I just bought the 2020 MacBook Air with M1 for $749 and it has a real decent build. It was on sale on Amazon and I decided to buy it right then and there. This is my very first Apple product and I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase. I still like my Asus CX5601 but I wanted a laptop to have as a backup. I bought the Asus after watching your review of it and I couldn't be more pleased with that laptop as well. Thank you for such informative reviews on these Chromebooks. I really appreciate them.

I'm still using a spin 713 the one with the thunderbolt ports. I think I paid around $600 and still use it, no desire to upgrade yet. I have no plans to upgrade yet until a 713 and a steam deck have a baby. That to me would be worth $1,000. A Chromebook with a terabyte of storage, 16 gigs of RAM, a current i5, The integrated graphics card out of a steam deck, quad HD, 400+ nits, with a compartmentalized steam OS pre-installed. Someone needs to make this happen!

I was able to purchase the Acer Spin 714 at BestBuy for $470 during their Black Friday sale. Same hardware config 8GB/256GB but no docked stylus. I'm good with that. No problems with the trackpad, screen is beautiful, keyboard is wonderful. Quickly installed the Linux container and everything works great. I have zero complaints. Given the price I paid, I cannot imagine a nicer Chromebook. Highly recommended, but watch for the sale price opportunities.

Great video! I bought the previous Acer Chromebook Spin 714 with the i5 processor (8gb, 256). It's been great so far and I have had no issues. It's super fast and It was cheaper than this new one obviously; it didn't come with a stylus or fingerprint scanner, but it's awesome. On this new one, the stylus and fingerprint scanner is nice, but I don't see much of a big difference except for the upgrade to i7. Thanks for the video!

This is what Chromebook Plus is for, by solidifying what should be expected as the bare minimum for a mid-range device; we can actually get high end devices with specs and quality that live up to their price, and everyone gets a better experience across the board. As for this device, 16gb of ram would have been nice to see; hopefully it becomes standard at this price point, and I hope we see less of the omission of an SD card slot (that's a make or break for me, I need that lol.)

I feel like there are a few gimmicks that a few people use that chromebooks don't really need such as a stylus with a chromebook. The best implementation is either done with a tablet or the samsung note and last i checked the note was discontinued, now back to the tablet a laptop is just not a tablet just make a better android tablet that's equivalent to the ipad, As for the 360 hinge again really a few people are going to flip the device and use it in that form factor, just make a good or better laptop stop the gimmicks. Save people the money and improve on it back to back.

Speakers on the 713 are terrible, 714 may be slightly better but still crap. 8GBs of RAM for 1000 bucks is laughable. Upgrade a Framework to 64GBs for a couple hundred bucks more and you can fix/upgrade it indefinitely. You should be pushing the Framework approach more often at this price point.

Despite all the 'Chromebooks can edit videos' comments on the web, I'm still struggling to make a simple video production of a short video dropped in Google Photos. Many online editors don't even link directly with Google Photos or let you import from there. Google photos itself doesn't have an edit option, despite online saying it does. What are you using to make your UA-cam videos, assuming you're using a Chromebook, please?

  • @ArcaneCoyote

I'm not too excited by this device, but in the future I do hope that manufacturers continue to produce higher-tier Chromebooks; especially when Meteor Lake and Strix Point come out.
Integrated graphics are starting to get pretty decent, and I'm so eager for the day we see these in Chromebooks and native gaming will actually be possible; especially after the dGPU projects got canned. Borealis recently entered the Stable channel too, so I'm hoping by this time next year we'll have an actual Steam experience on a Chromebook.

I have an Acer Spin 513 Chromebook with the Kompanio 1380 arm processor with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB, and now its running Chrome OS 64-bit with Android 11 it has impressive performance. It was also £100 off the normal retail price, and hence also excellent value for money. I have always been interested in the Acer Spin 714 Chromebook, but I wouldn't buy any Intel core i7 Chromebook without 16 GB RAM. I have noticed that Acer high end Chromebooks have recently been topping out at 8 GB RAM which for me makes these devices poor value for money and doesn't stack up with the value they seem to offer at the low to mid-range Chromebook level. I hope Acer sought themselves out otherwise they will have one less customer.

Robbie, for a thousand bucks that touchscreen had damn well better be sensitive to every touch without jabbing it. And as others have pointed out, 8 GB of RAM for a grand? Ridiculous. We just picked up the 516 GE with 16 GB of RAM for $600 on Amazon. And the i5 is plenty fast. I don't know what manufacturers are thinking with their inconsistent pricing and specs. Take a user who isn't familiar with all of the issues like dim vs bright screens and inconsistent specs/pricing/model numbers, and it's no wonder that a lot of people are in a state of total confusion when it comes to choosing a Chromebook.
And the standard that these devices should be compared to vis-a-vis the keyboard, trackpad, and internals are devices like the Pixelbook Go. I've been using one for the past two years, and if there were anything out there with comparable specs at a similar price point, we would pick it up in a heartbeat.
You even mentioned the Pixelbook Go's speakers. Well, it was released FIVE years ago, and it still blows away many, if not most, of the new devices.

    AFTER ALL OF THESE YEARS...
Google still can't figure out a simple way to allow consumers to use their keyboards and mice like they can with a PC.
Such a shame because it's such a great operating system. .
Yet another example of something that Google just doesn't give a s*** about, but acts like they do
