Hi Bob...beautiful pen... I guess when cutting the wood it's a good idea to keep in mind the length of the blank... such a good finish with the skew chisel... great job... take care...All the best.....Andy

Great job as usual, Bob! Using the bushing for pressing to protect the blank is a great idea! 👍Why didn’t I think of that?🤔

Hey Bob! Lovely video as always. Instead of a CA finish, why don't you try Yorkshire Grit followed by a Hampshire Sheen High Gloss polish? Not sure if you can get it easily over there, but it's #1 over here in the UK for shining up wood finishes.

      Thank you Sam,
We can get it over here. How is the durability impaired to C/A?
      Regards,
      Bob

      @@RJBWoodTurner Hi Bob,
The Yorkshire Grit essentially sands it down to 1000 grit, and I think 2000+ if you go and use the microfine too. It's probably good enough to just use this (skip the MicroMesh) and then C/A, as there's no risk of that MicroMesh staining you get at the higher grits.
The Hampshire Sheen High Gloss is extremely hardwearing (I tend to put 5 coats or more on my pens) and fingerprint resistant. Probably as durable as the C/A in the very long run (Hampshire Sheen High Gloss is made up from caranuba waxes) and definitely gives a much more natural look and shine over C/A, really brings out the best in the wood especially the Yorkshire Grit.
Lots of demonstration videos here on UA-cam for both materials. Thank you for taking the time to reply, love the videos and learnt everything about pen making from you.
      ~ Sam

Hi Bob, Another great looking pen. I've seen cutting boards with this design and thought that would make a great pen blank, but you've beaten me to it. Take care Bob. Cheers, Huw

Looks phenomenal!! Although to keep symmetry. what not put the thick pieces in the middle and thin out towards the edges?
Also, 100% agree on Purple Heart and Yellow Heart!!! Great job!

Another amazing video and pen Bob. I'm setting up my woodwork in a retail store this weekend. I'm going to try this style blank. I've done it with cutting boards just not pens yet. I might try Maple and Purpleheart. Those contrasts are beautiful. Hopefully I can do your pen justice.

Great pen! Maybe you can try making a blank like that for a modified slimline pen. You can try to transition from wider to small to wider again.

      That is a good idea.
I was also thinking the Sierra click is a longer tube and may work nicely.

What an idiot I am. Using the pushing to protect the other side? What a great tip you just gave me. Why are we like the way we are. We think of all the complicated thing and never of the simple things that will.make a difference. Thank you for the video. Sierra pens are beautiful pens and so easy to make. You were my inspiration three months ago to start making pen and today I am not sorry I started. Thank you.

Great job with the skew, real nice pen blank. Have you tried making ridges on the blanks after rounding way before turning down to bushings, then use the skew as the scraper laying it flat on the rest to flatten them. It will look like you almost polished it when you get it down pat? My shaking hands at this age makes this almost always needed. LOL Not that you need any info on the skew, you are great now with it , that pen speaks of that.

Hi Bob, turned out very nice indeed. Had me scared seeing your fingers so close to the blade.

      Hello Phillip,
The camera angle was deceiving, my hands were not near the blade. Trust me, I was aware of it the whole time.

You can really tell the difference in the beginning with the video footage between the old and new cameras. I liked the pen. If it was me I probably would have flipped it around and had the darker wood towards the bottom, but came out great either way

Love your videos. But geez your carelessness of cutting the blanks on table saw scares the crap out of me.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  4 роки тому +1

The blanks were cut on a sled, held by a clamp, my hands were on the handle and the fence of the sled. At no time were they close to the spinning blade. The camera angle may be deceiving but never doubt my fear of those spinning carbide tips.
      Regards,
      Bob

It just looked like your hands came way too close to the spinning blade right after you first trimmed it.

Bob, that pen blank looks awesome. I got to be honest, I was cringing a little when the table saw blade was spinning and you were adjusting the hold down clamp. It looked to me that your hand got pretty close to that spinning blade. Take care, sir.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  4 роки тому

It was a camera angle, I was at least 8” away from the blade.

    Hi! Bob,
Nice blanks and really nice looking pen!,
Have you think making a blanks from 2 blanks one inverted from the other ( like the way you placed the blanks in the first minutes of your video) then glued them together and cut the outside half of eatch blanks to make a kind of inverted pattern. The cuts off could be glued together or laminated with a thin strip of colored wood and that's give you new patern.
That's what I am doing those weekends, playing with paterns and laminates cut inverted and glued again color and grain, that's fun and sometimes made nice blank's you don't think of.
    Have fun!
    That's what's important!!
    😎👍👍👍
    Take care!
    Stéphane B.
