- Ever since it was released, the E60 BMW M5 has received criticism for its underwhelming SMG gearbox. But today we join Matt as he drives what every fan of the E60 M5 has wanted for years.... a manual touring.
Big thanks to EverythingM3s for providing the car:

This manual conversion changes everything for me… with that engine and the manual box, it’s now on my bucket list of cars to own.
It basically is already a manual being a robotic one, people and their manual bandwagon, it's getting tiring realy. A csl is a track focused car which needs to be as fast as can be, why would you want a manual? It takes so much potential away from a car, for example, the s3 exige has a manual and it's nice and all but it could just never realy get good times due to it's manual gearbox so komotec developed a dct for it and it's just a monster now. Also traffic jams these days are inevitable, how fun is a manual than? I will never get the manual bandwagon, it's fun they say and I don't see it and I had way more manuals than auto tranny's.
@@swansmeister 99% of m5 owner never trackday their car. A manual is superior for everyday fun, especially compared to an SMG which is only fun when you drive like a madman
@@williamskagen9901 a modern auto or dual clutch is as perfect as it gets and fun at all area's not to mention better at everything. Like a 400hp car isnt fun without a manual. I know being fast isnt everything but you could have a manual new m3 and lose from a golf r just because it's a dsg, not fun to me, traffic jams with a leg fucked up from having to push the clutch in every 15 seconds also doesnt sound fun to me. I agree with older cars a manual is better but in a newer car nah auto is the way.
We have pretty different opinions on what driving enjoyment is it seems. The fact that a DSG golf R with a tune could be faster than my manual car doesnt bother me in the slightest. While the golf driver is miserable with his car farting every time he shifts, I get to feel physically involved in driving my car on a completly different level even at lower speeds. Ofcourse a manual transmission is slower. They have been slower for decades, but that isnt the point for the people interested in manuals. Just to make sure, excluding trackdays you do agree that the 15+ year old E61 m5 is 100% better off with a proper manual compared to the original SMG right?
The SMG transmissions in the E46 M3 and E60 M5 were very unreliable. So most people just removed the SMG and fit in the manual transmission instead. It made the car more engaging to drive and more reliable.
Not sure if it's because of the powertrain it has, but even if I know the E60 is not an objectively "beautiful" car, I find it more and more attractive as the years go by. I still can't believe the fact that someone said "hay, let's put a big V10 in a sedan", and then it was used in an estate too... 😍
The video was lovely, as always! Looooooove this channel!
Whoever had that idea deserves a medal! Thanks for tuning in 🙌
well tbf the rear of the e61 fixes a lot of the looks issues the e60 had. Different designer from Bangle. I'm biased though
dont forget twin turbo V10 C6 Audi RS6
That induction howl from the carbon intakes / plenum sound amazing on both these V10, and also the e92 V8 power plants
Isn’t it just?
"...but this got soul"
And that's why we love it, thanks scd
I actually think it has aged very well. Bangle tried and, in my eyes, his designs were daring but not bad at all. I also love "stock" well kept and clearly driven cars. No extra m badges, body kits or stupidity, just pure passion for BMWs. Lovely video!
Remove the roof rack rails and that's a beautiful Wagon. I hate how in Europe is called a State. At 4 years old we had a Simca Station wagon. The wagon name sounds mean and that's what it should be called. Mean looking monster wagon and in alpine white! Lucky owner!
I own a manual M5, it is the most amazing experience to own and operate. I have driven the SMG, it’s a great experience as well but stick shifting just hits different :) awesome video!
I was lucky enough to own a Sedan 2008 E60 M5 Manual. But to own a "M5 Wagon" would be cooler to own. Great review mate.
I just saw this exact E61 estate (same plate) parked in my neighborhood in Hong Kong and found this video. What a legend.
Very cool! Amazing
Another excellent video. It is ironic that the lukewarm reception for the E60/61 M5, was similar to the E90x M3. But now people really are waking up to the desirability of both of them, especially with manual transmissions. You can really enjoy the razor-sharp throttle response of these cars when you have to synchronise throttle and clutch, proper interaction and engagement.
Soul is absolutely the right word to describe them.
I wish I could find roads like that nearer to me - dare you say where this was filmed?
Actually, one thing I don't like on mine is the throttle input lag. There is alway like a 0.5 second delay when I press the throttle. I guess that I'm used to heel & toeing drive by cables!
You did it again, guys! Dreams have a lot of space in the trunk😁😁😁
I really enjoyed it! Cheers
Why thank you 🙌
that shift transition was perfect
The E61 is madness. 550+ hp in a five-door estate. It gets less than 8 km/l and is ludricously expensive to maintain. But hey, its grille is allright.
My step father had an E60 M5, silver, SMG, in silver with black leather seats and brushed aluminium trim. I was about 14 when he got it. Absolutely unforgettable experience and it will always resonate.
Clearly the coolest estate car ever.
Ty for this great, relaxing video. Have a great 2024!
Happy new year!
The legend gets even more legendary
🙌🙌🙌
I couldn’t imagine anything but a manual in my e60 550. The style definitely grows on you.
We have an E61 LCI 550i with the 6-speed. It's fantastic. You wouldn't believe how little i paid for it a few years ago either...
Still have my Dinan S2 6 speed e60 m5 - going on 12 years and 180,000 miles of fun! This m5 and my e28 m5 are the two that I would be hard pressed to let go. I only wish we got the e61m5 in The States.
Wish I never sold mine - used my daily and honestly the smg was fine and in m25 traffic was a benefit! The only thing hard to deal with was the single figured mpg 😂
Compared to even todays Japanese cars, E60's saloon interior looks like a fancy minimalism.
Jeez, your vids are really great quality these days. Interesting cars, thoughtful presentation. Professional and thoroughly enjoyable. Looking forward to the next one. 🍻
Thank you very much! We're trying hard to push the quality 🙌🏻
That's basically my dream car. Bought a new E60M5 back in 2006 and loved it, but had to let it go in 2008. Since then there have been various things, currently an X5M and still have my E36 M3 GT (Twin Turbo) but I still miss the S85B50. Always wanted a touring but they weren't available initially.
That soul taking sound though...
That is cool has hell. The noise from that V10 is pretty epic in stock form but with that intake…..holy moly.
I think the very fast modern cars often miss that S word you mentioned….soul. In reality do you really need to go any faster than these are capable of?
Great video! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Good job promoting this vid 🤙🏼
Like learning to,drive a manual, there’s a learning curve to a SMG (as there is for DCT etc), apart from a bit ‘exciting’ when edging in to garages and parking bays where you only want to tickle forward a few cm’s it suits the engine and can be driven very smoothly with a slight lift between gear shifts. With the high revving engine and lack of low down torque a manual doesn’t really suit, you need those 7 gears and quick changes and flat shifts to get the full performance. I understand some prefer a manual over auto, just realize you do give up something, so way that up.
Love the estate M5. Loved my E60 M5. 👍
Beautiful,thank you
Thanks for watching
You guys are crushing it with these videos. Are you featuring both these cars in your next Naturally Aspirated Heroes Series?!?!?! 😍
I have an E61 525i with a manual gearbox and love it.
This M5 Touring has always been my dream family car. The sound is just insanely good. 👌
Sadly, we don't wagons in the states. M5 wagon would be really cool to have
Makes you wonder what the new M5CS would be like with a manual. Likely too much torque for a clutch to last very long. Dinan in the US did some upgrades to both the e39 and the e60 to open up the reserves that the factory held back.
Stunning. What a car.
All we want to hear is that howling magnificent glorious engine plus coupled with a Manuel. Heaven does exist on earth. I’ll take it on blue please
Symphony in the air... State of perfection for sure.
Definitely drive to perfection
Awesome video! What road was this on please?
Whoever did the music for this loved the Tron Legacy soundtrack. And copied it note for note.
Update: The E61 was back in HK just 2 days ago, and the local S85 owner's club here went to a local Classic car dealership called "Car Farm" to have a first glimpse of the wagon.
Nail, head, as far as the engines BMW delivered at that time. The V8 and V10 were definitely something special. The looks are definite love or hate after the beauty of the E38,39 and 46.
Waiting for this video for so long
🙌🙌🙌
What a dream daily!!
Your videos are so wholesome. Love it 🙏
This is my dream M5
Hi Guys...Keep up the Quality Content...Is it Possible for you to do a Review on The Mini Cooper S r53 the Supercharged Version of The First Bmw launched Mini...I own One and its a Blast to drive and the sound of that Supercharger is just something Els.
That car is stunning, it was stunning when it was new and it's even more stunning now. I want a manual *E61 M5 Touring.
@@maverick3644 Thanks for the correction, wasn't aware of the difference :D
Great video for sure! However, when released the reception for the E60 M5 was not lukewarm, it was raved about! It was compared with the Ferrari F430, also released at about the same time, as the ultimate 2 car garage. The SMG was new tech back then, and wasn’t criticised as it has been since. It’s only since release the reception has changed - but believe me, the reception was that it was one of the greatest cars made up to that point! 😁
I really liked the e39 m5 (and the e34) but I totally loved the e60s design when it came out. Such a statement, perfect design in my opinion 😎👌🏻
Bucket list car 👍🏻

The manual conversion makes it so much more desirable . I love a fast estate but that is really special , na v10 , the sound is incredible.👍🏻
On a ship to Hong Kong?? I’m from Hong Kong hopefully I can see this somewhere here one day…Also, £6k for a manual conversion is a steal for these cars, especially considering these e60 m5 manuals in the states costs more than $25-30k right now for a high mileage one, defo a more reliable and cheaper to run in for long term ownership.
The traditional Chinese warning label in the engine bay shows this very car is one of the three officially imported E60 M5 Tourings in Hong Kong.
A story like this will definitely mark itself in HK's automotive history.
Surely this has to be the apex of super-estates? They didn’t make an E39 M5 Touring (well there was that one prototype).
Rs6 estate had a v10 for a while with AWD
The cost of conversion is acceptable. The amount of enjoyment? Amazing,unrealistic.....That is my opinion.
Good value for money then?
@@scd Of course, we all know what awaits us with the electrification of vehicles in a few years. Manual transmission on V10 station wagon BMW - It can hardly be surpassed! And another important thing, the design has aged very well.
Darren has got good taste 🤝
Brilliant
Tenéis página traducida a español? Buenos reportajes, felicitaciones.
Estates excite me far more than any modern supercar.
Dream car, absolutely gorgeous…
I’d take a mid 2000s E61 over anything out there 😮💨
Why do my dream cars always hit the spotlight? I'll never be able to afford to build one myself!
Perfekt daddy car 👍
Can’t wait till we can import these wagons into the US
I didn’t even know this was possible
Great great car. Very nice video for the petrol heads ;)
Thanks a lot!
My goodness....Need.
I have the 550i estate and I really wish it had a manual gearbox.
my dad has a e61 525i and its pretty fucked up and he doesnt have the money to keep it and he is going to sell it soon. its such a great car, the exhaust is broken and it sounds so great its a inline 6 and it has about 190 hp, not much but its really fun. Sadly he doesn't want to keep it, even though i'm starting my apprenticeship as a mechanic this year. i wish i could keep it.
We might have had manual e60 m5s but they were few and far between. Also, America wasn't lucky enough to get an estate m5.
On a ship to Hong Kong... going to Contempo Concept by any chance ?
👏plz do an m6
I’m talking for everyone in the U.S.A....WE WANT MORE MANUALS!!!!!!!
The e60 m5 was actually only offered with a manual in the NA market
@@Mdgld In a country where 90% of cars are autos 😵💫, what were bmw thinking
I miss my e60 M5 2006. I can say I owned a legendary car.
Shiiiitttt a manual, V10 wagon 😳 US only got the manual and RoW got the wagon, bringing them together for the first time
Boom.
Here before 3M views 🤙
🤞😂
I've driven a manual E60 (the first one converted in 2020) and it was good fun rowing my own gears. I didn't feel disappointed going back to my SMG gearboxed car though.
Also, if it matters, without a shorter diff, the manual box makes the car slower to accelerate.
Why did you go back?
@@fredm1519 cos the manual car wasn't mine 🤣
@@TheM5Dog Everything M3s who did the conversion at least with the CSL and E46s they convert offer their own shorter diff. So it's probably an option...
@@teabagtowers3823 I am certain they offer a shorter diff, but that has its trade offs as well. BMW never intended for the V10 to get a manual box, they only did it to keep the USA happy. Same with the F10 M5.
@@TheM5Dog Yeah a shorter diff might sacrifice a bit of top end speed but where exactly are you going to be doing 200 in this thing unless you live in Germany? That and I'm sure even BMW nowadays would acknowledge that the SMG box by modern standards was a pretty crap gearbox.
I want to see someone convert the SMG to DCT from e92, as far as I know, the trans is bolt on to the engine
It's a shame we don't get these anymore
It is! End of an era
I’ve had no problems with my SMG in the last four years of ownership , it’s a bit jerky in traffic or if driven in towns/city’s ( this is a no no ) , the one thing to mention is don’t bother with full auto as it’s awful with the SMG 3 , this car with this gearbox was made to be driven up in the rev range in manual setting and it does this brilliantly , along with the evolve carbon fibre air filter kit plus switchable exhaust it’s sublime …highly recommend it 👌😎
PS; in the video you mentioned the brakes , I’ve owned an M3 E46 a few years back which was one of the best driving cars at the time for under 10K but the brakes were awful and definitely needed up grading considering the how fast it was , the V10 M5 is totally different as the brakes are outstanding and at speeds of around 170 mph ( the fastest I’ve been in this car so far and that was with ease very impressed ) the brakes handled the car no problem at all , so on public roads of speeds around 80 or so mph their’s more then enough stopping power.
When E60 came out back in 2003ish I was in awe, the 1st BMW I wanted to buy, unfortunately the bloke in the office downstairs purchased a 523i so that was it, I couldn't copy him. All these years later, and, externally, still stylish.
😍😍😍🔥🔥🔥
What a unicorn!
Isn’t it just 🙌
@@scd Oh absolutely! Estate, V10 and Manual. What more could you possibly want?
The car was designed by Davide Arcangeli, Chris Bangle was his boss and he only signed off on it.
Music? Namn of the songs?
Wow
if I could only have one car did you say 6k for the conversion?
Heaven weeps as people choose suv over estates :(
One thing I can't get my head around is how the BMW M5 E60 with its limiter removed can do 205 mph delimited while the BMW M5 F10 and F90 competition can't do over 200mph with the limiter removed in stock form...??
Rev range + bhp = top speed
@@jonsohaei1971 + smaller frontal area. Less aero drag.
Less cylinders= the power delivery is not as smooth, Different gearing, higher weight. In total the e60 runs away above 100mph
My guess is a combination of gearing and revs. More revs = higher top speed for a given gear ratio. I don’t think the new M5s are HP or aero limited.
@@n9athan revs won't help - if you can't overcome aero drag
I'm amazed by the smoothness of those roads!! No cracks no pot holes, no strange abrupt dips or bumps.
👍👍👍
A high revving v10 with a manual tranny ? Yes please.
❣️💞💕
It's a shame that Estates/Wagons got superceded by CUV's while providing the same amount of practicality
From your video it seems that the only legitimate way of getting a manual M5 in HK is to buy one in UK and convert it in UK, before shipping back to HK
It can now be convert locally in Hong Kong with the everythingM3s conversion kit.
@@couponvideo was this a UK car to start with then?
@@danielbrown4579 no. It is a Hong Kong registered car since day one of its life
It’s an E61🙈👀
It really needs the DCT box from the E92 ;-)
No
@@r129r16pfl this and the s65 were built to have a fast gearbox. These engines live at the very limit (they aren’t really that fast outside of it). Sadly BMW got it wrong the first time around with the SMG3 and then corrected course with the DCT. I have had both DCT and manual and in the M3 the dct is the better option. DCT + s85 is next level awesome.
I would prefer DCT swapped sedan
I wish my bank balance was robust enough to run something like this car. It’s gloriously outrageous and a giant F U to sterile EVs. This is what cars are about.
These will be $100k+ before you know it.
People forget why SMG is better…. If you get a manual you CANNOT turn off DSC. I slide my SMG m6 whenever I can. Once you Learn how to use the gearbox it’s as enjoyable as any other manual car you own.
If you like driving, drive a manual.
