- Blink-182 became famous for their lighthearted brand of pop-punk, but despite the upbeat music, the band members have faced a lot of tragedy over the years.
The band infighting started before they ever got famous, as the circumstances surrounding the departure of their first drummer remain controversial, and the members of the trio struggled to get along even after their first hits.
They broke up indefinitely in 2005, and although they got back together, the difficulties have continued. From the drama of their side projects to the truly devastating events that caused them to get back together, let’s take a look at some tragic details about Blink-182.

Do you think Blink-182 can ever be the same without Tom?
Grunge
No, his voice IS Blink182 now. I don’t think they can go back to the days before.
They’ll never be the same without Tom but Tom’s heart wasn’t in it, and Matt Skiba is amazing so I think they have good things in their future.
I think he’s into much bigger things now
trying to prove the existence of aliens
Absolutely not.
Honestly don't care that much for Tom, as long as Travis is behind the drums! I think California was an awesome record!
Thats how you get views. Put Tragic in front of everything.
lol it's so lame
so tRaGiC
Some of it are true while some of is just lame
I truly do miss the pop-punk boom of the early 00's
Listen too Machine Gun Kelly
@@conorwarnes9132 you mean sh*ts?
@@conorwarnes9132 dude it's so surprisingly good
You still can say Blink and you know exactly what band you’re taking about
One of my favorite bands. Will always have a special place in my heart. First heard all the small things as an 8 yr old kid and fell in love instantly. Wish I could go back to those days when life was simple.
Such a shame Tom was so difficult going towards the end. I just feel like he grew out of blink. Blink was always fun and weird and joking around.
I love how the band name is like an Xbox gamer tag when the name you want is taken you add numbers on the end
That’s what I was thinking lmaoo
the name came from them putting in blink. But it didn't work so 182 more times and they got to blink-182, the first available gamertag.
That's pretty much what happened
Lol facts bro
Fun fact: Take off Your Pants & Jacket was recorded in just two weeks, and Travis recorded all the drum tracks in a couple of days as they were forced by the label to get something out. Also, don't sleep on Boxcar Racer--that album is incredible.
Also first date was one of the last written songs as the label needed a happy joyful summer song and none of the tracks worked for them so they wrote first date
No it wasn’t
@@WillySkin89 lmao
Tom 'i can't talk about that it's confidential' Delong
Everytime I think about Blink 182 I wanna cry...they were my childhood and my teen years I love them so much!
I like how they can mention boxcar racer, the band with tom and travis, and not +44, the band with mark and travis.. weak
Box Car Racer was better in my opinion and more impactful to the group as a whole
Also Travis Barker had a band called Transplants with Rancid singer Tim Armstrong while Travis was also playing drums for hip hop artist
Yes! I love +44
In 7th grade my math teacher quickly found out my love for this band. He told me growing up he was best friends with Tom Delonge’s brother. The next day he brought me a blink guitar pic, the only band item toms brother ever gave him. I still have it today.
I feel bad for you
Dave Grvn How so?
They can go on without Tom but the fact that the world is celebrating Tom's return proving that he's irreplaceable
Wooooow, doesn't even mention +44...
thats what I was thinking
Ikr. They didn't do their research.
+44 very under rated. I remember thinking it was like a war between AVA vs +44. Always went for +44.
...And Barker's drum album.
How am I just now finding out that Terry Cruz was in the “Down” video!? How!? 😂🤣😂🤣😂
1) Compairing CD sales from 2011 to CD sales from 2001 is pretty ridiculous. The whole music business was and still il trying to find a way to stay alive and healthy.
2) The guys grew up, but so did their fans.
3) I've been in bands all my life. Don't get me wrong, I have never been slightly close to 1% of the kind of success these guys had. But, as far as I'm concerned, there really is no point making music that you don't feel like making and creative evolution is the most natural artistic process...especially if you have enough money in the bank to provide yours with a stable future....also, stay off drugs...it's good advice for musicians, for people with sudden influx of money or for pretty much everyone actually :).
I don't get why some people prefer Scott as a drummer. Travis's drumming is probably the main reason I still listen to Blink 182 from time to time to this day.
No one prefers Scott.
Scott was good for the time. Travis is good for his time in blink.
Because fast skate punk fans prefer the band with Scott
Scott has his own band now?
@@kewl800i He plays in a band called The Wraith
This Grunge channel needs to know the definition of “tragic”
Though Neighborhoods is imho no where near the quality of Take Off Your Pants And Jacket. You can't really compare their first week sales like that. The music industry changed a lot from 2001 to 2011. They weren't getting numbers from fan uploaded UA-cam videos of their new songs for example
I mine without Fin what can you do?
exactly
True
THANK YOU for pointing out at that, I mean, it is ridiculous to draw such a paralel withtout taking into account or addressing the changes in industry
The only thing tragic was how Tom DeLonge kept his Angels and Airwaves singing style when he rejoined Blink-182 in 2009.
I think his voice just changed, nothing he could've done
@@juandelacruz4679 haha and his accent lmao
@@juandelacruz4679 didnt he have cancer?
Ben de Groot watch blink at Wembley 2004 his voice was already changing
@@juandelacruz4679 he used to sing with a technique that our choir teacher told us not to use because it sounds so gross. I do love when he does it though for some reason
I loved the part where they talked about their follow up ep to neighborhoods, especially because dogs eating dogs was the shit!
They literally never once mentioned Dogs Eating Dogs. Also seems weird that they wouldn't mention that Cheshire Cat also carried the name "blink" before adding the 182 to their band name.
Sum 41 was the 41st day of their summer break. It had meaning
Scott and Tom should make a band called Blink 180-Too
lolz
I was surprised there was no mention of +44. Mark and Travis formed that group when Tom left the first time to pursue Angels and Airwaves. The +44 album is amazing and rivals some of Blink’s best stuff.
I was 16 yrs old back in 1999... so its WEIRD seeing this as being over 2 DECADES ago, I know other ppl can relate right..? Lol
100%
the Dogs Eating Dogs EP is really underrated. some of their best riffs and melodies are on that record.
Man I remember when I was in the third grade (04) my brother had their Self titled album, I listened to it and I still listen to it at 25. I kinda fell off when they released neighborhoods, but I gave California a try and I love that album so much.
I love how they always come back together when something life threatening happens to one of them. True bros
the nostalgia whiplash I got from this video was truly violent.
I love that they put Terry Crews in their "Down" video hahaha
When I first stated getting into punk as a 11 year old I saw Blink pre 182 play at a local record store in San Diego called music trader, it was a free show and there was maybe 30 people there, I think it was 93 or 94. I bought a split record with them and another SD band called Swindle, I've seen that record on e bay wish I still had it!
That's cool dude. I 1st got into Em in 96.
I was 16.
Still love Em.
Fun fact: weeks prior to this show I saw Green Day at the San Diego sports arena it was the Dookie tour and my 1st concert, so my 1st 2 shows we're Green Day and Blink 182 probably the two biggest names in 90's pop punk
That's awesome.!!! Still remember rocking the "Dookie" album when I was a 14 yr old at my uncle's house lol It kills me that I've nva seen Blink live especially in there prime.
Mxpx either.
But living down under & nearly 40 now I've had the privilege to witness some awesome stuff over the years.
Unwritten law, NFG, Rise against, nofx, lagwagon & one of the biggest & best experiences was A.F.I December underground album
Definitely regret never seeing these guys live in the early 2000's. At this point it seems like a reunion is never going to happen.
@@chrisgolledge4283 nice! Being from San Diego I saw unwritten law a few times, I was at the blue room release show
I love all of their albums. They have always been and will always be my favorite Band.
Jerry Finn was a major influence in Blink 182’s commercial success. RIP
The most tragic detail about this is the fact that Tom was replaced with Skiba
Skiba rocks but whatever.
This was a rad timeline it was awesome 😎Great Job 👏
People didn’t seem to realize that when Tom left blink in 2015 for UFO research and conspiracies he had also felt like there was too much for him in terms of music like the fact that he was doing blink and AVA at the same time and had been diagnosed with skin cancer and even though the symptoms are gone and he’s remained clean ever since it was hard for him to deal with considering the fact he could’ve died the years they toured between 2011 and 2014 since 2011 was the year he was diagnosed with it, so he felt like he had no other choice but to do a non music related career since he had been studying on UFOs for a long time so it isn’t really his fault, he just felt pressured into doing multiple things at once and probably wasn’t sure how to deal with it properly
Lol Tom doesn’t “study” anything dude, except his seroquel 😂
Tragic! Tom Delong is very well known in the UFO community
He’s also known in the schizophrenia community for the same thing lol
I had no Idea Matt from the Alkaline Trio was the newer member of the band, that's crazy! 2 of my favorite band from high school. Gunna have to give their newer stuff a listen. Nicely done
Box Car Racer is my favorite Tom Delonge album
1mlb704 it’s his best work
Great Upload!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tom asked for a break from blink for time with his family yet started a new band and put out multiple albums with them
Tom did most of that work at home btw
@@friendlyfire782 they recorded neighborhoods in separate homes...
@@tylerhughes2136 that's what I meant. My bad bruh
they're back, and were all ready for it!!!!
Enema of the State was the 1st Blink-182 album I ever owned. Had also listened to Dude Ranch from a friend in school. I WILL ALWAYS respect both Scott and Tom for their contributions to Blink-182. That said, I fully support Tom on his passionate endeavors, and I'm kinda glad he left the band. I think he’s doing amazing things in the creative field which also happens to be my bread & butter (I’m an Art Director), and also in demystifying extraterrestrial phenomena, which I also fully believe in. Peace & Love. We are not alone.
same first album I owned too.
Tragic details: they had the same name as an Irish band so they added a 182 to the end
An absolute catastrophe
Awesome, i like how you mentioned the departure of Scott is not 100% confirmed as fired for alcohol or went back to school, also but you missed all dogs eating dogs EP stage of blink
Scott quit/got fired because of alcohol abuse. There was no speculation at the time. I remember how he didn’t show up for a set. Just FYI for anyone wondering, every single person who liked blink at the time was aware about Scott. Drinking got in the way. (Or drugs and they didn’t say anything?)
As someone that got to see them at Reading Festival - i'm so glad, It may be selfish - but it made my life,
How do you not mention Big Oily Men as one of the proto-blink band names?!
i thought that was toms band before blink?
Khloe McBride it was. BOM had no association with anyone but Tom.
Scott Raynor is more famous then any of us and he was fired over 20 years ago lol
This is a very pro Mark and Travis video
Great video! on Box Car Racer Mark was invited for "elevator"
All I'm saying is if AVA and Blink did a co-headlined tour, I'd be there. Tom went all crazy and broke our hearts on two occasions but you still have to respect the guy musically. I'd love to see him and Matt sing a song together. That would be bananas.
Miss you is what I call "my boys' song" . It's the only song I've ever heard by blink 182 I like the video images too. Thank you
p.s. it always makes me cry.
So there’s a story my brother told me, his friend was at a backyard party and there was a fight that apparently went down, Scott raynor and my brothers friend, apparently his friend broke Scott’s arm and that’s why he couldn’t play with blink so they hired Travis and the rest is history
You got enough ads on this video?
You failed to mention that DeLonge had to go for painkillers rehab. Also DJ AM, the other survivor of the plane crash, eventually died after committing suicide. This was a great loss for Travis as well. Was Plus 44 mentioned at all? I don't think so. Travis toured with a broken arm on that tour along with Mark. (He previously did with a broken foot. I got to see both of those tours but I digressed)
Fher Oneeightytwo I thought am died in the crash?
@@Juice5522 He was the other survivor. He recovered and appeared as himself in the Iron Man 2 film. The movie was released the following year 2010 after he committed suicide. Towards the end of the credits, the movie was dedicated to his memory.
I love both bands, new or old blink still good, +44, boxcar, angels will always bring back good memories
Sum 41 actually has a meaning. The band was formed on the 41st day of their summer vacation when they went to warped tour
I remember watching a show where they were being interviewed and tom Delong was ignoring every question. I think Mark Hoppus thought the cameras were off or something because he was telling an interviewer that he hates his band.
what are the backtrack songs used?
Would really appreciate any indication! The instrumental are fire!
Tom is of the few singers that could sing horrible live and still be awesome to watch.
Still the most amazing and ever ! But Tom will forever be my fav
My first ever email address back in 1999 ended with 182 and i still use to this day
Hope I live long enough to see the movie
Tom's BACK!!!
Can someone tell me the songs playing on the back? Please? 🥰
I'm really surprised this didn't even mention +44 at all. Tom and Mark went and did that project while Tom was doing Angels and it was actually a super sick project. Their one full length was fantastic
Wish we got one more album from them during their prime
Truthfully, Tom had to move on from Blink. I’m glad he’s following his passion. So far he is proving everyone wrong about all this UFO stuff. And AVA is a good Rock band. Suits him.
Alexis Rodriguez proving everyone wrong about this ufo stuff? Are you sharing crack with Tom
Conor S lol dude he literally is part of government that studies UFOs and helped confirm that ufo video is real even the US navy confirmed it was real. Have you been living under a rock or something?
@@conors4430 Because of Tom, the US government came out and publicly admitted the UFO phenomena
@@Iceypatek you're literally brainwashed.
Rik Curry brainwashed how? Care to explain?
Say what you will about Tom but he never would have turned the band into a nostalgic act. Playing their 90s hits on morning talk shows in the late 2010s.
Always been a fan of Travis and Mark.
can anyone tell me the band and the song playing throughout the entire video?? it's amazing
Snake Charmer prolly my fav song on Neighbourhood album
Yep, went to Fontana JR. High w Travis. Knew him very well. Feeble, to Aquabats, to blink, after those two sit-ins. He couldn’t handle the Mormon dudes from Aquabats, even though he used to go to good ol Mormon youth events, as a youngin w me and my brothers. In fact, he was bf’s w my brother Mike back then. The dudes from AB, were too geeky. Can’t say nothing bad about the guy. He’s pretty damn amazing, and has earned his way to the top through mad tenacity, and dedication! Luv ya bro.
The “Tom is out” message is from the 2005 hiatus
Never knew any of this information
You could make a vid on Tragic Details of any successful band
that’s what they’ve been doing.
Travis had said he wished Yom would just have the balls to leave the band and do his own thing but he never said Tom was only doing it for the money😐
what's the background song called?
I love how Mark gets mad about Box Car Racer but ends up doing +44
You’re info is so jacked bro, Toms always been obsessed with UFO and other myths, he repeatedly took off to go search for Bigfoot or watch Area 51 trying to include band members and others from the start champ, it’s not new. He read a book about UFOs in elementary school and had more hooked ever since.
Its just wasn't the same. To me it was like too much time has passed... this band was there throughout my entire schooling career. Im from california
so i heard Cheshire Cat and Dude Ranch in elementary school thanks to older brothers. In Jr. High Enema and Toward the start of high school my summer of ending 8th grade TOYPAJ was the soundtrack to my freshman year. Boxcar came in 10th Grade and Self Titled Came Jr. Year. They went on hiatus the year i graduated so that was my closing. i mean Tom to me is irreplaceable. So as i left high school i kinda left blink it honestly broke my heart but as with all things you grow up and miss the memories because the music is tied to so many moments in my life but you move on. You revisit the memories when your nostalgia kicks in and you play the records. I still play my dude ranch vinyl every once in a while or when anything comes up on my apple music shuffle i give them a listen but i can't listen to the new stuff because it doesn't relate to me i listened to neighborhoods and i loved up all night and after midnight but that's pretty much it. Its Kinda Like your parents break up and you love your mom and dad they both move on to new people and you respect their choices but that new person could never replace your mom or dad. Sorry Matt
Blink 182 or Green Day?
Blink 182: Like
Green Day: Comment 💚
I love Green Day not a huge Blink 182 fan
You forgot to mention when they split, Mark Hoppus formed +44 and release an album in 2006 totally dedicated to Tom. There´s a song "No It Isn´t" can really show that
Surprised they didn't mention +44. Pretty significant Barker and Hoppus collaboration during the hiatus
Whats the background music??
Its a good day to be a blink fan
Come on can’t even say DJ AM’s name, his name is on the album cover for gods sake.
Background music!!??? Have been throu all comments but no answer
Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer Tour is ON!! Wish Blink-182 was going to be there - now that would be a hella mega tour.
Enema Of The State Is The Best Album & Freaking Love all Their Songs BLINK 182 & We Freaking Miss Tom Delong Ur always Welcome. 🏁
There such a great band and seem like such great people in general and im soo glad travis didnt die
Can we stop pretending that Box Car Racer was Travis's band? BCR was a solo project started by Tom, which was actually an acoustic project to begin with. Travis only played drums because Tom couldn't, and Tom didn't want to hire a session drummer.
Did people really say it was Travis’ band? I assumed it was well known it was just a side project by Tom with Travis on sticks.
Travis just keeps giving Death the middle finger
I have been a fan of blink 182 for over 25 years and am sorry that everything turned out this way. I think dude ranch is the best album but I like them all. I don't think they have bad songs. i love them all
Why does every video have to have like 60 ads ..
whats the song at 4:22?
Mark Hoppus was born in my home town!
Leaving out Dogs Eating Dogs EP. that record was 🔥
Producer Jerry Finn was in the same flight with Travis and DJ AM, unfortunately Jerry Finn did not survive the crash. RIP Jerry Finn he helped many Punk Bands produce the best hits in the 90’s. RIP DJ AM
