Prince would be PROUD...
Exactly what I was thinking!
I think Prince would like her other music but he would probably see this as a rehash groove-wise of Let's Go Crazy. He was kind of a prickly dude from all accounts, and he was pretty quick to point out when people were following his path rather than their own.
Decent lyrics, decent song, great artist, this just feels put together as opposed to something that was inspired, especially compared to her previous work.
Sean Bean Prince actually participated in the production of her latest album
HE WAS! He was her good friend, they've collaborated before he and Stevie Wonder were her mentors, and have been rooting for her for years!
He's also credited on some of the synths for this current album, no doubt Prince would have loved this
The most underrated pop artist of our generation. She should be bigger than some of the people we elevate to massive fame, she’s genuinely talented at everything she does and is just unique while implementing elements of past greats such as Prince in all of her work.
Amen amen amen
E I she can actually sing she doesn't need anything else on stage with her . If she chose too . She's one intense personality. / Talent
E wasn’t Prince her mentor?
38so2000, Prince produced this and other tracks on the album
I loved her earlier albums, especially the Metropolis EP. But the first few tracks from the new album have done nothing for me, and the Pynk one was downright appalling. Hopefully the rest of the album isn't as bad.
Dirty Computer gets played routinely someway, somehow every week....that album is legendary - queerness and socio-economic activism on a whole other level. A lot of people don’t see it, but Janelle Monáe’s artistry is legendary. Underrated.
She should connect with Sa-Roc!
She is the definition of a living legend
aka propaganda
Absolutely..🙌💖
@@IrregularPineapples shhhh
Lame ass crowd. This woman deserves all the standing ovations, all the accolades, and all the awards. Can't wait for Thursday!
Pedro M they gave us a standing ovation but it wasn't kept in this take.
Well that's not right. Glad they gave you guys a standing O.
I was in the crowd. We arrived at the Ed Sullivan Theater around 2:30 that afternoon. They recorded for Thursday and Friday night shows that evening. Americans was the second song of the night both of which had two takes each. It was after 9:00 when we got out of the theater. I apologize for the no standing o but I think everyone was ready to go. I wish I could see video of their first song, Make Me Feel.
Yup
This is my first time experiencing Janelle Monáe and I have to say that I'm very impressed.
kadsl123 You gotta check out the album!
Welcome to a whole new world of awesome pop music and brilliant visual art, my friend.
You're in for a ride. She's certainly one of the best artists this decade has to offer.
Check out her other songs, especially Django Jane!
For context, and for the multi-layered creative explosion that drew a lot of her older fans in, star with The Archandroid (2010)!!! Then listen to the albums that follow! (The Electric Lady 2013, then Dirty Computer released thsi year). She also has a 2003 full length album, and a 2007 (or 2008?) 7-song EP with beautiful well-thought out and executed songs.
janelle is such a queen
and a king!
I absolutely love her and all her music and live performances!!!... y'all should check out her mini movie called Dirty Computers as well
GeeGee FromTheD you know I saw it and I don’t know. I loved the actual music videos. But the story. It was ok.
ColoringKaria I loved the story cuz it sends a message... We are not suppose to be the same. That's what makes us all unique in our own way. Being the same would be boring
ColoringKaria and that's the message I get
GeeGee FromTheD me too
Thank you so much to Janelle Monáe and her team for letting me be a part of this performance! It was a dream come true for me to sing and dance in a song with so much integrity! I'll never forget this experience! ❤️
That's so cool. And great work--you guys were brilliant! I'd never heard the song before tonight when it closed an episode of The Handmaid's Tale--and I immediately had to find out what that catchy, brilliant song was--which brought me here! You guys made the tune even better! Bravo!!
This was basically the only song on the new album that I wasn't really feeling... until watching this performance. Was definitely the right choice for this venue, show, and audience.
same!
This is also just better than the studio version. I get what she was going for with the robotic recitation at the beginning on the album, but I think putting some punch into it is a better artistic decision. Her whole performance here has just got more fire than the recording, and it puts life and meaning into the song. Live performances be like that sometimes :)
SAME
I just listened to the studio version and was kinda underwhelmed so I googled it and came across this performance and my jaw has just been hanging open for like 3 minutes.
Whattt youre crazy this song is great, it fits in with the album and the message is great, super catchy much better than the so afraid song that comes before it
@@caligal1090 literally the best closer to an already unbelievable album
She's so fresh and amazing, I'm Canadian, but she had me singing and dancing. North American is good enough. *grooves*
Jenny Lee yes. I say no borders anywhere!
Same here Jenny, she was just up north on tour not too long ago
One of the best tv performances i've seen recently! Janelle is a queen!!
The new generation of politically awakened talented african americans. Thank you for showing the light!
OH HELLLLL YESSSS. God she is so flawless and intelligent. So happy to see her on the Colbert show and to see her perform such an important song!!! YES YES YES
Holy 80's!
Have you heard the rest of the album? 😀
BCPR Nope. This is the first I've heard them.
We need an 80s revival. (80s child, lol!)
Yeah, I had the exact same feel. Very late 80's early 90's.
So agree - I thought she was saying "I'm a man who can"
WHAT AN ARTIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also, is that MJ Rodriguez from the TV show Pose right next to her as a dancer? AWESOME.
This is my favorite song from the album! I was fortunate enough to see her live last weekend and she is absolutely AMAZING! I danced the whole time and sweated out my hair OKAY! She definately created a space where people from all walks of life could come and feel free to let go and be themselves. It was beautiful.
If you haven't listened to Dirty Computer or seen the visual album I'd advise you to do so ASAP!!! You won't be disappointed.
And the fact that she's dancing with Blanca from POSE 😍💕💕
VentVideos Oooooo lucky you to see her in concert! ❤❤❤
If there’s a heaven, Prince is smiling on her from it.
Janelle Monáe is such a Legend, their performance is always on point. The voice, the choreography 💜 Immaculate!
Cue butthurt racists! But I LOVED IT!!! She’s amazing and I have no idea where I have been that I only discovered her music this year!!
ColoringKaria this is what America will be when all the old white men who run it die off...
Konglomerant At least we can hope.
ColoringKaria whaaaaat? Welcome to the fan club!! Yay
Haven't seen one comment from any "butthurt racists". Just positive comments. Don't be one of those trolls.
ColoringKaria Please go listen to ArchAndroid and Electric Lady. You’ll be hooked!
What a jam 🎉😍
a true artist. much love for someone who knows when we cannot be silent
I adore her in every way
GODDAMN ICONIC AF fuckin love her. dare say performance levels is almost comparable to prince ✊✊✊
One of my favorite songs EVER!
Yes! Dirty Computer is the album of the year
I think you've got a new national anthem!
Album of the year. Artist of the decade.
Thank you, Janelle Monae for being a role model for many young people who are looking for direction and inspiration. And your albums are fantastic.
I'm amazed to see something like this having been on American TV and awed by the full energy and heart of the choreography and performance. What a gem. I love this song anyway.
She is an amazing poet. And her words are so powerful in all her songs. I love her and everything she is.
Oh my gosh yessss thank you for sharing this performance. Back when the album was first released, I was blown away by this song bc it made me proud to be an American for probably the first time in my life. This song means so much to me and seeing it performed makes it even better. I started crying from the beginning because I was pleasantly surprised to see the lovely face of MJ Rodriguez!
The way the music moves through her and onto us is magical
Mad Prince vibes :)
Prince was a mentor of hers 💗
Damjan Raknic wasn’t he her mentor?
38so2000 Wasn't aware of this, makes sense 😊
What a Queen. What a relevant song and album. Well done, You deserve so much more. 💞 Hope the Grammys are all yours.
i'm bawling my eyes out this is so beautiful
same! was in tears at the "this is not my america" part
i'm crying. GO OFF QUEEN
This performance is so powerful and means so much
Janelle you are a beast for this!!
I have loved Janelle for years and continue to love her and work more and more. This whole album is amazing.
Beautiful! It's good to see her and the message hitting such a large audience. Any glimpse at a sea change is good.
She been on fire for awhile and this year been shining and lighting up many stages!🙌💞✨she got me smiling and crying🙏🐐😹😻
I can only hope Janelle continues to make music with such a deeply inspired commentary on our conditions and struggles. Huge love and respect!
A Black Pansexual Queen. We Stan.
I started crying at the end of that. What a powerhouse tbh
this made me CRY 😭 i love this song and this performance is so powerful
We saw her in concert on Wednesday night at the MSG Hulu Theater and that performance was awesome!
And now seeing this performance featuring Mj Rodriquez (one of our favorite actresses from FX's Pose) dancing her ass off is super awesomeness!
F**k yeah! We are Americans!
Oh. My. God. Where are her Grammys??? Why is the whole world sleeping on janelle monae
I legit had to turn this off for a minute because I was watching it in public and I was about to start crying. I love her so much.
Unconsciously clicked liked again after liking before
So GREAT!!
The definition of true artistry. When both Prince and Stevie sing your praises, you know you're saying something.
Is that M.J.Rodriguez in the white hat?
Brenda Cuellar yes it is
POSE baby
Indeed it is
Brenda Cuellar Don't hate on me... But who's that?
suzawilo she is an actress, most known for 'Pose', new tv show from ryan murphy. higly recommend it
This is so powerful, I love Janelle
This is A-MA-ZING! The lyrics are the bomb!
Wow, what a powerhouse talent!!!
She's stunning
I can not love this video enough. THANK YOU SO MUCH for this. Amazing album from start to finish and the emotion film for it too.
Great performance!
My Queen!
Such an amazing role model. So talented.
Seamlessly weaving activism into great music ❤❤❤
Brilliant...as always
She is my favorite ever. I just... Yay!
This album is solid gold 🔥🔥👑
I love Janelle Monae so much
Powerful
This is my fave song on the album ❤️❤️❤️
that's how you drop an ICONIC perfomance
I am totally in love with her
Watched till the end. Still screaming. God has blessed me and I’m just so happy. Bout to fucking cry but it’s aight. Colbert is my fav comedian now, just because of this.
anyone else hear the Prince in this? just me?
these lyrics tho....YASSSSS!! QUEEN!!!!
Elizabeth Heidel well prince worked with her on the album and on her prior works before he passed.
Elizabeth Heidel let's go crazy
Prince was basically her mentor and she regularly credits him as a major source of inspiration and influence. He also collaborated with her on several occasions.
He was one of her mentors!!!
I know very little about Prince but even I could see his influence. What's amazing to me is how well she pulls it off. I think most people would look ridiculous if they tried to pay homage to Prince but Janelle makes it seem natural.
-If you love this, you'll also love her version of Heros. Somebody took down that Hero's video where they're all in black & white & dancing, but the song is still excellent!
God she is so amazing, i love her!!!!
Loving this woman so much! Her lyrics are so good, whoa
Powerful!!! ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
Shes so good live!
She's a phenomenal artist, has been since the start. 🔥💥❤👏👏
A true talented visionary 😍
Love love love Janelle, and I see you MJ aka Blanca great performance
Opened for Prince a number of years ago and was fantastic...
best new musical/anthem song.. amazing performance
Are all her songs like this? Has a very 80's feel to it which I like.
Prince was one of her mentors, and her latest album shows a lot of his influence. Try Make Me Feel for more explicitly 80s inspirations.
But no. Each of her songs has a different feel. She’s got great range. She released most of the songs as audio on UA-cam and has some really amazing music videos for this album. Pynk was amazeballs and the most black lesbian thing I have seen since forever!
I think she has a great range. Her earlier stuff is amazing. Some of it sounds from the 60s, some 70s, and some sounds like it came from the future.
Check out the video for Cold War. So, so good.
Tim Mc No, listen to BaBopByeYa for example although that one is pretty unique as a song for hers (beyond interludes)
No, songs from her first two records were far less poppy and more complex and ambitious. Start with those two records. Big difference.
Brilliant! Timeless! Bravo!Janelle Monae is art in motion.
Once again, an amazing performance ! 😍
this gives me chills watching right now.
Janelle is amazing.
She is brilliant, an American treasure 😉.
Amazing lyrics! LOVE her!!!
YESSSS THE GIRL FROM POSE!!
Janelle with the bops!
LOVE THIS WOMAN
Woman!!!! Amazing!!!! 😍😍😍😍👑👑👑👑👏👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
GOD, SHE'S SO GOOD
God she's so beautiful and talented
I was literally listening to this song on ITunes when I saw this video. It's such a banger
She is so effing awesome
QUEEN
Wow just madly incredible art
Yay! Body positive dancers! Way to go Janelle Monáe !
MJ 💕
ok this got be emotional
Oh my. Is that the lady from Ryan Murphy's FX series POSE?! I am loving Janelle Monae even more! 😍🤩😍
