Scottish Gaelic song from Disney Pixar Brave film. Very nice lovely song :)
one of the main things about Irish and gaelic (or at least the forms I am familiar with after taking an intro class) is that an h after another letter often silences or changes that sound. Example: 'Tha' sounds like Ha and Bha sounds like va. But it is dependent on what letter it follows.
Laura McFarlane Well to be fair, in English a h after t or s or p or c makes a different sound than you'd expect :P
Sibh meaning the formal way of saying you is pronounced shiv, thu (pronounced as it's spelt) is the less formal way of saying you.
Wish this had been on the Brave soundtrack :(
This song gives me peace in my heart...
I have added links to several thorough and helpful guides on how to pronounce Scottish Gaelic in the description. I don't speak Gaelic myself, so I encourage you to do your own research rather than rely on me! :) Hope the links help.
Pronunciation has a lot to do with accent, too. How Scottish people emphasise the 'r' sound -as in we almost bite into the sound. Also the formation of core vowels like 'a' and the twang that has - almost turning it into a 'aw' or 'ae' sound. For example, if a gaelic phrase was put down in front of an Irish person and a Scottish person, it would be pronounced almost identically but the tonality of the phrase would be dramatically changed, thus changing the overall sound of the word. If that makes sense xD. You can even hear the difference on the simple word 'agus'.😊
Us Irish just spell words differently
+Charlotte McCann it would also sound different depending on where is the person is located in Scotland. the dialect and the scotch/irish differences mean alot
+Katara Grimes Absolutely! I'm from Caithness (Gallaibh as Gàidhlig) - NE Scotland -and come from a Gàidhlig speaking family and we speak differently to people in the Hebrides or in the North West. Regional slang or accents make a difference too and I'd imagine that would apply to Ireland also.☺️
it does effect, even in Ireland. but honestly, no matter where or how its spoken, its still a very beautiful language. Im scoth/irish but raised in America so ive been trying to learn the language
+Katara Grimes Which language are you trying to learn? Gaeilge or Gàidhlig?
I would have to go through all the words and research the pronunciation one syllable at a time. This process took me weeks for a very short song like "Noble Maiden Fair". Not only do I simply not have the time to do this for such a long song (I will be going to university full time shortly), I would probably get a lot of it wrong, since I do not speak Gaelic, a language with very complicated pronunciation rules. Sorry I can't be more help. :)
This is such an amazing and beautiful song, if I could I would listen to this kind of music all day everyday!
hannah johnson You can! Go onto iTunes. Julie Fowlis's albums are called "Mar a Tha Mo Chride" and "Gach Sgeul".
John Duff Thank you! :D
hannah johnson No problem! I'd also recommend Celtic Woman's albums, such as "Believe", "Songs from the Heart", "The Greatest Journey", and "A New Journey".
Can someone please tell me how would the title be in Irish Gaelic? Thx! :)
