    Lyrics:
t’s a mystery to me - the game commences
for the usual fee - plus expenses
    confidential information - it’s in a diary
this is my investigation - it’s not a public inquiry
I go checking out the reports - digging up the dirt
you get to meet all sorts in this line of work
treachery and treason - there’s always an excuse for it
and when I find the reason I still can’t get used to it
And what have you got at the end of the day?
what have you got to take away?
a bottle of whiskey and a new set of lies
blinds on the window and a pain behind the eyes
Scarred for life - no compensation
    private investigation

You couldn't be more right. This is the reason that so many acts from the 60's & 70's can still tour for good money. Why? Because they are legitimate and not fake promoted and studio enhanced like the crap force fed on us today. There have always been shitty acts that got overly promoted but only real bands with real talent stand the test of time. Unfortunately there are a lot of good acts that are fairly recent who have real talent but don't get properly promoted because they don't have the right "IMAGE". BOLLOCKS!!!!

Spot on, brother. We need a revival to overthrow this industry which actually destroys creativity and uplifts cookie cutter shite! Thank goodness there is a good amount of the younger generation who latches on to the "older" music and realizes how much more quality was around. They are the hope for the future so we can be done with boy bands, Harry Styles and other rubbish and get back to real rock and real musicians.

heated. A few puffs of Colombia ganja, or Oklahoma home grown. Glad I grew up in 60s..... Less violent, better crops, needing some help from the man above in order to ascertain exact nature of the time difference.... A time of turmoil, social revolution, and, a time when the community could rely upon communication execs to maintain higher standard for public. Everyone from the dead to the stones could be heard......... This was a great time to be young, in a frat, have a sports car, and, meet other people with whom you could fail. Miserably, spectacular failed attempts often overlooked because of the time. The summer of love, destruction of our various reasons for living, loving and, beginning the fall from Grace... That's radar's story. We're sticking to it.

Masterpiece, I was a teen when I heard this the first time on fall 1982. Still now on my 60th: the melody, sounds that I hear from different positions as if I was in a concert hall, are amazing. You are the most clever artists.

The nothings in this track are as important as the somethings.
The instruments set the stage for your imagination to fill in the story.
    It's perfection.

one of my favourite Dire Straits pieces... very interesting how evocative and poignant the music gets considering how economical it is... brilliant and inspiring work...
i don't remember seeing the video before... it leaves me rather indifferent... songs this inherently cinematic provide their own imagery...

Just an observation: he is a right handed guitarist and yet he writes "My Investigation" with his left hand. If the video was flipped it would read backwards, so what's going on here? Is he ambidextrous?

Mark is left handed but he plays the guitar right handed. Some say this is the secret to his killer playing ! I think it is maybe because his first guitar was a right handed Hofner Super Solid V2, and maybe he found bending hard with his weaker hand.

Private Investigations is a great song, with good guitar playing and even some random xylophone playing included. The video is dark, the man spying on the woman through his blinds clearly makes her uncomfortable. But it isn’t dwelled on thankfully.

It's a mystery to me, the game commences
For the usual fee, plus expenses
    Confidential information, it's a diary
This is my investigation, it's not a public inquiry
I go checking out the reports, digging up the dirt
You get to meet all sorts in this line of work
Treachery and treason, there's always an excuse for it
And when I find the reason I still can't get used to it
And what have you got at the end of the day?
What have you got to take away?
A bottle of whiskey and a new set of lies
Blinds on the window and a pain behind the eyes
    Scarred for life, no compensation
    Private investigations
