  • Doug Berry of the Eastern Sierra region of California and Nevada visits the Bowers Mansion in the Washoe Valley of Nevada. Kellie Zuniga, curator of the nearby Mineral County Museum of Hawthorne, Nevada comes along and adds her insights. 500 Nevada families donated period furniture for the mansion, built in 1863 from riches from the Comstock Lode near Virginia City at Gold Hill. The mansion was a popular party destination between 1873-1875. Now a part of a Washoe County Regional Park, it is open to the public for tours, outdoor activities, and swimming during the summer season.

      Well congrats Dana, I'm sure you will learn and make new connections. I was going to grow an okra patch, but a dead tree is in the way. This year I am mostly tending my little vineyard and maintaining perennials; though I grow more herbs than Kellie who has the good garden patch. A lot of home repairs, but next year will have okra patch; easy to grow in the heat. 🩵🍇🐛🪱🦋🐞🐾

    Such an awesome part of the world. Simply beautiful. Those rocks or elevated boulders used to get in carriages or horses are referred to as “upping stones”. A phrase coined by the British and are a common sight in front of old mansions and buildings especially out east in older cities like Philadelphia. Many still remain and some people even put mailboxes on them now.

    • @CalNeva
      @CalNeva  Місяць тому +2

      Hi Carl! So true, I saw several "Upping Stones" in Philadelphia in the Northern Liberties neighborhood. They also had metal numbers on the houses because they used to subscribe to different private fire fighting services. Some of the narrow streets were paved with old ship ballast stones...out West we usually just pave our streets with gold instead. Hope the steel business treating you well, seems all the metals, even steel keep going up up up. Enjoy your next globe trotting adventure Carl!

    What a ***glorious piece of land, with the wildlife living, and grazing nearby. I'm sorry the home wasn't open. I bet it is gorgeously decorated. I also wonder whose furnishings are inside. The mansion is so lovely. From the outside, it's not as ornate as some of the Newport mansions, IMO... which I think is a plus. Of course, who knows about the inside? *Also, the land, including what's on it, is priceless... 💰 Thank you, Doug and Kellie, for filling us in on so many details, about the setting, and the history connected. What an absolutely sad ending for Sandy. He died so young, after losing it all. That's also especially tragic about their children. The wife certainly had a doomed fate, it seems, particularly since she must have been somewhat ostentatious. Still, it was a burst bubble, in all ways, she endured. Thank you both, for taking us along. I enjoyed this video, from start to finish. I am going to look this family up online. I believe that is the best tribute to a video, Doug. TERRIFIC

      Hello Rhonda! Another excellent and complete review, thank you. I am intrigued by the Newport comment; I want to visit there now. "Ostentatious", that was her strongest weakness. I have noticed those who grew up dirt poor are often fixated on material security over true happiness. The furniture inside was all donated by 500 Nevada citizens! There are videos online for that to see. The characters of this story are so worthy of investigation; in fact there has been a movie made of them (back when good movies were still being made)...perhaps you could find it? An interesting story all around. Many people had good times swimming and enjoying the grounds. 🇺🇸🩵🙏✌️🐴🫏🐎

      @@CalNeva Thank you, for these extra tidbits of info. That's intriguing. *I am definitely planning on researching them. I suppose that's true. To have nothing, gain riches, and then lose them is to go full circle. Fortunately, someone like Dolly Parton has never forgotten her roots, and is so generous. It appears this woman saw things differently. This was so interesting. Thank you, so much, Doug. Have a wonderful evening. 🤠🌞👏🏻

      Yes, many of the old school country singers are like that. For example, Harold Jenkins, known on stage as "Conway Twitty" (Conway, AR / Twitty, TX) always had his home open for his fans who had built his fortune for him. And he never forgot that he and Elvis Presley were nobody compared to his saviour the carpenter from the tribe of Yahudah of Galil; Messiah Yahoshua (Jesus) of Israel. The greatest of the entertainers and the wealthy are very humble and low key people who never forget where they are from, where they are at, and where they are going.

    Hey y’all, welcome to our neck of the woods! Loved the footage at the Bowers Mansion. As many times as I’ve been there, I have to admit I’ve never been to/stopped at the pool. That fenced off hot springs looks incredible, wish they’d open that up again for public use! It would’ve been incredible to see this place before the highway was built. I know they do tours of the inside of the house, but I’ve always refrained because none of the interior is original. Thank you for this great video as always! -G

    Beautiful country. The Bower's Mansion is where the Silver State Marathon I ran in started. It went around Washoe Lake. At the finish line various sponsoring companies donated more refreshments than the runners could eat or drink. For those that drink alcohol there was an entire open sided Coors beer truck handing out whatever someone needed. They sent nicely made glossy folders showing every finisher's name and place printed along with advertisements of the various sponsors. Nevada did it right! 17:45 The "Widow"Watch" was a feature in New England whaling Captain's homes. When East coast folks moved around the horn to the West the style came with them. Widow Watches can be found inland from the Pacific some distance. This is the farthest inland from the Pacific I have seen. The Bower'a site says using the pool is $5.00 per person when it's open.

      I found Kellie around Area 51 a few years back, we had to give her a new identity in her new life on planet earth. She does know a lot about the stars and can identify many of them, and she also watches the moon phases to keep time the old fashioned way. No one can honestly say what planet Kellie came from, but we get along great so who is complaining? She likes to hike and garden, but not too keen on fishing. Have a great one my friend.

    Big fan here -- fan of you guys and of that country. I wish you could go back when the mansion is open, and show us what it's like inside. There's a book about Eilley, "City of Illusion," you might like. She and Persia went to see Queen Victoria, but the queen wasn't agreeable. Eilley's washtubs were right over a silver deposit that was so rich that there was a room with solid silver floor, walls, ceiling. How did she lose it all? Have you done a video about Alpine County? Alabama Hills? All those Western movies and TV shows made up there? Keep up the good work! --charles johnson, sacramento

      Hi Charles! Sacramento; so close, I shop there every so often. We did one in Alabama Hills last summer....but doing a video on Alpine County is a great idea. It is a tiny and rather poor county that has to put up with a bossy guy who used to be the manager of Plump Jack Wines before the wealth of the Getty family in San Francisco's Pacific Heights launched him on a career which was the catalyst for the biggest out migration in the Golden State! Alison Bowers lost her wealth by poor financial decisions; was in debt and built onto the mansion which caused her to be insolvent. Honored to have you as a fan! 😎

      Hello again Sueann! Thank you. Well, the mines were not producing. This was a few years after they traveled to Europe and brought back a mansion full of costly furniture. After Sandy died, she started to host parties at the mansion to make ends meet. She made a bad decision to spend more money adding another floor to the mansion after she was already in debt. It went to court concerning her debt and she lost. The founder of Reno purchased it for pennies on the dollar and she started prognosticating as a profession. She became destitute and California and Nevada were fighting over whose responsibility she was. California took her in and she ended up in the Bay Area on the coast, where she died and was cremated in Oakland. Perhaps she assumed she would always remain wealthy?
