One of my favorites that you’ve done
My wife snagged that pen before I ever got to show it off. I want to make more because the design is so cool. I think rotating more than one section at a time would make some cool blanks too.
RJBWoodTurner my wife has stolen a couple from me too!
LOL, I’ve lost several to my wife as well.
That is an awesome pen I really enjoyed watching you do that keep up the good work thanks for all the things you show us.

Thank you.
Regards,

First thought I had while watching this was that the shavings from SpectraPly would probably look really cool mixed in resin.
Very cool pen btw.
Thank you.
Regards,
Bob
Beautiful blank Bob,Awesome finished pen! Have a Happy New Year to you and your family! ....Save those shavings for casting a blank I am sure it would come out nice!
Thank you Kwstas,
Happy New Year.
Regards,
Bob
Great job there, Bob. Don Ward would be proud. A suggestion: After I cut my segments on these pens, I sand them with 120 to make sure they are completely flat so that the fit between the segments on the tube is perfect. When you were applying the DNA, I thought I cold see brass tube between some of the segments. That said, it looked perfect once assembled.
Thank you John,
That had to be a reflection from the shop light. The segments were very tight.
Regards,
Bob
Hi Rob, That a great looking pencil,I have had a similar blank for a while, and I have been wondering how to jas it up,and now I know what I can do with it.i will definitely be giving it a go.All the best for the new year. From Roger from over the pond.
Thank you Roger.
Regards,
Bob
Love it. Wish you could have saved the shavings cause they would have been a cool pen if the shavings we're suspended in resin and paint out the tubes in a matching dominant color.
Thank you Marcy
I have several more of this blank in the same colors. I didn’t clean the lathe table off before turning so these shavings were contaminated.
Regards,
Bob
Gorgeous! You said this is a modified mechanical pencil kit - do you happen to have any information on the kit and how it was modified??
The kit is a standard Funline pencil kit from Pan State. I call it Modified because I use a single 4 1/4” tube instead of the two tubes that come with the kit connected by the press in center band.
Regards,
Bob
that is cool! I love spectraply. never thought of that. I will have to try it. Do you think it would work if you use a segmented pen kit?
I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. It would be worth a try.
Regards,
Bob
Bob fantastic looking pencil, where would I get some from in the UK ??
Hello Douglass, I wish I could be more help but I do not know about material availability in the UK.
Regards,
Bob
Great video as always Bob. Very nice looking pen. Now I know what to do with all my Spectra Ply. One question for you. Did you sand the segments after cutting on the bandsaw? Thought maybe you did off camera because the fit seemed really tight for a bandsaw cut.
Hello Joe,
I probably should have but I did not sand my segments. I got lucky with this one and everything fit together well.
Regards,
Bob
Hey Bob, I hope you are looking forward to the new year and having a blast.
Random question, have you ever been really excited by a product, be it from a manufacturer or yourself, only to be properly let down by the results? No need to name the manufacturer. Like the blank in this video looked awesome in the mind, looked incredible when assembled, and as it turned out it was great, but it could have been awful.
Or has there been any particular frustration that has been a bug bear of your pen turning experience that has almost made you think "nah, I've had enough of this crap"? Not including the old lathes issue.
Also, I think a smaller diameter of this blank would look great if you could keep the square nature. Assemble the same design in your new Aluminite setup, turn it down so you have the really nice round polished exterior with the square stepped part in the interior., maybe even let the wood meet the surface of the Alumilite so you have both textures (wood and resin) on the outside to touch.
Thanks for the vids, I kinda miss the polishing stages in your vids, but I appreciate that it's repetitive. Maybe keep the steps you have put on single videos in the experimental blanks once in a while.
No, never.
Regards,
Bob
:)
Good morning Bob, great job where can we buy the blanks?
I got this blank from Andrew Amtower. The Classic Nib also sells them.
Regards,
Bob
So it did not bleed? I am having bleeding issues. I have tried sanding sealer, micro meshed it and when I add a finish of any liquid finish it bleeds!
Once the blank is true and ready to be sanded,
I apply one coat of thin C/A glue.
I thin sand the blank to 400 grit.
Clean it with Denatured Alcohol to remove the dust and finish with C/A.
I use this method on all mixed wood blanks and it reduces/stops bleeding.
Regards,
Bob
Ah that looks amazing bob. Tell me does that spectra ply come in those colors or did you paint it?? Really lovely
Thank you Val,
It comes in all different colors, no paint necessary.
Regards,
Bob
having a hard time sourcing different spectraply in the UK. There is one supplier that I've found so far and there is only 7 styles. Someone needs to start exporting!!
There’s a business opportunity for you.
Regards,
Bob
A fantastic pencil Bob. This is going to be my next project... once I get some spectra ply. (Is it me or does that name make you think of James Bond?)
Cheers,
Ben
LOL, I lever thought if it like that.
Regards,
Bob
Wouldn't it be great to save your chips and mix with alumalite pour in pen mold. Then turn into a pen.
Ken Glaser, Westminster CO
I have sent chips to people and they have molded them in Alumilite. The only issue is the chips float and separate in the resin so there are lots of gaps and it really doesn’t look that nice. You would need a way to glue all the chips together tightly like chip board then mold them, that might help.
Regards,
Bob
My drill bit won't go all the way through my pen blank , but it did manage to go all the way through my hand.
Oh man, that stinks. Were you using a vise or holding he blank while drilling?
Www.pennstateind.com the part num is pk7mm I believe. That’s the but I use.
Please use a vise.
Regards,
Bob
did you make the spectra ply or did you buy it?
Hello Elias,
I bought it.
Regards,
Bob
I want it! Is it for sale? I love it!
LOL, my wife snagged it as soon as I took it in the house to show it off.
Regards,
Bob
Where did you buy that tube?
PSI, they come back in packs of ten.
Regards,
Bob
Thanks!!!
