Love you guys!! I hope you enjoyed this one as much as I did...real talk though, drop your favorite mushroom (mine's between shiitake, psychedelic, and king trumpet)
Shiitake for flavor, but when I followed Wicked's recipe for the Lion's Mane mushroom steak that I grew from a kit, it was a one of a kind experience. A unique flavor, different from beef, but just as good. Growing mushrooms is fun and interesting. I recommend it.
I actually don't mind if you're not able to create your own take on it, making your own recipes is hard as! When you're busy sometimes its easier to follow along and then experiment on your own to fit your own tastes. Rooting for ya girl!
Merle, I love how you kept the part in it where you searched for some beet stuff, didn't find and failed to get any and then ended up with the hibiscus. I just love that kinda chaotic and authentic energy it gives. Please stay like that! In a world with so much "perfect" content, this is a blessing for the soul!
Right? You know what I think would be kind of fun? If Merle did a series of challenge recipes where she took random ingredients from her kitchen - say, she chose 5 random things from a list, or even had her audience vote on 5 random things - and built an original vegan recipe around it. Or something similar, just a kind of challenge similar to those cooking shows where contestants are forced to stretch their creativity muscles.
I personally really enjoy when you recreate other recipes. It gives a different perspective on the dish, and I can always trust you'll be honest about the final product
I would also love to see this! I have so many of Claire's videos saved, with the intention of 'yeah, I'll find a way to make that'. I know that baking is a little more finicky than cooking, but if anyone could do it, it's Our Girl Merle!
Hi Merle, Wow, this is great! You're a breath of fresh air. Thanks for trying this out. Really well done! Love Lions Mane Mushroom and what can be done with them. I very much enjoyed watching you put your spin on it and getting over the finish line. Great job! Love the doggos too. Happy to have you by the Wicked Kitchen to cook mushrooms sometime. London or Austin.
I like seeing people try other recipes, especially if it involves a more expensive or harder to get ingredient. I like hearing an honest unbiased opinion so I can decide for myself if it's worth the try or not
Hi Merle! So the best thing for separation anxiety is place training while you are home! You want to start by placing a dog bed close to where you will be a while like while you watch TV. You send her to the bed and let her stay in the bed, each time she stands up you just go an send her back. You want to start with shorter periods but then gradually elongate and get longer and longer periods, as soon as she is down and comfy you're gonna expand in distance and eventually move the bed to another room, essentially you expanding and building up on it until you can walk in and out of a room without her moving. It is a process but very rewarding, stress free for the dog and great in building their confidence of being relaxed by herseld❤
Lions mane are my favorite mushrooms! So pricey amd hard to find, I really want to grow them. Just sautéing them in olive oil, salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon taste like some sort of delicious meat and takes 2 minutes and no prep. They are also incredible for your brain health!
Please Merle always be this “Fly” and make these kind of videos where you just do it ( without practice) because this is why I watch your videos cus it feels like I AM RIGTH THERE WITH YOU👍😉 and thanks for learning us all a little bit of what vegan is👍😀
Ok. I attempted this three days ago and it was unreal. I didn't know what to expect but it was not merely ok and edible. It was legit one of the best things I've ever made. The flavor and texture were absolutely amazing. 100% will make again.
🐕❤️ One thing to help with (sadly not cure) separation anxiety in dogs is to a) make leaving no big deal--just go--but then coming back is a huge cuddle fest and b) leave for very short periods of time like 5-10 minutes to start and again, returning is all tummy rubs. Hope that helps. Great video as always!
I love when you do these videos. I feel like you represent the rest of us better than some of the people who originated these ideas. I've been stoked about an idea, watched a video of yours and promptly changed my mind because I feel like your opinion is real and unbiased. I very much appreciate you and your content.
Do whatever you're comfortable with. It's your channel. When I cook at home, I always use a recipe as a guide but feel out flavor vibes. I grew up around my parents cooking, and always being encouraging of my brother and I to learn. Hell, I've made modifications to some of my dad's recipes that he said were even better that the original dish he did. As for the lion's mane mushroom steak, I can totally see this in a vegan birria taco if it's seasoned right
Love the video! Random suggestion for the separation anxiety, my husband and I actually used to leave the tv on for our dog when he was a puppy (who was crate trained) to help him feel less alone. It also helped with my anxiety that our neighbors would complain about him barking or whining while we were gone.
Hi Merle! My dog (cane Corso mix) has separation anxiety, but his crate is his “safe space” (once we switched). We are at the point with him where he is only crated when he would be left home alone. We have the type of crate that is plastic and then just has a wire locking door so it is pretty dark and cave-like in there. The brand is Petmate Pet Porter. He originally had one of those wire crates and he broke out of it and trashed the kitchen 😅We give him a couple blankies, the bottom is lined/padded, and sometimes also one or two of his favorite toys, and he usually just sleeps in there. Making the switch to one with less visibility helped him at least! I don’t really get the logic because you would think one with less visibility would make them more anxious, but it actually I think made him feel even more secure. I am not sure if that helps at all.
I think the move is no marinade press (just salt maybe), until you get the right thickness and a little browning, then toss in a sauce/seasoning and finish in the oven. Youll get optimal texture first and can enhance however you like after, even grill since they will be flat and dense already
For the record, I love your viral tiktok food videos! Omg I cracked up at you realizing you didn’t buy beet juice 😂 thanks for your mid-video grocery store trips to make the video better, even if this last trip was pointless 😂 also so funny seeing the marinade almost never turn red as many times as you blended 💀 great video once again Merle, your videos are a breath of fresh air in my busy life 😊
Great video as always Merle! For separation anxiety, my dog's trainer told me to leave dirty clothing/clothing you worked out in on top of the crate or in it if your dog doesn't chew clothes. Your scent is stronger on things you've worn and it calms them down.
For separation anxiety something i do with my SDIT, when i occasionally leave him behind, is basically having something on in the background like doggy music or a virtual walk, they also have something called an anxiety jacket which basically helps your dog calm down because some dogs like hugs others not so much. Also if you have a wax warmer leave a calming scent for them like lavender or an old shirt that you don't wear anymore.
just came across this video and followed along!! Flip and press!! you did it! I freaking bought cast iron pan and NOW have ot go find lion's mane mushrooms do to this myself! Awesome job Merle!
You can train your new dog by leaving the house for five minutes a time, and always come back without making much fuss. Do this 3-5 times a day, and increase time and number of times slowly, always coming home to give your puppy a feeling of security, but never overexcitingly greet it when you come back, to not give it the feeling that you leaving the house is something special and dramatic. It might take some time, but it should eventually help. Also, you can take an old trouser, pyjama or shirt of yours, wear it for a day or two, and give it to your puppy (without washing it, of course!), to leave your scent to make it feel better.
@@MerleONeal You are welcome! I hope it works out fine and helps your puppy. I just happened to see an episode of Victoria Stillwell's "It's me or the dog" about a dog with separation anxiety, and she recommend one of these chewing toys that can be filled with treats, to help the doggos deal with being alone, by keeping them occupied and make them associate it with something positive. This might also be a very good support for training your puppy, especially if it is still in the biting/gnawing phase.
Merle, you should try some School Night Vegan meat recipes! I’ve tried the roast beef and chorizo from his new book and chicken from his blog, and they’re kinda mindblowing.
Every day I find more reasons to justify my fear of mushrooms, and whatever that thing was before you cooked it has probably been the scariest so far 😂😂
Cooks Unite 🙂 You're just adorable. I've watched Wickeds video on how to make this. Yet Im sooo gonna have to pick me up some lions mane and give this a try. Thank you for sharing (loved the video btw).
Love seeing your videos! l. I think there's so much snobbism in youtubers who cook and your charm is precisely that you are authentically humble. Abrazos!
Tip for separation anxiety: we actually found our golden retriever calmed down a lot when we didn’t crate him when we were gone. The only function a crate provides when you’re gone is to keep the doggy safe and stop them wrecking your house, but if your dog doesn’t exhibit these behaviours you could always try them out of the crate. The crate was super helpful for us with toilet training so I don’t regret buying one, but our dog is much more settled now he doesn’t have one and just has a bed. You can still limit which rooms your doggy goes in while you’re out too - we keep ours mostly in our living/dining room. But he’s pretty happy just snoozing or playing with his toys. He’s never chewed anything despite retrievers sometimes being known for doing so. Ultimately you need to do what works for your doggy :) every dog is slightly different with these things. You’re doing the right thing with the doggy cam, the kong, and building up separation gradually. You’ll get there :). Hopefully your neighbours are understanding x
I love our reigning vegan queen!! So good to have you back, I always look forward to your weekly video!! I personally would never try this just because I'm a bad vegetarian and don't like mushrooms lol but I'm still here for it!! Also, what are you doing with your life?? You're out of wine?? On a Saturday?? Gurl!! Always have back-up!! Haha. Much love 💖💖💖😊🥰 till the next one!! 🥳
My advice for separation anxiety with a dog is playing music or something if you’re able to. My dog used to have separation anxiety so we would put the radio on and that seemed to calm him down.
Some dogs do well being covered during kenneling. Use a thin blanket and leave one side (preferably a side that has no stimulus) uncovered so there's still fresh air. I worked in a kennel for years and we always did this for our anxious babies.
My younger dog had separation anxiety when he was left without the other dog (or in a different room) in a crate what worked was leaving him with the other dog in the crate, it got better but what really helped him was leaving him free started with 5 minutes and increased the time (i was lucky he’s a great dog and never did anything bad)
Re separation anxiety if still a problem then try this. Walk outside for a moment then come back in quickly. Do this over and over lengthening the time between leaving and returning/. Your dog will learn that you are not disappearing forever but are coming back. This is what the pros do
Wow, I usually zoom right past the commercials! But yes, so many foods look like the body part they are good for. I heavily recommend Imperial mushroom seasoning. Also, and it's hard to find, hickory powder, ground sage, and dehydrated onion into a cup and a half of the reserved marinade thrown over the top is amazing to finish it off!
another hack is to squish the moisture out of the lions mane by pre cooking it before marinating it then put it back on the stove after marinating. No need to put it in the oven
For lucille- you can give her something of yours that has your scent- t-shirt/ socks pillow so that she gets your scent. you will need to give her 'fresh' stuff every few days . hope it helps with her separation issues.
Absolutely make this. When it's finished (after a fairly long cooking time) there is nothing off-putting about the texture. Very meaty tasty and does not have a similar texture to button or portabella mushrooms.
Hey Merle, A fun video per usual😊👌🏼.Also, just a thought…. Would you be up for trying originally vegan recipes as well in addition to trying substitute recipes. Like a lot of South Indian recipes are vegan as is.
Do you have a neighbor you're friends with who can report back how long your pup cries after you leave? My neighbors were always super apologetic about their dog crying when they leave, but the little dude would stop literally the second their car turned the corner. He'd basically whine until he knew they were gone. My own dog got over her separation anxiety once I said fuck it and let her free range. I think it helped that she could make decisions about where to nap until I got home. Good luck. The first week I was back to work after adopting my dog, I went home at least 3 times a day to check on her.
I think we enjoy the relatability of you! Even though you're not a "pro vegan chef" you give us valuable insight as to whether its something WE normies could easily achieve (: also, if you have planned that you need to go somewhere ahead of time for a while try walking the puppo for a longg time before you leave. Mine seemingly got better when I did that, I think it just reassures that bond, relaxes you both and gets them ready for a nap while you go do your thing. She got better over time! Great video! didn't know you streamed on twitch!
Love the 360° turn after deciding to use hibiscus. Good to know I am not the only person who just makes random circles when trying to figure out what I’m looking for 😅
Seperation anxiety tips: Not an expert, so take with a grain of salt, but struggled a lot with this in the beginning too. My tip (if you're not scared they will chew it up) is to place a sweater or some item of clothing that smells like you with them when you leave. This (along with making a treasure hunt of treats around my apartment (didn't crate train)) helped a lot! Then, when she got good at being alone, I weaned her off of the clothes. (Used this to get her to sleep in her own bed as well). Again, not ideal, and maybe some dog experts have arguments against it idk, it worked for me. The thing that worked the best though was probably just time, and leaving at very small increments at a time. (Also trying to go back in when she was quiet, even if it was only for a second.) They are gonna get used to it when they learn that you always come back. Right now they're just young and incecure. You got this momma! It's super tough and tiring in the beginning, but it gets so much better, promise❤
for the separation anxiety, try really tiring your puppy out! go for a long jog, run or even walk until she’s tired and that can really help!! it’s just like humans where exercise really helps our mental health :)
Separation anxiety- lots of exercise and mental stimulation definitely make a difference. I just got the audiobook Be Right Back by Julie Naismith to see if that’s helpful, I’ve heard often that it’s really great. Good luck!
For separation anxiety, I would just train her with small increments of time. First 10 minutes then gradually (and I mean reallllllly gradual) increase the amount of time you leave her. Obviously there are gonna be times where you have to leave her for long periods of time before she's over it but over time, it'll come. You can also introduce her to some of your neighbors. Who knows, maybe one of them would be willing to dogsit or check in while you're not home. Last thing, and this helped tremendously with my dogs, we try not to make a big deal when we leave the house (we don't drag it out with long goodbyes, etc) or when we get home (we don't get them all riled up and excited when we leave the house).
If your still dealing with the separation anxiety, I have suggested to a few people to try leaving a tv on for them with something like animal planet. They have had great and immediate results.
When my dog had serious separation anxiety, it helped to put a blanket overtop of the crate and to leave a shirt (that smelled like me) to help calm him down.
My thing is that I love when you try it as the recipe says first, and them we almost always hear your feedbacks on what you would've done differently, and that's when I feel like it's time for you to experiment, not from the beginning. I imagine it can take anotger day or two, so I understand if it's more difficult, but even if we had less videos and they were longer and with that spin, I'd love that. But I get it if it's not possible 😕
You aren’t going to want to hear this but I have many years of experience with rescue dogs and the best thing for separation anxiety is another dog. They do SO much better when they have a buddy. I realize it’s not possible for everyone though!
I subscribed, not because I'm plant-based, but of your amazing humour, it's relentless and so good "it's going to be dark when I finish this" I can relate to everything you say and do, i'm sure its a condition, a good condition, but still I get you :)
Def needs yeast extract. Any brand should really do. Cenovis is my preferred but its basically native to Switzerland, if possible to get it id recommend it over the main brands like marmite and vegemite.
Have you tried putting the radio on while your gone for Lucille...for some pets just the noise of people helps. I know my cat Midnight suffers from anxiety and this seems to work for him. Hopefully it helps for Lucille too.
Hey Merle, you're my girl. Wow, great job. I seriously want to make this now. I'll definitely be searching my local farmers markets for this mushroom in the coming months with the hopes of making it. Btw, I agree with you in that this video has serious chaos cooking vibes. Also also, if only you went to the grocery store AFTER you had the mushroom steak - maybe then, and with your mushroom-aided superior cognitive ability, you would have remembered the beet juice.
I’m thinking that a good time to marinate would be after the mushroom’s spa in the oven. Now I just need to get to the Dallas Farmers’ Market, find the mushroom man and buy some lion’s mane. Silly of me to expect that the fifth largest city in the U.S. would have much vegan produce readily available. 🤷🏻♂️
Might be worth noting that at the 11:10 mark where you're shown spooning the marinade over the mushroom after it's soaked for 20 minutes - it really looks a lot like chicken there.
help with lucille and separation anxiety: when you come home dont acknowledge her immediately, youll need aria to do the same. dont talk in high pitched/rewarding tones, keep it really relaxed and like its not a big deal. some dogs will associate the big excited welcome their owners give them as a big 'YES' to them then barking and being excitable.
lol, when you first showed the Pom drink, I was so confused, thinking either I'd missed something in the video or you inadvertently cut out a bit saying that you were going to sub in pomegranate in place of beetroot. I promise you, Merle, that there are plenty of folks out here who can relate to that; to grabbing an item we THINK we know, or grabbing the wrong item, and not realizing it until it's already dumped in the recipe and there's no going back. All that aside, I'm happy to see you take a viral recipe and either try to duplicate it as per the original, OR to spin it your own way. But much more than that, I would love to watch you try to develop your own original vegan recipes. I love love LOVE recipes that try to reimagine meat-based classics or sub out the meat with something that hits close to the meaty original, but to be honest, I think the vegan world could do with a lot more attention devoted to developing NEW recipes (as opposed to showcasing existing classics) that are vegan from the jump. Which is basically my way of saying it would be awesome to see you do a series of videos where you take a new ingredient you haven't tried before, like this lion's mane mushroom, and develop a brand new dish around it. That is content I would watch religiously.
I personally think there’s really not a lot of actual originality left in recipes because most of it is already done.😀 We enjoy your take on recipes and your personality! Do your thing and don’t worry about pleasing the audience - we’ll be here.
Thanks for the giveaway! And thanks for your videos - I appreciate you making & trying out these different recipes for us! Baby Bellas are my usual go to, like a lot of varieties. I’ve been meaning to make “scallops” from king oyster mushrooms, any tips ? Or would Hearts of Palm be better?
Love you guys!! I hope you enjoyed this one as much as I did...real talk though, drop your favorite mushroom (mine's between shiitake, psychedelic, and king trumpet)
Oyster!
Fly agaric! They look so cool
Psychedelic eh? ;) 🌈
I thought I hated all mushrooms but recently I started liking shiitake after making homemade ramen.
Shiitake for flavor, but when I followed Wicked's recipe for the Lion's Mane mushroom steak that I grew from a kit, it was a one of a kind experience. A unique flavor, different from beef, but just as good.

Same, I like that it translates easily to how most of us would cook in the same situation - wrong ingredients n all
Agreed! I like that Merle tries recipes I don't have time to try. TY Merle!
Agreed! Do your take on it only if you feel like it
I agree

Ultimately you need to do what works for your doggy :) every dog is slightly different with these things. You’re doing the right thing with the doggy cam, the kong, and building up separation gradually. You’ll get there :). Hopefully your neighbours are understanding x
Thank you!!!
Next you need to make "Crab cakes" with the lion's mane mushroom. They are simply delicious. Everyone I have made them for loves them.
recipe adjustments on the fly is what inspires changes. Fusion cuisines happen all the time with a slip of the hand.
My advice for separation anxiety with a dog is playing music or something if you’re able to. My dog used to have separation anxiety so we would put the radio on and that seemed to calm him down.
Yay a new video I love your videos and it’s my birthday unfortunately I have stomach virus 😢
You should try marinating it after you initially fry it, then bake, fry, or grill it for a second time after it has marinated.
Love love love your videos keep it up it’s always something I look forward to seeing 👌
Amazing!!!!!!!! Can’t wait to try it ❤
For lucille- you can give her something of yours that has your scent- t-shirt/ socks pillow so that she gets your scent. you will need to give her 'fresh' stuff every few days . hope it helps with her separation issues.
Those mushrooms would terrify me so much with all the hairs, but the surface area you get to soak in the marinade must be insane!
i was sliiiiiightly disturbed
Absolutely make this. When it's finished (after a fairly long cooking time) there is nothing off-putting about the texture. Very meaty tasty and does not have a similar texture to button or portabella mushrooms.
Will never get tired of watching your videos. ❤❤❤
Trained in classical French then Italian but I cook for varied people, you inspire me
Hey Merle, A fun video per usual😊👌🏼.Also, just a thought….
Give your puppy your sleep shirt from the prior night. It will be comforting to have your scent near.
I LOVE Lion Mane mushrooms. The first time i had it i was mindblown how close the texture is to meat, and i love my meat.
it blew my MIND!
(Also trying to go back in when she was quiet, even if it was only for a second.)
They are gonna get used to it when they learn that you always come back. Right now they're just young and incecure.
You got this momma! It's super tough and tiring in the beginning, but it gets so much better, promise❤
for the separation anxiety, try really tiring your puppy out! go for a long jog, run or even walk until she’s tired and that can really help!! it’s just like humans where exercise really helps our mental health :)
thank you!!!!
@@MerleONeal you're welcome!! :)
bro ur review is so hype got me so convinced to try it your way
Separation anxiety- lots of exercise and mental stimulation definitely make a difference.
I wish I liked mushrooms and I'm trying so hard.... lmao... I just watched a tiktok of them making music and now I'm even more freaked out
When my dog had serious separation anxiety, it helped to put a blanket overtop of the crate and to leave a shirt (that smelled like me) to help calm him down.
thank you!
Wegmans FINALLY had these in stock. I cannot wait to try this! :)
You aren’t going to want to hear this but I have many years of experience with rescue dogs and the best thing for separation anxiety is another dog. They do SO much better when they have a buddy. I realize it’s not possible for everyone though!
You always make me smile Merle🌺🌷
I subscribed, not because I'm plant-based, but of your amazing humour, it's relentless and so good "it's going to be dark when I finish this" I can relate to everything you say and do, i'm sure its a condition, a good condition, but still I get you :)
Looks great I’m going to try this I love steak and brisket thank you ❤
The Hefty bags on top of the refrigerator made this extra real for me
THANK YOU!! Enjoyed this video!!
I'm so glad!!
The best Lion's Mane recipe I ever made is vegan crab cakes. The texture is more consistent to crab than any other meat.
Hopefully it helps for Lucille too.
thank you!!
Chaos Kitchen ftw
Hey Merle, you're my girl. Wow, great job. I seriously want to make this now. I'll definitely be searching my local farmers markets for this mushroom in the coming months with the hopes of making it. Btw, I agree with you in that this video has serious chaos cooking vibes. Also also, if only you went to the grocery store AFTER you had the mushroom steak - maybe then, and with your mushroom-aided superior cognitive ability, you would have remembered the beet juice.
DAMNNN you’re so right!!!! My brain is elevated now
We need aria's reaction
Hi Merle! I was wondering if, once the lion meat is prepared, I can freeze it for later cooking. What is your opinion about it?
This is awesome !!! I think I may have to get a kit to grow them here as I'm not sure how easy they are to find in a store but will give it a go :D
Imagine premaking these for a bbq and reheating them on the grill! It'd probably be so good 😍
YES
I’m thinking that a good time to marinate would be after the mushroom’s spa in the oven. Now I just need to get to the Dallas Farmers’ Market, find the mushroom man and buy some lion’s mane. Silly of me to expect that the fifth largest city in the U.S. would have much vegan produce readily available. 🤷🏻♂️
Looks tasty! I have to try this!. Thank you Miss Merle!
Might be worth noting that at the 11:10 mark where you're shown spooning the marinade over the mushroom after it's soaked for 20 minutes - it really looks a lot like chicken there.
That looks delicious. I wonder if not marinating, and using a burger press might help out with the texture?
that's a great call!
help with lucille and separation anxiety: when you come home dont acknowledge her immediately, youll need aria to do the same. dont talk in high pitched/rewarding tones, keep it really relaxed and like its not a big deal. some dogs will associate the big excited welcome their owners give them as a big 'YES' to them then barking and being excitable.
thank you so much!
Love this type of video from you❤!!
Was not expecting that😂that's awesome
lol, when you first showed the Pom drink, I was so confused, thinking either I'd missed something in the video or you inadvertently cut out a bit saying that you were going to sub in pomegranate in place of beetroot.
Wicked Kitchen is the best!
