  • A Mhaighdean Bhan Uasal (Noble Maiden Fair), from the movie 'Brave'. I have taken the liberty of correcting the lyrics I found online. I don't know much Gaelic, but I did some research, tidied up what I could of some spelling errors and added the correct accents on the letters.
    Rough pronunciation:
(based on my own Canadian English accent, which is almost identical to a 'typical' American accent)
    A naoidhean bhig
    Eh noy-yen veek,
    cluinn mo ghuth
clooin moe hooth (the singers draw ghuth out into two syllables, 'hoo-ooth', to fit the rhythm)
    Mise ri d' thaobh,
Mee-shuh ree, deh-heuv (for the vowel sound of thaobh, try saying "oo" while keeping your mouth stretched out as if you're saying "ah". It's not a hard sound to make, but there's no exact equivalent in English)
    o mhaighdean bhan
    Oh vai-ten vahn
    Ar rìbhinn òig
Arr ree-veen yoh-ik (the R is pronounced slightly rolled, the tongue tip briefly touches the roof of the mouth)
    Fàs as faic
    Fahs ahs faik
    Do thir, dìleas fhéin
    Doe heer, jee-les fane
    A ghrian a' s ghealaich
Eh hree-ann ah seh yell-aich (slightly rolled R)(the end consonant of ghelaich is like the end of Scottish 'loch')
    Stiùir sinn
    Shtoor sheen
    Gu uair are cliù
    Goo oo-air are clee-oo
    's ar glòire
    Sar glaw-ruh (slightly rolled R)
    Naoidhean bhig
    Noy-yen veek
    Ar rìbhinn òig
    Are ree-veen yoh-ik (slightly rolled R)
    Mhaighdean uasal bhan
    Vai-ten wah-sall vahn

I am a scottish girl and I am so glad I was able to pick this up and learn to sing it by heart. Its a shame that many schools dont teach our language and I have done my best to learn bits and pieces. I wish I was fluent in my country's native language.

+xWHITExEAGLEx True that, English has all these rules but breaks all of them frequently. It makes it so confusing , it needs to stick to its own grammar rules.

    • @andrewvanbeek1573
      @andrewvanbeek1573 7 років тому +21

Here are a couple of rules that will help you out a lot. Usually, any word where the second letter is H, the letter preceding it is silent unless the first letter is either B or M, in which case the first syllable sounds like a V.
Another letter combination to watch out for is GH. If a vowel follows it, the H is more emphasized and the G is almost but not quite silent, if a consonant follows it (such as L), the G is more emphasized.

I hope I'm not insulting anyone by writing this, but would it be fair to say the transliteration looks something like this?
    "É-nna-yann-vìhìc clay-mogü
    Mish-reetth-hey-bì vaijan va-han,
    Aree-vin-yög fas-às faikhth

Pixar never ceases to amaze me. The terms in Finding Nemo were actual Dentistry terms. The wood turner in the witches cabin is a well used wood working tool. But this song takes the cake.
It was made by Pixar in Gaelic.

The old Disney that produced the politically correct junks of the last 90s' and 00s' have no class. The modern Disney with Tangled and Frozen are world class. The Runes and Old Norse in Frozen are all historically correct.

I love this song and I applaud your work in researching the accents and spelling. I know Scots Gaelic and, just for future reference, you have "fhéin" with a stràc gheur (also known as a síneadh fada in Irish Gaelic) whereas it is supposed to be "fhèin" with a stràc throm (or grave accent). Irish Gaelic uses the fada (acute) for accents and emphasis, and Scots Gaelic uses the grave accent. Although, there are very very few instances where Scots Gaelic uses the acute accent, the word "fhèin" is not one of them. But thank you for looking into trying to get the spelling and accents correct! :)

It's funny to see your translation/ sounding of my country's Gaelic language. You're very good for someone who is not from Scotland. I must congratulate you on that because it is a very difficult language to learn and even pronounce especially if you aren't from celtic regions. I noticed you put a lot of "v"s when it's actually pronounced with a "b" or "m" especially in the last line. I am very please with this though and I hope you pursue learning Gaelic :) 's math a fhuaras tu!

Actually the movement of celts in NW Europe wasn't a movement of people, the culture moved. As DNA of the british isles hasn't really changed since 6000BC. That does make sense, but these languages common ancestor spilt up into what would be the major language groups of Europe to India, by 2500BC, so any simularities that there are between the two groups is going to be very small indeed.

well, gaelic in all its many forms is one of the many celtic language.the celts were an were a people indiginous to all but western europe until the migrated that way. but before they did, they existed mainly in the central part of europe.very close to the germanic tribes in many case and around the same time period. so some of the words in all the celt tounges may very well be slighty german in manner, early german.

When ever I watched the movie I kept hearing random words in the sfirst Ng,turns out it wasn't English XD but this is what it sounds like, don't be offended of something: fear not I am here, here with you,I'll hold your hand,I'll sing your song,I'll live in your heart, just have faith,I'm here, dream endlessly, you are my fellow, still so small,I'll hold you close,I love you, know that I will,live/be in your heart,we will be as one, know I am here,I'll stay with you,I wish for you in my arms,I'll live in your heart, just have faith, don't fear, dream endlessly,I am your fellow, still so small,I love you it's true,I love you, never be weak,I'll be in your heart, shine you are my sun.
This sounds weird and isn't what they are saying of course but it sounds like it and it's beautiful in its own way:)
