Lyrics:
t’s a mystery to me - the game commences
for the usual fee - plus expenses
confidential information - it’s in a diary
this is my investigation - it’s not a public inquiry
I go checking out the reports - digging up the dirt
you get to meet all sorts in this line of work
treachery and treason - there’s always an excuse for it
and when I find the reason I still can’t get used to it
And what have you got at the end of the day?
what have you got to take away?
a bottle of whiskey and a new set of lies
blinds on the window and a pain behind the eyes
Scarred for life - no compensation
private investigation

This is a most under appreciated song. Pure genius.
Underrated indeed!

under appreciated and underrated song for those people who have poor taste and poor sense of art in music
there is an album called private investigation best songs and you think are underratted
Who is listening in 2024?
I am...This song gives me goosebumps time and time again as soon as the guitar starts to play... Amazing music .. love it

Amazing song until the end of time ... 😍😍

One of the most atmospheric pieces of modern music history
Sorry to sound like an old fart... but .... I really dont think we'll ever see a band of this quality ever again.
+DMC 12 Cool! You have lots of good music at your fingertips... from 60s 70s 80s 90s ... it goes pretty much downhill after that but those 4 decades should keep you going! Enjoy the music and your life.☺
+DMC 12 Cool. I teach drums so will stay tuned!
There are bands of this quality, but they are possibly very obscure and you'd have to search for them on your own.
I agree
yah you have more reason, mark knop is only the best ever
This song has, meaning, depth, quality and feel. everything modern music doesn't have.
indeed
You couldn't be more right. This is the reason that so many acts from the 60's & 70's can still tour for good money. Why? Because they are legitimate and not fake promoted and studio enhanced like the crap force fed on us today. There have always been shitty acts that got overly promoted but only real bands with real talent stand the test of time. Unfortunately there are a lot of good acts that are fairly recent who have real talent but don't get properly promoted because they don't have the right "IMAGE". BOLLOCKS!!!!
@@kevinmcdonald4040 Mate i cannot stomach modern "music" its so crap, in fact all it is, is manufactured shitpop full of wobble-wobble basslines and engineered lyrics made by the same 3 producers, this is the reason why it all sounds the same.
@@Synthematix
Spot on, brother. We need a revival to overthrow this industry which actually destroys creativity and uplifts cookie cutter shite! Thank goodness there is a good amount of the younger generation who latches on to the "older" music and realizes how much more quality was around. They are the hope for the future so we can be done with boy bands, Harry Styles and other rubbish and get back to real rock and real musicians.
@@kevinmcdonald4040 Modern junk doesnt pass as music to my ears, its just noise, done by untalented people who can rarely even play a real instrument, im noticing more and more though today, these new shitpop bands are just copying music from the 80's, this just proves they have no talent whatsoever.
Mark ain't just a brilliant guitarist he is a brilliant poet,an absolute genius ime sure you agree.
And good looking
Completely 👍
One of my favorites songs of all time. Thanks Dire Straits for all the music.
La encuentro muy melancolica.
Today Mark turned 75, happy birthday, Mark, may your music live FOREVER. The greatest guitar virtuoso ever.
I never feel as though Dire Straits got the recognition that they so richly deserved. This song is an epic showcase of the bands amazing talent and is just as astounding today as it ever was. Most bands today would run out of ideas on such a long track but this just builds and builds to the amazing climax. Incredible musicians one and all. Deep respect.
They are Legendary. You can't uplift something that's allready on the top..
@@spinneborstel Thankyou for that, made me smile
I agree
I remember it being in the charts at the time. There was a lot of great music competing but this jewel was held off the number 1 position by survivors eye of the tiger lol
What modern music ?
You don't get many longer songs nowadays not in the mainstream. It isn't gone from music all together. These guys were fantastic tho and also great live. Never seen them but from watching live stuff it's pretty phenomenal. 👍
One of my top five favs by them. This band was fantastic. Knopfler’s voice is almost like a mixture of Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. Add his amazing guitar skills and he’s just an incredible musical talent.
was? still is !!
I couldn't agree more
I agree with you 100%.
@@David_vdk... the band is not together anymore David!
@@edshin1167 their music Will keep them together forever
ONLY 2,260,960 views , shit like bieber have 30..... society going down
I suspect history will catch up. I hadn't really listened to or appreciated that piece for over 3 decades. On the other hand maybe Beiber is good. I've never really heard their stuff ;)
Every society is in same condition. Young generation run after ready made imitational songs.
society was never up.
Well, Bieber is a relatively new artist so it makes sense that his music is so popular. If UA-cam had existed back when this song came out it would've had a ton of views
I hear what your saying but on the positive side this channel has over 2 billion views, so atleast some people know good music.
This music brings out a night of rain, thunder and loneliness alive. Amazing what it can do even after more than 35 years.
I know that feeling very well...
September 1982...one dreary, overcast day with drab, skies. I'm sat at home playing this...perfect!
C est un groupe exceptionnel
J adore ❤
Абсолютно те же ощущения❤
You wouldn't necessarily expect a song like this to make a huge impact on the charts in 1982. Became their biggest hit on home soil. Never be afraid to go against the grain.
Joint highest UK chart position with Walk of Life (both reached no.2).
@@eyebrowman1 Only stopped from reaching number one by Eye of the Tiger.
@ajs41 yes that was right too.
What a song. Pure musical talent, nothing more nothing less.
I am. I love Dire Straits. Reminds me of better days. When musicians actually had real talent. Amen!
Film noir as rock; it is truly awe-inspiring. "This is my investigation/ It's not a public enquiry" - one of the most enigmatic lines in the history of rock music.
And the clip captures the noir atmosphere quite well.
@@marcondespaulo This video would have been better shot in black and white with natural lighting from a cloudy sky.
@@marcondespaulo The clip is weak compared to the song.
Absolutely. The song could be in a Humphrey Bogart film!
Agree with that all day long Mate.
It's impossible they've made a piece so wonderful as this. Every time I listen to this piece I wonder how could they not only imagine such a complicated piece of music, but also crafted into this beautiful, absolutely gorgeous song. Incredible music, period.
This is in harmony with the universe
Mark has true genius. It's complicated but nothing is "overdone". Its perfectly balanced. So it almost feels "simple" whilst being incredibly rich.
This song always makes me feel melancholy and dark... perfect song
2024 and still rocks
Forty years later, it is still up there with the very best.
from 3:45 till 5:30.... absolutely speechless!
When I was 20 in late 1982 and my wife of nearly 40 years (since 1985)was 18 we cuddled up listening to this in South Yorkshire. We still do now aged 62 and 59! The Love over Gold album was a gift to us by my late father in law a very special man indeed. We always thought this track was like a screen play !
❤
Come te..sono del 64❤

Heard this on Top of the Pops yesterday. WOW! Sent me back 34 years. Had the album. Must get on download...
It was a wicked track live too...
Mark at his ultimate best. A phenomenal tune. Bravo !
Mark is one of my favorite guitarists, nevermind his storytelling and songwriting that all go together so well. Dire straits was truly an amazing band!
I dont know what it is about this song, but every time he plucks one of those strings, I feel that tug inside of me as well.
Music is the best shelter we could have... This is an everlasting masterpiece
I had a girlfriend with your name. Was that you??❤😂❤😂❤😂
I'm starting listening one song of Dire Straits and I can't stop. They are amazing. Love them 🎶,🎸
Reap the rewards 🎉❤
heard and played this song hundreds of times in the 70's, couldn't get enough of this record.
Good vibes for older brother
heated. A few puffs of Colombia ganja, or Oklahoma home grown. Glad I grew up in 60s..... Less violent, better crops, needing some help from the man above in order to ascertain exact nature of the time difference.... A time of turmoil, social revolution, and, a time when the community could rely upon communication execs to maintain higher standard for public. Everyone from the dead to the stones could be heard......... This was a great time to be young, in a frat, have a sports car, and, meet other people with whom you could fail. Miserably, spectacular failed attempts often overlooked because of the time. The summer of love, destruction of our various reasons for living, loving and, beginning the fall from Grace... That's radar's story. We're sticking to it.
Erm... this song was not created until the 80s.
@@EmmaPeelman yep sorry typo error 👌🏼👍🏼
Simply awesome acoustic guitar playing. Mark Knopfler ♥️🎸
For me, this was there absolute peak. Subtle, moody, powerful. Everyone is rightly raving about MK's playing, but the whole band are amazing on this (whole album in fact). Love the xylophone! Bass, keys, piano and drums in final passage are awesome. Credit too to the sound engineer and producer for one of the best sounding albums I've heard.
It's like a story being told through music.... Amazing!
A lot of Dire Straits songs are stories told through deft lyrics against a backdrop of first class music and musicianship. For me, Telegraph Road is the apex of this style but all of Love Over Gold is a great band at the peak of their powers.
Nooooooo!!!🥶🥶🥶🥶
Brilliant band…..every song is unique ❤️and poignant
one of the best pieces of music ever!
my favorite
this brings back nostalgia of hearing it in an old 80's advert for BT .
Timeless,enigmatic and beautiful.This song NEVER gets old(imho)
One of the most perfect tracks of all time surely...
I only came across this song because it is referred to in Peter Grainger's book ~A Private Investigation. This song is a perfect match for the book. As much as I love other Dire Straits songs, the technical composition of this one has blown me away. Moody, dark, absolutely brilliant.
"Private Investigations" was a huge hit in France
Commercials for EDF
I remember very well, I was living in France at that time... teenager

Beautiful music. I saw them in Sydney Australia and they were fantastic.

Goosebumps every time ❤
Just Remember Dier Straits Was MTVs Band When They First Came Out With Billy Squire Back in The Good Ol MTV Days "
I've loved this song since the first time I heard it....Fantastic.
Dire Straits and Mark Knoffler are a wonderful experience of music.
Such a powerful song. Makes me tear up 😢
Mark Knopfler knows how make people fall in love with his songs
Legend
Obra prima, dentre tantas canções do Dire Straits! 🇧🇷
Beautiful song! Bravo!
A musical genius. This is the ultimate in song content and performance. Brilliant!
ESPETACULAR,UMA DAS MAIORES BANDAS DE TODOS OS TEMPOS .....
Y'all got that right.
real real music from a gifted band. enjoy a piece of magic ❤
We're in complete agreement. While Mark had a great career and the band played the stuff "they call rock and roll"......that was indeed the Sultan's forte. High quality.
So atmospheric. Bit of a departure from much of their other stuff (which I think you either love or hate) but I’m still listening to this in ‘22.
The sound from 5:10 sounds so Nice with the piano and guitar
SUBLIME BEAUTY!!!
Beautiful.
...this song is only for people with emotional intelligence...- "dla wrażliwych..."
Krzysztof Plewa, aijowszem! :'D wywołuje we mnie dość skrajne emocje i sprowadza do głowy miliardy obrazów... a mark to miłość.
Do tego utworu trzeba dojrzeć. Ja doceniłem go dopiero po kilku miesiącach od pierwszego odsłuchania.
Teraz uważam to za najlepszy utwór DS.
@mosadi85 A drugi utwór który "dotarł" do mnie z opóznieniem to; "Friends of Mr.Cairo."
@mosadi85 Dla mnie zawsze, od czasu kiedy pierwszy raz go usłyszałem, był najwybitniejszym numerem w ich repertuarze. Słuchałem go setki razy, zawsze z "goosebumps". Zresztą cała płyta jest świetna, "Telegraph road" niemal jak rockowa symfonia. To jeden z pierwszych CD, jeśli nie pierwszy, jaki miałem.
Coincido con todos
❤... Beautiful song
Love this for it's flamenco feel.....
For me, Mark is the ultimate guitar player.....the ease with which he plays, be it electric or acoustic and those staccatos in between, just mesmerizing. A unique style all his own

Their best
Was a teenager when first time listening to this song.still listening at 50+.
Same story with me 😉
They knew how to do absolutely good music in the eighties. The proof is that, on this video, there are only 31 Dislikes.
Well counted!
Melodic, beautiful, intense, powerful
Halelulja, this is divine
Writes left-hand , plays right handed . Mark is otherworldly
Good observation
First heard this in 85/86 from their telegraph road album
Masterpiece, I was a teen when I heard this the first time on fall 1982. Still now on my 60th: the melody, sounds that I hear from different positions as if I was in a concert hall, are amazing. You are the most clever artists.
Wow, have loved this song forever. I never knew this video for it even existed!
The nothings in this track are as important as the somethings.
The instruments set the stage for your imagination to fill in the story.
It's perfection.
Yes, that is what lifts this song into the extraordinary.
one of my favourite Dire Straits pieces... very interesting how evocative and poignant the music gets considering how economical it is... brilliant and inspiring work...
i don't remember seeing the video before... it leaves me rather indifferent... songs this inherently cinematic provide their own imagery...
Agreed. You don’t need the video. Just need a dim room and your eyes closed
Tend to agree, one of those songs you personally interpret.
This music helped me keep my sanity during one of my most difficult times. Thank you so much Mr Knopfler.
Super utworek. Lider i grupa również.

beautiful song ... I think I heard it a thousand times ... and still not get tired!!! the guitar is fabulous ....
Mark... you are a genius! Truely beautiful music!
The word AWESOME hardly does this masterpiece justice.
fantastico ....memorias....sublime
Always love this. Kind of reminds of Beethoven's moonlight. Not sure why,but just did.
james belt Exactly !!1st movement, The verse. 2nd movement, the chorus. 3rd movement, THE OUTRO!!
2021 piango ♥️
Just an observation: he is a right handed guitarist and yet he writes "My Investigation" with his left hand. If the video was flipped it would read backwards, so what's going on here? Is he ambidextrous?
Mark is left handed, but he plays guitar right handed.
Mark is left handed but he plays the guitar right handed. Some say this is the secret to his killer playing ! I think it is maybe because his first guitar was a right handed Hofner Super Solid V2, and maybe he found bending hard with his weaker hand.
Most left-handers play right-handed. It's no more difficult to learn
The fretboard requires more dexterity, so the dominant hand is often used.
Myself, I play lefty.
BEST
Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler, never bettered.
One of my all time favourite....!!
I listened to this song for 25 years without knowing there was a VideoClip of it ! This is not a joke, i'm serious, very funny ! This album was released in the year of my birth, very proud, 1982 was a Fantastic Year for Music.

Masterpiece.
Private Investigations is a great song, with good guitar playing and even some random xylophone playing included. The video is dark, the man spying on the woman through his blinds clearly makes her uncomfortable. But it isn’t dwelled on thankfully.
