Lyrics:
t’s a mystery to me - the game commences
for the usual fee - plus expenses
confidential information - it’s in a diary
this is my investigation - it’s not a public inquiry
I go checking out the reports - digging up the dirt
you get to meet all sorts in this line of work
treachery and treason - there’s always an excuse for it
and when I find the reason I still can’t get used to it
And what have you got at the end of the day?
what have you got to take away?
a bottle of whiskey and a new set of lies
blinds on the window and a pain behind the eyes
Scarred for life - no compensation
private investigation

November 2024...who lisent this beautiful track.
Enjoy it
Hearing it for the first time im my life
Moi, j en ai meme reve de cette chanson sans savoir qui la chantait ni quel groupe...j ai mis 3 jours pour trouver.Depuis, je l ecoute souvent...j adore.
When I was 20 in late 1982 and my wife of nearly 40 years (since 1985)was 18 we cuddled up listening to this in South Yorkshire. We still do now aged 62 and 59! The Love over Gold album was a gift to us by my late father in law a very special man indeed. We always thought this track was like a screen play !
❤
Come te..sono del 64❤
❤👍👍
@@maurofila1091 Im from 64 too... 😊
Today Mark turned 75, happy birthday, Mark, may your music live FOREVER. The greatest guitar virtuoso ever.
This song has, meaning, depth, quality and feel. everything modern music doesn't have.
indeed
You couldn't be more right. This is the reason that so many acts from the 60's & 70's can still tour for good money. Why? Because they are legitimate and not fake promoted and studio enhanced like the crap force fed on us today. There have always been shitty acts that got overly promoted but only real bands with real talent stand the test of time. Unfortunately there are a lot of good acts that are fairly recent who have real talent but don't get properly promoted because they don't have the right "IMAGE". BOLLOCKS!!!!
@@kevinmcdonald4040 Mate i cannot stomach modern "music" its so crap, in fact all it is, is manufactured shitpop full of wobble-wobble basslines and engineered lyrics made by the same 3 producers, this is the reason why it all sounds the same.
@@Synthematix
Spot on, brother. We need a revival to overthrow this industry which actually destroys creativity and uplifts cookie cutter shite! Thank goodness there is a good amount of the younger generation who latches on to the "older" music and realizes how much more quality was around. They are the hope for the future so we can be done with boy bands, Harry Styles and other rubbish and get back to real rock and real musicians.
@@kevinmcdonald4040 Modern junk doesnt pass as music to my ears, its just noise, done by untalented people who can rarely even play a real instrument, im noticing more and more though today, these new shitpop bands are just copying music from the 80's, this just proves they have no talent whatsoever.
This is a most under appreciated song. Pure genius.
Underrated indeed!

@navarrouk3487
under appreciated and underrated song for those people who have poor taste and poor sense of art in music

One of the most atmospheric pieces of modern music history
Mark ain't just a brilliant guitarist he is a brilliant poet,an absolute genius ime sure you agree.
And good looking
Completely 👍
I never feel as though Dire Straits got the recognition that they so richly deserved. This song is an epic showcase of the bands amazing talent and is just as astounding today as it ever was. Most bands today would run out of ideas on such a long track but this just builds and builds to the amazing climax. Incredible musicians one and all. Deep respect.
They are Legendary. You can't uplift something that's allready on the top..
@@spinneborstel Thankyou for that, made me smile
I agree
I remember it being in the charts at the time. There was a lot of great music competing but this jewel was held off the number 1 position by survivors eye of the tiger lol
What modern music ?
You don't get many longer songs nowadays not in the mainstream. It isn't gone from music all together. These guys were fantastic tho and also great live. Never seen them but from watching live stuff it's pretty phenomenal. 👍
I am. I love Dire Straits. Reminds me of better days. When musicians actually had real talent. Amen!
You wouldn't necessarily expect a song like this to make a huge impact on the charts in 1982. Became their biggest hit on home soil. Never be afraid to go against the grain.
Joint highest UK chart position with Walk of Life (both reached no.2).
@@eyebrowman1 Only stopped from reaching number one by Eye of the Tiger.
@ajs41 yes that was right too.
This music brings out a night of rain, thunder and loneliness alive. Amazing what it can do even after more than 35 years.
I know that feeling very well...
September 1982...one dreary, overcast day with drab, skies. I'm sat at home playing this...perfect!
C est un groupe exceptionnel
J adore ❤
Абсолютно те же ощущения❤
One of my favorites songs of all time. Thanks Dire Straits for all the music.
La encuentro muy melancolica.
Forty years later, it is still up there with the very best.
Film noir as rock; it is truly awe-inspiring. "This is my investigation/ It's not a public enquiry" - one of the most enigmatic lines in the history of rock music.
And the clip captures the noir atmosphere quite well.
@@marcondespaulo This video would have been better shot in black and white with natural lighting from a cloudy sky.
@@marcondespaulo The clip is weak compared to the song.
Absolutely. The song could be in a Humphrey Bogart film!
Agree with that all day long Mate.
What a song. Pure musical talent, nothing more nothing less.
One of my top five favs by them. This band was fantastic. Knopfler’s voice is almost like a mixture of Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. Add his amazing guitar skills and he’s just an incredible musical talent.
was? still is !!
I couldn't agree more
I agree with you 100%.
@@David_vdk... the band is not together anymore David!
@@edshin1167 their music Will keep them together forever
It's impossible they've made a piece so wonderful as this. Every time I listen to this piece I wonder how could they not only imagine such a complicated piece of music, but also crafted into this beautiful, absolutely gorgeous song. Incredible music, period.
This is in harmony with the universe
Mark has true genius. It's complicated but nothing is "overdone". Its perfectly balanced. So it almost feels "simple" whilst being incredibly rich.
Music is the best shelter we could have... This is an everlasting masterpiece
I had a girlfriend with your name. Was that you??❤😂❤😂❤😂
Наверно одина из величайших произведений данной группы. Слушаешь отрываясь от действительности. Классика. Диск шедевр.
Masterpiece, I was a teen when I heard this the first time on fall 1982. Still now on my 60th: the melody, sounds that I hear from different positions as if I was in a concert hall, are amazing. You are the most clever artists.
Mark at his ultimate best. A phenomenal tune. Bravo !
For me, this was there absolute peak. Subtle, moody, powerful. Everyone is rightly raving about MK's playing, but the whole band are amazing on this (whole album in fact). Love the xylophone! Bass, keys, piano and drums in final passage are awesome. Credit too to the sound engineer and producer for one of the best sounding albums I've heard.
My favourite Dire Straits song. Take me back to the 80's. I could live there for an eternity. Best decade of my life.
One of the most perfect tracks of all time surely...
My friend bought tix to see Mark play a solo show in Toronto years ago. I liked what I had heard from Dire Straits, but never dug deep into their catalogue. He blew me away. Such an impressive musician.
October 2024 : this masterpiece is as vibrant as decades ago. Thank you Dire Straits .
Simply awesome acoustic guitar playing. Mark Knopfler ♥️🎸
Timeless,enigmatic and beautiful.This song NEVER gets old(imho)

Amazing song until the end of time ... 😍😍

The nothings in this track are as important as the somethings.
The instruments set the stage for your imagination to fill in the story.
It's perfection.
Yes, that is what lifts this song into the extraordinary.
Melodic, beautiful, intense, powerful
I'm starting listening one song of Dire Straits and I can't stop. They are amazing. Love them 🎶,🎸
Reap the rewards 🎉❤
Writes left-hand , plays right handed . Mark is otherworldly
Good observation
I am listening
Obwohl wir schon 2024 haben.
Toller song
Love this for it's flamenco feel.....
For me, Mark is the ultimate guitar player.....the ease with which he plays, be it electric or acoustic and those staccatos in between, just mesmerizing. A unique style all his own
This music helped me keep my sanity during one of my most difficult times. Thank you so much Mr Knopfler.
Such a powerful song. Makes me tear up 😢
Brilliant band…..every song is unique ❤️and poignant
It's like a story being told through music.... Amazing!
A lot of Dire Straits songs are stories told through deft lyrics against a backdrop of first class music and musicianship. For me, Telegraph Road is the apex of this style but all of Love Over Gold is a great band at the peak of their powers.
Nooooooo!!!🥶🥶🥶🥶
Mark is one of my favorite guitarists, nevermind his storytelling and songwriting that all go together so well. Dire straits was truly an amazing band!
I dont know what it is about this song, but every time he plucks one of those strings, I feel that tug inside of me as well.
I find it unbelievable that a song of such tempo and structure performed exceptionally well in the single charts.
Would have been number one except it was up against one of the biggest sellers of 1982 in the shape of Eye Of The Tiger.
Heard this on Top of the Pops yesterday. WOW! Sent me back 34 years. Had the album. Must get on download...
It was a wicked track live too...
Goosebumps every time ❤
Dire Straits puts so much thought and emotion into there music. The way music was and isn't anymore
A unique and special band for sure. Sonetimes their live stuff blows my mind!
2023!
AMAZING SONG!
Greetings from Florida 🌴☀️
This song simply exudes that beautiful Noire-ish feel! Great to listen to whilst raining!
The only word I can use to describe this is a "masterpiece"
Evertonnut 1 You are right!!!
It beautifully recorded sound one of classic love this song
So atmospheric. Bit of a departure from much of their other stuff (which I think you either love or hate) but I’m still listening to this in ‘22.
This piece brings back such incredibly deep and intense memories of the music of my late wife and me.
Yes, and tears come, but that is exactly what made these masterpieces so special and why pieces like this have lost absolutely none of their fascination even after all these years - in 30 years hardly anyone will remember the current music of today...
When the album came out, I listened to it loudly at home with headphones on.
I remember being surprised in the chorus.
It's been a long time since I thought of it, and it's the best. 👍👍
Been listening to this song almost 40 years and never seen the video before! Until now.
Me too.
Plenty of people appreciate real music these days no matter what others think, don't see reproduced songs with 80's based original riffs and lyrics, it's easier to say it's my version than original concept, THAT'S WHO LISTENS.
Still have the record and cd of this.. it still is a work of pure art. Dire straits were absolute class
Was a teenager when first time listening to this song.still listening at 50+.
Same story with me 😉
I remember visiting my grandparents some time ago, and not being able to sleep late one night. I walked down to their porch, alongside a river, and put on my headphones and played this song. I’ll never forget, right at the sound of the first riff at 3:59, I saw a flash of lightning off in the distance that lasted for the whole riff. Incredible timing
Mark... you are a genius! Truely beautiful music!
Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler, never bettered.
I have not heard that song in 40 years. I remember all the raw emotions of my life from that time all coming back to me. It’s like a friend I haven’t seen in 40 years come back to life
I saw Dire Straits do this song at Brisbane in 1988? and it was the bes thing I've ever heard live, in a huge open-air stadium. You could have heard it for miles, as clear as a bell.
Couldn't of been 1988, Because the tour ended in Australia on 26 April 1986-I Know you posted this a very long time ago but still
Saw Dire Straits in Sydney back in the mid eighties when they had a show nearly every night for two weeks. Walked up to the box office to see if they still had tickets and they did. We sat in one of the best seats right in front of the stage. I remember Knopfler's guitar acting like a search light, shining out in to the audience. Unforgettable.
Okay I like to introduce Dire Straits Rock'n'Roll Band.
On the bass guitar we have Mr John Illsley
This song always makes me feel melancholy and dark... perfect song
The word AWESOME hardly does this masterpiece justice.
The intensity builds up through the entire song and reaches a climax at 4:56 where you can hear a gun being cocked as the bass imitates a pulsating heart beat, then fired through the sound of guitars as they face each other in some sort of stand off situation.
Exactly! I have the same! At 4:55 you hear the gun reloading! Arrangement championship!
What's amazing about this song is that everything falls perfectly into place...
Most great films need a great theme tune.
This great theme tune needs a great film made for it!
Thank you Mark and DS for such a wonderful tune!
This song should be in a movie!
The song is a masterpiece in all aspects but the ending is the best outro of a song I ever heard.
This track is just superb. Wow!!!!!
2024. This was one of my father's favourite. Growing up, he used to show me the songs that he always listen to, and now im doing the same thing my son, continuing his legacy.
I am randomly listening to this in my flat in the dark and there is a freakin' crazy thunder and lightning storm outside. This is brilliant I can literally feel this song
Charlotte Farine is it still thundering....
That's exactly how I feel everytime I hear this song. A lonely night, rain lashing, thunder, no lights. Amazing what music can do.
I can literally feel the song too... but the thundering is coming from the speakers
Check interruption by ryuichi salamoto, somewhat it have same vibe as this song. But more like night after heavy rain vibe instead rainy night
What an interesting thing i meet also with this song in the heavy rain
The sound engineering on this song is absolute AMAZING. If you have a good recording & system to play it on, set yourself down in the optimum stereo position, close your eyes, and enjoy leaving this world for a few minutes.
heard and played this song hundreds of times in the 70's, couldn't get enough of this record.
Good vibes for older brother
heated. A few puffs of Colombia ganja, or Oklahoma home grown. Glad I grew up in 60s..... Less violent, better crops, needing some help from the man above in order to ascertain exact nature of the time difference.... A time of turmoil, social revolution, and, a time when the community could rely upon communication execs to maintain higher standard for public. Everyone from the dead to the stones could be heard......... This was a great time to be young, in a frat, have a sports car, and, meet other people with whom you could fail. Miserably, spectacular failed attempts often overlooked because of the time. The summer of love, destruction of our various reasons for living, loving and, beginning the fall from Grace... That's radar's story. We're sticking to it.
Erm... this song was not created until the 80s.
@@EmmaPeelman yep sorry typo error 👌🏼👍🏼
Phénoménale. Grandiose.
Nostalgic pictures rolling in mind. Not only music but a genius.
Masterpiece... one of the greatest of all
To my point of view this is one of the most beautiful composition in mankind music history !!!!!!!!!!
This is a serious and intensely moody song, atmospheric yet it's quite chilled all at the same time with a dramatic ending! which to me just shows the brilliance of the band to be able to make it all those things in one song! absolute brilliant! What a band they were eh! 🙂
✌💋🇮🇹
guiter,piano & drums...awesome.
beautiful song ... I think I heard it a thousand times ... and still not get tired!!! the guitar is fabulous ....
Obra prima, dentre tantas canções do Dire Straits! 🇧🇷
Wow, this brings back memories. 1986 Football Park Adelaide. Still the best concert I've ever been to!!!!
If only the world was like Mark Knopfler's music, it would be a wonderful place to live in
This is the ultimate comment on this trail Francesco
what, investigating a mystery of some sort and talking about it through song?
It would be as dark and mysterious as his music.
Spend a life in the tunnel of love? Oh yes please sir
who is on the piano?
Mark Knopfler got a divine inspiration when he produced this song!!
Never heard a better song in the history of pop music...
This album imo is their best lyrically, musically, and it’s not 10 8 minute songs either. Perfectly paced
I've been in deep waters, doing my own investigations, this song has always helped me to see the light. Power of music...without it I wouldn't be here anymore...
Watching Mark Knophler play that exquisite Chrome Dobro on the Brisbane leg of the Dire Straits - Brothers I Arms Tour will always be a highlight of my life.. Thank you Dire Straits for my most memorable concert ever. RESPECT. My love of music gained a huge head rush when I first heard you.
the guitar and the lyrics get me. amazing.
Mark Knopfler is an absolute genius 👏
A very unique song! One of Marks best! I remember trying to learn this song on the guitar. It was hard. Not the solos, but figuring out the chords and how to play them like he does. He has a very unique style in the way he plays the chords and adds single notes and riffs in between!
Agreed. His chord/riff schedule is very unique. I think that he doesn't use a pick and picks with his thumb is what makes him extraordinary. He isn't the only guy who plays without a pick but no one does it better.
Imagine that this song has been aired on MTV these days... God i love Dire Straits
When a song makes you want to read "The Long Goodbye", you better believe, it's a fantastic song!
En mi humilde opinión, la MEJOR banda de música contemporánea. Gracias, DIRE STRAITS, for ever,
Desde Gailicia, Spain, saludos a todos los Sultanes
Earphones on lying in bed and dire straights blasting in my ears pure heaven
from 3:45 till 5:30.... absolutely speechless!
.. for how many years I have been listening with constant delight... if someone didn't feel it from the first notes, don't listen anymore...
Always love this. Kind of reminds of Beethoven's moonlight. Not sure why,but just did.
