- Miyoko Schinner's famous vegan mozzarella recipe was far too good to pass up. I've been a big fan for a long time now and my curiosity got the best of me. I was so surprised when most of you said you hadn't heard the Miyoko's scandal that took place, I figured i'd fill you all in and let you come to your own conclusions.

Spilling the tea, impromptu song, amazing dress, successful vegan cheese, AND an Aria appearance?! I have died and gone to heaven 🪦
hehehehe
Idc we got a kitty at the end 🥺
Thanks for supporting Miyoko and her UA-cam channel. Women founders are consistently treated poorly and often forced out of their own companies. 💚🌱
If you really want to take this recipe to the next level Miyoko actually recommends fermenting the cashew/yogurt mixture overnight. It gives the mozz that tangy bite and is the go to version for me! I’ve been making it for years and it’s hands down the best! It’s super hands off and she has that recipe online 🙏🏻
I need to try that! I will say that I like the simplicity and quickness of this recipe but I think it'd be nice to try this other way as well to see the difference!
Do you ferment it in the fridge?
@@MerleONeal For sure! I still make the non fermented version all the time and it’s such a quick and simple process, it’s a staple for sure.
The fermented version is literally the same recipe but before adding the tapioca starch/flour you leave the cashew/yogurt mixture in a lightly covered container overnight outside of the fridge. Then you just prepare the agar gar and add the tapioca to the fermented mix and cook it exactly like you did in the video. It really takes this already amazing recipe up a notch 🙏🏻
Thanks for all the amazing vegan taste tests and recipes Merle, love what you do ❤️
@@nadialeeabu Overnight outside of the fridge in a loosely covered container, before adding the tapioca starch and agar agar
Miyoko is the best! I grew up with her daughter and would go to their house growing up and her mom always made delicious food 😊
Lucky :D
@@yugenhonja 😊🙏
What an absolute Queen move to make this video supporting Miyoko Schinner, I respect that Merle
Also: buy her cookbooks! She has one just for artisan cheeses that is amazing 🤩
I have her Vegan Meats cookbook and it’s amazing!
Ma'am, your bananas have fallen off your fancy banana stand.
not agaiiiiin!
😂
Miyoko's recipes from "Vegan Artisan Cheese" are what enabled me to give up cheese. I totally support her and I'm boycotting "Miyoko's". I'm so glad that she's owning her recipes by posting them on UA-cam. I have made her butter recipe for years (fantastic and easy). Thank you Merle for supporting her with this video. 👏
Merle, thank you so much for the shoutout! And good for you for trying some her recipes; you've inspired me to do the same 😊
Well. You earned a new subscriber ❤
I'm definitely going to try this😁 In South Africa, we don't have access to many vegan cheeses so homemade is the way to go! Thanks for the awesome content❤
you are so welcome! I think you'll love it!
Hilariously, I'd probably try making this vegan mozzarella before real mozzarella, cause this is so much easier, haha. Looks amazing!
you GOTTA try it!
I stopped buying miyokos. I stand with Miyoko Schinner 💛
Didn’t know about all that happening with Miyoko’s! I feel quite bad for Miyoko, hope she’ll find her justice soon
Folks need to remember that right now this is he said/she said. None of you should just automatically assume that Miyoko is in the right. We don't actually know her at all.
The zoom at 9:04 put me into literal tears. I was already like "Well, that's not a flattering angle.." then the ZOOM CAME 🤣 *wipes tears off face*
THE COMPANY IS LITERALLY NAMED AFTER HER. WHAT IS THIS!?!?!?
Same thing with bobbi brown
Yeah - unfortunately this is really common. When founders bring in new investors and board members, they give up some of their voting power and % of the company. Which, when you choose to do that, can lead to you getting pushed out. It’s a risk all entrepreneurs take when they choose to accelerate the growth of their business.
@@tylerkihm8131 That does not make it right. Nor does it excuse their hostile takeover or our acceptance as as society to justify it as okay. I for one choose to take the higher ground and NOT purchase their products. Which BTW They are changing while still using her name. She has a channel of her own with cookbooks online. I choose to support her, not them. And I tell EVERYONE I can that the should do the same. If we go along with it by purchasing their products after how they unethically acquired the business. Whether it's legal or not. This is how animal agriculture eventually became a conglomerate, which we as a society allowed and condoned because we continued and still continue to support products that exploit people as well as animals. Just my humble opinion based on watching the industries for over 60 years. Supporting businesses lie this are what ultimately creates what we see now in the animal agriculture industry, this is how it begins. Don't support it. Or we will see the same issues in the Vegan and Plant Based products in the years to come.
Because she's a chef, a creative, a visionary and an entrepreneur... and she continues to do that work, and has multiple projects outside of her cheese company.
Someone else has to run the business operations or it will close. Her cheese company will survive, she'll stay on the board, and now she has the freedom to invest in, and launch new companies in the vegan community. This is actually very common...
@@bodyofhope You're forgetting that she didn't CHOOSE to step down, though. You're framing it as something she wanted, when we know that that's not the case.
I’ve been following this story. I was shocked. I haven’t purchased any of the cheeses since. I love that funky pub cheese Roadhouse Cheddar spread. Specifically I dip Snack Factory pretzel thins in it. The liquid mozzarella pizza cheese was also surprisingly good.
yesss love the liquid mozz
I live near Guadalajara Mx and went to both Costcos. I was shocked to see boxes of Miyoko’s Butter for sale. While I can source most vegan items here, butter has not been good so I just started making my own. When I saw Miyoko’s I bought a few. I hope they keep stocking it. It’s delicious. I’m heading to her YT channel. Thanks for explaining what happened.
Loved this video and it's concept sooo much. :) Can't wait to see a similar video on yours and Buzzfeeds story!
I love how you cover the controversy, we need more ppl to understand how shitty this was and Miyoko is a pure genius!
Definitely making this and you look so lovely! ❤
Cool! I'm going to have to try it. I also recommend getting her cookbook and making the yogurt. It's so satisfying!
At long last: experimental cooking and a story! I’ve missed these kinds of “cooking sessions, combined with storytelling,” ever since you told us the story of Elizabeth Holmes; you really need to get back to doing this more often.
I've made this cheese soooo many times and it never disappoints, it tastes so much like the real mozzarella!!! Loved the video❤
Yes!! I was going to comment in one or your past ranking videos that I would LOVE a yogurt ranking!!! Or cream cheese!!!
The scandal was everywhere. I don't know what to think because I love her products, but I hate that they removed her from her own company.
Heyyy Merle! I absolutely LOVE your videos!! I have a suggestion for you window/curtain problem - I think getting opaque blinds would be a great fix to cutting all the exposure coming from the sun, while maintaining the bright look. You can then match your camera setting to the window and then add you main (Key light), if you'd like a softer light on you, try getting a bigger soft box or adding more diffusion to your key. I hope this help! :)
Yes! Love a new podcast recommendation!!!!
This was the most beautiful video on my timeline, all because of the most prettiest lady Merleeee!💕💕💕
What an amazing singing voice you have, Merle! Plus, making up songs to narrate your life is just a fun and creative thing that awesome people do (I'm not biased). But I'll bet no one shrinks away in pain when _you_ do it. 😅
People, don't forget to buy copies of Miyoko's vegan cheese cookbooks to support her (and/or encourage your local library to get copies to loan).
3 things… 1)the cheese looks amazing and sounds yum! 2)your dress is stunning 3)I love the fact you make up songs in the kitchen about stuff like using a spoon… yeah, me too. I literally made up some random song today while I was doing the dishes about using the right scrubbing brush… it keeps me entertained I guess? But ‘use a spoon’ should definitely be one of the top hits on the made up kitchen songs list….
I've always been impressed by the Miyoko products. They've always been a little on the expensive side, but there was always room in the budget for at least the cream cheese, which my former roommate and I agreed was to be used sparingly. Now? Not so much. EVERYTHING is so expensive now and I have to drive to the other side of town if I want to buy a Miyoko product.
I'm all for boycotting the company. The NERVE to mistreat and kick out the woman whose knowledge started it all, the woman whose NAME is the entire brand, plus be shitty to other women in the board too?????? Big nope. Hard pass. I didn't know about this (I'm not from the US) or about her yt channel, but I just subbed to her. Thanks for talking about this, Merle.
You're welcome! I'm glad you're showing her some love
I love your shout out to totally forkable. She’s so awesome. As is miyoko. As are you ❤
I LOVE MOZZARELLA CHEESE!!! MMMMMMMMMM...... Love this video, and I did not know about the company's situation... Thanks Merle! 👍
Made this recipe on a spring break trip a few years ago and put it into a baked ziti. Best food of the week.
Delicious and informative! What a gal
hehehe
I love you for this ❤
Thanks for this! I will try this out for sure :)
very excited to watch this video!
I didn’t know about this either. I make a fermented vegan butter inspired by her recipe. Thank you for letting us know all of this, I will not be purchasing their products for Christmas (the only time I purchased them)
Where you put your money is what you support 🥴 I’ll be following her and making her recipes, but no longer buying Miyoko’s Creamery. I don’t feel right doing so. There are plenty of other vegan companies and if she ever comes out with new products, I will definitely one of the first to support her. She deserves the world.
I'm actually down with both of your recommendations
0:55 saucestache spilled the beans
True crime fan here…I am definitely checking out that podcast and trying this recipe! Thank u x
I'll be in line for her next company.
YAYAYAY excited for this one
It's an interesting move. Thank you for the interesting video, and the musical interlude.
hehehe anytime
I love miyoko schinner..she is an amazing woman... Bless her 💚💚🌱
I made this several years ago - gold standard as of now. GO MERLE GO! :)
I live in the UK and I've never seen Miyoko's here so whether I'd buy it or not isn't really relevant, but I would definitely try this recipe!
When a oompany becomes a corperation and sells their shares and another holder owns a majority of the shares it is very common for them to buy out the original founder. It doesn't have to be controversial or a firing as we know it in a standard job equation, it's just part of what often happens. That's the reality when you sell shares within your company: you risk being sold out especially if you aren't a majority shareholder.
This is why I would never take a company I founded public. Too many people get ousted from their own companies against their will.
For now, I removed Miyoko’s products from my upcoming grocery order on Instacart, and the one I have made to order for my mother, and I won’t be buying any more of their products until I dig more into this. I like Miyoko, I have her Vegan Meats cookbook and really love it, and until I see irrefutable proof that she’s guilty of what they claim, I have no reason to stop supporting her individually.
That looks so good! In my old days, my stomach is agreeing less and less with dairy, so I have been trying some vegan cheese options. But it's still a very nice market in Canada. :/
It's so good! And easy to make!
I will def try this
I don’t buy their products often because they are too expensive but when I do I buy the Smoked English Farmhouse, which I am OBESSED with, and sometimes the mozzarella for grilled cheese. This is the first I’m hearing about the controversy. Will have to think about that.
BTW I LOVED both Love on the Spectrum and Down For Love. The sweetest shows and people. ❤️
I'm just starting this video and I'm already mad. This company just brought the Merle Army into this drama. I don't know if that's a thing but it should be.
OMG Merle! That polka dot dress, it is so beautiful on you!! Ok, on to the cheese 😅
thank you so much
Not cheese related, but who makes your dress?? I love it 😍
❤ I love your videos! You've inspired my kids and I to attempt going vegan/vegetarian now!
omg! Thank you soo much!
I support Miyoko as well!! I LOVE her
(Haven’t seen the movie either, but) I now have ‘Let It Go’ stuck in my head, thanks for that hahaha.
heheheehe
I subbed to her channel. I had no idea this ezisted so ill follow
11:21 please whatever you do - don't see the movie. The highlight was the song and the music video and that's it. It's like all the budget went to 1 scene lol.
1:10 I still do. Not every corporate takeover's a bad thing. While it can hurt to be taken from a company you started, sometimes it's the most flattering thing anyone can do - by saying 'your company is so great - we'll take on all the work for you.' I'd be honored if I could start a company valuable enough for a corporate takeover! Besides - it frees her up to do what she wants to do in life - like make new products! She doesn't need to run a company. She can start another.
Merle you should share your shower and skincare routine 😭 your skin is glowing
Edit: more importantly please prioritize watching Frozen 😔
Edit 2: i was wondering if soaking the cashews first would get rid of the cashew aftertaste a little?
You should try the version with homemade rejuvelac (from quinoa or wheat berries), it's 1238971329827438 times better
in the tech industry, it's common for the founding CEO to step aside as the business grows. Few technical CEO are able to transition to a sales management role once the company grows beyond a certain point. That much is true, but it's important to ask "why does a business have to scale beyond a small/medium size?"
If you take VC money, chances are they will force the founders out.
YAAAAAAAAAAS NEW MERLE VIDEO
If you like true crime, you must try ROTTEN MANGO 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤ Love your content and you 💜💜💜
I had to try this recipe 🤣 Gossip/Tea/Drama? I'm in! And I made my own yogurt too. It's not the same the regular one, buuut it's very good! :D
It’s soooo good
Have you ever made Miyoko’s Oat Butter?
If not please do and make a video!!!
Thanks for sharing that news. I hadn’t heard about it.
You bet
12:35 The cut made me believe in it lol
Hi this looks awesome but in my country it's very hard to find plant-based yogurt, can I use plant-based milk instead?
Not weighing in on what anyone should or shouldn't do regarding the products/continuing to support the company. BUT -- as far Schinner's initial statement wishing her company well and not calling for a boycott goes, it's worth knowing that non-disparagement clauses are VERY common in agreements like these, and they often come with significant legal consequences if they are even slightly violated. So while Schinner's statement might be reflective of her feelings... it's also very possible that it's just something she had to put out to make the lawyers happy.
It’s almost fall. You should make her famous vegan turkey!
YES
Three months after the company filed a lawsuit against its founder and former CEO, both parties say they have resolved all disputes and withdrawn all legal claims.
In social media post published by both Miyoko Schinner and the company earlier today, both parties shared the following statement:
Miyoko’s Creamery and Miyoko Schinner are pleased that they have resolved all legal disputes between them and that they have withdrawn all legal claims made against each other.
Miyoko’s Creamery acknowledges the tremendous creativity, hard work, and integrity of its founder, Miyoko Schinner, a true pioneer in vegan creamery products, and appreciates her many contributions to the company over the years.
Miyoko Schinner appreciates the dedicated team of people at Miyoko’s Creamery and their commitment to continuing her legacy through sustained and continued excellence in manufacturing, developing and selling vegan creamery products.
Miyoko and the company wish each other well as they go their separate ways.
I’m absolutely cannot get down with kite hill yogurt 🤢 I just don’t like it. I wish I could still find Laava brand, it’s soooo good I eat it for dessert.
I find that there's just so many vegan brands out there where I love one company's sour cream but hate their cream cheese, or love another company's vegan cheese shreds but hate everything else they make. I always have Kite Hill, Tofutti, Wayfarer, Miyoko's, and two or three other brands in my fridge because it takes all of them for me to have a complete plant-based dairy lineup on hand.
Great video. Thanks. If you soak the cashews overnight and drain them, you will most likely lose the cashew taste you mentioned. Keep up the good work.
Even in a self loathing way 😂❤
Thanks so much for learning me a lot of about vegan food - I eat meat but try to cut down for our beautiful planet👍💙
You are so welcome!
Root of evil was haunting but so good!!
RIGHT!?
@@MerleONeal Definitely a masochistic listen though 😂
What blender do you use, Merle? I’m trying to find a good one that won’t break the bank.
The one I use is a vitamix but I'm also a fan of Ninjas! they tend to be more affordable!
@@MerleONeal Thank you so much, Merle! And thank you for responding! I really appreciate it. ❤
Hm? I knew she had parted ways with them and that there was shadiness on their side but I didn't know they'd been abusive to her. I've been still buying their butter because it's the best soy free butter (my lungs think soy means no breathing) and the liquid mozz cuz it's awesome. Guess I need to watch her butter making video and figure out the mozz for pizza deal. I don't feel comfortable supporting them now that I know more. Ick.
It would REALLY behoove a lot of you to not simply take Miyoko's words at face value merely because you like her story. It's never a good idea to assume someone is the victim merely because they say they are. So you STILL don't know if they were abusive to her - it's not a given fact just because she said so.
@@amypetty5013 As a general rule, I don't assume that victims are lying.
@@MorePranaGardens I don't assume that victims are lying either.
But that's my entire point - you have no reason to assume she IS a victim. You have literally just taken that to be a foregone conclusion. And that is exactly what I'm talking about. Victimhood is NOT established merely by someone declaring that they were victimized.
@@amypetty5013Harassment is so common in the corporate world and a lot of it is not reported. I'm sure there are witnesses of the harassment she went through.
@@mylene_b I don't give a rat's ass what you're sure about. The commonality of harassment does NOT constitute evidence of harassment for a specific individual situation. That's not how evidence works, and it sure as hell has no place in genuine effort to achieve actual justice. "I'm sure it happened because she said it did" is not one bit better than "It could not possibly have happened because he's such a great guy." YOUR mindset is EXACTLY the same process of motivated reasoning.
As soon as I heard they took her company away from her, I stopped buying from the company.
2:55 why not put a solar panel in the window? I know it's by a watery area, but that's what I did - and it's perfect!
Due to all the vegan cheese aftertaste (even Miyokos) and the prices - I don't buy vegan cheese. I just make my own. Recently I made Turnip Vegans "Smoked Anaheim Pepper vegan meltable cheese" and haven't looked back at store bought. ❤
If you have a PO Box I would personally love to send you a set of whisks 😂
They also just rolled out a complete rebranding for miyoko creamery! Timing seems sus to me 🤨. And it’s not an upgrade in branding IMO.
Merle, I would of added some Salt, to the Mixture, as Mozzarella, is slightly Salty. I, am definitely Buying her Books. Plus, I Watch her Channel. Yet I, never Purchased her Products due, to Cost.
OMG I love this outfit, this video, and vegan mozz!
Give it time the internet comes through
That dress is everything
She definitely was pushed out because there was no need for them to announce her parting she could say it herself they knew to say something before she realized it
Merle tell us about the boards on your fridge!! 😇
Is there a text full recipe including volumes of all ingredients?
Quick question. Has anyone tried adding the oil? I'd like to make one that can melt!
I've added refined coconut oil just for that mouthfeel texture, but doesn't make it melt--kappa carageenan instead of agar makes melty cheeses, but trickier. Pretty sure Miyoko has a video on that
Hi Merle and Merle's subscribers, could you please tell me what's the first true crime podcast mentioned and where I can find it?
It's called "Root Of Evil" and its on spotify
Thank you!!
Normally the ousting of owners from a public company happens gradually, but this is just pure greed... Don't be surprised if the Miyoko company ends up gettung sued for sneaking real dairy into the vegan cheeses.
We in the Netherlands are already boycotting Miyoko's Creamery, not by choice though :(.
