@@russellsimpson9492 Few people talk about 10mm because it scares the crap out of FBI agents. It has recoil so it is hard to control and the loud BANG gives them PTSD. But when you go to the gun store, unless you want a Glock, they are always on backorder. Plus, when there was a run on ammo, there was usually some 10mm when the shelves were bare.
Yet 45acp and 10mm can be used to hunt large animals. 9mm you can’t, not humane to use as a hunting round. I want the round that can take down bear, boar, deer and Bigfoot. People are far easier to take down then large game.

Governor is the ultimate for car jacker with the right Ammo and the ten has the ability to reach out as far as you would need to in 99 percent of anything i would expect and has the penetration to go through car doors and glass reliably without the same over penetration with standard rifle Ammo. I do run close quarters rounds from Lehigh defense for the 300 and that stuff is awesome
I agree with their assessment about the 9mm, however; I do carry a Sig P238 (380) rather than the 9. And yes, their assessment of female priorities in carrying are also fairly accurate. I chose the 380 because it is easier to conceal under my clothes. Also, I have extremely small hands. I have yet to find a 9 that I can shoot comfortably. I know sub-compact 9s are much smaller than they used to be, but for the most part they are just too large for me. Plus, it is difficult enough for women to carry without imprinting, even a small difference in size or bulk can turn a subtle imprint into blatant very quickly. Luckily, the market has finally caught on to the need for holsters that work with women's clothing and bodies; so there are new innovations in concealed carry options for us.
I prefer the 380 for the weight and the fact it's fail rate is close enough to a 9mm in terms of stopping an attack that it's a minimal thought. A few good hits with a 380 will definitely stun your target the same as a 38spl.
Exactly the size of the gun doesn’t always make it harder for you to shoot the only way you can know that personally is from experience when you’re choosing a gun for you.
I think the Ruger LCP Max is a game changer in the 380 world. I carry it with 12+1 rounds of Inceptor ARX. That's a lot of firepower. Having said that that, I will carry my Glock 43x MOS or Canik TP9 Elite SC every time if what I'm wearing supports it. When I do that, my LCP Max is my backup gun. I have a Clip Draw and a true sheath for front pocket carry.
I'm a woman, 5' 7" 115 solid lbs. And although I in *no way* want to flaunt that I'm carrying, I am not obsessed with having "absolute conceal" at all times that I am. Reason being is that I'm not a fan of sub compact carry guns. I don't like the .380 because I think the rounds are a bit anemic (for my preference). I carry different firearms depending on what I'm feeling on any given day. Most of them are 9mm though. I love both the 9mm and the .45 acp. I keep an AR-15 in my vehicle. I live in Colorado in the mountains and I'm rarely in a city however, you just never can know what kind of a situation you might all of a sudden find yourself in. Better to be prepared or even over prepared than left there to become a victim of whatever. For home defense I like my 410 shotgun as well as my 45 acp. NOTE: Now that we find ourselves living in this brave new world of George Orwell's 1984, having to exist in crazy 2020 of this rediculous cv19 hoax... I say you can not be "Over prepared". The longer I carry the bigger the gun I feel like I can carry 😄 just carried my Glock 20 yesterday iwb with a light attached and a rds. Much bigger than my first carry gun, sig p238. Both are great, but the 10mm is said to rip a hole in space and time so it will probably be my main carry from now on 🧙🏿♂️

That makes sense. Like weights. You get used to concealing small so then it’s easier to find spaces for something bigger. And you can better handle the weight.

I've heard so many ".22 short hunting" stories, I've lost track. I have witnessed enough small caliber vs large caliber displays to know that shot placement is most important. With all that said, to paraphrase an ex Navy officer friend, if I have to pull my side arm, I've made one critical mistake. The 2nd will not be failure to make big holes in the threat. He was serious about practice and shooting the largest caliber/capacity you could with precision. He defined precision as killing playing cards from 10 to 25 yards. He loved to tell folks, "If you can't hit what you're aiming at, that weapon is just a noisy rock." Ex servicemen say some of the slickest stuff.
Robert Cherry when I was AD and had the pleasure our unit got to do bitch work for the seals on a raid. The guys told us you carry the biggest and nastiest round you can effectively carry. Never compromise carrying a smaller caliber if you can handle a larger caliber. Size does matter. Your goal he told us is to cause as much tearing and ripping of tissue, blood vessels as possible. Cause as large of a wound cavity as possible to cause as much as blood loss as possible. If you can destroy the heart and lungs is not always a for sure. Blood loss is and immediate failure of vitals stops them. Smaller calibers take more rounds and DO NOT cause as much of a wound as others. Never shoot a man with a small calibers. He said if 44 magnum had more capacity and was as controllable as 9mm, 40sw, 45acp, they would carry that.
My EDC is my “9mm” (CZ P-10 or G43)! On occasion, I carry my G27 (.40 cal). When my wardrobe is more refined, my Sig P238 accompanies me. All are great shooters & I’m confident with each one, however, my 9mm’s are my choice of carry! Train often, stay alert!
Shoulder Harness: 1911 .45 Waistband: H&K USP 9mm TL:DR: Versatility and a back up. I wear both at once. One round in the chamber, all magazines with one less than full capacity (less spring wear). That's 1+6+6+6=19 on the .45 and 1+14+14+14=43 on the 9mm. This is my preferred carrying setup to protect myself as I go about my day around town. The shoulder harness is great because I can draw easily even in a seated position. The waistband serves as a back up and also a quick draw while standing.
.380 is not obsolete. I carry my .380 when I need to deep conceal and I just can't find a 9mm that is small enough to pocket conceal and not print. I carry my 9 about 90% of the time, but .380 has a valid role. Its better to have a .380 than no gun, and when I have to dress up, and can't wear a coat, ankle or pocket carry of my .380 meets my need.
The department that I work for uses Glock 22 handguns. I’ve been with them for 13 years and because of them I really fell in love with the .40 S&W caliber. I actually used my personal G22 as my every day conceal and carry up until 2019. A few days after Christmas 2018, I bought a Glock 45 and it immediately became my new every day conceal and carry. A few months later I bought a second one that is an MOS. And then I bought a Glock 19X, just because. I 100% agree with how ammo has advanced in recent years. The ammo that I carry in every single handgun that I own is the Underwood Xtreme Defender ammo. And in +P when available in the calibers available. Google search 2016/2017 Joint Agency Ballistics Test For Handgun Self Defense Ammunition. It is I think a 52 page report? Around page 31 or 32 breaks down the Underwood Xtreme Defender ammo. The ammo out performs every hollow point ammo out there in every category and in every caliber the Xtreme Defender ammo is made in.
I carry a 1911 - when asked, I always recommend a tupperware gun in 9mm - take the 1k you save and spend it on ammo, then practice - a lot. Simply based on grip size/shape, Glock and I don't get along. I like Walther & Springfield - then S&W, although the I do like the Glock 43. I love Sig grips, but I haven't had good luck with the guns - fantastic customer service though. But for me, nothing handles as well as a 1911 - I still don't recommend them, and if I were starting over I wouldn't go that route. Favorite caliber - 9x23 Win - 10 rounds in a 1911 with .357 Mag ballistics. It makes me sad that it never got any market share.
All about shot placement.but a .45 does a lot of damage placed in the same place of a 9 mm. The 10mm is going to create a time vortex in the same place. Carry what you feel best. I change every day. I have enough guns in.45,.40 and 9mm and 10mm.
Armando Cora changing between a multitude of different guns that function different like DA/SA to striker or DOA to SAO then manual safety to trigger dingus you are doing yourself a disservice. It makes it hard to build a muscle memory switching all the time for each day to the next. I have 3 pistols I carry a G17, G19, and G43 all same manual of arms, relatively similar trigger feel, same sight config, and similar light activation. I love all kinds of pistols but my carry is what I am betting my life on when I draw it I do not want to be remembering the manual of arms of said weapon in an adrenaline dump. You WILL make mistakes and minimizing the factors that can lead up to the mistake will be to your advantage. If you are not a Glock guy you could go the Sig route like the video advertised with a P320 full compact and sub then to round it out a P365 for small carry or Walter PPQ and PPS I am not a brand snob. Honestly I love CZ pistols I am a total pistol hipster as I have been called. The idea is consistency and repeatability. Invest in a shot timer go to the range and train on the first shot time from the holster and work on splits I bet it might surprise you the results. Then sprint 100m and repeat on a shot timer. If you disagree with me that is also ok maybe I planted a seed for you to at least think about it. Caliber I honestly do not care what you carry just make sure you carry. Be safe and keep shooting!

Lately, since I’m advancing in age and nostalgia is setting in I’m putting all my modern guns aside. I’ve started carrying my Browning Hi Power 9mm or Colt Diamondback .38 with a Browning BDA .380 backup. Done with collecting. Use em if you got em.
I have always carried a 1911 .45 but that is because i just love the 1911, BUT i agree with you guys 100% that shot placement is far more important than caliber. so carry the gun that you shoot best.
Thank you for the PSA about .380's more prone to fail. I tried a number of .380 vendors with a number of different ammo variants and more often than not - ended up with an FTF. Although I really like the form factor for pocket carry - I just couldn't rationalize the risk.
@TXLorenzo 380 fire storm is an actual South American cop gun. Not a knock off. In the states I have noticed certain folks intentionally dumbing down some hand guns. Using cheaper material. Means 10 rounds is 9 rds. Also not 13 from quality or so.
I have 3 carry guns (not all at once): S&W 380, SIG 938 9mm & a Kimber CDP II 45. It all depends on whether I’m pocket carrying or holster carrying. The 380 is the hardest to shoot, followed by the 9mm. The 45 is by far the easiest to shoot & the most accurate.
Every Day Carry (EDC): Glock 19 backup: Ruger LCP2 380 Bedside nightstand: Ruger SP101 357 Mag with flashlight (Have electronic ear protection nearby for immediate use). Vehicle: I live in the suburbs but do not recommend leaving firearms in a vehicle. However, if you must have a firearm in the vehicle unattended ensure safe is mounted to trunk frame to prevent unauthorized access to your firearm. Whenever possible always train to promote safety and keep your firearm in a holster for easy access.
I'm a revolver guy when it comes to self defense. My 38 special is comfortable to wear, concealable, and definitely packs a good enough punch to stop an attacker
I'm a revolver guy as well. I legally conceal carry a 357 magnum J frame. I keep it loaded with 38 special and have a speedloader loaded with 357 magnum. When you consider where I live and how often I interact with strangers, I don't need but so many shots to get one or two attackers off of me. This is why I am able to preference the style and versatility of a J frame revolver over some boring square pistol with more rounds than I am gonna ever need to shoot at one time.
SolarReLaPsE I keep hearing capacity. Para makes a concealable 1911 double stack with 13+1. I’ve carried it for almost 20 years. If I use my shoulder harness I have two spare mags. Otherwise I just drop a mag into my pocket and have plenty of capacity.
Thats fair and all, but with a gen 5 Glock i can do 17+1 and 17 on reserve in another mag. Thats only 5 round less than youre 40 rounds between 3 mags, and thats if you're rocking a shoulder harness which isnt always optimal for people and can really inhibit reload time, which almost makes the extra 5 rounds obsolete. But thats from the perspective of someone who hasnt trained extensively with the shoulder holster. Dont want to seem like I'm knocking those who carry 45, cause Im not at all, just a preference thing for me.
SolarReLaPsE that’s reasonable. My point is it’s possible to carry enough .45 rounds. I always hear people say you only get 6 or 7 rounds in .45 and that’s just not the case. There have been many different .45 double stacks that have plenty of capacity. The reality is I have a 9mm that holds 15+1 and it is no better to carry than my Para Tac-Four. If I’m forced to make that choice I’ll take 13+1 .45 over the 15+1 9mm. Especially how they talked in this video. They say the choice is 6 .45 or 9 9mm. There are plenty of options in double stack. It would be nice if they address those. A double stack .45 is no harder to carry and conceal than a double stack 9mm. There will always be some difference in capacity but it’s not always as bad as I hear people say. And more over if capacity is the only thing that matters why not carry .22? You can easily carry twice as much .22 compared to 9mm.
It all depends on the ratio between carrying capacity and shock inducement. If somebody can figure out the ratio, we will have our pick. If we stack 12 cartridges of 45 caliber against 16 cartridges of 9 mm and come to a conclusion on how much hydrostatic shock those create, we will have our pick. Who knows, you might need 35 .9 mm bullets to 13 .45 caliber to even the balance, we simply don't know but the fact remains the same. You need more 9mm to create an equal balance between 9 and .45 with respect to how many rounds you need to take someone down regardless. If we need 12 rounds or 15 rounds to take down anyone, we might as well start carrying shotguns lol.
The bullet is more important than the caliber. The new low weight for caliber high velocity low recoiling monolithic solids like a Lehigh defense Xtreme Defender in any caliber from 380 to 45 ACP. It's going to take time to be accepted by the masses but they set the new standard for personal defense.
Been carrying a G19 since 2006. I occasionally switch it out with my P07 . The only 380 I would ever carry is my Beretta 84Fs Cheetah . It's a double stack 380 with 13 round cap. Not a fan of pocket pistols . They do have their purpose . I'm a bigger guy . If Glock made a G19 Frame with G17 slide that would be the only gun I'd ever switch too. The M2.0 Compact 3.6" might be occasionally carried once I run some more rounds through it.. In all my carry guns I carry Hornady 135g Critical Duty . Occasionally use 124g HST

I keep hearing that you only get 6 or 7 rounds with the .45. I have a para ordnance double stack. It gives me 13 + 1 rounds of .45. I have carried this gun regularly for almost 20 years. I may be the old man in this discussion but I would definitely prefer 13 rounds of .45 to 15 rounds of 9mm. That’s not to say I won’t carry a 9mm. I’ve got them but if I have the choice I’m taking my .45.
Thats when size becomes a factor. For example a .45 that holds 6-8rds is easily the same size, though usually bigger than a compact 9mm which holds 13-15rds. For example Glock 30 .45 10rd cap is the same size as a glock 19 with 15rds. A para ordinace double stack is more comparable to 9mm guns with 17-20 cap. Most people dont carry full size handguns on a daily. For me a 9mm is just all around more practical. But I love my .45s too. I personally carry the biggest I can, while its still be concealed.
When I worked in security, I carried a para 40-16, so I had about the same number of shots as the 9 guys with more power. And I never figured out why all of these muscular firearms instructors complain about how hard the 40 kicks, I never had any problem controlling it.
These gentlemen make very valid points. I would just like to point out that a handgun is the worst firearm to have in a gun battle. With that being said, accuracy and putting rounds on target in a gun battle is not a range exercise, so having the most ammo in the gun is definitely a plus. However I believe that everyone is glossing over "stopping power". With all things being equal, I want the round carrying the most foot pounds of energy, creating the largest hole, balanced with the amount of rounds being carried. This is why so many Police departments carry .40. I'm not advocating for .40, I'm only pointing out that the widespread use of the .40 was not an arbitrary decision. A Glock 27 is a fine concealed carry weapon .

Nah reason FBI went back was when weighing wound stats to rounds carried to agents ability to control the gun they went back to the 9mm. The fact is most LE don't make officers/agents train hard enough or long enough to become the absolute BEST at what ever they carry. G men(FBI=Gman) USED to carry a 4in barrel .38spl, with old souls who had Military training carrying GI1911. My grandfather shit trap with ex FBI from Late 30s to early 40s up till he hit mandatory retirement. He was much like Clint Smith. You never saw it. He would compete and gun would magically appear and ever round was damn near a bulls eye every time. Man was menace on pistols and M1/M1A/M14/M16. But with shotgun on clay pigeon he struggled till grandpa worked about 6 hours and 5 cases of ammo and truck load of clay birds. They started at 9am, broke 12- 1:30 then on for another 3 hrs. My grandfather had to change up tactics to piss guy off, he pulled out his .410/.22lr over under and would repeatedly smack this guy down shooting clay pigeon with .22 shorts. Guy finally ran three 100 strings with 95+ last one I slapped out a 99 and a chippy. But guy was happy. Shoot what's comfortable, carry as much spare ammo as possible and practice drawing g from odd situation and position. Plan your defense in your head as you sit at stop light. When exiting car THINK as if your armed and under fire. How so you get gun into battery. Then get home, and practice. What you shoot best is what works. If a Curve in 9mm is best suited for you, done. And remember Clint Smith's rule 3 is 2, 2 is 1 and 1 is none. Learn fast identifying any rifle/pistol. Get to where you go to gun shop, drop mag, rack/check slide, release safety. The better you are at adjusting to any weapon makes you less a target. If you only practice with Ruger Blackhawk and your faced with picking up a S&W and can't figure out cylinder release to check it, your now an questionably armed gun nobody. BUT if your familiar with as many as possible your one step farther away from being a victim. My only carry gun, P 90 Ruger, just bought XDm 4.5 tactical, threaded barrel, fde, 13+1 I am familiar with it and as soon as a proper holster is procured I'm gonna carry that for a while. Current Ruger load out is 8+1 185 silvertip, 2/7rd 230 hard ball. XDm has one or two mag 230 federal alum case, and one is full of S & B 230 hardball. But I have 3 /13 Rd mags, add in in chamber and a 10 Rd mag that fits and I can carry full box of ammo!
Statistics wise, 380-45 are all equivalently effective at stopping a threat, so the choice in calibers has much more to do with personal preference. (link below) The majority of instructors use Glock 9mm for EDC because they are (arguably) the most out-of-box reliable and they can carry more rounds than 40 or 45 while also being cheaper to shoot than all of the other calibers. Because 9mm is more available, it also has more options for type of round, and round type plays a major role in effectiveness of stopping a threat. Typical FMJ range ammo has a tendency to over penetrate and waste energy beyond the target, while hollow point types of ammo expend their energy more quickly. 9mm hasn't made any special improvements that other calibers haven't, it's just more popular, so it gets a wider variety that other calibers don't. ua-cam.com/video/nycYxb-zNwc/v-deo.html
Even the idiots that love to say well the FBI carry’s it, they would also know the FBI stayed the 9mm has major issues that require additional rounds to take down a bad guy vs other calibers but were issuing it because of how easy it is for their agents to shoot not because of its effectiveness

Most of us will never use our gun defensively. Sure I’d shoot better with a semi auto full size but would never take it except to leave in the car. I have the SW351pc 7 shot 22mag revolver and larger 8 shot 357mag SW327PC. 351 well, It’s the smallest lightest that I can fit in my pocket and be reliably accurate up to 25yrds under time pressure. I still favor revolvers. No fear of misfires in my jeans, no jams, no safety.
I think you guys make the right argument in the wrong way. The thing with 9mm vs .45 is YES capacity matters, but I don't think it's because shot placement above all, in my opinion, it's better to go with 9mm than .45 for capacity, since pistol rounds typically shoot to slow to cause the kinetic damage faster rifle rounds cause, and most typically, a pistol round will have lethal effect by causing blood bearing organs to leak or causing major blood vessels to leak. With this in mind, the best pistol is the one that allows you to cause the bad guy the highest number of leaks in the shortest amount of time.
I agree, to many youtube commandos have this idea that if ever encountered with a threat its only going to take one round of their preferred caliber to cease it like Clint Eastwood in a western. It makes me laugh.
At the end of the day, which caliber you carry is irrelevant, that you carry is the most important aspect! If all you carry is a .32acp, but carry everyday, everywhere you go, you are better off than the guy with the bigger caliber that leaves it at home because it didn't fit with the outfit. Personally I have more than one good carry gun. In calibers ranging from .32acp all the way to .44 magnum. And I carry what works based on what I'm wearing and where I'm going to! If I'm hiking in bear country .44 magnum. In a tux to a black tie affair, I usually carry my PPK in .32acp! But I'm always carrying something. And I keep a rifle in my vehicle, for those times when more firepower is needed.
I carry CZ P10C. But I will say as far as .380 goes. My Bersa thunders are Rock solid choices for carry. Maybe I got lucky with mine, but they are, so far, super easy to shoot, and extremely reliable.
I was a .45 guy for a really long time and a friend of mine got me shooting 9mm more. Now I don't have a .45 anymore and I carry a 9mm (P365). My wife carried a .380 until she took part in one of my defensive pistol classes and the thing had failures on every other magazine even with multiple shooters. She bought her P365 the next day after running mine the rest of the class.
The same technology that improved the 9mm has also improved the 40 and 45. Some of the newer 45 hollow points expand to nearly 1” diameter and pass all the FBI protocols.
Depends on clothing. Summer day light clothes a 380 Winter heavy coat 9mm Hunting wear 357 mag open carry 45 when in a questionable place IWB The only gun that matters is the one with you in the end.
What about 10round mag capped states? Would you prefer 10 45acp or 10 9mm ( assuming sufficient accuracy with each) ?? 9mm prob easier to carry and lighter, but it subconsciously feels like I'm wasting the 1/3 of the mag I'm carrying...
I would say, weight, and follow up shots would play a factor. Shot placement and energy transferred also play a factor. The 9mm is faster, lighter, has very high pressure and can transfer a massive amount of energy. The .45ACP is slower, heavier, and the amount of energy transferred isn't much higher than you might think. Follow up shots are generally slower in a concealed 45 vs concealed carry sized 9mm. The .45 does leave massive holes. I personally carry a Glock 43/19 most of the time but, on my nightstand lives a full sized Sig p227. Ill even carry a snubbed 38+P from time to time. It's all opinion and how you can effectively end a threat and defend yourself or loved ones. All calibres are better than a sharp stick
In that case I would go with the highest quality 9mm rounds I can find and drive home accuracy and shot placement like crazy. Of course the same outcome can be done with a good .45 round, but I've always liked a 124 grain all copper hollowpoint for the occasion. Plus the added benefit of a more manageable recoil for follow up shots never hurts. Either way, I'd rather not be on the receiving end of either caliber because getting shot is no bueno.
I agree with the "move to a free state" sentiment, but my advice would be whichever one you shoot the best and most accurate. Given equal capacity, I would take a .45 all day long over a 9mm, but I carry .357 Sig, so shooting .45 is easy. If you shoot a 9 better than a 45, carry the 9 and practice with the 45 until you shoot just as good. With all of that said, I've shot and carried everything and found .357 Sig to be the most potent round for EDC. I live in the mountains, so humans are not my only threat. I'm rockin 13 rounds of fire and fury with my EDC and multiple mag backups, so I think I'm good to go. And might I add, I also carry 9 mil pocket pistol so there's that .. lol
Anyone else get the feeling ammo choice even amongst the experts is a game of musical chairs? I would like to know if the terminal ballistics tests that say there is marginal difference between 9mm, .40 and .45 failed to account for the temporary wound channel (that induces shock) being massively larger in the .45/.40, and when the wound channel in the ballistic gelatin returned to "normal" all 3 calibers seemed marginally different. You know, it's like your butt when you're taking a big poo-- it doesn't stay open but that doesn't mean that loaf wasn't serious business.
There are differences in every caliber, they are fan boys like everyone else. Yet remember all calibers are trying to meet the history and performances of 45 and 10mm.

I'm partial to .357 magnum. The stereotype is that 357 means revolver, but I personally think 6 shots isnt enough, and magazines are easier to reload with during an emergency than cylanders. Gunfights wont always end in 6 shots
5.7x28mm FN is the best pistol calibre, period. Higher capacity, lower over penetration, higher armour penetration, higher velocity, similar stopping power with good ammo, lower recoil. Change my mind.
Depends on if you're worried about over penetration or not. If dude is wearing a cheap armor vest, then yes and if you're attacked in a crowded place, then no.

This is overkill of a subject. The average Joe on the street needs to focus on so many other things about concealed carry than caliber and number of rounds. Buy a gun. Learn to shoot and handle it well, then do everything within your reasonable power to NEVER have to use it against another human being. This kind of drivel caters to the wannabe Rambo or John Wick.

Someone who is highly trained in Jui-Jitsu knows they will win any hand to hand fight. They don't go around showing off their skills by starting fights but they damn sure will end them. Most gun owners that are highly trained in shooting have a preferred caliber but are proficient with many. They still hope they never have to use it against another human being.
with immense respect, while it doesn’t have stopping power... the 45ACP is MUCH better than the 9mm. the 45ACP’s Area does 40% more damage and has a 40% greater chance of scoring a critical hit. the average expanded area (Federal HST 230gr - .85” = .57 sq-inches) is 40% greater than the average 9mm expanded area (Federal HST Micro - .72” = .40 sq-inches).... think about it... when you play a video game... and get the chance to pick up a weapon with 40% more damage and 40% increased critical hits, you swap for it because it helps you win. you can argue that repeated shots are quicker with a 9mm... but NOT 40% faster. and usually your first few shots are your best because of aim and surprise... and basically, two 45ACPs are worth almost three 9mms. magazine capacity?! at 13+1 rounds (G21) or even 10+1 rounds (G30... same size as a G19) and using a smooth recoiling Glock... the 45ACP is a no brainer. especially in states like California where you have a 10+1 magazine restriction. confirm the math for yourself... 40% more damage and increased critical hits is a BIG deal. the wound channel is dependent on Area x Length (adequate penetration FBI 12”-18”)... so having a 40% increase in Area gives a 40% larger volume wound channel and a 40% increase that the bullet will nick an artery or critical central nervous system component... that’s just a fact. i’m an engineer and i did the area equations myself based on lucky gunner’s testing of the best expanding Federal HST ammunition... and i gave every benefit of the doubt to the 9mm... Area is based on “squaring” the radius x pie... so it increases exponentially... that’s why it is such a big difference. the 45ACP has a 40% greater Area... i put the math in my first comment... check it for yourself. 45ACP - .85” = .57 sq-inches 9mm - .72” = .40 sq-inches .57/.40 = 1.425 = 142.5% = 142.5% or roughly ~40% greater for 45ACP my math checks out. the FBI and law agencies decided to go with 9mm for a lot of reasons... including low round cost and capacity... but for personal citizen CCW... the 45ACP is the better round... it just is... trust the math AND your intuition... it just is. keep an open mind... thinking about something in a different way is cool :)
Brian Roberts thanks for the vote of confidence. i have my Glock 30 loaded with Fed HST... i know i’ve got an amazing tool and the rest is up to me. somewhere along the line the 9mm caught up to ball 45ACP... but nobody talks about the 45ACP catching up to the 12 gage slug in diameter (.85” vs .88”). it isn’t traveling as fast as the 12 gage... but the wound channel it cuts is nearly the same... and that’s incredibly impressive from a CCW that shoots 10+1 rounds. have a good night and stay safe! :)
I agree with these guys. The best carry gun is the one you can put on target the most effectively. I love my 9mm but my friend carries his .45 and is super comfortable with it. We have each found our best carry gun.
I want to see a FN FiveseveN subcompact. 15 rounds of SS190 5.7x28 in a subcompact would beat 9mm all day - and have less recoil and better penetration, too.
I moved from the Sig C3 1911 compact to the FN FiveSeven 3 years ago. 6 months ago, I purchased the new slimmed down version of the 20rd variety. It is just a tad bigger...and I mean a very small difference between the Sig 4inch and the new .57. With the alien gear ghost holster, it is literally invisible at my 4:30. Obviously I don't need to tell you that it has far superior accuracy to any other round (at pretty much any range) and it's stopping power is unmatched, but with the FN penetrators in my magazine, it pierces body armor as well. So if your willing to pay the high price (they run anywhere from 1300-1500 depending) I suggest you go ahead and follow through on you thought! #WillNotBeInfringed
Is that the AP round? I know they did testing on the civilian rounds and it was shown to be as effective as 9mm ball. That a owner needs the AP rounds to be really effective

Carry whatever gets you hits; the stopping power of every round is zero when you miss. For a lot of people, a 9mm will be the right answer, but I wouldn't default to it without some analysis. My first carry gun was a .38 Special. Nowadays I carry a .40 or a 9mm and sometimes a .380 in reserve. If I were just going for deterrence/scare factor, open carrying my .44 Magnum should do the trick. And yes, I can hit with it.
I love that the 9mm guys always say "with modern rounds it's just as capable as the .45". It's almost like they don't realize you can get those same "modern rounds" in a larger caliber. There is absolutely no replacement for displacement. But having said that, my next weapon will be a 9mm simply because of higher capacity, and quicker follow up shots.

Colion nailed it.. 380 has become obsolete. The advantages used to be the selection of pocket pistols and the price of the round. Now not only is 9 mm cheaper than 380 where I live, but they are making 9 mm pistols so compact that there really is no reason to purchase a 380.
I am reading the comments below.. I carry a g21 .45 acp and have been for 25 years. This was a duty firearm I purchased from the department, when he department transitioned to another firearm .This firearm is sooo accurate. I shoot one hole (slow fire) at 10feet, so I know I can take a head shot if necessary within a room length. Also I can engage multiple targets quickly and accurately at 10 yards no problem. The G21 carries 13 + one in the chamber. 14 rounds of .45acp. I dont think I am giving anything up here at all. I will say that most posts below say they carry a 9mm EDC and by my bedside I carry a .45acp. That tells me most think the .45 acp is going to be a better round to save their lives. So why not carry it. The 21 is big. But it shoots very accurately. It has good capacity. Be inconvenienced by its size and be better protected. Adjust your clothing. Women, wear baggy clothes plain and simple. Men same thing wear clothing that allows quick unobstructed access to drawing the firearm efficiently and quickly but smoothly. Remember smooth is quick. Shoot , shoot, and shoot some more at practice. I am presently carrying Hornady Critical defense 185 Gr. with 410 Ft /Lbs. My only consolation to everyone is if the grip is too big for your hand then I understand your reluctance with the G21, as trigger pushing due to reaching with the trigger finger is not the most accurate method of firing and for that reason I understand. Now to throw a monkey wrench in all of this. I have a G27 that I am having modified at the Glock performance center. This G27 will be toting a 4" barrel Model G23 barrel, a 15 round mag ( model G22 mags with mag X grip for full gripability and control over the firearm) so 15 + 1 ( 16 rounds) and will be shooting either the Underwood 155 XTP @1300 fps rated at 582 Ft/lbs. (which I get 1260fps out of 4" and a kinetic energy of 530 ft /lbs.) or the Underwood extreme defender round. How can I ignore the additional rounds the smaller lighter carry and the additional ft/lbs of energy. I was considering a 357 sig but shootability is a concern and I already haver a 40 S& W g 27 so I will go with this firearm as potential replacement for the G21 as my EDC. I will have to see if I can shoot the 40 S & W as well as my G21. It will take much practice to get ready to let the G27 take over as my everyday carry as I am so tuned into my g21. I will keep the same triggers on both guns. Combat ready 4.5 lb trigger, NY1 trigger housing trigger, 6lb striker spring with a titanium striker and trigger safety plunger. There is pretravel , ( this makes no difference) firm wall a good thing in a shooting situation ( less likely of an AD) , and a quick and strong reset which is the most important aspect in my opinion, to accurately engage multiple targets quickly. I wish everyone good luck out there in their selection of an EDC. Dont take it lightly, make an informed decision considering your EDC, your abilities, hand size and willingness to practice, and willingness to wear baggy clothes.
.40 caliber hands down Same size gun in most firearms as a 9mm but shoots a bigger bullet...all guns recoil...so you won't notice it anymore than you would a 9mil (in a defensive situation)
I carry a choice of 2 38's, 357 Mag, and mostly full sized 1911 45's and 10mm. I agree with many it is practice and shot placement. Practice getting it up, getting it out, getting it off.
Currently wife and I are EDCing a G26 or 43, both with +3 mags, for her....a G19 for me, with a .45ACP Glock 30SF is soon to join the family as my other carry option, to include G21 13 round mag(s). Has negligible recoil from my 19, with no real difference or difficulty in felt recoil (shot 50 rounds through a friend's .45), extremely accurate on or off-handed, one-handed, you name it......much to my surprise. But, firing off (likely) two quick 9mm hollowpoints will work just fine.
Those who tell you 9mm is best are trying to disarm you. 40SW is bigger and faster bullet and nothing has changed that fact. Advances in bullet technology extend to ALL calibers.
Yup and when people bring up the newest FBI study and how the FBI are going back to 9mm as proof that there is not much difference between calibers or that 9mm is the best they are ignoring the fact that the study states that 9mm is less effective but it is easier for their agents to shoot accurately. Personally I am a .45 guy that carries a 9mm because I already had the ammo when I got the firearm. I am not going to pretend that I carry 9mm because of a magical technology that nullifies the laws of physics and I am not going to say that .45ACP or LC is the best. I will say people need to carry what they prefer and can hit their target with.
Mike Babb exactly. I shoot 9mm at the range because its cheaper and 45 when I want to make big holes. For defense under 25 yards I prefer 40SW. I let the gun determine the caliber. I have a sweet Sig P226 in 9mm that’s fun to shoot at the range. I have a Dan Wesson Valor 1911 so that had to be 45acp. My Sig P229 and HK USP 40 compact were both designed around the 40SW so I don’t have the same recoil complaints you hear often from Glock owners. And I wanted a officer sized 1911 (crazy about 1911 triggers) so I broke the rules and went with 9mm. I love all my guns
@@dccurlybro I was honestly going to get a FNS 40C but my buddy needed a little money and sold me his Jimenez JA9 with some ammo while I was saving for the FN. I do not really trust the JA9 enough to shoot the + p ammo that he gave me so I ended up with the 9C. Sadly I do not actually own a 45 but I got used to shooting one when I lived with another buddy. If I did I would probably be carrying that.
Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but you absolutely speak the truth. Personally, I mostly carry .357 Sig or Mag, because I live in the mountains and it suits me better for EDC. But my next favorite caliber is .40, for the very reasons you said. I also have 2 HK Compact .40's, an HK Compact .357 Sig and a Sig 229 .357 Sig, so we share a common ground in our appreciation for quality handguns as well. And you gotta love the fact that the .357 Sig and .40 are pretty much interchangeable, with a simple barrel swap. Same gun, same mags, two barrels = dual caliber handgun capability.

All this talk about shot placement make me laugh. In an actual gun fight there is no way you opponent gonna stand in the same area. Your adrenaline will make you shoot wild same as your opponent. Do your shot placement in your paper target.
I totally get the shot placement thing however, 40/45 will drag more tissue than 9mm. 40 does better against barriers such as bone and windshield glass while 9 mm had to rise to the occasion. I EDC a G35 and with it's 5 inch barrel a 165gr bullet is just as good as a 45acp with 16rds vs 8-9rds of 45acp same size gun but lighter. I am by no means bashing the 45 I'm just making a comparison. I would not feel inadequate with a 9 mm either
I like .45, for the power, and that it won’t penetrate as far as 9mm. As we know, smaller faster rounds penetrate more. So after some tests I saw the .45 won’t go through as many walls as the other usual rounds. And you shouldn’t need 15 rounds. Too many people hit by stray bullets from gang fights cuz of the empty the clip way they shoot. I just transfer that thought process to my caliber. I realize that a heart shot regardless of size will kill the intruder. But a .45 is least likely to penetrate the body and the walls beyond, therefore making it the safer round. So in a nutshell. For power and the safety of others I choose .45
Well the problem with 380 is the tiny guns that usually use it. Makes it harder to control, harder to shoot. In a same size gun, it's fine I'd say, but then it's just an under powered 9mm round, so why not just just 9mm at that point. I can see a case for 380 with some individuals though, just not for a fully functional grown man of average or better size and strength. edit: still liked your comment though; funny.
I usually carry 9 also, thanks to the shield. Pocket gun is a 38 +P S&W with no hammer and no failing. ... but the shield is better! Ended up with a walther ppk/s, fun to shoot, very controllable, but not optimal at all. At least it's relatively heavy, and it's very controllable.
I lived in Wyoming for few years and carried a sig 320 compact. Due to being relocated to florida, my carry gun is a sig 238. I'm a thinner guy and due to the wardrobe switch, I needed a gun to conceal real easily. I always carry 2 mags.

But when you go to the gun store, unless you want a Glock, they are always on backorder. Plus, when there was a run on ammo, there was usually some 10mm when the shelves were bare.

Governor is the ultimate for car jacker with the right Ammo and the ten has the ability to reach out as far as you would need to in 99 percent of anything i would expect and has the penetration to go through car doors and glass reliably without the same over penetration with standard rifle Ammo. I do run close quarters rounds from Lehigh defense for the 300 and that stuff is awesome

Yes. Shot placement is key, but you don’t always get the chance to have great shot placement.
I agree with their assessment about the 9mm, however; I do carry a Sig P238 (380) rather than the 9. And yes, their assessment of female priorities in carrying are also fairly accurate. I chose the 380 because it is easier to conceal under my clothes. Also, I have extremely small hands. I have yet to find a 9 that I can shoot comfortably. I know sub-compact 9s are much smaller than they used to be, but for the most part they are just too large for me. Plus, it is difficult enough for women to carry without imprinting, even a small difference in size or bulk can turn a subtle imprint into blatant very quickly. Luckily, the market has finally caught on to the need for holsters that work with women's clothing and bodies; so there are new innovations in concealed carry options for us.
I prefer the 380 for the weight and the fact it's fail rate is close enough to a 9mm in terms of stopping an attack that it's a minimal thought. A few good hits with a 380 will definitely stun your target the same as a 38spl.
Exactly the size of the gun doesn’t always make it harder for you to shoot the only way you can know that personally is from experience when you’re choosing a gun for you.
I think the Ruger LCP Max is a game changer in the 380 world. I carry it with 12+1 rounds of Inceptor ARX. That's a lot of firepower. Having said that that, I will carry my Glock 43x MOS or Canik TP9 Elite SC every time if what I'm wearing supports it. When I do that, my LCP Max is my backup gun. I have a Clip Draw and a true sheath for front pocket carry.
I'm a woman, 5' 7" 115 solid lbs. And although I in *no way* want to flaunt that I'm carrying, I am not obsessed with having "absolute conceal" at all times that I am. Reason being is that I'm not a fan of sub compact carry guns. I don't like the
.380 because I think the rounds are a bit anemic (for my preference).
I carry different firearms depending on what I'm feeling on any given day. Most of them are 9mm though. I love both the 9mm and the .45 acp. I keep an AR-15 in my vehicle. I live in Colorado in the mountains and I'm rarely in a city however, you just never can know what kind of a situation you might all of a sudden find yourself in. Better to be prepared or even over prepared than left there to become a victim of whatever.
For home defense I like my 410 shotgun as well as my
45 acp.

The longer I carry the bigger the gun I feel like I can carry 😄 just carried my Glock 20 yesterday iwb with a light attached and a rds. Much bigger than my first carry gun, sig p238. Both are great, but the 10mm is said to rip a hole in space and time so it will probably be my main carry from now on 🧙🏿♂️

I have a titanium snub nose revolver with a ported barrel in .45 colt. Excellent for concealing. Not the best caliber for most, admittedly, but I go from urban areas to cougar and bear country, so its a 'one tool for many jobs' situation for me.

I have witnessed enough small caliber vs large caliber displays to know that shot placement is most important.
With all that said, to paraphrase an ex Navy officer friend, if I have to pull my side arm, I've made one critical mistake. The 2nd will not be failure to make big holes in the threat.

Robert Cherry when I was AD and had the pleasure our unit got to do bitch work for the seals on a raid. The guys told us you carry the biggest and nastiest round you can effectively carry. Never compromise carrying a smaller caliber if you can handle a larger caliber. Size does matter. Your goal he told us is to cause as much tearing and ripping of tissue, blood vessels as possible. Cause as large of a wound cavity as possible to cause as much as blood loss as possible. If you can destroy the heart and lungs is not always a for sure. Blood loss is and immediate failure of vitals stops them. Smaller calibers take more rounds and DO NOT cause as much of a wound as others. Never shoot a man with a small calibers.
He said if 44 magnum had more capacity and was as controllable as 9mm, 40sw, 45acp, they would carry that.

My EDC is my “9mm” (CZ P-10 or G43)! On occasion, I carry my G27 (.40 cal). When my wardrobe is more refined, my Sig P238 accompanies me. All are great shooters & I’m confident with each one, however, my 9mm’s are my choice of carry! Train often, stay alert!

I wear both at once. One round in the chamber, all magazines with one less than full capacity (less spring wear).
That's 1+6+6+6=19 on the .45 and 1+14+14+14=43 on the 9mm. This is my preferred carrying setup to protect myself as I go about my day around town. The shoulder harness is great because I can draw easily even in a seated position. The waistband serves as a back up and also a quick draw while standing.
.380 is not obsolete. I carry my .380 when I need to deep conceal and I just can't find a 9mm that is small enough to pocket conceal and not print. I carry my 9 about 90% of the time, but .380 has a valid role. Its better to have a .380 than no gun, and when I have to dress up, and can't wear a coat, ankle or pocket carry of my .380 meets my need.

The department that I work for uses Glock 22 handguns. I’ve been with them for 13 years and because of them I really fell in love with the .40 S&W caliber. I actually used my personal G22 as my every day conceal and carry up until 2019. A few days after Christmas 2018, I bought a Glock 45 and it immediately became my new every day conceal and carry. A few months later I bought a second one that is an MOS. And then I bought a Glock 19X, just because.
I 100% agree with how ammo has advanced in recent years. The ammo that I carry in every single handgun that I own is the Underwood Xtreme Defender ammo. And in +P when available in the calibers available. Google search 2016/2017 Joint Agency Ballistics Test For Handgun Self Defense Ammunition. It is I think a 52 page report? Around page 31 or 32 breaks down the Underwood Xtreme Defender ammo. The ammo out performs every hollow point ammo out there in every category and in every caliber the Xtreme Defender ammo is made in.

I'm looking at a Bersa or Walther. I like 380s
I carry a 1911 - when asked, I always recommend a tupperware gun in 9mm - take the 1k you save and spend it on ammo, then practice - a lot. Simply based on grip size/shape, Glock and I don't get along. I like Walther & Springfield - then S&W, although the I do like the Glock 43. I love Sig grips, but I haven't had good luck with the guns - fantastic customer service though.
But for me, nothing handles as well as a 1911 - I still don't recommend them, and if I were starting over I wouldn't go that route.
Favorite caliber - 9x23 Win - 10 rounds in a 1911 with .357 Mag ballistics. It makes me sad that it never got any market share.

Clearly if capacity is a concern 22 short is the best choice. You can fit a couple thousand loose rounds in the pocket of your running shorts.

Armando Cora changing between a multitude of different guns that function different like DA/SA to striker or DOA to SAO then manual safety to trigger dingus you are doing yourself a disservice. It makes it hard to build a muscle memory switching all the time for each day to the next. I have 3 pistols I carry a G17, G19, and G43 all same manual of arms, relatively similar trigger feel, same sight config, and similar light activation. I love all kinds of pistols but my carry is what I am betting my life on when I draw it I do not want to be remembering the manual of arms of said weapon in an adrenaline dump. You WILL make mistakes and minimizing the factors that can lead up to the mistake will be to your advantage. If you are not a Glock guy you could go the Sig route like the video advertised with a P320 full compact and sub then to round it out a P365 for small carry or Walter PPQ and PPS I am not a brand snob. Honestly I love CZ pistols I am a total pistol hipster as I have been called. The idea is consistency and repeatability. Invest in a shot timer go to the range and train on the first shot time from the holster and work on splits I bet it might surprise you the results. Then sprint 100m and repeat on a shot timer. If you disagree with me that is also ok maybe I planted a seed for you to at least think about it. Caliber I honestly do not care what you carry just make sure you carry. Be safe and keep shooting!

Lately, since I’m advancing in age and nostalgia is setting in I’m putting all my modern guns aside. I’ve started carrying my Browning Hi Power 9mm or Colt Diamondback .38 with a Browning BDA .380 backup. Done with collecting. Use em if you got em.
My philosophy is buy what you like and use what you've got.
I have always carried a 1911 .45 but that is because i just love the 1911, BUT i agree with you guys 100% that shot placement is far more important than caliber. so carry the gun that you shoot best.
Thank you for the PSA about .380's more prone to fail. I tried a number of .380 vendors with a number of different ammo variants and more often than not - ended up with an FTF. Although I really like the form factor for pocket carry - I just couldn't rationalize the risk.
My LCP Max has hundreds of rounds through many types of rounds without a single failure.
@TXLorenzo 380 fire storm is an actual South American cop gun. Not a knock off. In the states I have noticed certain folks intentionally dumbing down some hand guns. Using cheaper material. Means 10 rounds is 9 rds. Also not 13 from quality or so.
I have 3 carry guns (not all at once): S&W 380, SIG 938 9mm & a Kimber CDP II 45. It all depends on whether I’m pocket carrying or holster carrying. The 380 is the hardest to shoot, followed by the 9mm. The 45 is by far the easiest to shoot & the most accurate.
Every Day Carry (EDC): Glock 19 backup: Ruger LCP2 380
Bedside nightstand: Ruger SP101 357 Mag with flashlight (Have electronic ear protection nearby for immediate use).
Vehicle: I live in the suburbs but do not recommend leaving firearms in a vehicle. However, if you must have a firearm in the vehicle unattended ensure safe is mounted to trunk frame to prevent unauthorized access to your firearm. Whenever possible always train to promote safety and keep your firearm in a holster for easy access.
I'm a revolver guy when it comes to self defense. My 38 special is comfortable to wear, concealable, and definitely packs a good enough punch to stop an attacker
I'm a revolver guy as well. I legally conceal carry a 357 magnum J frame. I keep it loaded with 38 special and have a speedloader loaded with 357 magnum. When you consider where I live and how often I interact with strangers, I don't need but so many shots to get one or two attackers off of me. This is why I am able to preference the style and versatility of a J frame revolver over some boring square pistol with more rounds than I am gonna ever need to shoot at one time.
Also a fan of the 9mm. I'll take capacity over the tiny difference you get from a 45 any day of the week.
SolarReLaPsE I keep hearing capacity. Para makes a concealable 1911 double stack with 13+1. I’ve carried it for almost 20 years. If I use my shoulder harness I have two spare mags. Otherwise I just drop a mag into my pocket and have plenty of capacity.
Thats fair and all, but with a gen 5 Glock i can do 17+1 and 17 on reserve in another mag. Thats only 5 round less than youre 40 rounds between 3 mags, and thats if you're rocking a shoulder harness which isnt always optimal for people and can really inhibit reload time, which almost makes the extra 5 rounds obsolete. But thats from the perspective of someone who hasnt trained extensively with the shoulder holster. Dont want to seem like I'm knocking those who carry 45, cause Im not at all, just a preference thing for me.
SolarReLaPsE that’s reasonable. My point is it’s possible to carry enough .45 rounds. I always hear people say you only get 6 or 7 rounds in .45 and that’s just not the case. There have been many different .45 double stacks that have plenty of capacity. The reality is I have a 9mm that holds 15+1 and it is no better to carry than my Para Tac-Four. If I’m forced to make that choice I’ll take 13+1 .45 over the 15+1 9mm. Especially how they talked in this video. They say the choice is 6 .45 or 9 9mm. There are plenty of options in double stack. It would be nice if they address those. A double stack .45 is no harder to carry and conceal than a double stack 9mm. There will always be some difference in capacity but it’s not always as bad as I hear people say. And more over if capacity is the only thing that matters why not carry .22? You can easily carry twice as much .22 compared to 9mm.
It all depends on the ratio between carrying capacity and shock inducement. If somebody can figure out the ratio, we will have our pick.
If we stack 12 cartridges of 45 caliber against 16 cartridges of 9 mm and come to a conclusion on how much hydrostatic shock those create, we will have our pick.
Who knows, you might need 35 .9 mm bullets to 13 .45 caliber to even the balance, we simply don't know but the fact remains the same.
You need more 9mm to create an equal balance between 9 and .45 with respect to how many rounds you need to take someone down regardless. If we need 12 rounds or 15 rounds to take down anyone, we might as well start carrying shotguns lol.
For me capacity is everything. God forbid i ever get in a situation but id be freaking out my aim would be off. Just my .02 guys
The bullet is more important than the caliber. The new low weight for caliber high velocity low recoiling monolithic solids like a Lehigh defense Xtreme Defender in any caliber from 380 to 45 ACP. It's going to take time to be accepted by the masses but they set the new standard for personal defense.

I keep hearing that you only get 6 or 7 rounds with the .45. I have a para ordnance double stack. It gives me 13 + 1 rounds of .45. I have carried this gun regularly for almost 20 years. I may be the old man in this discussion but I would definitely prefer 13 rounds of .45 to 15 rounds of 9mm. That’s not to say I won’t carry a 9mm. I’ve got them but if I have the choice I’m taking my .45.
Thats when size becomes a factor. For example a .45 that holds 6-8rds is easily the same size, though usually bigger than a compact 9mm which holds 13-15rds. For example Glock 30 .45 10rd cap is the same size as a glock 19 with 15rds. A para ordinace double stack is more comparable to 9mm guns with 17-20 cap. Most people dont carry full size handguns on a daily. For me a 9mm is just all around more practical. But I love my .45s too. I personally carry the biggest I can, while its still be concealed.
When I worked in security, I carried a para 40-16, so I had about the same number of shots as the 9 guys with more power. And I never figured out why all of these muscular firearms instructors complain about how hard the 40 kicks, I never had any problem controlling it.
These gentlemen make very valid points. I would just like to point out that a handgun is the worst firearm to have in a gun battle. With that being said, accuracy and putting rounds on target in a gun battle is not a range exercise, so having the most ammo in the gun is definitely a plus. However I believe that everyone is glossing over "stopping power". With all things being equal, I want the round carrying the most foot pounds of energy, creating the largest hole, balanced with the amount of rounds being carried. This is why so many Police departments carry .40. I'm not advocating for .40, I'm only pointing out that the widespread use of the .40 was not an arbitrary decision. A Glock 27 is a fine concealed carry weapon .

Nah reason FBI went back was when weighing wound stats to rounds carried to agents ability to control the gun they went back to the 9mm. The fact is most LE don't make officers/agents train hard enough or long enough to become the absolute BEST at what ever they carry. G men(FBI=Gman) USED to carry a 4in barrel .38spl, with old souls who had Military training carrying GI1911. My grandfather shit trap with ex FBI from Late 30s to early 40s up till he hit mandatory retirement.
He was much like Clint Smith. You never saw it. He would compete and gun would magically appear and ever round was damn near a bulls eye every time. Man was menace on pistols and M1/M1A/M14/M16. But with shotgun on clay pigeon he struggled till grandpa worked about 6 hours and 5 cases of ammo and truck load of clay birds. They started at 9am, broke 12- 1:30 then on for another 3 hrs. My grandfather had to change up tactics to piss guy off, he pulled out his .410/.22lr over under and would repeatedly smack this guy down shooting clay pigeon with .22 shorts.
Guy finally ran three 100 strings with 95+ last one I slapped out a 99 and a chippy. But guy was happy.
Shoot what's comfortable, carry as much spare ammo as possible and practice drawing g from odd situation and position. Plan your defense in your head as you sit at stop light. When exiting car THINK as if your armed and under fire. How so you get gun into battery. Then get home, and practice.
What you shoot best is what works. If a Curve in 9mm is best suited for you, done. And remember Clint Smith's rule 3 is 2, 2 is 1 and 1 is none. Learn fast identifying any rifle/pistol. Get to where you go to gun shop, drop mag, rack/check slide, release safety. The better you are at adjusting to any weapon makes you less a target.
If you only practice with Ruger Blackhawk and your faced with picking up a S&W and can't figure out cylinder release to check it, your now an questionably armed gun nobody. BUT if your familiar with as many as possible your one step farther away from being a victim. My only carry gun, P 90 Ruger, just bought XDm 4.5 tactical, threaded barrel, fde, 13+1 I am familiar with it and as soon as a proper holster is procured I'm gonna carry that for a while. Current Ruger load out is 8+1 185 silvertip, 2/7rd 230 hard ball. XDm has one or two mag 230 federal alum case, and one is full of S & B 230 hardball. But I have 3 /13 Rd mags, add in in chamber and a 10 Rd mag that fits and I can carry full box of ammo!
Statistics wise, 380-45 are all equivalently effective at stopping a threat, so the choice in calibers has much more to do with personal preference. (link below)
The majority of instructors use Glock 9mm for EDC because they are (arguably) the most out-of-box reliable and they can carry more rounds than 40 or 45 while also being cheaper to shoot than all of the other calibers.
Because 9mm is more available, it also has more options for type of round, and round type plays a major role in effectiveness of stopping a threat. Typical FMJ range ammo has a tendency to over penetrate and waste energy beyond the target, while hollow point types of ammo expend their energy more quickly.
9mm hasn't made any special improvements that other calibers haven't, it's just more popular, so it gets a wider variety that other calibers don't.

Most of us will never use our gun defensively. Sure I’d shoot better with a semi auto full size but would never take it except to leave in the car.
I have the SW351pc 7 shot 22mag revolver and larger 8 shot 357mag SW327PC. 351 well, It’s the smallest lightest that I can fit in my pocket and be reliably accurate up to 25yrds under time pressure.
I still favor revolvers. No fear of misfires in my jeans, no jams, no safety.
I think you guys make the right argument in the wrong way. The thing with 9mm vs .45 is YES capacity matters, but I don't think it's because shot placement above all, in my opinion, it's better to go with 9mm than .45 for capacity, since pistol rounds typically shoot to slow to cause the kinetic damage faster rifle rounds cause, and most typically, a pistol round will have lethal effect by causing blood bearing organs to leak or causing major blood vessels to leak. With this in mind, the best pistol is the one that allows you to cause the bad guy the highest number of leaks in the shortest amount of time.
I agree, to many youtube commandos have this idea that if ever encountered with a threat its only going to take one round of their preferred caliber to cease it like Clint Eastwood in a western. It makes me laugh.

At the end of the day, which caliber you carry is irrelevant, that you carry is the most important aspect! If all you carry is a .32acp, but carry everyday, everywhere you go, you are better off than the guy with the bigger caliber that leaves it at home because it didn't fit with the outfit.
Personally I have more than one good carry gun. In calibers ranging from .32acp all the way to .44 magnum. And I carry what works based on what I'm wearing and where I'm going to! If I'm hiking in bear country .44 magnum. In a tux to a black tie affair, I usually carry my PPK in .32acp! But I'm always carrying something. And I keep a rifle in my vehicle, for those times when more firepower is needed.
I carry CZ P10C. But I will say as far as .380 goes. My Bersa thunders are Rock solid choices for carry. Maybe I got lucky with mine, but they are, so far, super easy to shoot, and extremely reliable.
I was a .45 guy for a really long time and a friend of mine got me shooting 9mm more. Now I don't have a .45 anymore and I carry a 9mm (P365). My wife carried a .380 until she took part in one of my defensive pistol classes and the thing had failures on every other magazine even with multiple shooters. She bought her P365 the next day after running mine the rest of the class.
In 9 mil we trust 😂😂😂

The same technology that improved the 9mm has also improved the 40 and 45. Some of the newer 45 hollow points expand to nearly 1” diameter and pass all the FBI protocols.

I would say, weight, and follow up shots would play a factor. Shot placement and energy transferred also play a factor. The 9mm is faster, lighter, has very high pressure and can transfer a massive amount of energy. The .45ACP is slower, heavier, and the amount of energy transferred isn't much higher than you might think. Follow up shots are generally slower in a concealed 45 vs concealed carry sized 9mm. The .45 does leave massive holes. I personally carry a Glock 43/19 most of the time but, on my nightstand lives a full sized Sig p227. Ill even carry a snubbed 38+P from time to time. It's all opinion and how you can effectively end a threat and defend yourself or loved ones. All calibres are better than a sharp stick

In that case I would go with the highest quality 9mm rounds I can find and drive home accuracy and shot placement like crazy. Of course the same outcome can be done with a good .45 round, but I've always liked a 124 grain all copper hollowpoint for the occasion. Plus the added benefit of a more manageable recoil for follow up shots never hurts. Either way, I'd rather not be on the receiving end of either caliber because getting shot is no bueno.
I agree with the "move to a free state" sentiment, but my advice would be whichever one you shoot the best and most accurate. Given equal capacity, I would take a .45 all day long over a 9mm, but I carry .357 Sig, so shooting .45 is easy. If you shoot a 9 better than a 45, carry the 9 and practice with the 45 until you shoot just as good. With all of that said, I've shot and carried everything and found .357 Sig to be the most potent round for EDC. I live in the mountains, so humans are not my only threat. I'm rockin 13 rounds of fire and fury with my EDC and multiple mag backups, so I think I'm good to go. And might I add, I also carry 9 mil pocket pistol so there's that .. lol

I would like to know if the terminal ballistics tests that say there is marginal difference between 9mm, .40 and .45 failed to account for the temporary wound channel (that induces shock) being massively larger in the .45/.40, and when the wound channel in the ballistic gelatin returned to "normal" all 3 calibers seemed marginally different. You know, it's like your butt when you're taking a big poo-- it doesn't stay open but that doesn't mean that loaf wasn't serious business.
Temporary wound channels in those calibers dont cause tearing. Rifle rounds temporary cavities do.
There are differences in every caliber, they are fan boys like everyone else. Yet remember all calibers are trying to meet the history and performances of 45 and 10mm.
Wound channel in general is slightly larger then 9mm, but only by about .33"

The stereotype is that 357 means revolver, but I personally think 6 shots isnt enough, and magazines are easier to reload with during an emergency than cylanders.

5.7x28mm FN is the best pistol calibre, period. Higher capacity, lower over penetration, higher armour penetration, higher velocity, similar stopping power with good ammo, lower recoil. Change my mind.

This is overkill of a subject. The average Joe on the street needs to focus on so many other things about concealed carry than caliber and number of rounds. Buy a gun. Someone who is highly trained in Jui-Jitsu knows they will win any hand to hand fight. They don't go around showing off their skills by starting fights but they damn sure will end them. Most gun owners that are highly trained in shooting have a preferred caliber but are proficient with many. They still hope they never have to use it against another human being.

with immense respect, while it doesn’t have stopping power... the 45ACP is MUCH better than the 9mm. the 45ACP’s Area does 40% more damage and has a 40% greater chance of scoring a critical hit.
the average expanded area (Federal HST 230gr - .85” = .57 sq-inches) is 40% greater than the average 9mm expanded area (Federal HST Micro - .72” = .40 sq-inches).... think about it... when you play a video game... and get the chance to pick up a weapon with 40% more damage and 40% increased critical hits, you swap for it because it helps you win. you can argue that repeated shots are quicker with a 9mm... but NOT 40% faster. and usually your first few shots are your best because of aim and surprise... and basically, two 45ACPs are worth almost three 9mms.
magazine capacity?! at 13+1 rounds (G21) or even 10+1 rounds (G30... same size as a G19) and using a smooth recoiling Glock... the 45ACP is a no brainer. especially in states like California where you have a 10+1 magazine restriction. confirm the math for yourself... 40% more damage and increased critical hits is a BIG deal.
the wound channel is dependent on Area x Length (adequate penetration FBI 12”-18”)... so having a 40% increase in Area gives a 40% larger volume wound channel and a 40% increase that the bullet will nick an artery or critical central nervous system component... that’s just a fact.
i’m an engineer and i did the area equations myself based on lucky gunner’s testing of the best expanding Federal HST ammunition... and i gave every benefit of the doubt to the 9mm... Area is based on “squaring” the radius x pie... so it increases exponentially... that’s why it is such a big difference. the 45ACP has a 40% greater Area... i put the math in my first comment... check it for yourself.
45ACP - .85” = .57 sq-inches
9mm - .72” = .40 sq-inches
.57/.40 = 1.425 = 142.5% = 142.5% or roughly ~40% greater for 45ACP
my math checks out. the FBI and law agencies decided to go with 9mm for a lot of reasons... including low round cost and capacity...
but for personal citizen CCW... the 45ACP is the better round... it just is... trust the math AND your intuition... it just is.

Brian Roberts thanks for the vote of confidence. i have my Glock 30 loaded with Fed HST... i know i’ve got an amazing tool and the rest is up to me. somewhere along the line the 9mm caught up to ball 45ACP... but nobody talks about the 45ACP catching up to the 12 gage slug in diameter (.85” vs .88”). it isn’t traveling as fast as the 12 gage... but the wound channel it cuts is nearly the same... and that’s incredibly impressive from a CCW that shoots 10+1 rounds. have a good night and stay safe! :)
I agree with these guys. The best carry gun is the one you can put on target the most effectively. I love my 9mm but my friend carries his .45 and is super comfortable with it. We have each found our best carry gun.
I want to see a FN FiveseveN subcompact. 15 rounds of SS190 5.7x28 in a subcompact would beat 9mm all day - and have less recoil and better penetration, too.
I moved from the Sig C3 1911 compact to the FN FiveSeven 3 years ago. 6 months ago, I purchased the new slimmed down version of the 20rd variety. It is just a tad bigger...and I mean a very small difference between the Sig 4inch and the new .57. With the alien gear ghost holster, it is literally invisible at my 4:30. Obviously I don't need to tell you that it has far superior accuracy to any other round (at pretty much any range) and it's stopping power is unmatched, but with the FN penetrators in my magazine, it pierces body armor as well. So if your willing to pay the high price (they run anywhere from 1300-1500 depending) I suggest you go ahead and follow through on you thought!

Is that the AP round? I know they did testing on the civilian rounds and it was shown to be as effective as 9mm ball. That a owner needs the AP rounds to be really effective

Im a Enlisted Navy Sailor and carry a Kimber Pro Carry II chambered in .45ACP off duty. I’ve always been taught to Carry what your comfortable with.
Carry whatever gets you hits; the stopping power of every round is zero when you miss. For a lot of people, a 9mm will be the right answer, but I wouldn't default to it without some analysis.
My first carry gun was a .38 Special. Nowadays I carry a .40 or a 9mm and sometimes a .380 in reserve.
If I were just going for deterrence/scare factor, open carrying my .44 Magnum should do the trick. And yes, I can hit with it.

I love that the 9mm guys always say "with modern rounds it's just as capable as the .45". It's almost like they don't realize you can get those same "modern rounds" in a larger caliber. There is absolutely no replacement for displacement. But having said that, my next weapon will be a 9mm simply because of higher capacity, and quicker follow up shots.

Colion nailed it.. 380 has become obsolete. The advantages used to be the selection of pocket pistols and the price of the round. Now not only is 9 mm cheaper than 380 where I live, but they are making 9 mm pistols so compact that there really is no reason to purchase a 380.

I am reading the comments below.. I carry a g21 .45 acp and have been for 25 years. This was a duty firearm I purchased from the department, when he department transitioned to another firearm .This firearm is sooo accurate. I shoot one hole (slow fire) at 10feet, so I know I can take a head shot if necessary within a room length. Also I can engage multiple targets quickly and accurately at 10 yards no problem. The G21 carries 13 + one in the chamber. 14 rounds of .45acp. I dont think I am giving anything up here at all.
I will say that most posts below say they carry a 9mm EDC and by my bedside I carry a .45acp. That tells me most think the .45 acp is going to be a better round to save their lives. So why not carry it. The 21 is big. But it shoots very accurately. It has good capacity. Be inconvenienced by its size and be better protected. Adjust your clothing. Women, wear baggy clothes plain and simple. Men same thing wear clothing that allows quick unobstructed access to drawing the firearm efficiently and quickly but smoothly. Remember smooth is quick. Shoot , shoot, and shoot some more at practice. I am presently carrying Hornady Critical defense 185 Gr. with 410 Ft /Lbs. My only consolation to everyone is if the grip is too big for your hand then I understand your reluctance with the G21, as trigger pushing due to reaching with the trigger finger is not the most accurate method of firing and for that reason I understand.
Now to throw a monkey wrench in all of this. I have a G27 that I am having modified at the Glock performance center. This G27 will be toting a 4" barrel Model G23 barrel, a 15 round mag ( model G22 mags with mag X grip for full gripability and control over the firearm) so 15 + 1 ( 16 rounds) and will be shooting either the Underwood 155 XTP @1300 fps rated at 582 Ft/lbs. (which I get 1260fps out of 4" and a kinetic energy of 530 ft /lbs.) or the Underwood extreme defender round. How can I ignore the additional rounds the smaller lighter carry and the additional ft/lbs of energy. I was considering a 357 sig but shootability is a concern and I already haver a 40 S& W g 27 so I will go with this firearm as potential replacement for the G21 as my EDC.
I will have to see if I can shoot the 40 S & W as well as my G21. It will take much practice to get ready to let the G27 take over as my everyday carry as I am so tuned into my g21. I will keep the same triggers on both guns. Combat ready 4.5 lb trigger, NY1 trigger housing trigger, 6lb striker spring with a titanium striker and trigger safety plunger. There is pretravel , ( this makes no difference) firm wall a good thing in a shooting situation ( less likely of an AD) , and a quick and strong reset which is the most important aspect in my opinion, to accurately engage multiple targets quickly.
I wish everyone good luck out there in their selection of an EDC. Dont take it lightly, make an informed decision considering your EDC, your abilities, hand size and willingness to practice, and willingness to wear baggy clothes.

Same size gun in most firearms as a 9mm but shoots a bigger bullet...all guns recoil...so you won't notice it anymore than you would a 9mil (in a defensive situation)

I carry a choice of 2 38's, 357 Mag, and mostly full sized 1911 45's and 10mm. I agree with many it is practice and shot placement. Practice getting it up, getting it out, getting it off.
Currently wife and I are EDCing a G26 or 43, both with +3 mags, for her....a G19 for me, with a .45ACP Glock 30SF is soon to join the family as my other carry option, to include G21 13 round mag(s).
Has negligible recoil from my 19, with no real difference or difficulty in felt recoil (shot 50 rounds through a friend's .45), extremely accurate on or off-handed, one-handed, you name it......much to my surprise.
But, firing off (likely) two quick 9mm hollowpoints will work just fine.
Those who tell you 9mm is best are trying to disarm you. 40SW is bigger and faster bullet and nothing has changed that fact. Advances in bullet technology extend to ALL calibers.
Yup and when people bring up the newest FBI study and how the FBI are going back to 9mm as proof that there is not much difference between calibers or that 9mm is the best they are ignoring the fact that the study states that 9mm is less effective but it is easier for their agents to shoot accurately. Personally I am a .45 guy that carries a 9mm because I already had the ammo when I got the firearm. I am not going to pretend that I carry 9mm because of a magical technology that nullifies the laws of physics and I am not going to say that .45ACP or LC is the best. I will say people need to carry what they prefer and can hit their target with.
Mike Babb exactly. I shoot 9mm at the range because its cheaper and 45 when I want to make big holes. For defense under 25 yards I prefer 40SW. I let the gun determine the caliber. I have a sweet Sig P226 in 9mm that’s fun to shoot at the range. I have a Dan Wesson Valor 1911 so that had to be 45acp. My Sig P229 and HK USP 40 compact were both designed around the 40SW so I don’t have the same recoil complaints you hear often from Glock owners. And I wanted a officer sized 1911 (crazy about 1911 triggers) so I broke the rules and went with 9mm. I love all my guns
@@dccurlybro I was honestly going to get a FNS 40C but my buddy needed a little money and sold me his Jimenez JA9 with some ammo while I was saving for the FN. I do not really trust the JA9 enough to shoot the + p ammo that he gave me so I ended up with the 9C. Sadly I do not actually own a 45 but I got used to shooting one when I lived with another buddy. If I did I would probably be carrying that.
Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but you absolutely speak the truth. Personally, I mostly carry .357 Sig or Mag, because I live in the mountains and it suits me better for EDC. But my next favorite caliber is .40, for the very reasons you said. I also have 2 HK Compact .40's, an HK Compact .357 Sig and a Sig 229 .357 Sig, so we share a common ground in our appreciation for quality handguns as well. And you gotta love the fact that the .357 Sig and .40 are pretty much interchangeable, with a simple barrel swap. Same gun, same mags, two barrels = dual caliber handgun capability.

All this talk about shot placement make me laugh. In an actual gun fight there is no way you opponent gonna stand in the same area. Your adrenaline will make you shoot wild same as your opponent. Do your shot placement in your paper target.
I totally get the shot placement thing however, 40/45 will drag more tissue than 9mm. 40 does better against barriers such as bone and windshield glass while 9 mm had to rise to the occasion. I EDC a G35 and with it's 5 inch barrel a 165gr bullet is just as good as a 45acp with 16rds vs 8-9rds of 45acp same size gun but lighter. I am by no means bashing the 45 I'm just making a comparison. I would not feel inadequate with a 9 mm either
I like .45, for the power, and that it won’t penetrate as far as 9mm. As we know, smaller faster rounds penetrate more. So after some tests I saw the .45 won’t go through as many walls as the other usual rounds. And you shouldn’t need 15 rounds. Too many people hit by stray bullets from gang fights cuz of the empty the clip way they shoot. I just transfer that thought process to my caliber.
I realize that a heart shot regardless of size will kill the intruder. But a .45 is least likely to penetrate the body and the walls beyond, therefore making it the safer round.
So in a nutshell. For power and the safety of others I choose .45

Well the problem with 380 is the tiny guns that usually use it. Makes it harder to control, harder to shoot. In a same size gun, it's fine I'd say, but then it's just an under powered 9mm round, so why not just just 9mm at that point. I can see a case for 380 with some individuals though, just not for a fully functional grown man of average or better size and strength.

I usually carry 9 also, thanks to the shield. Pocket gun is a 38 +P S&W with no hammer and no failing. ... but the shield is better!
Ended up with a walther ppk/s, fun to shoot, very controllable, but not optimal at all. At least it's relatively heavy, and it's very controllable.
I lived in Wyoming for few years and carried a sig 320 compact. Due to being relocated to florida, my carry gun is a sig 238. I'm a thinner guy and due to the wardrobe switch, I needed a gun to conceal real easily. I always carry 2 mags.
