Lyrics:
i seen a girl on a one way corridor
stealing down a wrong way street
for all the world like an urban toreador
she had wheels on on her feet
well the cars do the usual dances
same old cruise and the kerbside crawl
but the rollergirl she’s taking chances
they just love to see her take them all
no fears alone at night she’s sailing through the crowd
in her ears the phones are tight and the music’s playing loud
hallelujah here she comes queen rollerball
enchante what can i say don’t care at all
you know she used to have to wait around
she used to be the lonely one
but now that she can skate around town
she’s the only one
no fears alone at night she’s sailing through the crowd
in her ears the phones are tight and the music’s playing loud
she gets rock n roll a rock n roll station
and a rock n roll dream
she’s making movies on location
she don’t know what it means
but the music make her wanna be the story
and the story was whatever was the song what it was
rollergirl don’t worry
d.j. play the movies all night long
she tortures taxi drivers just for fun
she like to read their lips
says toro toro taxi see ya tomorrow my son
i swear she let a big truck graze her hip
she got her own world in the city
you can’t intrude on her
she got her own world in the city
cos the city’s been so rude to her
come slippin and a slidin
life’s rollerball
slippin and a slidin
skateaway that’s all
shala shalay hey hey skateaway
she’s singing shala shalay hey hey
skateaway

Quite possibly one of the most perfect songs ever made.
Still listening to the Straits, April 12th, 2024... and beyond !!
April 16th
Makes two of us as of 4/25/24
Breaker Breaker
Hello April 12! Stretched out like this [here on April 30th (2024)], I can see and hear you clearly. From the distance where I’m at, you look like you’re down a one-way corridor with countless doors on either side of it. There’s a music in this interstitial space. And Hallelujah! Here she comes, Queen Rollerball. She’s making movies on location, and the DJ plays the movies, so she imagines us, you and me, “All night long. All night long.”
Over and out!
61 years young in Illinois diggin' this tune from my college days
Hell yes!
Listening in 2024..anyone else?
Yeah In Manchester, England.
You bet,
Got Making Movies on LP. Now that I once again have an amp with a phono input, time to pull it out. And maybe Dancing By The Pool.

Most definitely
The most underrated Dire Straits song I know
Living on a thin line was extremely underrated but so very important. However it never reached MTV. Once I saw the skate away video I was hooked
Agree. Making Movies was one of the great albums ever.
I did not know there were underrated Dire Straits songs:) I love them all. I could listen to Knopfler guitar anytime.
Not listened to for decades...
Absolutely superb.. goosebumps all over..
My favorite
Favourite Dire Straits song.
Very underrated.
this and solid rock beyond comparison..
easy pleased, ehhh?

my favorite Dire Straits song, I remember when this video came out when I was a little girl. This is visually, one of the coolest music videos ever made.
Hallelujah ! Here she comes.
It's hard to choose, but "Skateaway" is one of their best, by far
He's the most fluid guitar player I have ever heard. It just flows and it's so beautiful. Thanks, Scotland!!!!
Christ that Knopfler can play. Won't be another like him.
Can’t thank the universe enough for bringing me up in the music’s best era … the 70s, 80s and early 90s.
When love and peace was still in the air and there was hope for humanity.
Gone are the days, and gone is this music.
Long live rock n roll 🫶🏽
Thirteen years ago today, on 31 January 2008, we lost Jayzik (Jay) Azikiwe, the Roller Girl, 1958-2008.
We honour her life, and how wonderful her performance was for this video, one of the greatest of all time.
💖🖤💖🖤💙🖤
I always wondered who that cool roller girl was. Thanks for putting a name to her face. RIP.
@@highnetworthwomeninstitute4572 She was credited as 'Jay Carly' on the credits--which on the original VHS ran in white in the shadowed area below the band.
Rip Jayzik (Jay) Azikiwe.
Interesting person.
Not a skater, mind you...
the 80's. there will never be such a decade with so much talent, imagination, and just good music and videos. WOW!!!

Making Movies....best album. Every song perfection. Mark Knopfler is a true genius!
Couldn't agree more!!!!
For my money, the most brilliantly innovative guitarist ever.
@@ianthomas5955 I completely agree
@@barbrabass6903 Thanks for the reply, Barbra. When I first heard Sultans of Swing over 40 years ago I didn't think it possible for anyone to change chords so quickly and effortlessly so in 1982 I went to see Dire Straits at the Deeside Leisure Centre in north Wales with a pal of mine to see if the magic could be produced live. It could!! Knopfler was absolutely brilliant and his guitar work was around 98% studio quality. I love Mark's solo work as well and play the cd's all the time - they are timeless.
I saw them at Radio City in the from the third row in NYC.... Romeo and Juliet Skateaway, espresso love it doesn't get any better
The roller girl was Jayzik Azikiwe. RIP. She died of cancer at age 50.

Oh no...such a lovely girl. R.I.P. Jay
Jay is a legendess, I have NEVER met anyone quite like her. I’ve known her/fam all my life. She was a lyrical genius amongst other talents she had as well as being way ahead of her time.

I'm with ya. Freshman year at Ohio University. Queen rollergirl. RIP
Yes!
This video, FWIW, is timeless with its minimalist set design (including the lovely Roller Girl). Just love the fade-out of the band playing in the faded sunset.
Recreated for the video for Daft Punk's "Get Lucky," because Daft Punk often honored those who came before.
The guitar solo in the last minute and a half is magic! No show off shredding or noise just tasteful and beautiful playing that captures the mood of the song perfectly
The sound of a guitar crying...... brilliant
My favourite bit of music EVER!
You just summed up MK 😊

❤❤❤ Skateaway that's all
It's fall 1980 living in the dorms in my sophomore year in college. Some guy stuck his speaker out of his window and played this on vinyl. I'll never forget that feeling of appreciating that song so much.
I love it! Little did that guy know he was creating a wonderful memory you’d carry with you forever.

Mark is a Genious , Masterpiece
"Skateaway" is a perfectly composed song, the lyrics and especially Knopfler's singing guitar work capture the feeling of youthful joy and movement. The fact that he makes it about a "Roller girl" instead of just any skater also makes it meaningful because young ladies of that generation were really coming into their own and this song celebrates them and their new found freedoms.
I was 21 when this song and video came out and I admit I cried real tears when I learned that Jayzik (Jay) Azikiwe, the Rollergirl had passed away. But her beautiful performance will live on and inspire young girls for as long as they have dreams and the "Skateaway" video to enjoy.
Damn. You got me crying now.
Roller Girl is my sister 🛼🛼
That statement is really well said.
U r so right. These cats r legendary luvd em then LUV them now!!
Always loved Knopfler's style of guitar playing!!
Remember this album back in the day absolute classic that sounds as good in 2023 as it did when it came out back then
This was the best from Dire Straits. That drum pattern, followed by those keyboards and baseline.... So easy to get lost in those sounds. "Toro toro, taxi"
Rest in peace roller girl, and thank you for the memories....peace....loved this girl....

Yesss totally agree. Those three are side 1 of the Making Movies record. My absolute favourite Dire Straits album.
This and the music video for their Romeo and Juliet are both very good.

Brilliant guitar work by Mark Knopfler, especially at the end of the song. Favourite Dire Straits song by far. A classic.
I was 15, this music made me dream, dance, hope, live....the best days, a whole life in front...
I was 14...🙂...great time to be a young person. I didn't necessarily think that at the time, but we had great music, were not buried in our phones, and didn't have a need for validation from social media.
Cool days 😎
I was 10 and had no idea how awesome this music would once become. It's like a capsule to an earlier dimension in time and space. I'm not exactly sure if it functions the same for those who hadn't first experienced it during it's time of arrival. But it's definitely cool..😎
I was 31 and it did the same shit for me! You like good music!!!
I was 15, too! I have always loved this album. I recorded this video when it was current and watched it lots in the suburbs of LA.
Me too ! I loved this album and I was like 15! I loved to hear him pick………he had his own style and talent!
Always been my favorite Dire Straits song.
Also Industrial Disease.
I remember this video from the earliest days of MTV.
I am 14 and this is my favorite song. Its Just perfect
I was 14 and I used to rock to this song when my parents were out.
Just don't listen to Phil Collins. He is evil incarnate.
I was 14 when this came out & fell in love with this roller girl!
I was in my early twenties when this came out and I still remember how Mark knopfler's guitar works stood out because it was so different/unique sounding than other bands. Of course we only had radio and MTV (back then MTV played music 24/7) to hear music with other than our home and car stereos. Mostly vinyl and cassettes at that time. A friend of mine would buy an album then record it to cassette and put the album away so as not to wear out his album.
How cool is that!!?
This video was played consistently on MTV during its earlier days. This is how I became aware of it and loved it!
Knopfler is Dickens with a guitar, A true craftsman... nobody writes a tune or plays a lick like marky baby..
Well said :)
Making Movies is an appropriate title for the LP. Every song is a story.
he's not dickens.
he's mark twain.
I share your opinion easily
with you my person...
These guys were so ahead of their time, I think they're the best rock and roll band ever!
Fabulous rhythm. British guitarists never cease to amaze.

Who still loves this song that they first enjoyed from watching the video in the early days of MTV?
These old MTV videos make me want to cry. I could tell you what song was next just by hearing hiss of the needle at the beginning. What a time to discover music.....
Yeah at that time I every time I got money I went to the record store to buy an album of THE DIRE STRAITS. That was my outlet when I was in highschool.
Mark Knopfler,, has got to be one of the most underrated guitar players. His tone is crazy good and his phrasing kicks ass
Underrated? Are you kidding me? He’s in most people’s top 3 every time!
@hislatestflame7861 He should be. Sadly,hw is not
His rhythm playing is this song, especially under the verses is unreal.
Man how Jayzik did dance.....what a goddess, what an amazing grace. She lived her life for sure. Forever and ever my skateway girl of my teenager dreams. So pure. My best song ever.

you're absolutely right! People often forget to say that pick is one of the greatest ever drummers.
Rest in peace, beautiful Jayzik.
This is the first Dire Straits song that I ever heard. The quality of this song should have told me that Dire Straits would some day become one of my favourite bands. And, I had a huge adolescent crush on Jayzik Azikiwe (the rollerskating girl, R.I.P.). I loved her smile at 4:46.
The boys were iconic for about 15 years and produced a timeless book of work
I love the last two mins of this song I could drive my Mustang forever with that beat and guitar going....pure magic ....im 62 now nothing now can compare to this
Ha...I used to have this blasting on my stereo graphic equaliser while cruising around London in my '69 Ford Torino GT...circa 1980/81....great memories.....my favourite on Making Movies album :)
Yes! The outro to this song is pure bliss. The volume swells on the guitar are sublime.
Total agreement! That little octave turnaround Illsley does on bass is golden! And the triplet hits on the fade out... bam! bam! bam! It's only been since UA-cam that I've been able to re-hear the full version. Recent digital versions, CD releases of the album(s) of late seem edited a bit. I'll bet there are people who know this song, but aren't aware of it's full outro.
Nice to listen to it over and over again!
The song is great, but the outro I could put on an endless loop
Right there with ya Greg.. I'm 50 and this song will always bring me back to some great times.

My fav Dire Straits song,magic.
This is my favorite Dire Straits song and easily one of the best music videos I’ve ever seen.
What a exceptional song paired with a video that is a masterpiece! Silhouettes, perspective, camera angles, and story-telling all complement the music and lyrics. I wish videos like this were still made. Money for nothing is often cited as a great video but I think Skateaway towers over it in every way.
I thought this video was filmed recently. Then I saw Mark and the band and I was blown away that it wasn’t new at all.
I agree. It's a beautiful video and it doesn't look like videos from it's time. By about '83 music videos came into their own (my opinion is that the Golden Age of music videos was '83-'86) but before then, they were kinda primitive. This really rises above its era. One thing I mentioned in another comment is that the music, itself, was so out of step with its time that for that very reason this video escaped aging badly. I think that's a good principle in general. If you want to make something that stands the test of time, don't stick your finger in the wind. Don't care about being number one. Money For Nothing WAS a number one. It was hot and trendy and what-not. Now it's a museum piece. Not Skateaway.
All the good stuff is never trendy.
You don't get much more 80's than this. Loved skating down this memory lane.
Such a beautiful girl skater.
She's the only, only one❤
RIP Jayzik, you were gone too soon.
Man, I have always loved this song, but I forgot how good the videos for this album are. It’s a little masterpiece.

My sister turned me onto this song.. lyrics are genius.. MK didn't get nearly the press he deserved because he was a bit quirky for that time. Dude can flat out play the chords, sing, least we forget, write killer lyrics. 🤷♂️
