I want to give a shout-out to the camera person and art director. I watched Janelle's performance twice and it was excellent. The director set up the mood perfectly. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I had to check if this segment WAS the official music video. The REAL music video, by comparison, was old-fashioned 1980s-style soft-core porn done right, reminding me of Robert Palmer's music videos like "Addicted to Love" and "Simply Irresistible".
Although Janelle is marvelous, she will not be able to wrestle the G.O.A.T title from Prince. He was the original Greatest Of All Time (Goat). Love that they were very good friends and worked together.💜
I think she's underrated because sometimes she concentrates too much on trying to send a message or make a point with her music. I think it turns some people off or away from her style of music. Most folks just want to party or chill out to the sound of the artist vocals or music without getting into some heavy shit. She's a very beautiful young woman with mad talent and skills I would love to see her in more movies and mainstream music.
You can't get the full experience of the electric lady unless you are seeing her preform, her moves and voice are a package that should never be seperate
It was like Janelle Monae’s parents had a baby and it was...Janelle Monae. And SHE makes amazing art with her collaborators and team and certainly learned a lot from her mentors, but I’ve had enough of this “she’s the female this or that or if two artists had a baby it’d be her”. She has been doing her own freaky Janelle thing for quite a little while and I think it’s time she gets the credit for her art instead of those whose styles may have inspired it. She-if I’d compare her with any artist of times past that are familiar to me-reminds me of Kate Bush, or Jean-Pierre Melville, or Mary Shelly. Someone who will not get in line and must be themselves. Often overlooked in their time as eccentric or even just ignored, they never stop rolling out gold in new shapes and forms regardless of the response as if they are their own audience. XO
I saw her perform this at Lollapalooza. I had no idea who she was, but watching her perform, I immediately noticed the Janet/Michael Jackson and Prince vibes. And that was when I fell in love with Janelle Monae. She was the best act at the entire festival. She brought the most energy to the stage and kept you moving from start to finish.
Not to mention a female artist who does not use her sexuality to appeal to the lowest common denominator and possesses actual musical and songwriting ability...!! You go girl.. I love that Janelle and Christine and the Queens are shaking up music with real talent.. (-: (-:
My GOD what a dancer she is. The song is of course 10/10. Yes, I know who influenced her so much, Prince was, is a genius - BUT the credits of this song goes to her. She is the artistic genius in this.
She’s channeling Janes Brown and Janet Jackson..... I love her..... great performance as always...JM, please keep up the great work...❤️❤️❤️❤️👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👸🏾
Prince was working with Janelle on this album before he died. And Janelle's debut album was very much inspired by James Brown music. So you would be 100% correct!
she referenced Prince, Janet, and Michael they all have in common that James Brown were a huge influence on them, and also Janelle. this woman! she gets it love her💜
My Lady, My Queen of R&B/Soul/Funk, beyond conventional description, Janelle Monáe, NEVER fails to impress‼️ Thank you Stephen‼️‼️♥️♥️♥️🎼🎼🎼🙆🏻♂️🙆🏻♂️🙆🏻♂️🌹🌹🌹🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻AMDG
I didn’t know you could improve on this, but I just saw her do this in Seattle and it was ELECTRIC. She channeled Janet Jackson and MJ, Prince, James Brown, so many. We are lucky to have her in this age!
We need more artists like this that actually write their own music... Too many artists nowadays that have teams of writers making their music for them. Hardly anyone really puts their hearts into their music anymore, it's nice to see that there are a few exceptions.
It is shocking and incredulous that the Grammys and the general public have not fully welcomed a rare talent such as Janelle Monae, especially one that comes with a beautiful and inclusive soul.
That intro was very Janet Jackson-esque. Nice :)
"Rhythm Nation" with a little bit of Michael's "Smooth Criminal" and Prince's "Kiss"? She dances like she's boneless from the waist down.
I want to give a shout-out to the camera person and art director. I watched Janelle's performance twice and it was excellent. The director set up the mood perfectly. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Totally agree!!
I had to check if this segment WAS the official music video. The REAL music video, by comparison, was old-fashioned 1980s-style soft-core porn done right, reminding me of Robert Palmer's music videos like "Addicted to Love" and "Simply Irresistible".
If James Brown and Prince had a baby it would be her, stunning performer and vocalist.
Definitely sounds like "kiss" by prince in the background
I was thinking that Prince has done a Dr Who and rejuvenated as Janelle Monae! Great song, super performance and a really fine band.
This ^ (James Brown & Prince) is EXACTLY right!!!
She did work with prince.
@@Mizkitty03 Yes
You can tell this is one of the songs her and Prince were working on when he passed .
@The Black 9 lol
The Black 9 No.
Wait, they knew each other? AND THEY WERE COLLABING? I had no idea. WE WERE FREAKING ROBBED. FUCK DEATH
@@ginandromeda1618 yes they have a song together too, it's called Givin' Em What They Love
@@ginandromeda1618 janelle was his protege im pretty sure
What an intelligent and inspiring woman. Just so damn excited to see what she does next.
I love Janelle's style and her music is so awesome, she is so underrated
Prince wrote this song for her. It’s fantastic.
She's an amazing performer. I just love everything she does.
Queen Janelle's an artistic genius. She elevates everything that she does. It's so exhilarating watching her perform. 🙌🏽
Is she the goat now? Would anybody doubt it?
I see what you did there and I approve :)
Anybody got it?
Although Janelle is marvelous, she will not be able to wrestle the G.O.A.T title from Prince. He was the original Greatest Of All Time (Goat). Love that they were very good friends and worked together.💜
That was Janet,Prince,Michael, and James Brown combined. What an amazing talent
Underrated artist! I have loved her for years! She just gets better with time!
Scrolled down for this comment. I knew I would find. Unfortunately so so true
I think she's underrated because sometimes she concentrates too much on trying to send a message or make a point with her music. I think it turns some people off or away from her style of music. @@independentsistah She makes plenty of music that isn't "heavy shit", though. This song, right here, is just a classic bop.
What a wonderfully talented artist! Dirty Computer is a fabulous album!

Perfect. Thank you.

That was some fancy editing you did there. Love this song!
yes sis, we love a bi queen
She's pan
We do but we love Pan Queens even more! ❤️
Oh sorry, don't want to assume the queen's sexual orientation. I love that she's open on her queerness!
Not to mention a female artist who does not use her sexuality to appeal to the lowest common denominator and possesses actual musical and songwriting ability...!! You go girl.. I love that Janelle and Christine and the Queens are shaking up music with real talent.. (-: (-:
I'm 'special' too, because I enjoy having sex with exotic fruits and melons ! Pathetic snowflakes ...
Get it in Janelle Monae.
If Prince and Janet Jackson had a child...
And the godfather was James Brown.
I’ve never heard of this amazing artist. Thanks for sharing
Oo goog are missing out. Go check out her music videos
Try one of her anchor hits, like Tightrope. You may have heard that one. Enjoy.
Tightrope, Cold War, Q.U.E.E.N., Dance Apocalyptic... She has so many good songs.
Dance Apocalyptic is wonderful.....especially when she jumped up on David Letterman’s desk toward the end of her song. So much energy!
I love her visual album, Dirty Computer. Truly amazing and captivating.
she's captivating
My GOD what a dancer she is. The song is of course 10/10. Yes, I know who influenced her so much, Prince was, is a genius - BUT the credits of this song goes to her. She is the artistic genius in this.
SOMEBODY HERE AFTER THE GRAMMYS??
Nalie Zava yeap
🙋
I wanna watch that performance... Can't find it anywhere
That was like Janet Jackson performing a Prince song.
She was writing music for this album with Prince in the final years before his death, he was her mentor.
Janet works with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Prince proteges.
I know but micheal would not be happy
Shoutout to directing and editing teams. This was fantastic.
She’s channeling Janes Brown and Janet Jackson..... I love her..... great performance as always...JM, please keep up the great work...❤️❤️❤️❤️👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👸🏾
That intro was pure MJ, damn she’s got moves!!!
More of Janet's style Ithink. Actually, she is her fan
I saw Janet
Definitely janet's style! Luv it
You mean Janet Jackson???
Beskar The intro was not Michael Jackson. The intro was paying homage to Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation”. Y’all don’t give Janet her credit.
I see Janet but hear Prince!!! You can't go wrong with that combo!!!!
Obsessed with this choreography !!
Getting her footsteps in sync with the beat going down the stairs is quite a feat.
This feels like it is something from the 70s or 80s.
GREAT JOB
REALLY LOVED THE BEGINNING
that Janet homage at the beginning. 🖤
Prince was working with Janelle on this album before he died. And Janelle's debut album was very much inspired by James Brown music. So you would be 100% correct!
Janelle was absolutely fabulous and funky....
The beggining gave me Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation music video vibes, so dope
she referenced Prince, Janet, and Michael they all have in common that James Brown were a huge influence on them, and also Janelle. this woman! she gets it love her💜

The best album this year, I think. Cool performance. She's so good.
We stan the most underrated pansexual queen 👑💖
that intro was so tight with the dance and the live band, props to the sound person as well
amazing janelle!!!! pls do a concert here in Philippines!! 💛😊
I didn’t know you could improve on this, but I just saw her do this in Seattle and it was ELECTRIC. She channeled Janet Jackson and MJ, Prince, James Brown, so many. We are lucky to have her in this age!
Nice tribute to Janet Jackson's "Control"! 💖
Anyone else thinking Janet Jackson in the beginning?
Whoever clicked thumbs down claps on the 1 & 3
GOT. THEM. 🤣
LMFAO
hahahahahahaha the accuracy
Ha! Nailed it.
😂😂😂
If Prince wrote a song and had Janet Jackson and James Brown choreograph the performance, it would look like this. I love this woman!
Prince actually produced this
What a fucking amazing performer jesus christ
Incredible!! I love her!
Wow. Like wow! That was probably the best late performance I've ever seen! Killing it! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
We need more artists like this that actually write their own music... Too many artists nowadays that have teams of writers making their music for them. Hardly anyone really puts their hearts into their music anymore, it's nice to see that there are a few exceptions.
ugh she's so beautiful & talented
The beginning was clearly an ode to Janet Jackson's 'Rhythm Nation'. Love it!!
Another incredible talent that still is flying under the radar of many.
Dirty computer is the best album of 2018
Sensational performance, incredible visuals
Definitely outstanding and stunning, OMG. I'm obsessed !
Her performance are always dope asf...
The footworks kept me clicking for the rewind
My new favorite artist. I wish I had known her sooner.
That Janet Jackson inspired opening was amazing! Now I wish they would collab! That would be one insane song if Janelle and Janet did a duet.
Groovy effects ❤️🤘❤️
Her foot works is madness. Queen indeed!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
This was so amazing my jaw was on the floor the entire performance!!!
I love the "Thank you Steven." at the end.
QUEEN OF CHOREO!!!!
oh wow this was soooo cool. and GORGEOUS
It is shocking and incredulous that the Grammys and the general public have not fully welcomed a rare talent such as Janelle Monae, especially one that comes with a beautiful and inclusive soul.
she is such an amazing performer
Amazing performance!
And the production value tho ❤️
Sounds like a Prince Song. Wouldn't doubt it if he wrote it and produced it before he passed. She did work with him. Amazing performance no doubt
Ugh... she's so amazing.
Love this queen!!
Incredible
she's an AWESOME dancer!
SIS LET US HAVE IT OMG
What a legend.
That dance sequence tho... ❤️❤️❤️
I LOVE HER
🎶 I love it,

My Queen.
Referencing Paisley Park. James Brown. Janet Jackson. Prince.
The Perfect Performer Doesn't Ex...............
YES
Iconic.
Anyone else notice the raspberry berets on the backup dancers? Love the subtle nod to Prince
JANELLE MONAE IS THE GREATEST PREFORMER LIVING!!!
she has the range!!!!!
HER PERFORMANCE AT THE GRAMMYS WAS ON POINT
YAS!!! Bring this to the GRAMMYS!
I'm proud to Stan a beautiful pansexual queen! She even brought her flag out during the concert, it was so amazing!
Prince, Miz Janet ... and The Pointer Sisters, with a li'l bit of Robert Palmer. That's just the way she makes me feel, y'all!
Yes!!!!!! Honey!!!!! Do that 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I love this!
Stan the Choreo. This is her best performance of this song.
Yes, Jackson's immediate callback in my mind. She's channelling them strongly there at the visuals.
*Dance like Michael & James, song like Prince* 🧡
filmzen Dances like Janet.
That Rhythm Nation nod. 👌
