SOOOO helpful. I was overwhelmed when I opened the Mac site to decide on which model to purchase and in less than 20 minutes, you made my decision crystal clear--MacBook Air M3 with 16 MB minimum and a GAN charger. Thanks so much.
Thanks for the lineup review and recommendations. I purchased a refurb'd M1 Pro MBP 14 (16GB/1TB) last July and for me it is the perfect travel device. Regarding external storage, I picked up a trick several years ago when I transitioned (mostly) from Windows. I format the drives with exFAT so that I can read and write to them from either my Macs or my Windows gaming computer.

M1 air refurbished through apple with 16GB memory and 512GB SSD is $1099 which I was considering but I ended up going with open box good condition base M1 Air Gold from Best Buy for $605. It's in perfect condition and I'm only using this for taxes, typing long emails, Figma in browser, making invitations for parties and light stuff I don't want to use my iPad on and it's been amazing. I use my company issued laptop 16" M2 Max with 64GB memory for engineering work and that thing is way too overpowered and heavy for what I do in my personal life. Great content!
I don’t wish to be the bearer of bad news, but… I have an M1 Air 5 iPad. It’s plagued with issues, especially after the most recent 17.4.1 update, in my case; Google: M1 iPad / MacBook not charging after 17.4.1. Presently, my device no longer charges without being restarted. I understand, this being Apple’s first foray into designing their own in-house chip, which also has an unpatchable design flaw, which will eventually be exploited, but it’s faulty and every subsequent patch appears to come with more issues. My advise, avoid the M1, if at all possible, no matter how tempting…
I worked on M1 Macbook Air for almost 4 years, and NO ISSUES AT ALL. Incredible machine. So it's likely that somwthing wrong with your Ipad specifically, or with IPad OS (there were news that latest OS updates for Ipads could hurt the devices) But anyway - it has nothing to do with M1 chip.
Personally, before watching this video, I purchased a refurbished 15 inch base model M2 Air from Apple with only 6 battery cycles for $1019 about 2 wks ago. I only use my notebook for simple browing, UA-cam, reading, etc. Essentially the lightest use case possible for most people and I wanted a larger screen for viewing which was why I didn't opt for the cheaper m1 Air or the 13 inch m2. I think for people like me, this is a perfect choice! The battery life, display size and brightness, and speakers are beyond great for regular usage
This review was awesome! I think you nailed it exactly. I too have had many MacBooks and can totally back up everything you said. Glad I found you. Looking forward to more videos.
I have used both the M1 MBA 13 inch from my previous workplace and had personally bought the M2 MBA 13 inch a month ago, and I'm loving the portability of either laptops. The M2 MBA is an absolute beast and I'm loving the Midnight Color and design despite the fingerprints. I totally agree with your opinions! I totally believe MBP is the way to go, but portability and cost-wise, MBA is a very reliable machine to be used for a good couple of years. .
@@bhawanigurung9913 if screen real estate is your main deciding factor, then the 15 inch would do wonders for you. But if weight is, the 13.6 inch is actually kinda the best of both worlds!
Thank you a really useful breakdown guide on the MacBook range, I really wanted the Air for the lightness but have gone for the 16” M3 Max 64GB Ram for the speed and extra ports, it severely made me broke, but it just means I got to get some more £££ in and hopefully with a faster machine I will!
@@Mmacrossfirekenaiit'll still use swap from SSD even if there's is free RAM. This was shown in another review where there was 16GB RAM and about 8GB free. What are you using it for? 64GB is about a LOT of RAM. Probably 3x more than most people will ever need
Thank you for the breakdown! My MacBook starting to sputter and beach ball more often so I'm in the market for new! I will go with the pro at the top of line
I have M1 Air with 8GB memory and 512GB SSD, and keep changing my mind because I am also high school student, who uses lightroom, photoshop, and blender. This is why I keep changing my mind. The price difference between M3 Air 15 and 14 inch m3 with 16GB is close. What should I choose? Should I go for the long run or just upgrade whenever I need to?
I really liked this video!! I’m planning to buy a 13inch MBA with 16GB Ram and 512GB SSD. I’m going to buy it tomorrow but I am still contemplating whether I should save money and go for the 256GB storage and buy an external SSD. I plan to use this device for a long time so I’m not confident 256GB will do. Do you have any thoughts or advice? Thank you!
thank you for sharing. your video is very helpful. I was in the process of buying a MacBook Pro replacement of my 10-year-old dated and broken one, and I ended up bought the basic 16" M3 Macbook Pro with 18/512 from Amazon for $1999 which is $500 cheaper than Apple Store.
Thanks Jimmy! I've had a 15in MacBook Pro for about 10 years and want to upgrade. I got the 14in MBP and its magnificent. It is smaller and and takes some getting used to. I'll likely keep it for traveling and mobility purposes. I still have the aging 15in. And, i'm still tempted to get the 16in, but that might be excessive. Have you found that you got used to the 14in MBP after using it for a while if you may have used larger Macbooks? Much appreciated!
I have the 16” M1 Pro for corporate work and M2 13” air for personal use/side gigs. Wanted a bigger screen for personal use and bought the 14” M3 MacBook Pro then returned it (felt bulky in the hand and screen/palmrest was too small) and ended up keeping my M2 13” air. Just bought the M3 15” air yesterday and I have to say this is my favorite. Form factor and screen size is unbeatable. I have to say I am more comfortable working on it, having a bigger screen and using it for productivity, marketing work and online businesses.
Is the 15” air a perfect one? Was thinking to get 14” m3pro, i have similar task like your but have to goto university too, idk should i go for for 14”m3pro or 15”air m3 would be good even for future like 3/5 years?
OK so that was an extremely helpful tutorial. I wrote all the tips down but I did not hear which one might be best for gaming and school work for a teenager. Which one supports gaming well enough? I know o need at least 16 GB of Ram or should I go higher on the RAM? Thank you.
Hey jimmy, I'm waiting for the M4s. But if I had to go for a Macbook Pro right now, which one do you think is the best? My works include: Researching, script writing, voice over, Video editing, etc (basically content creation). The videos might be 20~30 mins in length, sometimes even more (worst case scenario) and there would be a lot of graphics work (After effects). Will the 16 Inch M3 Pro Macbook Pro (18/512) be enough for me or should I go with the 16 Inch M3 Max Macbook Pro (36/1TB)?
I'm still debating what to buy. I currently are running 3x 27" on the latest intel mac mini, which is so laggy with my work. I'm in crypto so how my screens look like is 1 with only telegram and other 2 with multille browser tabs, at least 20 up to 40, and multiple google sheets. I also have an old 2015 macbook pro 15, so my thought was to swap both for 1 good macbook. Now to run my 3 screens i would need the m3 max chip what seems overkill for my day2day work. So i'm swapping 3 screens for 1 super ultrawide. Which macbook would recommend now? The macbook air m3 16gb or do i still need a better performer like the macbook pro m3 pro because of the MANY open tabs??
Air. I have the MBP 16GB and I do all of that and more with the Pro in power saving mode. I always have a coding application, browsers with multiple tabs, PDFs, a Database management software open, and it works just fine. My buddy has an M2 air with 8GB and does the same thing as me with no issues.
I heard there isn’t much difference between the M2 and M3. I need the big 16 inch for photo and video editing but struggle deciding between the M2 and M3 MacBook Pro. Any advice would be appreciated. 😊
I got a m1 air for 450$ on eBay hell of a deal and works perfectly. If I trade it back to apple on a new one it’s worth 445 so not really out anything when I upgrade to a pro
No one talk about the speakers much but the MBP M3 speakers are much better for content consumers than the Air and has a better screen. Sure you can use a Bluetooth speaker but is something else to carry around. I do some image editing on my M3 it does fine. Knowing what I know now I probably would have gotten the M3 Pro for future proofing.
I just upgraded to an M3 pro MacBook pro with 512 SSD and 18gb ram. I came from a 2020 intel i5 MacBook pro with 512 SSD and 16gb of ram. And WOW the performance and battery life boost!!! What a fabulous upgrade.
@@JimmyTriesWorldyou dont think you push it editing these videos? I am debating on getting the 14 m3 max or the m3 pro with adding 32 gb 🤔 there’s some good deals
I'm so conflicted. I currently use my MacBook Pro 2019, 2.4ghz quad core intel i5, 16gb ram, 256gb ssd for a lot of writing. But I also use it for the odd photo edit (on photoshop) for UA-cam thumbnails and iMovie for short video edits. I've been ready to upgrade for a few months but not sure if I want to spend almost £2k on a Macbook Pro M3 on the refurbished store. I like the look of the M3 Macbook Air with 16gb ram (would even bump it to 24gb if I find one on refurbished story) and 512gb SSD as they seem better value for money. But would that be a good fit for me or would it struggle with the tasks I listed above? Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Thanks for saving me from reading through the current lineup for a replacement for my 2015 15" MBP. I will probably buy an M3 14" 16 GB ram and 1 TB SSD.
Good overview and great suggestions. I edit 60-300 megapixel images using Lightroom and Photoshop. Often layered using HDR, focus stacking, or stitched for panoramas. I currently use a 14” M1 Max with 64GB memory and 4G internal disk with a 4K display. It is a very capable most 60 megapixel tasks, but bogs down for very large images and some tasks, such as AI denoising, and bokeh blurring. I often check memory pressure and it is an extreme rarity I have memory pressure. I do, however, often see all 10 CPUs close to 100% utilization, even on simple things like import, export, and building of previews. Graphics is almost never more than 50%. Part of the problem is clearly Adobe’s implementation and tuning to utilize the resources available, but I can’t change their code. I am likely to upgrade or add a Mac Mini or Studio when the M4 arrives.
Well Yes, I think it helps by my decision in 2 weeks. But I have a question: I am not sure wich one I have to take because I think I need much power for CAD but I dont know. I start to study Smart Building Engineering.
Please advise. My dilemma: keep MBA 15 M2 (16/1tb) priced at 1500 or return to get MBA 15 M3 (16/512) at 1550. Lose 500 gb but have 2 more years of OS support. Last factor: i will transfer 230 gb from 2015 MBP
Thanks for the comparison. I'm coming from an M1 MBA and now dealing with much larger Photoshop files as well as having more RAM hungry apps open at the same time. I really do like the silence and weight/space savings of the MBA but I think I need to jump up to a MBP. Looks like I'll skip the M3 MBP and go for the M3 Pro MBP.

Great video I bought mine m3 around school time At Best Buy for 850. I got a 8gig basic model but just like you said with my extended hard drive I’m not missing out on the storage or ram part on the Mac book air .
Hi Jimmy--hope all is well. I imagine i'm not alone in struggling with decisions on MacBooks, as they each have advantanges and disadvantages. Years ago, i had a 16in MacBook Pro; they then introduced the 15in model and i've had it for a decade. I thought my next Pro would be the 16in, as i like the bigger screens. On Labor Day, i got a very good deal on the 14in MacBook Pro (with 18gb RAM, 500GB memory). I'm still getting used to the smaller size of the 14in even though its much brighter than my old 15in Pro. With that said, i could see myself liking the size of the 15in MacBook Air, but, given the fact that i prefer the brightness of the Pro's screens, i think i would not be happy with the less-bright screen of the 15in Air even as it is larger and ligther than the 14in. So...i'll try to challenge myself to getting used to the new 14In's size and enjoy the portability and brightness of it for traveling, etc. I wish they still made the 15in Pro, but that's life. Appreciate the solid analysis of this. Best!
Very informative…I’ve had 2 mini iPads over last decade and love them. I also have an old Acer laptop, but want to make the leap to MacBook. This definitely helped me decide - MacBook 14” Pro M3 Pro. Thx!
Watching more and more videos about the MacBooks. I think I am getting close to finding the right combo of specs. I want something slightly stronger than what I need but not excessively so if I can help it.
Many stores in China can do storage expansion, for air it's like 1000 to 2TB, for Pro it's about 1800 yuan to 2TB. If your macbook is already out of warranty, it makes sense to do it.
Most MacBook Air reviews are compared a lot in relation to creators , always talking about video editing and gaming , but the truth is even the base model for daily use is just enough
Only disagreement I have with you is the ssd. Get at least 1TB. It is infuriating that they solder in the ssd and charge so much, but I have had a 512gb mbp for 5 years and it is really frustrating maneuvering that. Even with many external ssd's and hdd's.
I just bought the MacBook M3 with 16 GB of unified memory. I like the idea of connecting to a larger monitor. I thought to use my Monterey iMAC. But then unlike my old MacBook Pro, this new Air would have to be closed. A USB -C Thunderbolt 4 cable costs $159, and I imagine I would have to get a new keyboard and mouse. Can you do a video on this perhaps?
I have a couple of questions. Should I wait for the upcoming M4 macs rumored for late 2024 or just buy the M3 now? I currently use the 2016 MacBook pro so it’s due for an upgrade especially because it doesn’t support software updates anymore. I do 3d design work but am also a student so, I need performance but also portability. Budget is not an issue because I am going to be using it for 8-10 years and I want something that will last performance wise. I checked on my iMac and I am using at least 32 g of RAM. I was thinking of waiting for the M4 max 14’ but those would probably have the same overheating issue as the current gen so I am not opposed to the 16’. What do you guys suggest I buy?
If you can wait you may as well just wait for the m4 roll out. Look at specs, testing, and then decide whether you want an m3 or m4 for your work loads. Also the M3 will probably be cheaper by then too because of the m4 models replacing. In the end if you can save those couple hundred bucks, why not?
M3 Air will be fine unless you are keeping the machine in a consistent, and long lasting high load situation. But in that scenario if you really need more power but can't get an M3 Pro MacBook Pro, check out refurbed M2 Pro MacBook Pros!
@@JimmyTriesWorld Sadly in my neck of the woods the savings is 100 euros for M". Some stores even sell those and M1 Pros still for the original MSRP. What would make sense for your situation is to just get a base model air, if possible an m1 or even m2, whatever is cheapest which you can use on the move. You can do the heavy duty stuff on your home laptop. It’s a different matter if you want to do the heavy duty stuff on the move.
I currently have a 2015 MBP that has worked for a long time. I’m a casual video editor, no 4k, just HD, but do want to get into things like 3D modelling like blender. Would a Macbook air M2 or M3 work for that? I really don’t care about waiting a few extra seconds for things to render but I want these tasks to still work better than on my old MBP if I’m going to spend the $ to upgrade
I just picked up the 16" M3 Pro. Moved from the 16" M1 Pro for reasons I won't get into here. These devices are an absolute joy if gaming is not important to you. Because casual gaming is important to me, I also have Lenovo's Legion Slim 7i (8th gen), which games really well but simply doesn't compare to the Mac, even if use-case and spec-wise it's "superior". Still, it's currently in the shop getting repaired, for the third time--hence the quotation marks around the word superior.
Yep, windows laptops cost same, don't have same build quality, don't have same port selection and portability. I'm kinda scared to jump into apple ecosystem yet, as time passes, I see no other option.
Thanks for the comprehensive review. I’m looking to downsize my 16in MBP M1 to 14in. Anyway, just want to point out that for me I need at least 2 TB SSD. The reason is I use Adobe, Microsoft, and my Lightroom catalog, which all combined use a huge chunk of space, and right now I’m pretty close to 1Tb full.
I was front end engineer and they got me a macbook air 16gb m2 chip. If you only do front end and light light backend. It works just fine. I did get slow when debugging and if I had too many repos open but honestly i was surprised at how much it could do. Just one monitor kinda was sad tho
I have the Macbook Pro M3 14'' with 18GB of RAM. I dont know why, but even with a heavy load, i get like 8GB of use in RAM and 1GB in SWAP for some reason. The idea of SWAP is correct, and your explanation as well. However, for some godamn reason, MacOS uses SWAP constantly without any reason whatsoever. Loved the video btw
SOOOOOO helpful. Omg thank you. I am using an imac from 2019. Its finally driving me nuts because it just cant keep up. So now....im considering the macbook pro M3 pro chip. Thanks so much!
Out of curiosity, has anyone ever thought of the possibility of Apple's marketing strategy surrounding the release of the m1 series chip and how much better they knew it was for mobile computing than Intel macs were? Remember, when everyone reacted to the performance improvements, the BATTERY LIFE? It was almost orders of magnitude better than the generation previous to the m1. Apple had been designing their own chips for years by the m1 release. It was also absolutely obvious that x86/64 based processors performance gains were closely correlated to power consumption. Why didn't Apple choose to release their arm based cpu's sooner? They were already miles ahead of their counterparts. They could've released an aX bionic variant for at least the MacBook Air line surely earlier than they did. The possible answer to this question is that Rosetta wasn't ready yet, but I might beg to differ. When Rosetta was released, everyone also was raving at the seamlessness of functionality and that why hadn't Microsoft been able to do so earlier? There were very few bugs I've heard of. It was a software release unlike any other. Consider this however. What if Rosetta was basically polished years before release. Knowing where x86/64 was heading (performance/power consumption) why did they choose to stay for so long and then hard pivot? Obviously the m1 was a generational leap. But it's release also meant that their previous generations of MacBook would be rendered all but obsolete with the m1. And resale prices would plummet, leading to Intel macs being sold dirt cheap. This leads to poor people who couldn't otherwise afford a MacBook without the Intel versions being so heavily discounted. But now $2000+ laptops are available for pennies on the dollar (slight exaggeration). Now these people who never could afford an iPhone or MacBook now have entered the infamous "walled garden". Those lower level consumers who have a laptop that they normally wouldn't be able to afford now get a taste of this ecosystem. A truly Marvelous ecosystem. But an addictive ecosystem. Apple now had access to a consumer segment they were unable to access. These new lower earning consumers now get to experience what all us techies refer to as the Apple experience. Depending on interpretation, this is either brilliant or predatory. Either way, if you really think about it, I'm not sure I agree with it either way. How many of us have cautioned our loved ones who are in the market for a car, and depending on their finances, steer them away from a Mercedes because of the cost of maintenance and/or repair? No matter the great deal on this expensive car, we try to reason with them to at least evaluate this choice very carefully as to not end up with a car r that they can't afford to get fixed. They get this Intel MacBook as their first Apple product, but their Android phone doesn't work as nicely with it. So they get an iPhone. But their smartwatch someone bought for them for Christmas now won't sync with the phone and laptop. So they buy an apple watch. In a short amount of time, that Intel MacBook will be rendered obsolete, and they will have no choice but to buy an ARM based MacBook if they want as seamless a transition as possible. Remember, there isn't a (what I would consider truly budget) option at the entry level. Cheapest new iPhone is what, 400 bucks? The cheapest android is a fraction of the price. Yes, it isn't as good, but at least that entry level android phone will still work with whatever peripherals I currently own. No compromises as far as functionality. There is absolutely zero equivalent option for a super price restricted consumer to purchase an equivalent cheap iPhone versus the option to purchase a truly budget/entry level android. This is troubling for me to see. Makes me wonder. I hope I'm being cynical. But as I wrote this comment, and question everything I said, even play devil's advocate, I come to the same concerning conclusion.
I just bought an M2 MacBook Air with 16gb of RAM, and honestly, for the price, it's hard to get better value out there, including Windows. The built quality and performance you get for the price would cost you much more from a high end Dell for example.
I'm quite confused between the 13" M2 air with 16gigs or the M3 Pro mbp. ~2200 for the pro and ~1500 for the air where I live. I am someone who works on AI and trains models. I have been getting by just fine with a 10th gen Intel i7 H series processor with 16gigs of ram, though it has started to get slow and be a bottleneck. I usually have a lot of tabs open and multiple editors, some that are connected to VMs. I am pushing my current machine to 100% ram and cpu very often. I would soon be joining a tech focused masters. Although I can spend the 2200, it is no doubt going to be a huge dent on my pocket. Even the air is quite expensive, but I am fine with that much. I'd probably be using this machine for a good part of the next 4-5 years. Does it make sense to save on the cash and go with the Air, I am willing to manage the occasional hiccups. Or does the pro seem like that much better an investment being about 50% more expensive? TYIA.
I initially wanted to get the Pro out of vanity. I settled with the 13" M3 Air with 16GB and 512 GB, because for the heavier AI workloads I can always ssh into my RTX 3090 machine and run my code there.

@Adrian-pl3uiyes, it’s cheap. It was fixed that’s why it’s cheaper
Buddy is best biy a good place to buy apple products like new and refurbished or as you mentioned “open box”
I worked on M1 Macbook Air for almost 4 years, and NO ISSUES AT ALL. Incredible machine. So it's likely that somwthing wrong with your Ipad specifically, or with IPad OS (there were news that latest OS updates for Ipads could hurt the devices)
But anyway - it has nothing to do with M1 chip.
Your reasoning is 100% valid, if viewing content to you is important then you made the right choice and the price you got it for is pretty nice!

I totally believe MBP is the way to go, but portability and cost-wise, MBA is a very reliable machine to be used for a good couple of years. .

My 2020 M1 MacBook Pro has been a beast it works. It still works and if I can get a couple more years out of it, I’m great.
Go for the long run that's what macbook is famous for
I really liked this video!!
Thank you!
I think 512 is better
512 for sure because OS takes a lot of GBs
512gb is good for longevity
thank you for sharing. your video is very helpful. I was in the process of buying a MacBook Pro replacement of my 10-year-old dated and broken one, and I ended up bought the basic 16" M3 Macbook Pro with 18/512 from Amazon for $1999 which is $500 cheaper than Apple Store.
I have the MacBook Pro M1 14", and it handles everything beautifully for me.
Newest MacBook Pro with 16 RAM and 1 T of storage is $2000. A great deal that will be top quality in 8 years.
So envious of American prices.
I just bought the brand new MacBook Pro M4 base model 16/512. With the discount and the money from my ipad I paid $1,150 for it.

Hey jimmy, I'm waiting for the M4s. But if I had to go for a Macbook Pro right now, which one do you think is the best?
My works include: Researching, script writing, voice over, Video editing, etc (basically content creation). The videos might be 20~30 mins in length, sometimes even more (worst case scenario) and there would be a lot of graphics work (After effects).
Will the 16 Inch M3 Pro Macbook Pro (18/512) be enough for me or should I go with the 16 Inch M3 Max Macbook Pro (36/1TB)?
Looking to buy my first MacBook. Right away, I know I want an Air. I just don’t know if I should get first gen or not. I can’t afford the latest gen.
Great overview. Very helpful and excellent comparisons. Well done!👍👍👍

Pro
Air. I have the MBP 16GB and I do all of that and more with the Pro in power saving mode. I always have a coding application, browsers with multiple tabs, PDFs, a Database management software open, and it works just fine. My buddy has an M2 air with 8GB and does the same thing as me with no issues.

MBA M2 Ram 16gb and 512 ssd better or MBA M3 based model?
Did you get the 14" MacBook? Have you gotten used to the smaller size than the 15in? I also have a 2015 15in MacBook Pro. thank you.
What about the cores for MacBook Pros? Do they make a difference?
Looking to buy the same. Should I wait for m4 pro or go ahead with m3 pro 14" ? Thanks

Thanks for the comparison. I'm coming from an M1 MBA and now dealing with much larger Photoshop files as well as having more RAM hungry apps open at the same time.
Thx!
Very helpful and insightful video! Thank you very much
Watching more and more videos about the MacBooks.
I say this with my whole being..the 14” M4 Pro 24gb ram 20core GPU 14core CPU 1TB SSD is the perfect spec. its the definite sweet spot all around.
What do you recommend for my kids to learn coding on? And for general heavy use for movies, browsing etc?
Do the MacBook Pro M3 Pro models need to have the lid closed when outputting to 2 external displays?
Enjoyed this video, full of useful info to make a more informed decision. Many Thanks

My concern is can I run Photoshop, Lightroom on the m2 air? On the base variant?
TYIA.
I'd have loved to go with an M1/2 pro mbp refurbished, but it is just not available through trusted sources where I live...
Really enjoy the info. Which Mac would you recommend for DJ's
The Macbook Pro M3 PRO support two monitos apart of the laptop? Thank
Yeah it does and the M3 Max supports four.
Would you say the black color is the superior color? Or does silver still hold that crown
9:12 which macbook are you gaming on?
15” Air, choosing between refurbished M2 24gb/2TB or new M3 16Ram/1tb. Thoughts please?
M3 chips really shine when you are doing the 3D blender works otherwise m2 24gb/2TB is enough for casual, web development, photo and video editing
I initially wanted to get the Pro out of vanity.
I settled with the 13" M3 Air with 16GB and 512 GB, because for the heavier AI workloads I can always ssh into my RTX 3090 machine and run my code there.
I just bought a starlight 15 inch Macbook Air with 16 gigs of ram and 1 terra drive. I like having 2 monitors hooked up to my laptop at home, and when I am away I can use a split screen on the 15 inch built in display. Downside, almost $2800.00cdn...
