Yeah that was weird. The 440i is underrated a bit from factory with a great trans, but it isn't to that extent, and in my experience the s85 M cars reel anything under 500hp/400tq in once you get to higher speed.

E60 M5s don't regularly do close to flat 12s so even in it's best spec and even as a Sedan, the M440i is quicker. Best I've seen is 12.3 at Atco with a Manual doing a Clutch Drop for a stocker so I'd say that on average, it's a mid 12s car at best.
@@mrnicktoyou watch my vids, demonstrate it personally. Torque is what wins races, especially at low end. Not many NA car will get you close to 450 WHP torque at low RPMs like most turbocharged BMW’s are capable of doing. Plus, aerodynamics, transmission, and weight are a big factor.
Are you sure you put the 500hp mode and gearbox speed settings to the max? From starting its the p400 mode engaged automatically. But this gearbox is a shit for sure.
It's not a shit. It jerks, but it's not slow. SMG is fast but there are many settings of it. They probably didn't set it right. Also I'm not sure if M5 driver was going on M mode. If not, the car had only 400hp and TC on

Was thinking that too. How on earth can a car that has 130 more horsepower and about equal weight not pull away in the roling race? Even in the most favourable conditions it was just edging ahead, which you would expect if it wasn't in M-mode and only has about 400hp. Either that or that V10 doesn't deliver 507 hp anymore or never has. (Remembering how an M6 got thrashed as well by a 997 911 Carrera S with 'only' 355 hp on a road course in Top Gear years ago)
I feel like they should have used the Silver M5 they used to race the 1 series and 8 series, it looked like it was in better shape to race compared to the estate.
You need to know so much about that M5 to use it properly.. 1) need traction control off to access the final 6th aggression setting on the gearbox (“fast af boi” setting) 2) need to select the “Power” mode to get the full 500hp In the unlocked 6th aggression setting the gearbox is actually impressive, although it might explode in the long term if used often 🤔 not sure on that
Me and my brother both had an E60 M5 a few years ago! Few things to add, the exhaust must be stock, that sounded so limp compared to how they can sound, I had straight pipes from the cats, back, and it sounded insane! Also I had mine about 4 and a half years, my brother had his almost 4, in that time he had a dodgy seatbelt sensor, and I had to replace something called an ionic control module or something, it boosted the voltage to the spark plugs apparently! Anyway neither of us had any gearbox issues or engine issues, And it’s safe to say that they got driven pretty damn hard for most of the time we owned them so they’re not as delicate as the myth suggests! Neither am I saying they’re bullet proof, but yeah they were awesome and well worth the money!
That SMG transmission was pretty revolutionary for its time over 10 years ago, but it's pretty god awful with how it shifts and feels. It's just way too jerky for me, and the shifts are a bit too uncomfortable. I mean those who have driven these BMW cars with the SMG transmission are probably used to it, and it can be fun for those people, but I think most people can agree that this is not that great in the automatic. I will say, the manual mode is definitely waayyy better and a bit smoother, but it still isn't the smoothest.
You need to do a rerun on a 60mph roll, race mode p500 setting, traction control off to unlock the fastest shift setting. That m5 shifts very quickly in that setting, and once it’s cooking above 100mph and that 7speeds gearing comes into play, that car flies. In every m5 race, a lot of cars beat it from 50-90mph, and launch, but it just comes coasting past in the top end. Above 100mph those things are freight trains. Rev them to 8500 and let it eat, won’t find many modern cars that can run with it

The V10 only has around 400 hp without pressing the sport button, and that would fit this race outcome very well. 507 hp are much quicker in the rolling race then an 440i.
I remember my old BMW E60 clutch was terrible used to always slip and had to be replaced gladly on the warranty but I have to admit it’s a brilliant car with a brilliant engine I can see the score going up in value soon

The smg was one of the most fun car ownership experiences to be had. Never had I so much fun with a robotized manual on an alpine road. You had to feel it, you had to depress the pedal at the right times, it was pure joy once you figured it out. Thats why so many complained about it, supposedly difficult parking or being lurchy. It wasnt at all,not one bit. Unless youre totally incompetent or dont put one bit of effort into it. At it was totally fast enough to be fun esp. above 4500-5000rpm depending on the engine. . Saying its crap shows how Matt is nothing but a poser, doing this for entertainment and numbers, nothing else. A true car guy, bmw, mercedes, freaking Kia, wouldnt say sh*t like that. There was a time and place for that trans. and of course it cannot keep up with this new turbo clone of a clone boring Bmw model. All in all a fun interesting drag race but ruined by a lame poser of a presentor, who is as much of a true car enthusiast as a koala bear.
@@Dulanor just not true, it's a great gearbox when you know how to use it and have the right expectations. It's a sequential manual gearbox, not a smooth torque converter. My SMG3 box is smooth when I want, and violently fast at 8k rpm. But don't forget, it is older technology now so cannot be compared like for like with current technology. Having said that, from direct experience, the SMG3 box is MUCH more fun to use than the ZF8 box. Such a misunderstood gearbox by internet experts and UA-cam posers

I suspect incorrect gearbox settings here (mine certainly does not lurch on change) the trick is to set it to S-6 but, you have no driver aids S5 or D5 really slows the car as I expect we have seen here. It took me over a year to find the right setup in mine :o I also wonder if he was in P500? - he did say it was a mates car and he didn't want to break it, can't say I blame him... P500S with S6 shift setting would have been a different story, far closer at least I'm sure, unfortunately if your settings are wrong it is actually dissapointingly boring and relatively tame to drive!
The m5 e60 manual has a standard 5 series gearbox from that era,it's not great at all ,the shift throws are pretty bad.I wanted to do this swapping on mine ,but honestly i prefer keeping it in 507 hp mode,and i prefer putting the "secret level" shift response which i doubt they put on this video.Heck,maybe they didn't even put the m mode
It’s weird that the gearbox was that slow. BMW's final AMT (before being replaced by a dual-clutch transmission) was the 7-speed SMG-III used in the 2004-2010 BMW E60 M5 and related BMW E63 M6. The SMG-III could achieve a shift time of 65 milliseconds in its most aggressive mode en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automated_manual_transmission
Mat I love your videos but if you’re trying to see the full potential of a car from a roll, stop always doing it in 3rd gear, use whatever gear is best for each car at that speed (50?), because for some cars (as the case with this V10 M5) 3rd gear is too high and there’s no point in doing a roll race when the car takes off at low revs. Only newer turbo cars can pull this off as they have pretty much full torque at low RPM.
My E60 abs failed also. ABS pump went. The problem was the O rings for the pistons. Can be refurbished for quite cheap. You don't need new ABS ECU. BMW don't sell just the pump. You have to buy the complete ABS unit which includes ECU so cost 2k plus vat plus labour. BMW will fit a refurbished unit if you have it refurbished yourself and give it to then.

Agreed. My 08 E60 SMG was dead even with a 2019 GT3 manual up to 130 mph. The M5 should have def fared better in the roll race.
Turbocharged cars make way more torque at lower rpm, which is why rolling races benefit turbocharged cars rather than natural aspiration.

I remember my old BMW E60 clutch was terrible used to always slip and had to be replaced gladly on the warranty but I have to admit it’s a brilliant car with a brilliant engine I can see the score going up in value soon
Could you try fitting a camera inside the competitors’ cars? I understand that some don’t want to show their faces so a camera and microphone facing the speedometer would be nice to hear the engine

It does 100-200 in 8-9 seconds which is faster than an M440i. This one is a really bad example.
It was not in M mode unfortunately... there is button to unleash the horses to 507HP. This test is in regular 400HP Mode

The smg was one of the most fun car ownership experiences to be had. Never had I so much fun with a robotized manual on an alpine road. You had to feel it, you had to depress the pedal at the right times, it was pure joy once you figured it out. Thats why so many complained about it, supposedly difficult parking or being lurchy. It wasnt at all,not one bit. Unless youre totally incompetent or dont put one bit of effort into it. At it was totally fast enough to be fun esp. above 4500-5000rpm depending on the engine.
. Saying its crap shows how Matt is nothing but a poser, doing this for entertainment and numbers, nothing else. A true car guy, bmw, mercedes, freaking Kia, wouldnt say sh*t like that. There was a time and place for that trans. and of course it cannot keep up with this new turbo clone of a clone boring Bmw model.
All in all a fun interesting drag race but ruined by a lame poser of a presentor, who is as much of a true car enthusiast as a koala bear.
Smgs are shit ..... Its extremely well known in the car community , why do you insist on defending dead tech that no one uses anymore?
@@Dulanor just not true, it's a great gearbox when you know how to use it and have the right expectations. It's a sequential manual gearbox, not a smooth torque converter. My SMG3 box is smooth when I want, and violently fast at 8k rpm. But don't forget, it is older technology now so cannot be compared like for like with current technology. Having said that, from direct experience, the SMG3 box is MUCH more fun to use than the ZF8 box.

Sanjay kumar have you ever driven an e60 m5?? Smg is slow under slow driving conditions..if you drive the car all out the smg is one of the fastest shifting transmissions out there especially when the car was new

@Blaik Lewis It's slow on auto mode. When shifting manually, it's really fast.
I'm sorry to ruin your world, but this engine was intended to be matched to the SMG-III. The manual was for America only and it sucked.
Maybe you forgot to set the POWER setting in the MDrive menu to P 500 Sport?
I suspect incorrect gearbox settings here (mine certainly does not lurch on change) the trick is to set it to S-6 but, you have no driver aids S5 or D5 really slows the car as I expect we have seen here.
It took me over a year to find the right setup in mine :o I also wonder if he was in P500? - he did say it was a mates car and he didn't want to break it, can't say I blame him...
P500S with S6 shift setting would have been a different story, far closer at least I'm sure, unfortunately if your settings are wrong it is actually dissapointingly boring and relatively tame to drive!

The m5 e60 manual has a standard 5 series gearbox from that era,it's not great at all ,the shift throws are pretty bad.I wanted to do this swapping on mine ,but honestly i prefer keeping it in 507 hp mode,and i prefer putting the "secret level" shift response which i doubt they put on this video.Heck,maybe they didn't even put the m mode

To be fair, the E6x M5 can do sub 13s quarters easy when driven properly. It would be even I would say in a bit different conditions

Get the e92 then can't go wrong with a N/A v8 it's more reliable and looks better than the newer ones

Mat I love your videos but if you’re trying to see the full potential of a car from a roll, stop always doing it in 3rd gear, use whatever gear is best for each car at that speed (50?), because for some cars (as the case with this V10 M5) 3rd gear is too high and there’s no point in doing a roll race when the car takes off at low revs. Only newer turbo cars can pull this off as they have pretty much full torque at low RPM.
Can Matt confirm that the car was in MDM (power/dynamics) S6 (gearbox)? I find it hard to believe these results.

My E60 abs failed also.
ABS pump went. The problem was the O rings for the pistons. Can be refurbished for quite cheap. You don't need new ABS ECU. BMW don't sell just the pump. You have to buy the complete ABS unit which includes ECU so cost 2k plus vat plus labour. BMW will fit a refurbished unit if you have it refurbished yourself and give it to then.
