This is the perfect song about longing. I listened to it in the back of my dad's car when I was a kid, longing to grow up and understand and feel how song described. As a young man, it described how I longed for the women that I loved and lost. And now I watch it and miss the young man I was, and what it felt like to be young, to be in love, and have my heart broken. It's so bittersweet - beautiful and sad, makes me nostalgic and also connected to each period of my life. It feels so personal, yet when I read all the comments here, I realise I'm just one of many that feels that way.
Petra Europe very well said. Word for word my thoughts😌 Such a beautiful song - a simple melody, interspersed with whimsical guitar licks, like little flights of fancy. The music light but the subject heavy. (I met my wife at 15 and had a weird thought that We’d end up together, but one of us was always in a relationship. It wasn’t until 23 that we were both free at the same time, and we married at 26.💟☮️
Is that your interpretation too? I just had a breakup that I felt would be the one ... and the lyrics seem to point in that direction for me too. The most obvious part would be "just that the time was wrong" since she currently has so much in her life that she had no time for a relationship. The music video points in the direction of them moving on rather than getting back together though- what you think about the songs lyrics?
The line "It was just that the time was wrong" gets me. So many of us must know that feeling of completely falling for someone, but not being able to do anything about it.
I always and still do love the line'I cant do anything, but I would do anything for you" . Being in a bad relationship, it was my fantasy to find someone who actually cared enough about me to say that.
This song holds more meaning for me than anyone could imagine. I was with my significant other for almost 30 years. We had separated, lived apart for a couple of years, still seeing each other almost everyday. By chance we ended up back together and it was so beautiful that we had a chance to fall in love all over again until after being 12 years in remission, he ended up with fatal brain cancer and was given not even 4 weeks to live. He graciously lived for over 5 more months and yet even being bed ridden and paralyzed on one side, my children and I were by his side. We all were blessed to have that time with him and he was so happy even considering the circumstances. He passed away and I was there for every moment including his last breath. There was a time long ago when he said to me... "You and me babe, how bout it? "... This song is so precious to me and I'll never forget those words. When this song appears in my feed, knowing I'm going to cry like a baby , I have no choice but to listen... Scott, you made my life complete. I miss you so much. Even though you've been gone for 2 and a half years already, it's fresh like it was yesterday. I'll forever hold our memories deep in my heart and remember your last breath you were still trying to say I love you even though you couldn't speak. I miss you so very much. Maybe one day we'll be together again. I'll forever be about you babe. Always and forever until we meet again my love... Thank you to whomever took the time to read this. Our love is forever and Romeo and juliet do truly exist. ♥️
Thank you for sharing such an amazing and deeply touching part of your life. Even though your story had an emotional impact on me, , it also echos how much I am in love with my better half, best friend, lover and wife. I am thankful every day for her choosing to share her life with me. I hope everyone who reads your story and my little reply, can take a moment to appreciate that someone is out there for all of us. If you found that someone, take a moment each day to let them know how much you care about them. Use any of the 5 love languages (yes it works) to convey your love. 💓 It makes a difference to them and makes you a better version of yourself, which also feels fantastic. 🤩 Give it a try if you don't believe me and see what happens. 😉
The perfect story of a long lost love, with the justification of failure being 'it was just that time was wrong'. There is a place for 'us', I truly hope.

Why are the rest of dire straits members so underappreciated, the bass in Sultans of Swing, the keyboards in the song Brothers in arms, the drums in this song and tunnel of love are all brilliant.
because most people dont even want to analyse the components of the music, if it sounds good, thats enough. Roses smell nice no-one cares about the protein structure of the chemical compound that makes the smell. Getting in too deep in the analysis often obstructs your appreciation of it.
one of my favourite songs. But my god this is the most literal video ever. It's like the director literally interpreted every word of the song on a low budget.
I agree love the song it’s older than me, I also remember my dad playing it when I was little. The video clip is a too literal though, it is such a good song a bit of mystery in the film clip would of made a whole lot better
When I was a kid, my father played this song in the car all the time. He died 5 years ago, it just makes me think of my childhood and life before it all got too complicated
This line “Juliet, when we made love you used to cry You said, "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die." I think the most wonderful thing is to think about that while listening to this songs . It's the situations that people face and try to deal with . I just can't live without music anymore
@@knojohn8787 Nope, you are right. Music is fundamental to the existence for some of us, and with modern technology there is no reason why you shouldn't be enjoying it for hours every day. It turns a bus journey or commute into a pleasure. For postmen and similar jobs there is music all day, and for anyone whose jobs were once solitary and boring there is now a huge world of your favourite music and the opportunity to get into music you may have thought was not to your taste. With so much time to listen, we can try anything. For those of us who've been enjoying music for 60 or 70 years we are now so lucky that we don't have to turn on a hifi and select a record; instead we can simply pop on the headphones, select one of thousands of albums and away we go, and the quality of sound can be extraordinarily good, in some cases to match the best hi-fi systems available. I really love your statement: 'I just can't live without music any more'. To people like us, life without music would be empty and colourless.
I have wondered that myself. These people are gifted, no question about it. There is somthing special in their brain that allows them to come up with the wonder which is these beautiful songs. I have played guitar for 50 years, and all the time I have spent, I could never come up with something like this. They are very special, gifted people that allows something like this to happen.
There’s something slightly magical about the fade out on this song. I’m 44 years old, but whenever I watch this now, by the time the song is fading out I am right back to being that 12 year old boy in the mid-80’s, watching it with the lights off in my bedroom on my small portable television, playing from a beat up old VHS player clunking away a pirated copy I recorded from VH1, and with my old CB radio crackling away from under my bunk-bed. It’s like a time-machine, yet timeless in itself.
As a young man I listen to this song and never knew what it was truly saying. As an older man who loved an lost I can now appreciate the song truly. I can lament the loss and the passion that burned to quickly or I can relish the fact I loved so deeply.
Mark exposes the faces and phases of grieving, grieving that grips and rips the heart. And the incessant bargaining to reattain that love comes only "through the bars of a rhyme."
This band will always give me good memories for my dad who passed.. I will always listen to these songs and remember you dad.. your were a one off.. love ❤️ you. Big man ❤❤❤

I grew up in Hungary, Central Europe, in the 90's that was post-communist, expecting a lot from America and itself at the end of the cold war. I grew up on this song blasting from my grandad's radio while I played football with my cousin in the yard, surrounded by the flowers my grandma planted. It was such a special time. We thought everything was possible and we only needed to reach for the sky. I'm living in the US now, but no feeling is as sweet as dreaming away in 90's Hungary, thinking that the world was my oyster.

I’m 21 and grew up listening to bits and pieces of Dire Straits from my parents and I don’t know why I was always so drawn to this song. Now that I’m older I just think it’s one of the most fantastic songs. It’s so romantic and the end gives me shivers every time (4:42). So much appreciation for this song! What a masterpiece!
Same with me. My dad used to get wasted and listen to dire straits on full blast. I eventually ended up listening to it by myself and till this day it still sounds amazing
I am a guitarist and love to jam over Dire Straits tracks. When the final instrumental part begins I stop playing and listen to this wonderful piece of music. It has been so for 30 years
Read some morons critique of this song and video and his description of the dancer at the end was "a 'sexualized' version of Elaine Benis"... I'm sure his version of twerking would be the answer for him... I'd like to know who that dancer is because she had the attention of every straight male in high school... And she didn't have to be half naked like they do today to get recognition...
I love the minimalist themes of these early Dire Straits videos, This one, Skateaway and Tunnel of Love all get the point across without overwhelming you with visuals. They let the lyrics come through and tell the story.. Magic stuff....
As many have have stated... This was a powerful song when I was mid teens. From Glasgow, I knew of Mark, as I was learning guitar at the time.. This was one of ‘those’ songs that enduringly relate to an era of ones life... In ‘82 it was a moving moment in time for me. First love, appreciation of music in general and guitar and song writing abilities. Thing started to make sense to me.. my ‘Juliet’ lasted 4 years, and has always had a special place in my heart.. even to this day I think “the time was wrong”.. I thank Mark Knopfler for his talent, and the memories his music helps keeps alive..

The secret isn't no smartphone or Internet. The secret is YOU WERE YOUNG.
@@squamish4244 The internet, despite its many helping ways, has detracted from the good stuff in life. Nothing now is appreciated as everything is availabel on tap...it encourages less creativity, more depression, poor attitudes, and general mental illness as evidenced by 95% of twitter. In the older days you were friends with people around you, you were limited in what you heard so would obsess over songs like this for montsh and years on vynl or cassette. I could go on...its certainly not just about being young.
5:03...kills me every time.
Why are the rest of dire straits members so underappreciated, the bass in Sultans of Swing, the keyboards in the song Brothers in arms, the drums in this song and tunnel of love are all brilliant.
Fun fact: many of bruce springsteen's E street band were playing on the tunnel of love album, including this song.
@@mrgilbe1 You mean the Making Movies Album?
@@stevestefanick9886 Yes he does, the keyboard player from the E street band, Roy Bittan, played on Romeo & Juliet and Tunnel of Love etc.
the drummer in sultans of swing (alchemy live) is the most amazing ive ever heard
because most people dont even want to analyse the components of the music, if it sounds good, thats enough. Roses smell nice no-one cares about the protein structure of the chemical compound that makes the smell. Getting in too deep in the analysis often obstructs your appreciation of it.
Great song makes you feel either great or depressed but that’s probably what it’s meant to do. Matt from Australia 🇦🇺
Great guitarist. Great songwriter. Great storyteller.
Juliet says, "Hey, it's Romeo, you nearly gave me a heart attack" 💯♾🎶💘Always
"Hey La - my Boyfriend's back" :o)
@@rozatoldi5555 my favorite verse of the entire song..😊
Beautiful song. It speaks to me completely.
After so many years, still absolutely the best love song ever....
" You said 'I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die' "
“Can’t do anything except be in love with you”, masterpiece, nothing to add but said everything. Just beautiful 🤩
One of my favourite songs for 40 years. Gets better and better. I miss Dire Straits
I'm 25 and it's been my favourite song since 19.
Ye
I love them too❤
❤❤❤😂😂🎉🎉
Yes
Still a masterpiece January 2025
Always and forever will be.
"All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme " What a great line.
Thank you! I never understood that line. I thought it was about rain.
My favorite one too but I also like I'd do the stars with you anytime
All I do is kiss you through the bars of Orion.
Just said that to my mrs before I read your comment 👌👍
Ah shit, Im always singing Orion. He is singing about the stars the line before, so it made sense in my head. XD
one of my favourite songs. But my god this is the most literal video ever. It's like the director literally interpreted every word of the song on a low budget.
Yes literal. I've never seen another video like it.
I agree love the song it’s older than me, I also remember my dad playing it when I was little. The video clip is a too literal though, it is such a good song a bit of mystery in the film clip would of made a whole lot better
Exactly my thoughts. Almost like Bollywood haha. What a song though.
I absolutely love this video actually
Yeah, I know. Pity. Imagine the vide they COULD have made!
When I was a kid, my father played this song in the car all the time. He died 5 years ago, it just makes me think of my childhood and life before it all got too complicated
Chin up chap!
me to rip dad
Same 🥲🤲
it will never be aged never be old-fashioned, it is a masterpiece.. The best band ever!
Questa musica non ha età è sempre attuale e speciale, bravissimi
This line “Juliet, when we made love you used to cry
You said, "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die." It gives me the chills every time I hear it, cuz it’s just so fking beautiful, represents how crazily in love you can be with someone.
The lyrics of this songs are just fucking beautiful!!
Yup and then it all turns to shit.... Been there so many times.
@@ozymandias7940 Yep. Going through the remnants of that now. This song kills me, but I love it. Kinda like love itself
@@julieknox1682 Hey, sorry to hear that. You're probably sick of hearing this, but it does get easier. Keep your chin up, soldier on, one day at a time. 🙂
I still feel the same x
Then it turns out she's a liar!
Knopfler at his understated best. A true gem of a song. Magical !
I was born in 1979 and my Dad was a huge Dire Straits fan.
Mark Knopfler will always be a legend in our house ❤
I was also born in 79 and my dad also was a huge Dire Straits fan. Listening to this music really brings back memories of my childhood.
Without a Doubt🎸🎸🎸🎸👍👍
Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler Brother In Arms~~wore it out, bought another and wore it out too. I love this song. Touches my soul. ❤
I love you Romeo (Nathan A) from the actual Juliet
This song is so clever and beautiful, how on earth does the human mind devise something so incredibly wonderful?
I think the most wonderful thing is to think about that while listening to this songs . It's the situations that people face and try to deal with . I just can't live without music anymore
Its up there with Shelter from the Storm and Tangled Up in Blue by Bob Dylan for storytelling
Simply, through their personal experiences. Creative people tend to be more sensitive, so when love is lost, it affects them deeply.
I love reading memories like yours
As a young man I listen to this song and never knew what it was truly saying. As an older man who loved an lost I can now appreciate the song truly. I can lament the loss and the passion that burned to quickly or I can relish the fact I loved so deeply.
Mark exposes the faces and phases of grieving, grieving that grips and rips the heart. And the incessant bargaining to reattain that love comes only "through the bars of a rhyme."
The yearning in the guitar bit right after , You and me babe. How about it?❤
Flawless. The best pop love song of the past 40-plus years.
Agreed 💯
1:57 The "fall for chains of silver / gold" part with that piano hitting hard in between is goose bumps pure.
Hi would love to know what you think of this cover my 17 year old grandson did when he was 15 ua-cam.com/video/PENye5es74Q/v-deo.html
15 years later and this still gets me in the heart. I wish the time had not been wrong... 😭
You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin. Now you just say "oh yeah Romeo, I used to have a scene with him".
This band will always give me good memories for my dad who passed.. I will always listen to these songs and remember you dad.. your were a one off.. love ❤️ you. Big man ❤❤❤

There are many, many great Dire Straits songs. Hands down this is in the top 5. Brings me back to those care free days.
Peace and Progress
Peace and Progress to you also.
Two hours into 2022 and I’m crying at beauty and hope that this song brings.

Mark's vocals are so gorgeous. So much emotion in this song.

Great song by a great group.
All i could do was love you through the bars of a rhyme ❤❤❤😢
Canzoni così ora sono solo un sogno ora esiste solo il peggio del peggio😢
I was born in 1979, I remember my Dad playing these in the car. Marvellous ❤
Yes but dire straits are english
@@jenniferlaughlin47 Duuuuh.... I know. I'm reminiscing of the times I listened to Dire Straits in HU as a child. And now I live in the US for the moment. No correlation with DS beimg English or not :D
@@andreamolnar5333To us 👉 🇬🇧 it matters. Don't be so rude.
@@steffanhoffmann Really? You know, me and my husband worked and lived in England before we eventually moved to the US. He always said it was good riddance, because you Brits froze him out. And he was working in the forefront of your scientific research and development. As for me, moving away broke my heart and I've been missing England desperately ever since. Thank you for showing me my husband had a valid point. I'll be sure to reconsider. 😉
@@steffanhoffmann Oh and: Mark and David knopfler are half-Hungarian. Just so you know.
One of the very best, Mark Knopfler. What more needs to be said.
"The dice was loaded from the start."
Indeed it was.
This song is the anthem of my school sweet heart break up and aftermath. Such sweet memories and regrets. I've lived a whole life after that... This song is like a time machine and all I will say is I still yearn for her. Just don't tell anyone
Yeah
"I can't do a love song, the way it's meant to be"
Well that was a lie
Lol
They did a damn fine job..
It's Not always easy to do a love song. But do something ! Keep trying
Did you miss a letter "f" in your last word...
Smartass
I feel much better now. Thanks Dire Straits, you took me back to a point in time when things were cool.
One of my absolute favorite songs in high school & now! Takes me right back there to a particular guy I was completely in love with..wonder where he is now?Song gives me goosebumps ❤️
Smooth
It’s me !
me too, takes me back 43 years
I’m 21 and grew up listening to bits and pieces of Dire Straits from my parents and I don’t know why I was always so drawn to this song. Now that I’m older I just think it’s one of the most fantastic songs. It’s so romantic and the end gives me shivers every time (4:42). So much appreciation for this song! What a masterpiece!
Holly Best tune
Can I copy and paste this comment hahaha
Holly. Very
Leo Gowing hay
Same with me. My dad used to get wasted and listen to dire straits on full blast. I eventually ended up listening to it by myself and till this day it still sounds amazing
If you don’t get goosebumps listening to this song then you are missing a soul
У Моей Наташки должны быть, а так только я в гавно попадаю))))
Не Мурашки, значит я Мужик)))
Ok,my daughter is officially missing a soul.
Oh piss off, dude! Like srsly.
Great song, stupid video.
I am a guitarist and love to jam over Dire Straits tracks. When the final instrumental part begins I stop playing and listen to this wonderful piece of music. It has been so for 30 years
Amo Dire Straits !
The part at 4:32 sends chills down my spine. So simple yet so wonderful 💜
I like 4:48-5:52.
Straordinaria canzone. Grandi Dire Straits
One of the greatest songs ever
I love the minimalist themes of these early Dire Straits videos, This one, Skateaway and Tunnel of Love all get the point across without overwhelming you with visuals. They let the lyrics come through and tell the story.. Magic stuff....
@Markroberts 1301 My favorite album side of all time.
I thank Mark Knopfler for his talent, and the memories his music helps keeps alive..
released 43 years ago and still sounds amazing now as it did back then
It came out in 1979
love you mark
I love this song! It breaks my heart every time I hear it but I love It still. The words and music tell a beautiful sad story.
Sadly I've only two beers left tonight, I wish I had an endless supply so I could continue my aural enjoyment . Keep safe, enjoy life and love one another.
