I have been using this for several months. And it is completely worth it. Lumafusion runs great on it. It's just a great machine all the way around. For my second chromebook (1st being Lenovo duet) this is leagues better. So happy I bought it. It has literally replaced my msi laptop for everything. The only thing missing is a micro SD card slot. Just my opinion but that could have made it perfect. A screen protector would be a nice add on.
9-2-2023 After 3 months of daily use my left speaker popped and went out. Right works but has some popping. Speakers seem to be the absolute weakest points on chromebooks in general. I say this because the speakers on my original duet and duet 3 the speakers did the same thing before the went out completely.

@douglaskroski3658 I get around 9 to 10 hours of battery life. But unfortunately, as of last night, my left speaker went out. Don't know why. Just started popping after 3 months of use and then nothing.

I really like this Chromebook. If it had 16gb of ram and more storage or an SD card slot at the same price point it would be an instant buy. When Steam finally shows up a lot more storage is going to be needed unless you want to use an external drive to download your games on to. One Call of Duty game can be up to 100gb.

Only 8gb ram is a massive oversight on Acer's part. Would not have been difficult or expensive to add an extra 8gb of ram, which would have made this the ultimate chromebook. Big miss.

I've had the 713 from 2-3 years ago. It's a workhorse for all the Google stuff I do use. I'm not sure I would upgrade to this, unless they had a pen insert (they once had that).
Still, it's a great laptop. My 713 has survived two children and lots of transfers from work station to work station. This sounds like it will do the same!

Dude trust me without the 3:2 ratio you'll be unhappy. I'm still rocking my 2021 713 and use it hardcore for dev and cloud engineering work, and it's easily one of the best computers I've owned outside of the speakers. Once you have a 3:2 ratio it hurts to go back.

I've used Chrome devices since the beginning. I love them and switch people to them whenever I can. I've owned the 714 since it came out. But one thing has always bothered me. The sound is not really loud enough without a 3rd party app or a Bluetooth speaker. With a Bluetooth speaker at half volume everything is fine. But using the internal speakers at full volume the sound is lackluster and dim. This seems to be the same for HP, Samsung, Acer and Asus.

I wish we’d get out of the barely HD ghetto with these devices. We really need WQHD as a default to fit enough on a 14” screen.

While I have no doubt this is a nice Chromebook, I own 2 Spin 713s, and would not upgrade because of the lesser screen on the 714. It maks no sense that they downgraded the screen on the 714 whatsoever. Also the processor on the 713 is more that up to the task for everything I need it to do.

Thanks for another great review Robbie 👍
Can I add a REQUEST for future Acer Spin (& other Chromebook) reviews - which is to include mention of external monitor support please.
Following your great review of the Acer Spin 513 last year, I bought one for an absolute steal here in the UK (I think the store mixed up the model number with it's predecessor) - and I absolutely love it. However although Mediatek state that the Kompanio 1380 can support multiple 4K displays, I have been unable to confirm whether the 513's ports support DP v1.2 (4K30) or v1.4 (4K60) ?
One question regarding this latest Spin 714 - is how quiet and cool does it run ?
As one of the best things about my ARM-powered 513 is it is TOTALLY silent (no fan) and mostly cold - even though I regularly have 5 Desktops (with 20+ tabs) on the go.
P.S. I am going to have a look at the Capcut Video Editor - as that is just about the only thing I have not tried doing yet on my Spin 513.
Thanks again, and keep up the great work....👏

I have an 713 (11th gen i5, 8GiB) that I love (aside from the poor audio). I've been wanting to buy a new one for my wife, and I've watched the 714 and now the 714 refresh, both with radically inferior screens. It's not just the aspect ratio which is not as nice, but also the HD-ish resolution is not good compared the the UHD of the 713's. Honestly, I don't get how they could have "nailed it" when the product has gone nowhere for a couple of years now. Yes, the processor is faster (not that important to most Chromebook activities) and it's a bit thinner, but meh. I'll stay on the sidelines awhile longer.

Kinda wish it had a micro-sd slot. That is always nice to have. I'll be upgrading my Asus CM34 to this in a couple of days and noticed I'd be giving up the micro-sd slot for the faster processor and more storage. A fair trade-off but would still preferred to have kept the micro-sd slot.

Great video thanks for sharing, shame that there isn't a 16GB memory model , as that could have well been my next chromebook but might be hard to source one here in the uk. My daily work pushes the 8GB of memory of my Asus CX5400, it's not cpu bound but memory - Speakers :- I've been spoilt with my Google Pixelbook go which makes video and movie watching just great and again they beat the CX5400 so how does the Acer Spin compare with the Pixel Speakers - I think you've commented on how good they were in the past ?

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 11 місяців тому +2

I am not sure what Chrome does with all the RAM on my Chromebooks, but 16GB is recommended if you have 10+ tabs open with other apps. I am not a fan of the "performance mode" that sleeps tabs; I prefer just to switch and go. For that reason I am still using my Pixelbook Go with 16GB of RAM, but as with RAM on Chrome, that nearly fills up, but no issues with reloads or decompressed tabs. In the UK finding a great 16GB Chromebook is not as easy as it should be in 2023.

I just removed the write protection from my Chromebook, flashed a proper bootloader, and installed NixOS. Not only is it faster than ChromeOS ever was on it, but it's also more functional. Had it been a new Chromebook with a decent CPU and more RAM, I don't think the urge to switch would have been as strong.

I've had the 7:13 I think that was the 2021 model and then I have the 714 which is last year's model so the 2022 and I do have to say it was funny when I put them side to side people like the taller aspect ratio but in direct comparison the bezels on the 713 are huge now I'm saying this because when I put it right side by side so it's supposed to be a taller aspect ratio right okay it's the same damn size the height so then when I check the width I'm not talking about the laptop I'm talking about the actual screens I guess I should take a little measuring tape and measure them but yes the 714 is wider which is what I like more The 3x2 aspect ratio is great I guess if you're writing a paper or something I don't know or reading a book but I don't like it It was good for Excel charts but still I don't like it I'm just used to the wider aspect ratio anyways I don't care what anyone tells you but the battery life on these is pretty just okay so I get anywhere from on the 713 it's about 6 hours around there and that's just watching UA-cam browsing so nothing crazy I don't game so that doesn't matter to me I don't know to me battery life on both of these are just okay next up is the screen the 7:13 screen is beautiful I love it it's incredible it's not even an OLED so that's how you know it's good no for the 7:14 to be honest I just unless I'm looking at a high definition photo or something I don't know You won't tell the difference from browsing or watching UA-cam or whatever You just can't really tell the difference to my eyes I don't know they're both incredible I just prefer the aspect ratio of the 7:14 the truck pad is a little smaller which is okay because I just use a mouse anyway I barely use a truck bad do know that they did take out the stylus on this new 714 which is whatever I don't really actually use stylus unless I want to draw something but that's not that often and finally the speakers are terrible in both so get a Bluetooth speaker next up the cameras on the 713 the camera is terrible I mean bad I have to try video conferences on something else because I tried video conferencing but with Instagram so just a video call and it was it was okay but as soon as I switched over to my Pixel 4A which is I know it's a phone they said it was a lot better the quality I don't get it so I switched from the 714 to my Pixel 4a for you know a video call and they said the quality was way better so I don't know what's going on there next up so for the camera from the 7:13 to the 7:14 the 7:13 has a 720p camera which is terrible the 714 has a 1080p camera which is okay like maybe like a 6.5 out of 10 like it's good enough for video calls I believe but my friends just saw a notice will different maybe I just have to use a Google app so I can get the most out of it so that that might help I'll test it again but if I'm being honest with everybody if you're just a regular person I recommend just getting regular Chromebook like a 300s 200 prices and never buy the price tag the MSRP always wait for sales like for example I got both of my Acers for around $500 and they were both listed at $6.99 and 649 or something like that so don't buy MSRP unless you're dumb then okay honestly Chromebooks are just great The cheaper ones work pretty well The cheaper ones work pretty well so I would actually just recommend the Lenovo 314 and that is a great laptop The one with the media tech companion disc I mean sorry the chip That's a good one supposed to be better with battery life so the lower power of Chromebooks just you know make it last far longer than these Intel powered ones and I just prefer that because I'm not doing anything heavy or crazy on my Chromebook If you need something with more power though well get something more power If you're a person who games on a laptop you're a loser but you know that's up to you that's your fault your choice whatever I don't care You know you want to console laptops have more power or whatever but I don't know man I just know that you got to spend your life doing other things man instead of being a lose a loser I'm just trolling at this point but everything else prior to the trolling is legit Chromebooks are great I think they're better than tablets because they're just fast they have a lot more to work with they're really cool it's pretty much Android tablet but with additional features and it runs very well if you want a game on a Chromebook I have heard what is it the streaming services do very well but you know that's everything because they're streaming so you don't really need much so if you want to stream on a Chromebook that's great but I would just recommend streaming on a TV using you know Apple or or what's that the Xbox game pass I don't know there's a bunch of crap you could do now it's a stream so anything's really good honestly If you're doing streaming

@@nishiki393 Okay. I do more research than you must think I do. And that has nothing to do with my question which actually is a form of research. How about just answering the question? Does the new 714 Chromebook speakers crackle like last year‘s? Which by the way the 2021 version of the 713 also crackled. I’ve had to give up on Acer’s 700 series Chromebook’s because the speakers always crackle and pop. And, I know this from doing a lot of research.

Not had much use of it yet but first thoughts are I don't like the keyboard as much (C434 keyboard for me is the absolute best keyboard I've ever used), speakers don't seem as good either.
But love the build, and the stylus looks like it could be a great addition.

Chrome OS has no desktop, you have to go down to the bar and select every time. That's annoying as hell. You can't run heavy Windows apps. These laptops never come with a numeric keypad.
For 699 you are having a laugh. I can get a fully fledged OS with a bigger 16" screen and better everything else which is much better for photo editing.
I can tell you now. Slick, smooth talking reviewers will mislead you. It's happened to me three times. Never again.

For anyone considering getting this Chromebook feel free to message me or reply to this comment they are depending on what you need them for they're incredible but you don't really need this much power if you're going to be using a Chromebook anyway they're great I love Chromebooks because they're lightweight I had windows laptop and those things just I don't know they're clunky they chug and chug they just what's the same specs on a Chromebook you could just do a lot more and it'll be a lot faster and would lower specs on a Chromebook you could do a whole lot more you know and it's just going to be faster no wait sorry with with lower specs on a Chromebook you could probably do the same as a i3 processor they're great You know you can even have a what an end 4000 and 5,000 chit and it'll still be better than a freaking i3 on a Windows laptop because they're just too they have too much crap
