Thanks for this discussion of roofs. I live in Michigan and my 140 year old farm house has the same standing seam metal roof that my grandfather had installed about 1920. Throughout the years it was painted with a good rust resistant paint about every 15 years and it just keeps performing well-no holes and no leaks. So, some metal roofs do last 100 years 🙂
Seam metal roofs last 100 years easily if its maintained properly. Its the profile sheet metal roofs that wont get past 25-35 years
@@raimondainsar4519 why wont they last or are you just shooting from the hip
In my area all the old barns with metal roofing are still standing and the ones without metal roofing have all fell down over the years. Neither type were very maintained of the years.
that's awesome to hear! Keep that thing going. Good day buddy
Yep go metal same observation I came up with is metal seems better dunno about a hundred years but over the course of 43 is years it just seems like a better choice. The deduction of which older structures were in better shape over all. Answer structures with a metal roof. Now you can say it was because people didn't do XYZ and maybe there is a little of that in there but I just looked at three metrics 1. is it old 2. shingle roof 3. metal roof. After that little experience and many hours of driving and documenting every structure with a metal roof that was older was in better condition. So we got a metal roof maybe in your area that data varies depending on home style possibly and climate maybe? But if you go ahead and just look for these things you'll have a base idea. Some of these metal roofs looked a bit unprofessional but the structure was still good that was the other interesting thing of note.
Would love an honest video like this about windows!
We have windows made through Farm and Home out of Kansas City/DesMoines. We put the windows in 12 yrs ago and they are LIKE NEW still (except for the dirt I haven't cleaned out) . We just put in the same windows in the back of the house (1998 est) last Nov.
Our original roof lasted 20 years, but was replaced because of a final bad hail storm. Our shingles were 25 yr and actually lasted longer than most houses in neighborhood. Current roof is a 50 year shingle roof.
I've been roofing since '99, and can tell you for free, asphalt shingles suck. Go metal, or stone, you'll never have to worry about your roof. Quality means doing it right the first time, and never having to go back, ever.
Hi, can you suggest if we have good quality brands that I have to look for in metal roof like shingles or any metal will do
@@ravikumarkand1
There are many metal companies, but the one I trust to provide quality and consistency is Englert.
Hi. Just a quick question, I’m a pretty heavy guy and am unsure if it’s safe to go on my roof.
@@mauriciowalle
I would have to say that depends on your sense of balance, the pitch of the roof, and it's condition. A person's agility defines their abilty when they're 20' off the ground. Sturdy ladders, staging, and an anchored rope/harness should keep you safe(r).
@@beardedroofer I meant if it’s safe for the roof. If it could take my weight I’m 350lbs.
Ok, I need you to come to NY. I just bought my first house. It needs a roof, some waterproofing in the basement, wiring, kitchen needs updated, and garage needs a roof. Your work is amazing and I’m starting to not trust anyone to work on my house but you lol
Your house sounds like mine 😂😭😆
We did a metal roof about 9 years ago. A year after we had a hail storm with hail the size of tennis balls (no exaggeration) and the roof had to be replaced, looked like someone hit t with a ball peen hammer about every inch! Aug 2020 we had the Dericho, 120mph wind for over an hour. No roof damage, most shingle roofs in town lost 20-80% of the shingles! Metal all the way!!
Where do you live?
We had 180 miles an hour winds last fall. Our metal roofs, three buildings all survived. Live in Eastern Canada.
My greenhouse needed repair.
@dawnelder9046 holy moly. How did you 180mp winds in Canada? Juat curious. As someone who works in the Maritime industry, I'm somewhat familiar with those nor'easters up there. I've sailed in some 60-70kts winds off the coast of NF.
Hurricane sandy?
@@dawnelder9046 just saw you said last year.
Yes if Hail hits cars dents that metal in, and if it does it to cars, you know, it's gonna do it to metal roofs
You likely don’t think of it in Canada, but here in the southern part of the US, the heat load is important. Metal roofs will lower the heat load on your AC. I know some think that reflective sheeting inside will overcome this, but it is not as good as rejecting the solar load on the outside.
Plus they're stronger in hurricanes, often the only roof left on a hurricane beach are the metal roofs.
in canada noticed the heat reflection right away in some parts of canada we get real hot as anywhere
In Florida you don't need shingles use ice and water dam all the way up and cover the roof with solar panels.
@@portagepete1 We get too many tropical cyclones here. I would not dare put up solar panels. I think you actually get more in Florida. Good luck keeping them and your roof on.
Will a metal roof get really hot in the Florida summer heat?
Good information regarding the architectural shingles, however I was expecting an interview with someone who deals with metal roofing systems who would talk about the different types of metal roofs like the metal shingles or standing seams.

"no one wants to buy a house and have to do the roof"
Here I am I am buying a house, 3 weeks out from closing, and it needs a new roof LOL. THANKFULLY the seller agreed to fully replace it with only a $1000 drop on their closing credit to me. And what was quoted was $6000 for a 50 year non prorated manufacturer warranty for owens corning architectural. baseline durable line but still. I am so thrilled and it will be done before closing :3
Jeff, my man, I can not thank you profusely enough for all you do now that I've started house shopping in earnest. I've already skipped over several landmines either from a seller trying to attract a flipper or one that a flipper already did an immensely halfass job on trying to turn a huge profit. You will absolutely have me as a new member by the time I find a house worth my time and money. Respect!
We've had a house built in 1999 and pay the premium for the deluxe super shingles and when they got caught up in a defect and a class action lawsuit it was going to be $18000 replace our roof and the class action settlement paid us $800 that's right $800
Got a metal roof now and absolutely love it
I just had to do a roof on my house. Metal was a no brainer. I am in my 50's do not plan on ever moving again, the metal roof has a 40 year warranty on the paint coating. Telling me the metal will live way longer then that. It was installed by Amish here in Central PA so I have faith in the workmanship. I have even had neighbors come over and get business cards for the guy so they can get estimates.
I got my metal roof too. Every time you look into it, and it is saying, “you got the right decision, bro”!
@@tspev5511 Hello, we live just over the pa. Border in New Jersey. Did you use Wagler Steel for your metal roof? They are located in Lancaster area. We just got a quote from Erie roofing and our for 2900 square foot roof it is $50,000. This is not for the metal roof but the shingled roofing system. The metal roof was $82,000. Crazy prices.
@@shep2285 I used a small company named EB Roofing out of Loysville. I am in the middle of the state not sure they would travel that far east as they stay real busy around here. Some of the Greatest work ethics I have ever seen.
Metal roofs do a lot better in high wind or hail areas, worth the extra cost. South Louisiana just went through a cat 4 and cat 2 hurricane this past October. There are still tons of houses with blue tarps on them because we just didn't have the man power to change that many shingled roofs at one time. Majority of the people that had metal didn't have any damage at all, just something to think about.
Good video as I did my roof a few years ago. I went with the same product you did and the main reason I did not do a steel roof is because none of the steel roof companies were going to do a pull off of my shingles. All 4 companies I had quotes with tried telling everyone it was not necessary and it saves the environment LoL. I said no it saves them money and I want the inspection to make sure everything is in good shape. They all wanted extra money to pull the shingles off. I thought that was a poor way to do business and did not want to worry if I had issues a few years later due to missed rot under the shingles as my roof was 15 years old. I’ve seen all these steel roofs going up in my area and nobody is pulling the old roof off.
That is normal here as well. I don't think it is as much of an issue with a metal roof.
I'm in the same boat. I want metal but told no worries to leave on old shingles. On a budget, so tempted, but think I'll sleep better under OC Duration and dream of metal.
When they leave the shingles on does that mean they do not replace the plywood or underlayment already on the roof, but just lay on the metal?
I installed 30 year asphalt shingles on my roof 28 years ago. They still look good, have not shrunk so the gap is wider so they are doing well. To be fair the garage peak is running north to south so it only gets direct sun in the summer. I live in WI so in winter the sun as at a low angle. So there are asphalt shingles that can live up to their 30 year warranty in my situation.
I didn't know there were architectural shingles or I might have considerded them.
Sounds like you made the right choice!!!
I’m going out of this house feet first and it’s been over twenty years. Don’t blow my mind I was feeling relaxed about the steel roof
The reason mentioned in this video concerning metal roofs and snow avalanching on to the ground around my home and of course the dollar investment. I live in Wisconsin and our winter is much different the last few years but I am happy with the laminated shingle roof that we had installed.
How do you know if the shingle has been laminated?
It’s hard to explain but the laminated ones are thicker and give more of a dimensional look.
This really really depends on where you live, taking in ALL costs, not just how long it will last. For example, here in Florida a metal roof can save substantially on insurance, 25%, 30% even more in some situations. That savings alone makes up for the cost differential in 4 or 5 years in many situations.
And I am surprised there is no discussion of the energy cost differential.
Amen. Metal is WAY more durable in a storm, more energy efficient & like you mentioned, will get you a nice discount on your yearly insurance here on the Gulf Coast. For me, it's pay once, cry once. I'm going with metal.
Most people don't live in hurricane zones. These 50 year asphalt products are the way to go for most people.
I think asphalt shingles are pretty bad, and I wish they were much less popular. They can't be recycled, they leach oil into groundwater, they get soft in the heat and brittle in the cold, they shed granules into the gutters forever, and they look...okay. Metal really is the way to go, and if you want that shingle look, you can get metal "shingles". One huge advantage of metal is that it has far fewer seams, and if you go with standing seam, it's essentially one piece. I put snap-lock metal on my new shop and am glad I did. It's easy to install, (relatively) inexpensive, easy to repair, recyclable, and immune to most weather. And it makes a nice sound when rained on!
I did my first metal roof myself on my shop and I don't think I'd go back to shingles. Bought shingles, then changed my mind, returned them and ordered tin.
Couldn't have been easier to install.
Had an exposed fastener metal roof installed on my garage and it was marginally more expensive than shingles...but it'll last 50-100 years...still not as good as standing seam metal. But I'll never ever invest in asphalt shingles again. They're a poor investment long term and terrible for the environment.
Lol. $25-35k for a metal roof. Nope asphalt is 6-8k for the same size and looks better in my opinion. I can find lots of things to spend the savings on.
@@ROBMACDUI My roof, which is around 3400 square feet total, cost me about $9k. I did the installation myself. It's a very basic design, just two big sides on top of a building that's just a box. I didn't get quotes, but I imagine paying someone else to do it would have at least doubled the cost. As relatively easy as the install was (getting 84x 28 foot panels up there was the hardest part), I don't know why anyone with the skills would go with shingles instead of metal. Standing seam is significantly more expensive. It's better in some ways but I don't like that it can't be modified once it's installed.
@@ROBMACDUI like another roof in 15 years? Lol
Yet again, the most timely video ever. My new house has a 2 year old roof on it, but here in the great state of Texas you MIGHT get 5-7 years out of a roof before the hail damage is too much for it. I was already planning on re-roofing with metal in the next year or two just to get ahead of the game and because those tend to last much better down here, but its definitely nice to know I have other options!
Where in Texas do you live? We don’t get much hail here in Houston. We deal with hurricanes regularly though so 🤷♀️
@@allisonmiller3148 Right now I'm smack dab in the middle of DFW :) But the new place is about an hour northeast in Fannin County
No lie... I had a guy who was really worried about this. I went ahead and recommended a custom 1" PVC roof. I think this roof could last a few hundred years. Expensive but I don't see any problems ever.
Metal isn’t a problem if you install snow guards to stop the sliding. No foundation problems. This contractor is an asphalt installer.

ThxJeff .. it’s time besides tuck pointing , carpentry work and I’m 67 years young and still work full time. Make need to throttle back and work on my house . Hire a hand here and there .
Here in the UK and Europe we use clay or concrete tiles or slate.. It's the last thing we expect to do maintenance on apart from extreme storm damage. They should last at least a hundred years. Old houses that have Welsh slate roofs can last hundreds of years. We put shingles in our sheds and summer houses.
Heat is what kills roofs. My roof was shot. I applied White Roof Guard 700 backrolling it under the shingles, getting them to lay back down. About every 3 years I put another coat on. My attic used to be 145F in the summer. Now it gets 5 degrees above ambient temperature. This roof will last forever.
Heat = lack of proper ventilation but in many cases you have no economical recourse.
Good info. Just a note Minnesota codes ask for ice and watershield is supposed to cover the roof from 1 ft inside the inside of the wall out to the eave
i bought a house with a really old roof and made the seller pay for half of the new roof. was happy to do it because i loved the house. overall, it sucks paying for a roof but if you're gonna live there for 15-20 years, putting a new roof on in year one isn't so bad.
Unless you decide to sell right when it needs a new roof, then you have to do it twice 😂
@@ssgg23 well that was a unique situation because the seller was stuck on the market for 5 months and getting tired of it. I had all the leverage.
Shingles are good in the north but central and southern US metal roofs are only way to go. I switched to metal roof and added a 1.5” air gap with sharkskin underlayment with a radiant sheet facing air gap. My utility bills dropped 30-35%. And the price was about same as if I did shingles. Metal is cheap if you do it yourself, lot cheaper than shingles because it goes on so quick.
We use ether metal or tile roofing in Australia, lasts for 50 plus years
I’m from UK and roofs last longer than a lifetime, why is everything made to fail in the USA when you could easily make a roof last a lifetime, oh wait it’s all a complete con to keep economy going.
It's called planned obsolescence, garbage but is what it is, and this is Canada but, it's all the same across north America.
I beg to differ heat kills roof and proper installation techniques makes a world of difference ,The more ventilation you can create the better your "roof system" will last,
I live in a 120 year old farm house in Florida. It has the original steel roof. It’s oxidizing a little but it’s still got another 40 years easy if I keep taking care of it. Seeing as how the roof only cost about 4,000$USD our roofing systems are fantastic if done properly and cared for.
Because we live in a capitalist country, you see the roofer wearing a $70 Nike T-shirt that guy bought that shirt from a Store, the store hires a bunch of people that people go to McDonald's or buy houses, that people then hire the guy from Renovision, then the guy from Renovision can install a new roof...that's why our country is more powerful than yours and better looking, I have been in UK and it's depressing to see your 100 years old roof...
@@NikkiWalters653 I don't GAF
I’ve always overlayed and never had a problem. I inspect the deck from the attic. Easy enough. My roof is 20 years now and still looks good. I’m in south Florida.
Last summer I installed 40 owens corning Duration roofs, and 2 Bp Mystique (whats in the video) roofs, and the nails were placed correctly. No issues with the OC, but the BP roof (midseptember install) lost shingles to the wind. BP warranty was exceptionally good to deal with, I just wish they didn't blow off in the first place.
Ownes Corning are great shingles
I’m considering a metal roof. This video had good information, however, not much at all about metal roofing.
Metal roof will last longer as the Shingle companies are cheating with the quality of the shingles because they know that people live in their house 7 years in average. Warranty is lost for the new owners.
Buy it from locally manufactured company if you have one did a 2300 square foot house for under 4000 did it myself
That's the guy being interviewed sells shingles roof
Bought my house (new build) in 2001 in Toronto Ontario, removed and reshingled with asphalt shingles in 2013. Thinking that I’ll need to do it again in 2030, and I’m fine with that.
Same freeze/thaw cycle here as Ottawa.
I did the same in 2012. I think mine will last longer than 2030 here in Colorado, it's still in great shape. But extreme weather probably cuts into a roof's lifespan.
They both work and you can easily justify either option. It’s honestly personal preference.
Restoring a old farmhouse is a pain. I’ve replaced the original board and batten cedar with hardie board countrylane red almost the same as the original. That was tough now new roof with a combo. I have metal on the shed dormer 0/12 flat basically and architectural shingles on the rest. Replaced 8 sheets of plywood in the process. I’m glad it was kinda inline with what I see here. Thanks
They should make a textured metal roof that blends with hail dings so even if it gets hail damaged it wont look bad
I live in Upstate NY , have a garage with a metal roof that has been up 3 years and is now leaking , the winds in upstate NY have been insane so I think that may be an issue , the company that installed it is coming to look at it .
Funny, that you mentioned flat roof. With a flat roof it's not a question of if it will leak but when it will leak.
In the Midwest US most contractors will offer a 50 year non-prorated warranty. Certainteed, GAF, Malarkey, and Owens Corning do offer these warranties. This means from the time the roof is installed it is covered against manufacturer defect for 50 years. The important part is to make sure your contractor has the “extended warranty” included.
Apparently, I'm finding out, shingles only last as long as your insurance company says they do. Sight unseen, with no inspection, my insurance company says I have to replace my shingles on a 15 year old roof. Why? I guess 15 is the magic number, regardless of the current condition of the roof.
Well this was an add for shingled roofs.
I went with a metal standing seam roof. I have large white pine trees all around my house and the needles wouldn't blow off the asphalt shingles . The piles of needles also trapped leaves creating compost piles in the valleys. I live in Minnesota and every spring my roof is cleared by snow sliding off now. Metal roofs also handle wind storm better than shingles and hail if you use 24 ga. metal.
your awesome and you have saved me time and money fixing my house up
I have heard asphalt shingle last longer with tar paper (felt) than synthetic felt because regular felt works as a reservoir of oil when the shingles start to dry out from heat and precipitation. The felt being brittle decades later shows that the transfer of tar oil is happening.
Southern New Mexico - shingles since 2000's sometime, black tar paper underneath. No bad hail storms in my neighborhood. Roof is still fine, no leaks, but I will replace it soon.
I will never go back to shingles after few yrs it looks ugly we sold that house and build a new one but this time we use metal roof looks more beautiful & elegant.
Metal roofing with copper rain gutters looks incredible. 👍
All you need to do is get a shingle with the added copper, like Atlas Pinnalce Pristine. You will get zero color change or the green alge growth. Metal roof also grows green alge etc as well and will need to be cleaned.
My grandparents had a cedar shingle roof. Lasted a long time. But they replaced it with a metal roof and and gutter system. SO many troubles with the roof and gutters. Some is improper installation and some is the nature of the product. They get a ton of snow, not the steepest roof ever. Most winters shoveling off the roof is normal because a lot will come at once. Like 2ft in a day or 2. The roof screws loosen over time, so like this year I had to retighten many of them. Also there was an area that had some slack in the roof metal that was never worked out to the end of the roof. Someone measured just slightly off. So this caused one area to totally buckle in the middle because of the tension! I screwed it down best I could but wouldn’t be surprised if that came up again. Each screw hole is an area for possible water intrusion. The metal can last a long time, but the rubber washers for the screws are probably like 40-50 yrs. My parents have a shingle roof from 2006, still looks like new. Spray foam roof, one area does have a small attic. Vented soffits. Under no trees, and have lots of wind. I’m highly impressed with it, and I think it will last a long time. My dad built a metal roofed and sided garage in maybe 2010 or something and he had to tighten some screws as well
Any videos on attic ventilation for your new roof?
I live east TN, my original dimensional shingles lasted 20 years 6 months. We have several storms some severe storms every year. I just replaced mine with a 50 year pinnacle pristine class 3 impact resistant shingle.
Interesting to hear the concern about snow dumping from metal roofs. I seen a few videos on rooftop solar covered in snow and the possibility wasn't addressed.
Our family just got a metal roof. Overall we are quite happy with it, but yes snow does slide off it quite fast. It hasn't caused any issues. But if you have a sloped roof with an angle that could dump snow right over your head as you walk out the door, you may want to install some sort of railing over that section of roof to stop the snow from sliding there.
I changed my shingles maybe 2009 but I didn't know their was a warranty on them ! Thank you sir
Depends, if the contractor is a certified installer of that brand of shingle and they actually used enough of the required system to meet the requirements for the warranty and if they actually sent this all in and applied for the warranty for the owner.
Great explanation of tar paper vs. modern underlayment
Here in South Africa the metal roof works because it's priced better and if painted a light colour(ideally white) the heat in summer doesn't build up and the metal tends to last longer. Also with a booming solar panel market it's better to fit the bracket onto metal or solid surface than a shingle. A bonus to your home would be to install a reflective radiant barrier in the attic for comfortable interior temperatures just in case (assuming the metal roof is a light colour).
Do they use tiles in SA? Here in Australia you don't see shingles much except very steep roofs. It's either thick tiles or metal (Colourblind).
@@bluejay313 yes there are tiles in SA and some older homes still have asbestos sheets. We don't have shingles here and the cheap homes have corrugated metal installed.
Still no shingles in south africa?

When you think about re-roofing your home keep in mind how long you are going to live in it. And you want a roofer/owner doing a free estimate. If a salesman comes out, you are more likely getting a higher est to make up his commission.. And it's best to roof your home in the early spring/summer, so the shingles have time to seal down. Never roof in the winter you will have much more problems in the long run.
Here in Florida our winters are not as cold as up north.
@@staresce How about the wind? You still get high winds.
Just replaced our original three tab 27 yr old roof with Certainteed Landmark Arc shingles in Heather Brown. Has the copper infused to fight algae growth. Love it. A neighbor replaced theirs maybe 8 yrs ago with three tabs. The black growth on it is terrible looking. I had considered metal but HOA here won't allow metal roofs.

Asphalt shingles are cheap and effective. Easy to repair. All my asphalt shingles have lasted for 20+ years. At the cost of going Asphalt shingles, I can do them many times over versus the more expensive options.
Yes, they are cheap and easy. But some people get bamboozled by fancy alternatives coughcoughsolarcoughcough that sound good and may make a "statement" but aren't really worth it - especially if it's not your "lifetime" home that you'll never sell.
This tells me I still need to get a metal roof. Looks used? Good, adds character paint it.
I love the coat rack behind you at the beginning!
and the other big thing about exposed fastener steel roofs is that the rubber sealing washers on the screws dont last forever, especially if they are crushed too much during installation. The UV exposure, thermal expansion of the steel sheets and freeze thaw cycles slowly wear down the rubber washers on the screws, once they go its going to leak everywhere. in 10-15 years you will have to pay someone to go up and re-do all the screws adding to the cost even more.
I'd rather replaces screws in 15 years than replace the actual roof cladding. Just my opinion
That's why on the roof the screw goes on the rib not in between so it doesn't matter near as much
@@alexcross5166 For sure, that's what my manufacturer instructions directed. I'm sure over the decades they'll still get weathered. It's never 100% forever but a small price to pay for maintenance

Built my house in 83 replaced in 2019. Ventilation is key with shingles. Also taxes are higher with metal here and resale shingles ad more value to the price of your home.
I just want my roof to last another ten years, and by then, I figure they will have really great solar-panel roofs.
Get out of my mind Mitch... 😉
No.. just no...
Metal.... Especially in snow.. cold but dump load regularly... Do a solid foam insulation between rafters and roof. The big week spot is the screw gaskets.....
@@adamlewellen5081 Why?
That's not going to happen in 10 years. Best we'll do in 10 years is upgrade solar panels for 20% efficiency to 30-40% and increase the duration and efficient of the inverter.
Wow this is one of the next projects on the list. Thanks Jeff.
Thank You for being a consumer advocate. I appreciate your research on home maintenance. MRSLadyBug
Okay! I have a question at the conclusion he’s arriving to at 15:55.
I missed the reason why the initial investment is so much lower? Are shingles really less expensive than the metal roofs?? The quotes I am getting for my mom’s are showing that metal is considerably less expensive…
When the dude said you only get 5-7 years from a brand new 3 tab shingle roof, I couldn't take him serious anymore.
Waiting on my builder to have the metal roof installed on our new build!
As a Roofing Master (From Germany ) I have to say that those 2 systems are by far the cheapest and in price and quality compare to what I mostly do . In Germany its never done (except for garden sheds ) for a reason.
Very nice color in the background!
Yay! I'm in the middle of painting my house in a very similar color. I've been really worried that it wasn't the right color.
@@mitchjohnson4714 The right color depends on if you plan on selling the house soon and want something neutral or if you really love it. Now that I know how to paint I really choose colors that we love I'm not painting for the general public anymore or to sell the house. If I do need to sell the house I'll just repaint it a neutral color.. :) Well sorry for the rant and good luck with your color
thanks for this, I have to replace my roof this year. here in 9b because of the heat, car batteries are another item that even though there's a general warranty of life expectancy you usually will get a year to a year and a half less out of it.
People have been killed by snow avalanches off roofs. In my experience, metal roofs send huge sheets of ice and snow off at once, while shingle roofs allow the snow to melt slowly. A friend's car was smashed by snow sliding off their metal roof. Also, I've noticed metal roofs more prone to leaking where the metal screws are loosened by ice.
There are ice and snow breakers that can be put on the roof to solve that issue. Some metal type of roofs the fasteners are hidden so that doesn't happen with those types of roofs.
You could inspect the decking from the attic
This comparison was very helpful to me. Thank you. My house needs shingles. Not metal. The home determines the need.
Is this product a Class 4 impact rating ? In the States you can often receive an insurance discount for a shingle that in Class 4 rated.
but the insurance companies will then make you sign an agreement that you can't have complete replacement in the event of storm damage
Great video and info
Glad it was helpful!
I know its not available yet... But what are your thoughts about Solar Tiles, such as Tesla's Solar Roof? If you're planning on putting solar panels up anyways that is...
One of the best part of that roofing system that I think is that its modular, if one tile breaks, or fades, you simply replace the tile, not the entire roof...
Poor return, worse than traditional solar panels. More expensive. If you try and sell the house, no bank will finance if since it's on a separate lease and prone to fail. Just don't fucking do it unless you plan on living in the house for your entire life and paying off 2 mortgages.
this video was already posted October 20th on the channel. Why a repeat?
I’m happy he reposted. I didn’t see it then and my husband and I are looking into replacing our roof within the next year.
we simply put up the conversation element from that video. it never got many views that far into the old video. Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I've been following you for years and did my entire house because of you and the things I learned. So thank you!
I had made ne done here 💜 n Edmonton nton last June with BP shingles love them by an awesome local company
The company you hire is a more important decision than the material you use. Most roofing companies are high volume installers and care little for quality workmanship. Do you research and hire a company that has experience and isn't chasing storms. As for the information in this video, the designation of a 25 year roof, or 30 year roof is not a guide for the life expectancy of that roof, it is the manufacturer's warranty on that material for defects. It doesn't mean that shingle will last that long. A typical composition shingle's life span is based on many factors but typically you are lucky to get to 25 -30 years excluding wind and hail damage. As for metal, it depends on the type of panel. Any exposed fastener system will require replacement of the fasteners every 7 - 10 years as the washer weathers out. A concealed fastener system is a far better choice for a home and if installed correctly can last a very long time. But, again the paint will fade and visible damage to the surface will occur over time and insurance will not typically pay for cosmetic damage on a metal roof because it is still structurally sound.
Your last name is "THORman"!!!??? THOR! Thor the all mighty man! 😆😆😆 Man, you have such a great name and it goes so incredibly well with your line of work!!! 👍😂😂😂 I love it!!! 😆😆😆
Yes! Thank you!
Jeff, your comment about not having good airflow in your farmhouse made me think of another question. I also only have gable vents in my house, and I've recently had air conditioning put in. Now I'm concerned if I need an attic fan to prevent condensation, but I have no idea where to start. (Also I know this is a DIY channel, but I think I'd be having someone else do it.) Could you do an episode on attic fans, please?
This is great Jeff. I'm about to buy a new roof in Massachusetts
In 1991 Oakland, CA had a disastrous fire in the Berkley Hills. As a result, replacing roofs with wooden shake shingles was no longer permitted. The wildfires which have burned and are still burning will probably cause the prohibition of asphalt shingles. What fire-resistant roofing material(s) would you recommend as a possible replacement(s)?
What do you think about solar reflective shingles
Metal all the way with tar paper under the metal put on myself 12 years ago no leaks removed the old roof first.
But what about hail and other disasters? I heard that metal roofs can manage while shingles fail. Also, I heard metal roofs can reduce your cooling bills as they tend to reflect sunlight more than asphalt.
Do all Canadians say ASHphalt instead of ASSphalt?
Love the vids! Thanks!
Yes we do. And roof not ruff :)
Yea we do
Nope. I pronounce it as it's spelled - asphalt. Not sure where ash comes in to this. Perhaps a dyslexic roofer mixed up the p and h...?
The word asphalt comes from the Greek "asphaltos," meaning "secure". Everything that is valuable in crude oil is first removed and put to good use. Then what remains is made into asphalt cement for pavement. Asphalt consists of asphalt binder and mineral aggregate mixed together then laid down in layers and compacted.
I'm from the states and that's how my family pronounces it. Also roof not ruff
@@Laking86er it's mahzduh, not mazduh.
If you have shingles they have medicine for that....
How do you a ? Installing ice guards on is the best way to ensure an avalanche does not occur after or icy conditions. This is particularly important in places where heavy snowfall occurs during winters
Good topic - could you look at flat roof options i.e., for those of us that live in a condo and have input into this decision. Thanks!
Just decided to shingle in Australia.
Hi Jeff, I'm a relatively new follower and love your video's. On this one I feel like you might have missed the point --- there are different types of metal roofs and costs vary considerably (just like with shingles). Why not put something on that really lasts 50 years vs one that says 50 years and only lasts 25? With no soffits and global warming how much thought went into baking the shingles - this will reduce shingle life. Possibly, you should be able to sell the house with a metal roof with a premium for the roof built into your price.? This is a BIG topic and I just feel it could have been approached differently. You justified your decision but didn't answer the question you pose as the title indicates - which is best? Love your videos and I'll keep watching! Best regards!
Who's underlayment did you use here? Thx
How about this errbody: METAL. SHINGLES. no exposed fasteners and only a little more than standard R panel. Look it up!
Loving your channel! Would you share the color of the walls and the floor chosen in the area you're standing in?! Thank you!
Cheers Jennifer, I have already forgotten all of that. the flooring was from mohawk for sure.
