  • With over 16 species there is definitely some for you. Uncarina plants are easy to grow either in the tropical landscape or in greenhouse culture. Set as seeds in a communal pot, and you are on your way. Try cuttings, although I found that difficult to master, and propagation will work.. Definitely worth growing, and you should gfive the genus a try.
Here is general list of of Uncarina species.
Uncarina roeoesliana Uncarina peltata Uncarina grandidieri Uncarina leandrii
Uncarina decaryi Uncarina stellulifera Uncarina sakalava Uncarina turicana
Uncarina leptocarpa Uncarina perrieri Uncarina abbreviata Uncarina ihlenfeldtiana
Uncarina platycarpa Uncarina ankaranensis Uncarina didieri
WARNING: The fruits have dangerous spines, please handle with care.

From Tucson Arizona here. I grow my U. peltata in a 2gal pot and I've had it for three years. It's never flowered and I'm hoping you can steer me in the right direction. Thanks. Subbed.

Three years is old enough for it to bloom. i would say it needs a winter rest during the year. My plants are left in a cool greenhouse till October, and then are moved indoors. By this time It has lost most of its leaves and stay quietly in a corner. In the early spring when it show signs of growing I return it to the greenhouse where it gets heat and sunlight which encourages the plant to bloom. 👍👍💕

Someone needs to give you a documentary series, you're so knowledgeable and the subject matter of your channel is very intriguing. I just had to subscribe, It's very rare to find a channel that covers such a diverse set of plants!

For some time I have been eyeing Nice in the south of France where the weather is near perfect 9 months of the year. That is the best place to grow these plants.

All correct, only I would add if you plant them out in the garden...think twice if you have pets as those pods will quickly burrow into their fur and skin if you don't pay attention. My cat had one on the tail and after removing it and already myself having felt the pain of the pods a few times? I now make it a rule to cut them off as soon as the blooms fade and toss them into the trash. They are wickedly sharp, sticky, and leave a sting. Removing one from fingers means you need to pry them off with a stick. Not by hand- for sure!

Thanks. Wow, you had the experience of contact with the fruits. I have no pets, but my worst experience was when tried to retrieve a few from a tree in Florida. I learnt my lesson since I assumed that I may be able to get some seeds from them. No, that was just as dangerous, and certainly not worth it But I love the plants. This summer, my six footer which rotted over the winter started to send out shoots from the base and I was very pleased. I almost thought I might lose it, but it is growing again well.

I acquired Uncarina peltata last year. My climate allows one to plant it in the ground but I’m keeping it in a pot to limit it’s size. No flowers so far but I do admire the fuzzy foliage!

Hello from Texas!!! I saw a beautiful, insane 7 foot tall potted specimen of Uncarina grandidieri at a hotel today in Austin and fell in love - I'm considering purchasing seeds and was wondering how old your young plant from the beginning of the video is? I'm in love with it and thank you for this video!!

Thank you. The young plant is around two and a half years old. Give it perfect warm sunny weather and it would grow very quickly. Water and fertiliser is the key to it producing expansive growth. 👍👍

@@kaowinston We have nice weather here in central TX for caudex, succulents, and cacti - I feel very lucky. Looking forward to adding this one to my collection and enjoying it's growth for hopefully decades to come! I especially love the stems and fuzzy leaves. Really appreciate the info and advice and thanks again!

I've been thinking about getting one, I hear they're related to sesame?

You have the perfect weather for these plants. I have had friends in Florida who literally grew these plants in the ground. I am not sure about the sesame connection.
