- Doug Berry of the Eastern Sierra Region of California and Nevada visits the massive boulders in Inyo County, California at the Alabama Hills. Kellie Zuniga, Curator of the Mineral County Museum of Hawthorne, Nevada comes along on this scenic adventure hike. Date of Adventure 1-28-2024
For 35 years I have driven past the Alabama Hills turn off on 395 South on the way home from Mammoth but was always in a " hurry " now I have been there with you and Kelli ! Having her in the foreground sure helped to highlight how huge some of those Boulders are! Amazing Vistas as usual loved the silence and of course NO people again ! Thank you Doug
We like to go to the more secluded places, at least when it comes to the outdoors. Honored to have you along Marcus.
Your videos are a good length, and the eastern Sierra never disappoints, what more could you ask for.... Oh yeah, the two great hosts. Here's to the algorith....take care.
Thank you so much, very much appreciate you!
It's a good thing that the long, winding road has shoulders along some areas.😳 Except for the running water, the footsteps, and a wee bit of wind, the stillness, and stark nature of the place is simply mesmerizing.☺️ OMG, the boulders are absolutely ginormous! They absolutely do look wedged in place... It was nice to see some hearty, plant life flourishing amid the Alabama Hills. Shucks, we didn't get to see what you had for lunch, and where you had it, Doug... let alone, what type of 🍪 🍪 🍪 you consumed... **Seriously, this adventure was totally delightful, and very informative. 🤗👏🏻 Thank you Doug and Kellie, so much, for taking us along, and giving us a close glimpse of such a rugged environment... another, great video, Doug... 🪨 🪨 🤠👏🏻👏🏻
Hi Rhonda! Rest assured the cookies were good. Kellie always puts together a good spread for a lunch break. And you guessed it, the wild horses were for you! I got some other critters on video today, by sheer accident that I will share soon. I love the huge boulders in that environment; just fascinating! Trying to squeeze in another project before the work week is finished. Enjoy your family and friends this weekend!🐐🐏🫏🐂🐇
@@CalNeva I know it. Sometimes there aren't enough hours... I am already *looking forward to the next video. Your videos are compelling, and at the same time, they are soothing and relaxing. We learn, in a very interesting, "hands-on" way... I'm so glad that you enjoyed your nice lunch, and your cookies, Doug.👏🏻🤠👏🏻 Have a lovely, enjoyable weekend... 🏡 🌞
That was a fun hike! Beautiful weather that day.
Yes, not like yesterday!
Grateful for your coverage
of that area! Came close to visiting that area last October,
heard there's plenty of camp spots there! As always, liken the lichen !
Hi Tim, it was great to talk with you today!
Awesome to see the wild horses. So glad you were able to capture them. Enjoyed the scenery very much. I think Kelli needs to give a cookie receipe sometime. Lol
Thank you Jennifer, I will put more animals in the intros for you.
Just getting caught up, thanks Doug and Kellie for all the fun adventures..Kellie dont give up the cookie recipe. It might take the mystic away and we will discover your just a mere mortal😅.the legend of Doug and Kellie lives on

Hi Casey, we just got back from the snow, it was gorgeous. Hope your work and family is going well my hard working friend!
@@CalNeva yes .all is good thank you.stay warm with your stormy krome .r
Hey guys nice scenic trip through the Alabama Hills. Countless Hollywood Western movies were made here. Always
noticed those boulders and the east side of the Sierra mountain range in those movie's background. From what I know
those many boulders are weather worn molten magma type rock about 85 million years old. Very surreal looking rock
IMHO. That was some sketchy bridge crossing over that snowmelt creek. Fantastic walk , with all those plants along the
way too. Great video guys!
Thank you, hope you are keeping warm in Chicago my friend!
@@CalNeva Unseasonably warm for February Doug and loving it!
@@hestheMaster Enjoy it my friend!
Nice. - of course a lot of famous old Westerns filmed there, thinking there's a museum with filming theme in town. Enjoy.
Yes so true Steven! Enjoy your weekend on the water.
The detour sign was there my last visit 9/2023. I thought the narrow ( Tuttle Creek) road you took was a great scenic drive. P.S the Portuguese Joe Campground in the area was named after Jose Pires, the real name of the “town character” who lived in the area from 1903 until he died in 1960, Pires was just one of the many tramps who camped on the western edge of town. Good-natured and hospitable, he had a reputation as a local Robin Hood who stole turkeys from neighboring ranches during Christmas week to give
them to needy families. Mr. Pires has a gravestone in the Mount Whitney Cemetery.
Thank you for all the good info about Jose! Very thought provoking and much appreciated!
Hi Brother Doug and Kellie !
I figured this video would be great when you mentioned it the other day, and you did not disappoint! So wonderful to hike around there again, and I didn't even break a sweat 😅 ! I do a lot of couch hiking these days, haha. Some of the places you showed on the hike I recognized, like that boulder cave you went into, but other places I've never seen before. Don't remember that arch over the little stream. That's the thing about this place, you can explore all over and still not discover everything there is to find. Something new round every corner, like Petula Clark sang!
This was so much fun my Brother, thank you and Kellie too! ❤
Hi Brother! Isn't Petula Clark the gal that sang "Downtown"? Happy to take you back to one of your old stomping grounds again. Just got back from getting slammed by the Pineapple Express atmospheric river, editing new video right now. Lot of blowing snow...
Hey Brother , yes she's the one who sang "Downtown", and tons of others. First record I ever bought was by her on a 45 rpm , haha!
Say, I didn't get any notification of your reply, also none for the short. I tried to send a comment on that, but it disappeared. Let's see if this comment shows 🇺🇸
@@Brother_D_therail Hi Dick, I was busy working on our latest video. We went out into the storm with our skis and snowshoes yesterday. Car would not start on the pass back ....it got sketchy....our worst flop trip yet, but it WAS fun! Will try to publish it tonight, am in the thick of my edit now ...wear a coat on your couch when you watch it my Brother!
1940 High Sierra with Humphrey Bogart. The last segment of the movie had them racing on this road when it was unpaved dirt all the way up to Whitney Portal for the shootout scene. Just before the turn off to the left to get to Lone Pine Campground there are dirt roads to the right. They end a Lone Pine Creek. The when they were making or paving this road the road crews threw a lot of their discards over the edge toward the creek. Car parts from those days and such. Camping among the rocks is not allowed any more.
How interesting, thank you Joseph. I am imagining the road unpaved thanks to you!
