Most vegan stores here (India) stock up only on Sheese. It’s really expensive, and it tastes terrible. I wouldn’t mind the cost if it tasted good. I really hope I’ll get Miyoko’s here someday!
Miyoko's is the vegan cheese GOAT. The fresh mozz is great on a homemade margarita pizza, the shreds are solid and the new bottled liquid mozz pizza cheese is next level fantabulous. The Violife ranking did hurt a little but I do find I prefer the sliced cheeses (gouda and provolone are my favorites) or the Mexican or cheddar jack style shreds over the mozz.

I mean I've watched a few of her videos and I appreciate her ranking system but I can pretty much tell when she is going to low rank something as soon as she opens the bag. I wish her descriptions of taste were...well more descriptive. All we get so far is sunscreen, toothpaste and animal food/treats as descriptors. There are so many more ways to describe taste and texture.

Here in France vegan cheese is very hard to find, Violife is the only decent option. I think a lot of people recommend it from Europe as it’s the best we can find !

I will say, the Follow Your Heart one reminds me of cotija cheese. And as a Mexican slowly moving to veganism, it makes me very happy! I use it in my burritos, tacos and plan to use it on my elote preparado. 😀 ill definitely be giving these higher ranked items a try though. Thanks Merle!
Nothing beats Miyoko's mozz, it's on another level. Quick recipe - - I grab a bowl and throw in some crushed garlic, sliced onions, sliced tomatoes, fresh basil, olive oil & balsamic vinegar - salt & red pepper flakes. I let it marinate for like 10 minutes, then slice up the mozz and lay it over seeded Italian bread, put on the marinated toppings, and oh my goodness, pure heaven!!!
This was sooooo hilarious! I love the pineapple aftertaste reaction. I am a HUGE fan of Chao. Never tried Parmela, So Delicious, or Follow Your Heart. I’m definitely NOT a fan of Violife or Daiya. I don’t know if they’ve changed their formula, but when I tried Daiya, I felt it was like a science experiment gone wrong! I love some of Miyoko’s flavours, but I haven’t tried the one in this video.
Merle, you are absolutely right on Violife! I LOVE their cheddar as well and use it all the time, but I draw the line at their mozzarella - as you said, something is weird with it. The smell bothers me, the taste is just funky and off. I want to love it, but just definitely can't!
Violife mozzarella is NOT the vibe! I agree with you. I bought a bag of the shredded mozz and I am not a fan at all. As you rightly said, the smell and taste is funky in a way that no mozz should be.
Dang, I'm pretty early! Just wanted to say that my sister and I have been mostly plant-based for a few years, but this channel has really inspired me to try to phase out the dairy and meat products I still use. I'd love to see you try to use soy curls in a recipe because they have so much more fiber than tofu, but I've been struggling to find really good recipes!
Merle, really liked this video. I’m so glad you tried the Mykonos, that is my favorite vegan cheese, it is so good, it is expensive, but for the fact that good vegan cheese is hard to come by i regularly buy. I do want to try chao, I hadn’t tried it yet. Great video
When I was trying to go lactose free, I ordered a pizza with that daiya cheese and it was so slimy. The taste was tolerable but the texture was hard to deal with. 😩 This was also years ago so maybe they adjusted it but ugh.
Field roast usually delivers on their products. I like them. Daiya brands is starter vegan food lol. When you don't know what to get, choose daiya. I feel the same as you regarding violife. The flavor is off putting. I can't find the miyokos anywhere but I'm hunting for it.
what's interesting too is that some melt well in the microwave but not so much in the oven. Also, some of the slices by brand are better than the shreds
i have a nut allergy so i can’t use a lot of these but my brother in law is vegan and during the holidays when i cook/bake i love using ur recommendations for dishes i make for him and other people who can eat them to enjoy!
Follow your heart has amazing dairy free dressings. My non vegan family even eats it. I've never had their mozzarella but they also have good parmesan shreds and blue cheese and feta crumbles.
Agreed! Follow Your Heart’s dressings are top tier! The feta crumbles are a STAPLE in my house! I’m Mexican & it reminds me so much of Queso Fresco. My BF & I love them so much!

I love Chao and Miyokos. I don't use them as a main topping but just getting a cheesy feel and taste. Yes I could eat the whole package. Melted or not. Yummy

Yeah is ok I'm with you with the Violife its the only one of those we get here in the UK. Not my favourite, totally get the pineapple thing. We have others over here and maybe i should give more of them a go but to be honest getting ones like that is why i rather stick with the creamy variety lol xox Great vid hun xox
OMG I agree about the Violife! I actually had to throw away a huge pan of eggplant rolatini I had made because the taste of the Violife I thought was really bad. I had also heard good things about it so I was surprised. Choai cheese is the BEST! You should try Trader Joe's vegan parm...the almond one is really good! They also have a cashew based mozzarella but I didn't try it. BTW you are amazing and always literally make me laugh out loud! 💜

Miyokos is definitely the best. I haven't had it raw, but now I might need to try it. And the Chao is soooo good for a quick snack as a microwave quesadilla.
Chao creamy original is best on a grilled cheese dipped in soup 😋😋 hot take - follow your heart Parmesan is the best all around cheese and AMAZING on pizza. So yummy.
OMG I love your video it helped me a lot because I've been really struggling with vegan cheese and honestly I do not have the budget to go out and try tons of different vegan cheese lol.
I love her so much. I respect her opinion the most became she keeps it real. When your trying something new it's get scaring you don't until try it. She doesn't sell it or swear by it she keeps it real. She makes us think for ourselves. Before we buy it try it for our selves. It's dose sucks I live in a small town it's hard to find some stuff when I get chance I am on it.
I didn't see this Instagram story for suggestions, and I know I'm a bit late, buuuut I really enjoy Nurishh mozzarella on top of pizza! Most of their other cheese alternatives don't do it for me, but the mozzarella is great.
I haven't tried Miyoko's mozzarella cheese but I love Miyoko's butter so much I figured out how to make it. The Forager brand of Vegan Mozzarella is super good melted and melts super good. Btw I'm not a vegan but if I find something good I will eat it or serve it to friends who are vegan. For me most vegan food is too processed so I don't often choose it over whole foods.
Violife is among my favorites but SOMETIMES it tastes completely different like it’s gone sour/bad. Sometimes it’s mellow and delicious. Very weird, it’s happened to me a handful of times.

I’d love to see you try British vegan food. I’m not a vegan but I picked up some vegan brownies from Mark’s and Spencer’s the other and they are so good, it would be interesting to see if there’s any differences between American vegan food and other countries 😊💞
The UK is actual heaven for vegan products. So many amazing options at Tesco and other stores - a lot more variety than in Canada (where I live) and likely also the US. I remember reading that the UK was the world leader of introducing new vegan products in 2021.
Vegan refrigerated cheese always has a popcorn butter aftertaste to me. But the box vegan Mac n cheese (the powder) taste like cheese. So I’m glad you tasted all of these options so I don’t have to anymore
I just tried the vegan mozzarella from Aldi and was hugely surprised!! I really tasted like real cheese (or what I remember it to be), even raw!! It melted ok on pizza but it wasn't an issue since it tasted so great.
I bought Violife mozzarella a few times but it always went bad in the fridge before I could use it up. Kind of an off flavor/smell when it started to go bad, resulting in mold.
I learned in your last video that i watched, you also live in LA and seems like you don't know about Follow Your Heart?? girl!!! it's a whole market and restaurant on sherman way in the valley!!!
Ngl, that Chao cheese reminds me of the time I bought shredded cheese from the dollar tree I used to live nearby when it first got its own refrigerated/frozen section. I intended to use it for a casserole but after half an hour in the oven, it was still fully intact. I looked at the bag and saw on the back it said "This product is not formulated to melt." which made me look back at it slowly with a look of disgust and think, '........... What in God's name *are* you?!'
I so thoroughly appreciate your ranking style. It makes it easy to really trust your opinion. It irks me when influencers wax poetic about how awful a product is and then only give it a C. Or worse, when they rave about something and then give it a B! So confusing and seems disingenuous. So thank you for rating so transparently!
I mainly use chao in my mac and cheese during the holidays so obviously I've never noticed how slow it melts but goddamn. It is the ONLY one where I will return to the fridge at 3am to eat it out of the bag lmao
I REALLY like the Chao in vegan mac n cheese and it does take a while to melt down in my instant pot. I would consider it more similar to provolone than mozzarella though. I used to really like Daiya melted (never raw, disgusting) but more recently found it makes me sick so can't eat it anymore. I switched to the So Delicious and enjoy it about the same. Of the ones I've been able to find and try, it seems we feel pretty similarly. Many of the ones you tried I can't find where I am.
I think it would be really helpful and mlre interesting to do the raw and melted cheese test at the same time and have the two ranking sheets next to each other because I couldn't remember where the raw cheese was ranked when doing the melted version. Lol
Miyokos Blocked mozzarella is seriously something even my non vegan bf loves i use for pasta topping, pizza, with crackers it’s to die if you can get your hands on it DO !!!
The only vegan cheese I've handled myself (so just excluding when I went out to a restaurant in California years ago) is Daiya, and I agree it feels so oily! When I get the package, I feel like the outside is oily before I even start working with the cheese lol Never thought to sniff my cheese or try it raw though! I'll have to do that next time I get some!
I watch these vids every time even tho the only brand available to me here is violife haha these are so fun to watch even tho I don't have an opinion on the cheeses!
Completely understand the violife ranking. I don’t like it either and to me it has the suntan lotion vibe that you gave the so delicious ice cream in your last video..support you 100% side note, I’m from Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada and violife and daiya are like the only two brands of vegan mozzarella you can find in our grocery store 😒
I also love Violife, but their shreds in general are not my favorite. They all have a very chemical after taste. They can be covered up with a lot of hot sauce or other strong ingredients, but I don't want to have to do that.

I eat chao shreds right out of the bag. It’s the ONLY good vegan cheese. It tastes the same as Kraft mozzarella (which was my favorite as a kid 😂)

Daiya has drastically improved both the taste and texture!! try it again when you can

Yeah is ok I'm with you with the Violife its the only one of those we get here in the UK. Not my favourite, totally get the pineapple thing. We have others over here and maybe i should give more of them a go but to be honest getting ones like that is why i rather stick with the creamy variety lol

OMG I agree about the Violife! I actually had to throw away a huge pan of eggplant rolatini I had made because the taste of the Violife I thought was really bad. I had also heard good things about it so I was surprised. Choai cheese is the BEST! You should try Trader Joe's vegan parm...the almond one is really good! They also have a cashew based mozzarella but I didn't try it. BTW you are amazing and always literally make me laugh out loud! 💜
Chao is made from Guerneville tofu, I run a vegan food truck and I use fermented tofu to make my smoked gouda cheeze sauce and blocks 😊

I love her so much. I respect her opinion the most became she keeps it real. When your trying something new it's get scaring you don't until try it. She doesn't sell it or swear by it she keeps it real. She makes us think for ourselves. Before we buy it try it for our selves. It's dose sucks I live in a small town it's hard to find some stuff when I get chance I am on it.

I didn't see this Instagram story for suggestions, and I know I'm a bit late, buuuut I really enjoy Nurishh mozzarella on top of pizza! Most of their other cheese alternatives don't do it for me, but the mozzarella is great.
I haven't tried Miyoko's mozzarella cheese but I love Miyoko's butter so much I figured out how to make it. The Forager brand of Vegan Mozzarella is super good melted and melts super good. Btw I'm not a vegan but if I find something good I will eat it or serve it to friends who are vegan. For me most vegan food is too processed so I don't often choose it over whole foods.
Violife is among my favorites but SOMETIMES it tastes completely different like it’s gone sour/bad. Sometimes it’s mellow and delicious. Very weird, it’s happened to me a handful of times.

The UK is actual heaven for vegan products. So many amazing options at Tesco and other stores - a lot more variety than in Canada (where I live) and likely also the US. I remember reading that the UK was the world leader of introducing new vegan products in 2021.

Vegan refrigerated cheese always has a popcorn butter aftertaste to me. But the box vegan Mac n cheese (the powder) taste like cheese. So I’m glad you tasted all of these options so I don’t have to anymore

I just tried the vegan mozzarella from Aldi and was hugely surprised!! I really tasted like real cheese (or what I remember it to be), even raw!! It melted ok on pizza but it wasn't an issue since it tasted so great.

I bought Violife mozzarella a few times but it always went bad in the fridge before I could use it up. Kind of an off flavor/smell when it started to go bad, resulting in mold.

Ngl, that Chao cheese reminds me of the time I bought shredded cheese from the dollar tree I used to live nearby when it first got its own refrigerated/frozen section. I intended to use it for a casserole but after half an hour in the oven, it was still fully intact. I looked at the bag and saw on the back it said "This product is not formulated to melt." which made me look back at it slowly with a look of disgust and think, '........... What in God's name *are* you?!'
I so thoroughly appreciate your ranking style. It makes it easy to really trust your opinion. It irks me when influencers wax poetic about how awful a product is and then only give it a C. I mainly use chao in my mac and cheese during the holidays so obviously I've never noticed how slow it melts but goddamn. It is the ONLY one where I will return to the fridge at 3am to eat it out of the bag lmao
I REALLY like the Chao in vegan mac n cheese and it does take a while to melt down in my instant pot. I would consider it more similar to provolone than mozzarella though. I used to really like Daiya melted (never raw, disgusting) but more recently found it makes me sick so can't eat it anymore. I switched to the So Delicious and enjoy it about the same. Of the ones I've been able to find and try, it seems we feel pretty similarly. Many of the ones you tried I can't find where I am.
I think it would be really helpful and mlre interesting to do the raw and melted cheese test at the same time and have the two ranking sheets next to each other because I couldn't remember where the raw cheese was ranked when doing the melted version. Lol

Not sure if you have this near you, but my favorite dairy-free mozzarella is the Lisanatti Almond Mozzarella. I get it at the Kroger QFC.
Lisanatti, unfortunately, isn't dairy-free. All of their cheeses contain casein.

The only vegan cheese I've handled myself (so just excluding when I went out to a restaurant in California years ago) is Daiya, and I agree it feels so oily! When I get the package, I feel like the outside is oily before I even start working with the cheese lol

I also love Violife, but their shreds in general are not my favorite. They all have a very chemical after taste. They can be covered up with a lot of hot sauce or other strong ingredients, but I don't want to have to do that.
