanation for why the mayor looks like that is because he got cosmetic surgery to look less intimidating. Ironically it just makes him look weirder and more unsettling.
It explains it In the dub. The mayor himself says that he did it to be less intimidating.
That saberspark comment though 😂
Oh Shady, if you like Louis, man wait till Season 2, or read the manga, Season 2 is Louis' arc, I mean it may be called "The Detective Arc" but Louis really shined in Series 2 of the manga , so I cant wait to see what it will look like in Anime. And honestly, that Juno/Louis scene where she straddles him on the floor is pure heat, watch the tail wag, it betrays her real thoughts vs what she's saying to Louis. And yes, the behavior of tails is noted in the manga, so it's not just a random thing in this show. Also, No Bill didn't eat Tem.
The English voice actor for Gary sounds so familiar...
19:50 ... I KNEW IT ....
Haru**.. stupid autocorrect
haru's eyes are like that because she is a twist on the moe movement and using those eyes made the twist more suprising, the mayor is meant to be disturbing because he represents the willingness from the predators in the story to become what the herbivores want them to be, also, "louis is the protagonist of an anime we just missed" boy you ain't seen nothin' yet
That first bit was exactly how I felt liking this show. It felt almost like a Ronin or western film

Starry Geek yes that show is so good!
The criminal group Shishigumi will be relevant to the story throughout the series. It's still relevant in the Manga.
Beastars is my favorite anime, and I just finished season 2. Hopefully we get season 3 soon.
I think Juno works in her dynamic with the rest of the cast because she's rehearsed for the spotlight as a pitch perfect Cinderella, but the production onstage for this story is no fairy tale.
While we in western/European cultures derive emotion more from the mouth and how it’s drawn or shaped Asian countries such as Japan find more emotion in the eyes which is why anime has such large eyes to display emotion more clearly. different characters have different eye styles depending on what their personality is sometimes. Her eyes show a softness and somewhat helplessness as she is a bunny.
If this show is about facing and conquering your Primal instinct, here is something to think about. Does Juno really ha e a crush o Legoski or is that her instincts kicking in because he is a gray wolf like her?
The show also points out on how taboo mix species couples are as well from what I noticed.
Liking someone because of what they are, even if it's in your instincts, does not dismiss the emotion. Juno has a crush on Legoshi because A) he's a grey wolf, B) she heard good things about him before meeting him and C) he was nice to her upon their first meeting.
I wouldn't say the show is about conquering your instincts, but more of acknowledging and understanding them. Legoshi doesn't conquer his primal instincts, he just learns to use them to his advantage.
I'm pretty sure the killer is going to be the white tiger. They hid his face in the large group shots whenever he shows up. It just shows a presence of a character without involving him in the story.
Bruh what? The intro is damn near perfect
How could you not like the op, I guess everyone entitled to their own opinion but...
You're wrong.
Everyone is allowed an opinion, his is wrong, but he's allowed to have it lol
One thing this show did that I didn't expect to be nearly as good is the damn music, it's some of the most incredible music I've heard from any show period. To say this show surpassed my expectations is an understatement, and I did the same thing! I too stayed up way too late binge watching the entire thing, then discovered the second season was out and saved it for the next day, and yet again the music blew me away, the track, "Between the soil and the Skyline", my favorite from season two, was so completely unexpected I don't even have the words, it absolutely slaps.
I like your videos my man so keep doing the good work and the show is like Zootopia except it's for adults which I like and Louis is also my favorite character too
Never described myself as a social introvert, think I will now. Thank you man, great videos keep them up
Hmm... This is my first exposure to the dub voices, and I think every voice is spot-on including Juno. Her Japanese VA is really flowery too, it's meant to be a bit saccharine.
That intro is iconic. Your opinion is not accepted around these parts.
I'm so happy you watched Beaststars! What do you think about Shera (I know it's not your taste but the writing is great and you like the Ladybug series) and did you hear that TUCA AND BERTIE IS GETTING S2 ON ADULT SWIM YEAAAH
4:53 Bruh truth. I love being and hate being a social introvert.
bill nor legosi did it, their teeth don't match and in the last episode we saw the killer's POV, he was much taller than legosi
I totally agree but with the kidnapping thing at the end, gotta remember it’s adapting a manga. Anything that may have seemed to have popped out of the blue is gonna come back in the next seasons, it’s just that adaptions are paced weird.
As first my female friend didn't like how Haru was portrayed in the first two episodes, due to her...friskiness. I gave her my viewpoint of how strong of a character that she is (having finished the show prior) and a brief rundown of WHY she is...frisky and she went on to watch the rest of the show and enjoyed it greatly. I think explaining to her how I felt a lot like the protagonist growing up also helped. Only sex, not carnivorism. It was a nice metaphor, really.
Dear goodness, the sudden Beauty and the Beast edit got me _ROLLING._
His first impression and after watching is the same as mine!

I'm sorry I died at Adrien levels of obliviousness that was to accurate

The teaser with the discarded pills makes me sad (I read the manga ik who killed Tem :P)
That opening sketch was fantastic! lol
id say louis is alot more hypocritical for letting haru die because of his trauma, erasing his name from the black market records won't change his past and he had skills, resources and connections to find her and a gun to save her but chose not to, if he can't handle a kidnapped bunny, it will be worse when he becomes beastar
i feel bad for juno because she deserves to be loved but she had rose colored glasses about legosi, just because they are wolves, they fight against injustices and they are involved into things she thinks he is perfect for her and didn't asked or cared much what legosi wants
i appreciate the melody and visuals of the intro
That intro was amazing
