Aerosmith took out a variety of bands on their Get a Grip tour including Mighty Mighty Bosstones, 4 non blondes, soul asylum, collective soul and therapy?. One of the strangest openers was Megadeth given the band’s different style of music. According to the book Rust in Peace: The Inside Story of the Megadeth Masterpiece Mustaine’ struggled with addiction and the only reason the band was on tour with Aerosmith is because the band’s handlers thought in order for mustaine to stay sober he should only be on sober tours. Because of Mustaine’s struggles with addiction the band missed out on some big opportunities including opening for Pantera the same year.
Bassist David Ellefson wrote in is autobiography My Life with Deth: Discovering Meaning in a Life of Rock & Roll things seemed to get off to a bit of a rocky start. Two shows into the tour Mustaine was unhappy with production issues. According to ellefson the band wasn’t getting a soundcheck or sufficient space on stage, meaning the stage had no special backdrop or feeling of being a megadeth show. Ellefson and Mustaine felt that they had already paid their dues and they weren’t some unknown band Aerosmith would typically take on the road. Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler talked to Ellefson and Mustaine directly to smooth things over. It would turn out that Tyler who had gone through his own addictions a decade prior had offered his help to Ellefson at one point prior to the tour who wasalso sturggling with addiction. Remembering that important moment in his life bassist thanked the singer for his help. Tyler was now offering Mustaine any help he needed to stay clean. Things seemed to turnr around at that point or so Megadeht thought. Mustaine would tell the houston chronicle that assurances made to the band about their sound check, playing time, signage, and stage space fell short of what he was promised. Mustaine’s frustrations only grew from there. The interviewer who was at a show in Houston where Megadeth opened for Aerosmith remembered the frontman’s combative and angry attitude in the comments he made to the audience.
7 dates into the tour the band was apparently fired by aoersmith.
Megadeth’s label Capitol Records issued a statement at the time claiming the band quit the tour over ''artistic restrictions” Aerosmith didn’t see it that way as Guitarist Joe Perrry would tell Entertainment Weekly and hint that the band were wimps claiming
”With Megadeth we thought we had a hard-rockin’ animal…that would lubricate the first 10 rows and get the audience ready for us.
Entertainment Weekly supposedly spoke to a person who worked with Aerosmith who claimed it was Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine who was the real reason they were dropped from the tour claiming Mustaine, was a giant pain in the butt saying”He would piss and moan and whine,” ”What he was really upset about was they (Aerosmith) weren’t hanging out with him.”.
Mustaine claimed for his part they walked away from teh tour saying “it’s hard to dunk on someone when they’re walking away.”
There were aparently several moments on tour that created bad blood with Aerosmith. According to spin magazine Mustaine allegedly blew his nose into an aerosmith t-shirt during the tour, something Mustaine didn’t fully deny, but maintained it wasn’t an Aerosmith shirt. Another sore point was a radio interview Mustaine’s gave in which.
He said “Yeah, we think we oughta be headlining, but we don't mind because everyone knows this is Aerosmith's last hurrah." Mustaine would tell Spin Magzine that by the time he made those comments on radio they already wanted off the tour. Steven Tyler replied, in the press saying"Dave, we'd like to help you out. Which way did you come in? Ouch
Ellefson would reveal in his book how the band learned about how they were fired. The band was in lubbock, texas ahead of a scheduled show and went to a local mexican restaurant where the waitress who waiting on their table informed them that she had heard that jackyl was opening for Aerosmith that night, not Megadeth. Ellefson felt deflated given that they had also lost the opportunity to tour with Pantera and White Zombie , and had to cancel Japan not once but twice.Ellefson would also claim in his book that it would soon spell the beginning of the end for guitarist Marty Freidman.
Mustaine reflected back on where the anger came from during an inteview with the houston press revealing

The story of Jason Becker. Amazing neoclassical metal guitarist. Records two albums with Marty Friedman. Then releases a solo album. Then is hired as David Lee Roth’s guitarist and records an album for them. But he gets diagnosed with ALS during the recording and can’t tour. Now in 2020, he’s completely immobile, but he STILL continues to make music

You should do one on Ben Kweller's first band Radish which was supposed to be the 'next Silverchair' or big 15 year old band back in '97. It's a pretty interesting story...Nirvana's former manager Danny Goldberg actually signed them and before that there was a bidding war on Radish with Madonna courting them for her Maverick label. They even did played a party at the home of Interscope Records in which Axl Rose and Dr. Dre were in attendance and this was '97 so during the Axl years where he wasn't in the public(noted in third link below). Radish was actually pretty damn good, very catch songs but their album came out in '97 which was when alternative/post grunge was fading fast....same year nu metal was starting to pick up hot. They never caught traction...they were mix between Nirvana and Weezer so it wasn't orginal in 1997 but still pretty damn good especially for high schoolers.

For those out of the loop bands *not* getting a soundcheck is a very big deal. A band has to soundcheck with the sound engineer to make sure that all output (guitars, drum and bass) are heard by both audience *and band* is essential for a band to perform. e.g: If the rhythm guitarist cannot hear the lead on stage or if the summer cannot hear the guitars it will lead to big problems.
Edit: It is basically a deal breaker. It's like not getting to test drive a car before buying it. I've done lives with and without soundchecks prior to going hot. Those without soundchecks lead to nobody hearing anything other than the bassist.

A personal story, I attended the Painkiller Tour (Testament, Megadeth, Priest) in 1991, just a couple years before the Aerosmith tour discussed in this video. At the time, Megadeth was the primary draw for me, it was the first and only time I saw them live. (Don't get me wrong, I was excited to see Testament and Priest as well). I have no idea what goes into producing the audio quality for a rock concert on a technical level, but I was IMMEDIATELY disappointed in the sound quality that was produced for Megadeth. ESPECIALLY when Judas Priest hit the stage, the sound was ****ing amazing and even in the moment, I suspected that all the sound engineers hadn't been fully present in giving us the best possible Megadeth sound, but were instead all taking their time getting everything finely tuned for Priest, during Megadeth's set. I felt a bit robbed as a Megadeth fan, even as I was SUPER OVER IMPRESSED by Priest. I have described this experience to my friends many times over the years. What's the takeaway, I dunno, this is just my personal anecdote. Maybe Dave or his manager just didn't know or develop the skills to communicate properly with the sound crew.
This is my first experience with your channel, and I like what you are doing! Subscribed!!!!!

I saw that tour as well. Phenomenal show!! I didn’t feel the same disappointment with Megadeth’s sound quality, though it could be that we were at different venues. Or more likely that I went in expecting the quality to be less (I was finding this to be a consistent reality for opening bands) and was pleasantly surprised at how killer they still sounded. I saw them again 8 years later at Ozzfest and what I found notable there was the incredible contrast live between the newer material and pre-Youthanasia. Like two different bands almost. Hearing “Trust” followed by “Holy Wars” for instance, especially given that it was the same lineup who recorded both and were on stage (I think it was the last tour with Marty and Nick).

I'm a huge Aerosmith fan from their first LP through Draw the Line. Draw the Line was the last LP I liked from them. When they got sober & went pop rock, I bailed. I'd seen them live on all their tours from Get Your Wings through Draw the Line. I only went to this one to see Megadeth & they did not disappoint, they were great. I stayed for Aerosmith too, & fortunately about 80% of their show was all the old songs from their 1st LP thru Draw the Line. Their encore was Train Kept A Rollin'. They were great too, except for the 5 or 6 pop hits they had that they played. But, just to get to hear their hard stuff was def worth it to put up with their bubble gum pop songs. All in all a great show. Just months before that I had got to see Megadeth in a small venue called The Bomb Factory in Deep Ellum in Dallas with Corrosion of Conformity as the opening act. I saw this Aerosmith show at Star Lake outside of Pittsburgh in early July of '93. Jackyl and Poison opened up for them if I remember correctly. I read in either Hit Parader - or similar - that Megadeth was going to join the tour right after that and I was bummed, as I was a huge Megadeth fan and had missed their Countdown tour (frustrating story for another time). Although I didn't understand how they got on the bill with Aerosmith, considering being nowhere near the same musical style, I would much rather had seen them than the 2 I did see. It was no surprise to find out that they were kicked off the tour shortly thereafter though.

Back then Aerosmith was at the top of there game. They had great shows and were a tight band. They would take out on tour bands they felt needed a little tuning up. Skid Row, Guns and Roses both got that treatment and there shows after the Aerosmith run showed it.
Megadeth did not take it that Aerosmith was a better band than them and did not take the under the wing attitude that Aerosmith was putting out. Management also didn’t want one of the toxic twins to relapse and the Dave’s were not going to be told no party favors in the arena.
    So they were gone.

The concert seemed over when megadeth was done , poor black sabbath had to come out after Megadeth and the crowd broke up and just was deflated when sabbath played. IF they stole the show from sabbath mind you no ozzy, they would easily steal the show from aerosmith night after night.
