Stone Temple Pilots roots date back to the city of Los Angeles where they formed in 1989 under the monicker Mighty Joe Young. They gained a pretty big following, but soon changed their name after a blues musician was found to already own the rights to their moniker. They would eventually settle on the name Stone Temple Pilots and they signed to Atlantic Records. The band quickly got to work on their debut album Core, which happened to be produced by Brendan O’Brien who coincidentally enough, would work with grunge acts pearl jam and soundgarden.
The members of Stone Temple Pilots tempered their expectations with drummer Eric Kretz telling classic rock “Since we’d signed to Atlantic Records, which was one of the greatest labels in the world, I was like: ‘If we fail and get dropped, there was no coming back from getting dropped from the top, That was my biggest fear” he’d say
Released in September of 1992, Core spawned six huge songs, only three of which were released as singles that are still staples of rock radio to this day including “Sex Type Thing”, “Creep”, “Dead and Bloated”, “Plush” “Wicked Garden,” and “Crackerman”. The album would peak at number 3 on the billboard charts, selling over 8 million copies and became the band’s most successful album of their career. The album was also helped by MTV who heavily promoted the videos for sex type thing and plush. While the band had a lot to celebrate, critics were split over the group. While the album did garner some good reviews, the band also received some pretty harsh criticism.
Music journalists claimed the band "ripped off" of grunge acts which were popular at the time most notably Pearl Jam. Others contended the band was a creation of the record label to cash in on the popularity of the alternative rock scene, which was spurred by bands from the Pacific Northwest. The members of Stone Temple Pilots weren’t even from Seattle as they all hailed from different parts of the US and eventually met in California The band was also slammed by some critics who accused them of glorifying rape with their song “Sex Type Thing” which was released as the first single from the album. It was ironic given that according to Weiland, the song deals with abuse of power, "macho" behavior, and society’s attitude toward women, often treating them as objects he'd claim.
Entertainment Weekly's Deborah Frost wrote in her review of Core that the "Stone Temple Pilots' hit 'Sex Type Thing' could be Mike Tyson's rape defense transcribed into grunge rock. It's unclear whether STP, which sounds like it has crash-landed Pearl Jam into Alice in Chains, is condemning or identifying with its narrator. With a real point of view, this band could be bigger than an accident" she'd claim. while the Village Voice, claimed the band didn’t stand out from their peers, despite their best power chords.
Even the hit MTV show Beavis and Butthead had one episode where both of the shows characters are watching the video for the song Plush and mistake it for Pearl Jam. They would go on to compare Scott Weiland to Eddie Vedder, with Butthead concluding, “both bands suck” with beavis firing back saying “Pearl Jam doesn’t suck. They’re from Seattle”
Even Saturday Night Live got in on the ribbing as you can see David Spade discussing the band on his old segment hollywood minute here. And in music Stone Temple Pilots were on tour. They were great the first time i saw them when they were called Pearl Jam.
It wasn’t just critics who threw mud at the band as even their tourmates The Butthole Surfers also thew some shade their way. During an appearance on Headbanger’s Ball in 1993, Butthole Surfers Gibby Haynes poked fun at the band’s sound and host Rikki Rachtman made some remarks that angered Scott Weiland. Way too simplistic of an answer. Pavement were from California. Sonic Youth from New York. Dinosaur Jr from Massachusetts. Silver Jews from Virginia, Yo La Tengo from New Jersey, Pixies from Massachusetts, Built to Spill from Idaho, Flaming Lips from Oklahoma. Nine Inch Nails from Ohio. Guided by Voices from Ohio. Wilco from Chicago. Sleater Kinney from Portland. Rage Against The Machine from California. REM from Georgia. Fugazi from Washington DC. Radiohead, Stereolab, Blur, Primal Scream, Happy Mondays, Spiritualized, Oasis, Pulp and The Verve from the UK, U2 from Ireland, My Bloody Valentine from Ireland, Neutral Milk Hotel from Louisiana, Godspeed You Black Emperor from Canada. Those are the ones that came quickly from the top of my head. Stone Temple Pilots' problem with most people, not just critics, is that they were not very original. They always sounded like they were copying the sound of other bands in their era or before without providing any fresh take on it. Incredibly derivative.

@poop face Thanks for the answer, poop face! I didn't know how to put it into words. I never understood the hate, I loved Core and played it hundreds of times when I bought it back in 93 (albums took a bit longer to arrive where I come from). I thought the guitar sound was deep, loud and atmospheric at the same time; nothing to do with what Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains (which I also love) were doing. And Purple was also great. I'm totally with you, they had talent even when they took a dump
Almost every band in history has copied someone.
@@cactaceous A lot of those bands were good bands, but most never achieved the same prominence as STP and those that did had *much* different sounds. STP sounded *kind of* like the Seattle bands, but not really because every Seattle band had a different unique sound. STP got shit for the same reason Pearl Jam did, they were too close to the "mainstream."
Scott Weiland also had some similar vocal tics to Eddie Vedder so the "copy-cat" label stuck. Personally I like some of their stuff, but they do sound a bit generic at times and they had a tendency to bury their songs in affect.
Pick out the bass lines on almost any STP song. Dude’s bass is insanely underrated.
Same with the guitar parts as well.
@Illusion Did you actually play the songs as written or did you play the tablature barre chords that everyone always gets wrong? The reason the bass is so envious to you is because Rob DeLeo wrote every song you probably played in that band and he wrote it on guitar first.

The fact is that people will be listening to and enjoying STP for eternity, while you probably can't name a single music critic and their industry is dead
Lester Bangs was a great writer who used music criticism as a vehicle (and I still don't care about his opinions on music, as his tastes are completely different than mine.)
But yeah music critics are useless hacks and reading reviews, or even worse taking them seriously, will lead to missing out on great music.

I admit I haven't listened to my STP albums since the 90's. And I was really into them back then. But then again, I don't really listen to AIC very much either. Some of it doesn't stand the test of time for me, but that's just my personal preference. I'm sure many people still enjoy the band to this day.

@@pfdrtom Critics of those types of bands in particular, were in most instances looking down at the people who actually listened to them more than the bands themselves even. The typical elitist attitude. They know what's best for you. Here, listen to some Bruce Springsteen.

STP and Scott Weiland definitely had their own unique style and sound, that's why they had such a huge fan base. One of my favorite bands ever!

They had good songs that were never played to the masses. All their albums (except the last one) I enjoyed all the nuances of their music from the first track to the last. A few bands are able to fill their album with good songs. Radiohead is one of those bands. Maybe it's just preference.

Dean Deleo is a supremely underrated guitar player. Great tones and he never overplayed...he played what was right for the song. The rest of the band were great too, including weiland.
Their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th albums completely transcended grunge. Scott was one of the last convincing rock stars, and STP had the best bass player in all of rock (after John Paul Jones).
@@timgriffith9333 "Aura" and haircut was it for Liam as his voice was really only based on I Am The Walrus and he had no moves to speak of. Weiland's voice was transcendent and he had all kinds of moves.

I never understood the comparison to Pearl Jam. Core was a great album and Stp changed thier sound and wrote many great albums.

I saw them in 1994 and they were great until some knob hit Weiland in the eye with something and they left the stage. and didn't return. I have always wondered if that person made it out of the amphitheater alive.
I saw them in '96 and Scott was so hammered on heroin they ended up sitting down after 3 songs to do their lame Unplugged act. It was the worst show I've ever been to by far.

scott was all about the shirt-that-you-wear! and the jackets! it was, first and foremost, gonnabe implied, if not explicitly described by the sleeves!
I don't understand how anyone can hate Core. That album is absolutely incredible. Saw them live 3 times between 99 and 03 in small NYC venues and they were a great live band. Played with so much power and passion. I really miss STP.

In my opinion Scott Weiland was one of the best front men of all time; Dean Deleo has such a lush beautiful tone to his guitar playing; And Robert is a truly underrated bassist. Scott was a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and that gave him some fierce demons. He tried to tame them with drugs and ultimately ended up OD’ing in his tour bus in Blooomington, MN. So sad! May he RIP.
His time in Velvet Revolver was great. I wish he could've beat his demons. He reminded me of a hard rocking David Bowie.

Never understood all the hate they got. I get that no one likes a band that rips off other musicians but I still don't hear Pearl Jam or anyone else in there. Just always sounded like a solid rock band with catchy songs. I wouldn't even consider them grunge, but whether they are or not it's just a label. Just like what you like.
They ALWAYS had their own sound. That twangy guitar most notably in the Core and Purple albums, was their signature. You could always tell who it was. There was never anything remotely close to anything Pearl Jam was doing. They were always their own band.
i just thought they weren't that good, didn't care for their music. and i have no idea what the "critics" were saying, i just turned the station if their song came on, to me it was like a simple pop grunge thing.

STP was amazing !!! They had and still have a huge following with black people. We are huge fans of STP, Deftones, and Linkin PArk.

Loved them from the first time I heard them. No way did they sound like Pearl Jam. Stp is still one of my favorites. I don’t pay any attention to critics. 8 times platinum for core and 6 times platinum for purple, that doesn’t happen if you suck as a band. They were an incredible band and I miss Scott weiland. I just don't see where STP sounds like Pearl jam... Lead vocals on Pearl jam are completely different than STP... I never cared for Pearl jam but I love STP . Scott was such a great talent.. great talent for Velvet revolver also... It's so sad Scott couldn't get help for his addiction..RIP Scott W
Core and purple were two of the best albums of the 90s. They are still amazing.

I’m one of the few STP fans that would agree about Purple over Core. The album overall was more blues inspired, and had a had a great groove

It got me from the first time I listened to Core.
I used to trick coworkers by raising the volume "so you can hear the dude's pipes". The ones that were into foreign music eventually caught on, but those that liked regaetton and the likes would get caught off-guard everytime. It was kinda my little petty revenge for always sticking to the type of music they'd wanna hear all day instead of respecting one another. Good times :'D
PS: There's a version of Weiland singing the initial lines of Dead and Bloated while recording. It's priceless. I saw it a couple years back but couldn't find it again.

I bought the Core album after I saw them in Atlanta in late 92. Been a fan since...I met Scott when I was working at a strip club afew years later, when they were working on the "Purple" album. He was very chill, and a super nice dude... His death was a terrible loss to music...rip 😔

I never thought of Stone Temple Pilots as “grunge”. I think STP fell into the same category as The Cult, no label. I just thought of both bands as plain old rock. Scott Weiland is tons of a better singer than Eddie Vedder.

My top three are Layne Staley Scott weiland and Chris Cornell... I don't care for Eddie at all. He is so overrated. The general public hails him is like the Messiah of grunge or something to it's horrible.
Caught Dancin Days on the radio today, Weiland's voice was beautiful. My favorite band, I dont listen to them at 43 nearly as much as I did between 14-20 but they will always be my favorite band.
Interstate love song is a phenomenal song, every time I hear it I cry.

I never once heard any similarities to Pearl Jam in their music and was a huge fan of STP and Pearl Jam from day one! To me they were clearly very different and had their own places in the 90s. It's so sad that Scott's life went to the $#@&er after their third album and never recovered. He was an amazing front man in all of his bands. RIP Scott... You were a legend!
Stone temple pilots were and are awesome. 4's "Atlanta" is one of my all time favorites. They were smarter and more musically inclined than most of their contemporary bands.
Totally agree. Atlanta is a beautiful song. Scott's voice is rich and smooth. His vocals at the start of the song are reminiscent of Jim Morrison.

I always wished Dean Deleo was the guitarist in my band. Also, I am the guitarist in my band.
I'd have given my left nut back in the 90's when I was a fledgling song writer in a rock band, to just write a couple songs with the Deleo brothers.
i would not be happy if, theoretic'ly this guy was brought in and i was told, 'ok, we're gonna have this guy help you cover the guitar bits'... on one level i would be thrilled, don't get me wrong! but i would not even hesitate , and i'd say, 'we're-not-worthy, man!!'
RIP Scott Weiland. STP was a one of a kind band. Scotts collaboration with Slash in Velvet Revolver was also an awesome band. STP and Soundgarden made the 90's bearable for me.

Both are way overrated imo, esp PJ. At least STP had some memorable guitar songs. To this day, I don't get why anyone would make a big deal over PJ. Their songs are boring and EV's voice is irritating.

I am 39 and never knew they had any issues. They were always just another kick ass rock band with some jams to me. NEver compared them to anything.

RIP Scott 💐😞 STP was one of my favorite grunge bands since they hit the scene. I count myself as a fortunate man to have seen them play at Riverport in St. Louis back in the day. It was a killer show. I’ll miss them forever.
Anyone who thought "Sex Type Thing" glorified rape is in such wretched shape that it's a miracle they can get out of bed, much less write for a magazine.
In an interview I read Scott said is was just "good old BDSM", makes sense when you look at the lyrics. Agreed, nothing to do with rape. People like what they like.

Swinging on chain, singing " wanna have to hurt u too" I went out and bought it! Soon as the cd kicked in Dead & Bloated & wicked garden it was metal like! They were heavier than PJ! Plush was different. Their 1st album is a better debut than 10 to me
Creativity and artistically they are nothing like bands from Seattle!!! STP stands completely on their own drawing more from late 70’s new wave.

I will never understand the critical response to STPs debut. I remember buying that CD simply for Plush. Then the whole album turned out to be basically flawless. They were all very talented musicians and their liver performances are still among the absolute best shows I've ever been to. Scott on stage was something to behold. And his voice was always spot on. They were and will always be one of the most underrated groups, despite finally getting their comeuppance.
We were so spoiled for amazing new bands in the early 1990s that STP wasn’t the best of the bunch. If “Core” was released today we would all say it was the best album of 2020.
I'd say the first 4 STP records are great, Purple and Tiny Music even fantastic. Really don't get the criticism...
I think journalism wasn't prepared for the 90's honestly. Every band trolled them, "the youngs" were pretty much against whatever they say. All these bands rejecting the mainstream. Fnm, pantera, every grunge band, i'm probably missing something. The were not prepared for it.

@Rob Melrose Agreed. I liked "The Fixer" from a few years back, and Eddie's tunes from the movie "Into The Wild", but everything else seems mediocre to me.
True. STP's discography is more interesting and consistent imo. I like PJ but after Vitalogy the quality of their albums dipped a lot.

Hell yes. I feel like after pearl jam's first 5 albums they haven't put out anything good since. All of stp albums are good.
STP's music has held up amazingly well. I can hear the similarities in some of their songs to other bands of the era. But they are very good on their own merits. And Scott is very different than other front men of that time.
There are almost no bands that you can’t hear similarities in some of their songs to other bands of the era.
Including Butthole Surfers. But most of their music was being weird just to be weird. Not making great original music nobody else could do.
@@AlphanumericCharacters I completely agree. That's why I feel bands like STP and Bush got a raw deal from critics when they were criticized so much. Even some of the grunge bands were derivative of other bands that came before them.

Stone Temple Pilots are one of my all time favorite bands. So many good songs. That guitar tone in "DOWN" will still give me shivers if I put it on right now. Love those guys forever.
Love STP. Grateful I got to see them perform live during a time Scott was sober.
STP is my favorite of the grunge bands. Every album was a strong release.
@Rob Melrose that album had too much filler for me. Some good cuts, Coma included. Alot of dross too though. It's Purple for me

Pearl jam are overrated IMHO, their hits were great but I skip a lot of songs on those albums. Every song on core is good to awesome

I like both bands, but I’ve listened to STP way more over the years than Pearl Jam since I was a 16 year old in 1992 through today.
No mention of the Talk Show phase with Dave Coutts as frontman?? STP is a phenomenal band...point-blank-simple!!
STP were, decades ago and even still today, the most solid rock band. No other band of that time touched my soul and brain as much as them.
when Plush came out, everyone i knew back then thought these guys sounded like Pearl Jam... I think it was due to the fact that both Scott Weiland and Eddie Vedder had the same kind of deep, baritone singing voice on their debut album. Obviously after that STP grew into their own style and i never thought the bands were even remotely similar.
Scott's vocals on Plush are in a similar delivery to Vedder's and his vocals on Creep are reminiscent of Kurt. The production of Core has that murky gritty sound of Ten and Alice in Chains Facelift. To me that's where the comparisons stop. Musically...Core is a heavier/darker album than Ten. Everything they put out after Core solidified them as one of the greatest/most original rock bands of the 90's!!
Yep, this was a general trend in the 90's and fundamentally different from a lot of trends out of the 80's that had a lot of high pitched male vocals, tenor, falsetto or screaming metal.
Honestly I liked STP much more than Pearl Jam and Nirvana. Musically and technicality, STP were much better.

@@jespacey Yes, their songs were also much more versatile than PJ and Nirvana. Scott also does this dual voice. Like the big, low grungy voice in Plush and the thin, raspy whiny voice in Lady Picture Show. He does it both in Sex type thing. I always thought this was unique.
both stone gossard and mike mccready are technically better guitarrist than dean deleo... and also dave grohl is better than erik kretz

Best concert of my life was STP in Cleveland in May 08 while travelling home from London to Perth. Memories...
The reason STP stands out is layered. Eric, Dean, and Robert are excellent players with a strong, palpable chemistry that most other musicians might spend a lifetime trying to find. Scott was a showman and one of the best vocalists in rock, in his prime. They had the edge, the mystique, but most importantly, they had the songs. They're legends for Interstate and Big Empty alone, yet they have an extensive catalog of quality tunes. Their live shows left you transfixed. I think the biggest criticism of them was that they weren't the most original but that's a cop out, meaningless assessment. They found the secret formula, and that's all that matters. STP is a legendary band.

STP was always closer to Alice in Chains in my book. Heavier than PJam. Weiland really came into his own down the line. True rock star
I love 90s grunge/rock bands. But when i got into STP, i thought they were criminally underrated when compared to the likes of PJ, SG, and AIC. Their musicality is (in my humble opinion) unmatched during that era, specially the Purple album. The Deleo brothers have great musical tastes and Scott was just so amazing live. A true rock frontman

I never thought that they sounded like Pearl Jam. They were solid in their own way.
Tiny music songs from the vatican gift shop is an S tier album. This album is a masterclass in guitar tone. Thought the barely there vocals just bled humanity throughout the album making it feel more intimate and making an interesting counterpoint to the guitar tones. The low mids and fragile 1-2k falsetto of Scott's voice in a nest of generous saturation from the bass surrounded by lovely full chords chiming in the open space really seemed to lock things together for me. As an added bonus there was much Led Zeppelin reflected in this music!
I hated Tiny Music when it come out, because there was no acoustic ballads and Scott voice was wrecked due to his crack habit. It took me while, but once it click, it become my favorite STP album.
They completely ripped off the legendary Redd Kross, the band that toured with STP just prior to them writing and recording Tiny Music
Heavy raw and what's more defined grunge! What the critics didnt like is when they expanded their sound! So underrated! One of the best bands ever!
That is crazy. STP bridged, and solidified alternative, punk, classic, grunge, and so many music genres.

@@lilbatashlyn I'm neither a hardcore fan or professional critic or journalist, but I will tell you that Metallicas first 3 albums are their best 3, EASILY. They just seemed to lose the dangerous ,DIY thrash icon vibe after Cliff Burton tragically died. And Justice for All had a few bangers, but there were a few that would have fit on the eponymous black album.
Type O Negative. Critics weren't kind to them at all. Mtv liked them at least.

Rap is a lot like hollywood, they cant come up with anything original, so they steal beats from good songs and ruin those good songs with the dumbest lyrics on the planet.

I stopped listening to rap after tupac died. I´m basically a golden era fan. after 1997 Rappers become too egocentric and predictable. I like political and conscious rap.

And it's all rap now. Actually pop. But no elements of hip hop. Very few exceptions, so hipsters can chill! I know there's still SOME trying to keep real authentic hip hop alive.
Honestly their first 5 albums were great and all have a different sound. They really were awesome.

STP will always be one of my all time favorites. Last band I saw live.
It’s simple. The critics were having a love fest with the seattle bands. STP releases core and steals some thunder from the Seattle grunge bands.
Started spinning rock records at 5-6 years of age (late, late 60’s 1970) yeah I’m that old. The riffs from core are along the lines of zeppelin and are of a greater sound than PJ
Core is in the top 5 greatest albums of the 90’s(any genre)IMHO.

I think Down had a chunky Tool-like sound to it, sorta ultra heavy.
@Rob Melrose heaven & hotrods was another good one! that whole album has a split sound. I goes from light, Beatles-esque rock to ultra heavy grunge. Songs like Down are basically alternative metal.
Stone temple was the best band out of that time. They were bringing back rock music. If the best thing like the presidents of the united states and bands like that then give me STP anytime.
All I remember about Core is listing to that album a million times. It was fantastic.

Stone Temple Pilots hold their own and stand up as a great band that came from what was a great time for rock music we were really spolit with the amount of great music put out during the early nineties to mid nineties
Perhaps they sounded like Toe Jam on that first record, but they leaned toward a more retro/70s sound as time went on and was all the better for doing so. "No. 4" is one of my all-time favorites.
No. 4 is the most STP album of all of them. Great poppish hooks as always, with an extra dose of hard edged aggression and the most "crisped and burnt" corrosive record production. B O'B was doing Korn's "Issues" that same year I think, and both albums have that "fry the tape" edge to their sound. That was a golden age of rawk.
STP were HUGE, and they were still UNDERRATED. They had it down good with their music.
I have a Mighty Joe Young flyer for the Coconut Teaser in LA. Never liked STP, but I'm proud of that flyer and happy to see them. Interesting enough, PJ was my favorite band in 93, never has changed, Polly is not afraid of evolving and aging. Great video by the way, I enjoyed it. PS

STP is my favorite band but they did cash in on a trend. They lost their popularity because Weiland lost his baritone voice and did the opposite of what made them popular.

Lot's of bands were more or less forced to sound like a "Seattle" band at that time. They weren't alone. I think STP came into their own after CORE because there wasn't as much pressure from the label to sound like someone else.
The only bands “forced” to sound like a “Seattle” bands were manufactured bands and no talent bands.
@@1020donny Some, yes. But some good bands got caught up in this and came into their own later. STP were one of those bands. Not taking anything away from CORE... great album but you can tell Scott was directed to record his vocals with a certain Eddie Vedder twang to them. He lost that in the albums that followed.
I love Scott Weiland's music in general. Many of my favorite songs EVER were sung by him... Stone Temple Pilots got lots of undeserved hate, Core was great, Purple and Tiny Music were AMAZING!! Other albums also... had their moments. :)

Stone Temple Pilots have a musicianship that Pearl Jam and not even Nirvana could touch, mostly due to the wonder twin powers of the DeLeo bros (Dean & Robert). And Scott's lyrics were right up there with Cobain's and Layne Staley's. They were a special band and more than somewhat underrated for a group as commercially successful as they initially were.
