Great video... loved the consistent focus on bringing yourself in proper range with footwork. I like the way you explained what the pivot actually is and what it means... that it's the result of hip rotation and not the cause. I still teach beginners to turn that foot because they're usually too inept and uncoordinated to understand turning their hip... but I was inspired by this video to make something on this.
You’re absolutely right, Mike. It’s a training-wheel that’s often forgotten to be taken off.
🙏
Hi Mike.
Frazier and Tyson rotated their rear foot and Planted the front foot, rotating the front foot is an advanced counter hook, not meant for leprechauns or doo rag amateurs, try the Tyson hook, more power, more ko’s
@@danplasma Doo rag amateurs? A little subtle racism.
I get the same scent of autism from your naked shadow boxing videos as I do from Charlie Zelenoff. Any relation?
Disagree your knee turns in to allow your hips to rotate more freely the less friction the more speed. speed times mass equals force. The best analogy i could use would be throwing a kick in tight pants it takes away the power(unless you're Joe Rogan) now over exaggerating is deff not good but power doesn't only come from the hips your torso probably plays just as big as a roll in any punch i would say the muscles used in the hook that are the ones that generate the power would be the inner thigh muscles glutes and core the arm it self is like a whip imo
I was trained by LEE MOORE In homestead pa. Iam 65 yes old you teach old school boxing foot work defense concentration. IAM HONORED to see the sweet science taught the right way
Mr. Moore would come by a store I worked at in N. Braddock occasionally. He would take the time to share bits of the sweet science with me. Total respect to Mr. Moore.
So this IS old school footwork...thanks for sharing
"Focusing on hip rather than on foot while pivoting"
You're the og man, im bout' to unsubscribe all other boxing channels!
Dammm....
Everyone talks about the foot.
Mention the foot i think is use to explain to newbies, but i believe the reason for the foot pivot is to add drive and not stress the knee ( when you rotate the hip ) if the foot is planted when hip goes it stresses mcl acl but it does add a little drive from the foot being properly aligned. But i agree the focus should be hips
No kidding! on of the best coaches out rn for sure
@@tustudyis4life51 the point of the pivot is to allow your hip to keep turning, it increases your range of motion allowing more power. If you are just trying to get points or set up a different strike then its not really necessary. But if you are trying to actually do damage the foot pivot helps a ton. The pivot really doesnt need to be the focus like he said, but if you train the punch with correct form it really becomes automatic. Also, if you are doing footwork drills it really shouldnt put you off balance bc you should be sitting down into your strikes already.
"Beginner Mistake:
Deontay Wilder"
LMAO
Lol if he was Wilders coach then that man would have no issues in his boxing
@@allanmoe4444 Truth. If only Wilder understood that, and I believe he would get more KOs.
😁😂🤣
Deontay Wilder, the 1st and only person to win a world title, fight 44 times, win 42 of them in a row, 41 by KO with the exact same "BEGINNER MISTAKE". It took the best elite heavyweight boxer to dethrone him. Facts.
I knowww😂😂
So many people put the focus on the foot pivoting, focusing on the hip is a much more effective tip
the "foot pivot" is typically taught to get your hips into the punch. it develops terrible habits, still doesn't get the hips into the punch all the way and ruins all balance, footwork, combinations (try to land a hook combination on a double end bag repeatedly making full and clean contact) and defensive responsibility (you'll be off balance so you're an easy knockdown in the best case scenario and like setting up for a combo, defense is basically the same. even more so when you're slipping or rolling). many fighters finish with a hook to get back into their stance... not that i agree with this entirely as if you know someone is going to finish with a lazy/wild hook... a smart fighter will exploit it. but i digress. if your hook isn't returning you to your stance at all... you're likely doing something fundamentally wrong like pivoting that foot. aside from the right hand, i know very few reasons why your feet should leave the near 'L" shape heel to heel toe to toe alignment. the front or rear foot pivot will at the very least throw your stance off balance if not entirely cross your feet.
@@nb0616 also, I used to wonder when I first started why I could throw a cross hook so well, but not a hook cross, it’s because it’s so hard to turn over the cross (especially when moving forward) when your front foot is turned and you have to fight against the resistance caused by that. It’s much better to throw a hook cross if the front foot doesn’t turn sideways like a freakin blade. The same goes for a basic one+two while moving forward
@Nathan Albertelli thank you 😊
Hey coach could do a video like sparring or actual bout to show the true boxing form in play. Thanks
He can't. He'll be exposed. He is a bad coach. He is all theories and just a smooth talker.
If you have stamina and are a Hard Puncher than this will work
@@krioni86sa then why are you subscribed mate?
There is one on UA-cam
@@krioni86sa stfu lmao
Marvin is such a detailed instructor. He breaks things down to the specific position and body fundamentals. Love the fact that I first watch one of his videos around 10 or 12 years ago.
so basically 4 things:
1. don't load up
2. throw the left hook from your hip
3. while initiating your pivoting, focus on your hip movement, not on bringing your heel up (it will follow your hip anyways)
4. use your footwork to get into the right position to throw the left hook (don't reach)
I'm an amateur at best, but I was caught up in the foot rotation thing for sure and didn't realize it. Once I deployed this tactic I immediately was able to deliver more power to the bag. Awesome video, wish I would have found it sooner. Great job Marvin!!!
Brother you are way underrated. I can’t believe the mess and drama at Floyd’s gym got millions of views and yet this master class doesn’t. I’ve won my last three bouts and your videos have been a HUGE HELP.
This is honestly amazing... took private boxing lessons for almost a year with 3 different trainers. No one ever taught me any of this about the hook. Just a lot of yelling to hit the bag/mitts harder. Unreal. Thank you good sir.
Nate Robinson if you are reading this you are in the right place brother
I don’t think he found this channel in time...
@@juliansanderson839 😂
Great video! I think one of best visual sayings that I’ve heard referring to teaching not to “reach” while throwing the hook is that the hook “comes back to you.” I’ve seen a lot of street videos where wild hooks are thrown while also reaching out for the opponent who are too far away. This turns into your classic “haymaker.” I like the saying because it visualizes for me that path of the hook starting with hip generation and coming back towards my center rather than reaching out for the opponent out of range. I love your videos Marvin!
Holy smokes. This felt like a master class in the lead hook and yet he says it's just beginner's stuff. I'm really glad I found this channel and that you are publishing videos again from what seemed to be a very long hiatus according to some comments I've seen on other videos.
This man has single-handedly *transformed* how we look at boxing. He is to the "classroom" what Floyd was to the ring.
Floyd gleaned tricks from every top boxing coach, no competitive pro has ever said that Marvin transformed his knowledge, sorry
@@danplasma How *we* look at boxing.

@@rivermoore6179 yes it’s not the text but the subtext I have issue with, I refuse to call someone a thought leader if I know their thoughts are flawed,
@@danplasma I don't know, or have any interest in what a "thought leader" is. You sound bitter. Take you personal vendetta with Marvin some place else.
You’re a really good coach. You break things down and explain things superbly well. Thank you Marvin. 🙏🏻
Coach dropping wisdom again, so true about balance being affected if you focus too much on pivoting the ball of the foot, exactly what I used to do wrong!
Thank you for all the time you put into these videos.
I truly appreciate your time and patience.
Thank you.
I am so glad that you are making videos again. Your last videos from 8 years ago helped me so much.
Easily the best demonstration on the hook that I've seen and I've seen basically every one of them here on YT. This is great! Thanks coach!!
What a brilliant bit of coaching, great video!
Wow, new videos! Mr. Cook, I have to tell you, when I trained kickboxing regularly, your True Boxing Stance videos helped a ton! I was rewatching them almost every day before practice to make sure I've understand them well and to make it second nature. Balance and footwork is everything.
Excellent as always Marvin!! Makes complete sense. You SO da man!!
Excellent video! Very good at putting into words the true focus on the hips. Glad you're back
I love this so much. Thank you for your in depth explanations. Hands down the best boxing instructor on UA-cam
marvin is teaching and i am nodding with my head all the time. yes coach i understand :-)
I DOO THE SAME THING
Me too
your explanation on less focus on the pivot really helped me
Coach Marvin you have an ability to teach and that my friend is an art in itself. Keep up the good work and don’t ever stop teaching.
love how in depth you get! great teacher
This video helped me improve my body mechanics for my right cross as well. Best boxing teacher on youtube in my opinion, you really helping me get to the next level as I prepare to jump into amateur fights soon.
Wow, great video. I've been doing it as Mr. Cook's demonstrates but teaching it differently. My eyes have been opened. Thank you.
One of the best teachers I have ever seen
Love your video coach. You've got me out hear being approached by people in my gym asking me to teach them how to box. I immediately show you love and direct them to your youtube. Thank you brother
Marvin. That was excellent and useful. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Please don’t go away for 8 years we love your videos and you will get up there with the paydays soon keep it up 👍🏻
Great break down. Thanks marvin.
Man I absolutely LOVE your videos. A perfect example of footwork getting you into the perfect position is early Tyson days. He did a lot of slipping but his footwork is what got him out of danger and in position to land a clean powerful punch.
this is the video i've been looking for, marvin. i've known something was off with the way i was throwing it, and everything you've said here makes it make sense. appreciate the wisdom
Absolutely fantastic, really well explained and thorough. You are brilliant
Very useful video! thanks Marvin!
Great tutorial, so many details yet a simple technique. There are levels to this
Love this style of video. One of these for every punch would be the dream
I’m glad you’re posting.
Thank you for the lessons mr. Cook!
It makes so much sense when he talks about the hip making the foot move. Great tip.
wow.. that explanation of the power coming from waist and not focusing on turning the foot -- so much difference. thank you.
Thanks for the great video and excellent teaching!
Thanks Marvin! Great technique explanation
This was fantastic. Lots of technical detail.
Subscribed and notifications on, this was one of the best boxing instructionals ive seen from anyone
Great video. I am taking mental notes like crazy. I love how you teach. Thx man
Just discovered your videos I admire your technical breakdown and bringing back oldschool fundamentals
Very well explained coach! Keep up!
Instantly subscribed; this is precisely what I was looking for. Very well articulated 👌🏽
Best boxing coach on YT imo. As well as Fran Sands.
I subscribed years ago and he didn't have many subscribers then. Came back to find he quite rightfully now has the recognition he deserves.
As he says.... keep the weight off the front foot so it can move to generate the torque from the hips. With the punch being short and crisp.
First time I have ever seen it taught correctly.
Rear hook is a lot more difficult, as that is a wide, difficult punch. Same rule applies though....keep the weight off the back foot, torque through the hips and keep it as neat as possible.
Balanced all the way through. Especially useful if you miss!
Excellent exploration thank you
I will be using this tomorrow on the bag! Love these videos!
You help me a lot Marvin . Thank you so much !
Wow!!! Great coaching!!
The hip rotation is good advice, even for kickboxers. Lots of guys focus on the foot pivot and it leaves their leg very open for leg kicks. Liam harrison made a video on this as well.
ive learnt so much from you. Thank you for the quality videos
Helll yeah. Let’s go just made my day with u uploading!
This video is awesome!!!!!!!!!!! All your videos! I only found out about you yesterday! This is gold! For beginners like me and for anyone looking to improve. Thank you again!

Just perfect. just love your classes and style. All the best from São Paulo Capital, Brazil.
thank you MR.cook, Great as always
Solid value, much respect for this post
When he slightly went to the left and how his hips were positioned put the opponent directly into his centerline. Positioning your centerline is something most people dont speak about often. Another worthwhile video
This just reconfirmed everything ive learned this month styudying roy jones jrs hook compared to mine. I was doing all these little inconsistencies youve shown here and now it feels so much better
Man I need you to teach me in person! Everything you teach resonates so well I know exactly what you mean when you say don't focus on your feet when you are repositioning because that was my biggest problem not to mention not even thinking about focusing on the hips and having my feet naturally balance out do to weight distribution from THE HIPS. Your tips are gold brotha 💯
Great job. So true on the foot
Great lesson coach…I’ll be at the bag tomorrow putting it to use…thanks…
100% accurate ..every detail that is needed to know how to throw a hook....now that's proper coaching
totally agree with the pivot thing. Used for showing beginners what your body actually does when throwing, but eliminate it when starting to become novice to take away extra unneeded movement and imbalances. Great video!
We love you Marvin Cook and you know what's the Best part already knowing that you love us Too ! Thanks for everything
I've been struggling to find the right feel for the lead hook. Thank you sir for the great explanation. It's been very helpful.
Master Teacher, great job.
Lesson to learn good work great video!
Love it Marvin!!!
Nicely detailed explanation. I always felt clumsy doing it the other way
Hey coach. I’m a beginer and you seem like a really good coach. Well explained.
Thank you!
Great explanation.

Praise God. Smart dude and well explained. Love how he clearly elaborates on his intent from a risk management and impact maximisation perspective. Balance is truly key.
Your a legend Im 29 and trained alot of places but your videos have really helped me I feel 100% comfortable when I'm fighting NW thank u my g x
Thank you so much, that was awesome
Hey, thanks so much for the upload. Been having shoulder trouble as i throw the punch but with some technique it really helped. I was doing as you said and "concentrating on the foot", but using hip movement instead really helps so thanks again.
Love this video. I’ve been focusing way too much on my foot and kept getting unbalanced. Thanks for the clarification!
Love what you said about not focusing on the foot too much because you risk losing balance... I have definitely found it to be true, so glad to hear someone confirm it for me! I was told to "squish the bug" with my foot and I found myself focusing so hard on twisting my foot that I wasn't getting the power I wanted... once I stopped worrying about the foot so much I started to intutitvely generate that power from the hip turn and the foot wasn't even on my mind... Thank you Marvin!
I was doing it too but practicing on my own. I noticed after watching this video that the pros aren't turning their foot on the left hook, I was taught to turn my foot on rear hand punches though so I'll keep my eyes open for that too.
I agree 100% with this. When I'm holding pads I see so many guys swinging their left hook, you can see it coming a mile away and it makes a nice slap but doesn't really have much force behind it.
Thanks for this coach cook...
