The most hated bands vol 7: Creed, Blink-182 and Taylor Swift! I talk about:
    * Creed singer Scott Stapp's issues with mental health, starting the post-grunge sound, their Christian lyrics (eg "Higher")
    * Blink-182 as the end of "real punk" in the mainstream (vs Green Day, Rancid and The Offspring)
    * Why Tom Delonge, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker were so marketable
    * Taylor Swift's turn from loved to hated, her and Kanye West at the 2009 VMAs and her lyrics

Finn, can you do a video about the crust punk/neo crust scene and how even though really underground, it was took by the pop mainstream and use as an aesthetic fashion ( lady gaga, Kanye West, lil Wayne, David Beckham, etc) and how it was received in both spheres.
Also in a similar way, how traditional skinhead ( Uk 69 ) was used by pop artistes ( Kanye West, Beyoncé in her "Flawless" video, and many more artist that are casually wearing the Dr Martens boots and bomber jacket as it was an invention of 2010) fashions.( with maybe a little crash course about skinhead and how "Nazi" Should not be the first thing that comes to mind when earing that name.

They probably don't care they've never been approved by the punk gatekeepers. Like you said, they weren't really part of that scene.
I've never been into the real juvenile dick and fart jokes they always did, but I've always really loved their songs and still love playing them on my bass. Taylor was a child when she signed that contract, she had no idea what her career would do and what owning her masters meant. Most adults don’t know what to do when given such an opportunity. Like what kid goes to music law school❓She was never given the true opportunity to own her work. She was told by Scott Borchetta that if she wanted to buy her masters she could earn them back one at a time for every new album that she created for him. Thus signing a new contract being enslaved to him for six more albums. She would have to have created 12 albums for him at minimum. He knew that would be unattainable and unfair. Her father did know the night it was sold but in contract he was not allowed to tell her. Scott would have had a massive lawsuit against him. Taylor would have been sad but ok with her masters being sold but the problem came in with who Scott sold them to. He sold them to Scooter Braun the man who is responsible for the artists who have shamelessly harassed Taylor throughout her career. Kanye nastily put a naked wax figure of her in his bed next to him and Kim. We all know what he did during her 2009 performance when he stormed the stage, then the infamous phone call that took place between him and Taylor that Kim illegally recorded then edited to make her look like a conniving snake. The public literally almost destroyed Taylor because of the bullying she received. With that being said now she works tirelessly for every artist to have the opportunity to own the things they create. Let’s not forget it was Taylor who sat on her bedroom floor writing lyrics, it was her who came up with the melodies that everyone sings today, it was her who became a cultural icon. There’s no way that two men in the middle of the night with a click of a pen should be able to sign away everything that she had created. If she was a male artist the response she received would probably be different

I remember once reading a punk message board where a Christian punk band was mentioned. It devolved into two guys saying how you can't be Christian and punk, because being punk is about no rules and being rebellious. Then went on a discussion about the rules of being punk. So it was funny that the band rebelling against the punk rules and regulations were deemed to be too conforming to be punk, by guys brandishing the rules of conformity about how to be punk.
All the talk about Blink not being accepted by 'real punks' made me think of this. Of course we see this mentality all over music, but often more well veiled. Being so blatant and obvious simply made it that much funnier.

Crust punk here...Blink 182 Was one of the band that my friends and I were all listening. for a bunch of us, it was what brought our attention to punk music and we branched out from there. We're in our mid 30's now some of us are more into the hardcore scene, others are in the black metal/grindcore/ crust punk stuff, some are into the trad skinhead scene listening to oi!, reggea and rock and roll and finally some of us are still into ska and punk rock and skateboard but we all share Blink 182 as a common influence in the late 90's.

Any recommendations for essential crust punk listening?

    • @permafrostprod1
      @permafrostprod1 3 роки тому +2

@@KenGold666 Oh yeah, of course. first I will divide the suggestions in two categories : the fisrt would be the classic traditional sound of crust punk/D-beat umbrella and the second the Neo crust punk band ( more melodic with influences from metal genres and more instruments skills displayed).
As you asked for essentials I would not just list the top tier ones and the most iconic , I will also include some smaller band that I think are an essential for a good library. they will be list in no particular order and regardless as sub-sub genres as long as they fit the big crusty tree.
      traditional Crust punk and D-beat
( influences comes from hardcore punk, street punk, hardcore and grindcore)
( general topics: in your face politics, war/pasifism, mental illness, feminism, digust and anguish, veganism)
      - Discharge ( godfathers of the "dis" sound, D-beat) from England 1977.
They created a music that led to a lot of extreme metal et punk subgenres. usully band with "dis" at the beginning will have a strong influence from the band ( in the exeption of (in terms of bigger names) Discharger that is an Oi! band and Disrupt that is a grindcore band)
      - Rudimentary Peni, England 1980
      - Kurwa Aparata, a small band from the DIY street punk crust scene from Austria -circa 2005?- . they are not well known but are a really good exemple of the sub genre
-Amebix England 1978 ( OG crust)
      - Seitan, Sweden -circa 2012?- ( newer band with old school original D-beat sounding)
      - Tragedy, USA 1995 ( hardcore rooted crust/D-beat)
      - Cress England 1998
      - Aus Rotten USA 1991 (usually seen as a gateway to the genre, a good place to begin the dive into crust music, sitting between street punk and anarcho crust)
      - Besthöven Brasil 1990 (one man band, Dis-crust)
      - Inepsy Québec, Canada 1999 ( dubbed as Motor-Crust, A sound heavily influence By Motorhead)
      - Disrupt USA 1987( Grindcore/Crust punk)
      - Darkthrones Norway 1986 ( well known as a Black metal legendary band they ventured in the roots of the genre for 3 awesome albums from 2007 to 2010 exploring Blackend crust, crust punk and black and roll.
Neo Crust - a lot of these bands will include strings instruments and shows greater musical skills- ( influences comes from Post Harcore , Crust punk, doom metal, black metal ) ( general topics: earth crisis ,nature's beauty, veganism, epic journey, feminism, environment)
      - fall of efrafa England 2005 ( concept band based around the universe of Watership Down, a 1972 novel by Richard Adams) strongly recommending both the band and the book ( there is also a cartoon, a movie and a Netflix mini serie for Watership Down) the band vocalist have a ton of great other bands that are worth checking out and he is also an incredible artist , Alex Bradshaw.
      - Siphilisation Belgium 2008 ( Epic Doom, Post Crust. powerfull melodic music with skilled musicians and brutal vocals)
      - Öroku USA -circa 2005?- ( post hardcore , Metal driven crust energy, cello)
      - Gattaca, Czech republic 2009 ( Epic crust, strongly vegan )
      - Madame Germen, Spain -circa 2003?- ( neo crust with strong anger in the vocals line and beautifull music full of emotions)
      - La ligne Maginot Austria 2009 ( heavily involved in the DIY and AnarchoPunk scene)
      - CWill, Switzerland -circa 1994?- ( Neo crust/ hardcore with strings , more close to the harcore roots the agression is more raw but the music is still beautifull and the band has skilled musicians)
      - Iskra , Canada 2002 ( Blackened crust and green anarchist , raw material but still in the newest declination of the crusty-verse )
      - Ecocide, USA 2011 (blackened crust with strong environment themed lyrics)
      - Remains of the day, USA -circa 2000?- ( Melodic crust or Neo crust a good exemple of the genre)
      - Dirty Kids Discount USA -circa 2013?- ( although not a neo crust band per say, they are labeled as a folk punk band but they have that crust punk sound and energy so they would be more of a folkcrust band and that would be a New subgenre of crust so it would be fair to put them under the "NEO" Crust umbrella)
      - human plague Mexico - circa 2011?- ( post harcore / neo crust. good melody and tangible emotions through the vocals.
Also an honorable mention to Last Mesure, Australia -circa 2009?- ( they are a pure crust punk band and I didn't mention them earlier cause they are really difficult to find. they started to play when they where 14/15 years old and they where so fresh to listen to , so much anger so much truth in their music , influence by hardcore and crust their full length album " Byproduct of the nuclear familly" ( 2012) was incredible. if you dig deep enough you can find some of their harsher recording online but that does not give them justice at all. maybe some day I'll post that album online.
Well I hope it's an answer you will enjoy digging into.
      cheers

I always attributed a lot of the hate to Taylor Swift to the fact that she turned her back on the country scene that allowed her the exposure to get to where she is... much like Gwen Stefani turned her back on her original ska fans and Jewel turned her back on the folk music fan base that made her early paychecks flow in, Taylor Swift also took the pop route and I feel that's a major factor in people disliking all three of those artists

    • @wzwzwz
      @wzwzwz 3 роки тому +2

Probably, but normal pop-country fans in general have no problem with Swift. Even some traditionalists tolerates her toe dipping in country every once in a while. Country had been slowly redeeming themself from the embarassment brought by bro-country and any substantial songs that actually sounds country, even from an outsider, is welcomed most of the time

Most people don’t know a single thing about Taylor Swift, they just jump on the bandwagon of hate. Taylor was actually saving country music at the time which was dying. I dare people pick up a guitar, write their own lyrics then sing them in front of hundreds of thousands of people and see if they can do any better. The answer is probably not. People have the stereotypical idea that pop music is cheesy and easy to make, well guess what if you took some music theory lessons you will quickly find out that pop music done in Taylor’s style is incredibly difficult to make. You probably won’t ever be able to achieve the level of musical artistry that she has. “Haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate”

Blink definitely put their time in they played at schools, bars in front of nobody, they toured in a van for some years they worked hard for a good 4 or 5 years before getting a major label to sign them. Yeah they were signed to a small Indy label before that but so does every other band and the small labels don’t do much for you. A lot of people think they were just an overnight success in 99 when enema came out, many people didn’t know it was their 3rd album and didn’t know they were a band for 7 years damn near a decade. The punk police definitely said they weren’t punk but that’s subject yeah they didn’t share the same roots and beliefs the hardcore punks did but they still had the punk attitude of we are going to play what we want to play, say what we wanna say and don’t care if you like it or not.

I’ve always loved Taylor Swift just because I liked her since elementary school and I feel like I somewhat matured with her music which made me feel really close to it and her. I still have the fearless platinum album on my iTunes! I can see how you could dislike her music for seeming self-absorbed or something, but imo it’s fine because that’s her art. It’s how she expresses herself and she loves it, so if she can make good music around her life and make it big? Good for her! I do like heavier music usually, but for more pop music she’s good at what she does and she’s always evolving what she writes and puts out and for that I’ve always stick by Taylor’s music. Cool to see you mention her in a video, even if it’s for being hated! Lol

What amuses me as an older metal fan who enjoys pop music (I grew up on as much hair metal as NWOBHM, so of course I like pop), is that Taylor Swift gets bashed for writing about her life in a self absorbed way, when that is literally most grunge bands' whole schtick (and frequent in later punk too). For the rest, if you don't like pop you're not going to like TS, but it's hard to deny she's a brilliant pop songwriter. And she can write successfully to multiple genres which is impressive. I actually believe one day she'll do a full-on voice and guitar album that'll be the best Joni Mitchell album Joni Mitchell never released. Folklore gives an inkling of that direction but I surmise that album is still a few years down the road.

" Because there are more dumb people than smart people in this world (that answers the question of why is the world so effed up) they don't even make their own music ffs ,I won't deny there are good singers like ariana grande who has a good voice but her music still sh*t no matter how many people they hire.

It turns our that I found the documentary very interesting about the crushing influence of popular opinion and social media on an artists!

    Another awesome video, thnx Finn!!
It was nice to be educated about Blink being hated back in its day, I personally never saw it like that nor even thought about them as a disliked band... I guess 'cause i'm from Spain the "school culture" is diferent in some points, for example we have no school dance nor votes for king and queen and/or even a distinction between the popular kids, outcast, jocks and whatever... I do remember and belive mostly during that time other teens thought they looked cool with the dreadlocks, tattoos, clothes (I should know, I was one of them); But after all this time since I understand and see a lot more of that culture I din't while growing up (no reference to damm it) it's understandable. Hope it makes sense, my english is very rusty.
Finally regarding something i'd like to see: Please, please, please TALK! mention even, about... Kill Creek. Have being listening to them for a bunch of years but can't find any info' on them, have not seen any video footage and it sucks¡¡¡ St. Valentine's Garage is freaking amazing for me i keep going back to it/them in general.
    Cheers, have a good week.

You uploaded this SO SOON after I was thinking about WHY Blink are timeless; Yes, some of the fashion trends were cringey. And yes, they began to get worse live / songwriting declined BUT.. They are still timeless and relevent.
Because when we think about Kid Rock & all the new metal bands in 2000, we think ‘lol that was funny, cringe, glad thats over.’
When we think about scene kids and huge fringes and weird screamo music, we cringe and some of us think ‘what were we thinking?’
In 10 years we will prob look at Machine Gun Kelly or emo rappers or Gucci Gang and be like cringeee. (i already do sometimes)
But Blink 182 (along with the other pop punk and punk rock bands) are the only ones we can look back on and be like ‘lol that was so fun. So cool. So glad we had that.’ And i think thats why all these Simple Plan / New Found Glory-esque nostalgia tours and festivals do so well haha.

Billie Eilish is an insane example of that. I am personally indifferent when it comes to her actual music, but ever since I first heard of her it seems like her face is everywhere for seemingly no reason. She’s even got her own Fender signature ukulele somehow.
I absolutely love bands like the offspring and blink, but if they were as everywhere back then as Billie Eilish is today, I can completely understand why older punk rockers I know don’t like them🤣

I do not like mainstream pop at all, especially Taylor's, but folklore was more personal and I felt like there were layers and things to decipher, unlike her previous music. I want her to continue with this folk/indie/alternative sound, because it sounds like the "real" Taylor.

Yes, and no. Same band, but it's clear that scott had more creative control in Creed. Alterbridge isn't exactly post grunge. Mark gives them some thrash elements, Myles gives it some rock vibes, and flip and Brian tie everything together. Think more alternative than post-grunge

    • @unoriginal_name7091
      @unoriginal_name7091 3 роки тому +14

Hell no. They only had a little grunge on their first album and they'd abandoned them completely by Blackbird. Their sound is an odd mess of tons of genres including groove, alternative, thrash, and traditional metal. Tremonti really developed his own guitar style on Blackbird that was fully realized on AB3 and beyond and the band's songwriting has slowly shaped itself around that weirdness. Their songwriting is miles ahead of Creed (tbf Creed has 1-2 decent if dated albums) and over time they've all proven themselves to be very technical musicians, especially Myles who's FUCKING FIFTY and still sings like he's in his 20's. They're well worth a listen.
