Milwaukee is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin on Lake Michigan's western shore. It's known for its breweries, many of which offer tours chronicling its role in the beer industry. Overlooking the Menomonee River, the Harley-Davidson Museum displays classic motorcycles, including one of Elvis Presley’s. Nearby is the Milwaukee Public Museum, with its large-scale European Village and a recreation of old Milwaukee.
The artsy East Town is cultural hub with the strikingly modern Milwaukee Art Museum, as well as family friendly sites like the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum and Discovery World. Upscale global eateries and chic bars make for buzzy nightlife, while concerts, comedy and drama are staged at the Marcus Center for Performing Arts and the plush Pabst Theater. Cathedral Square Park hosts festivals and a farmers’ market.
The Historic Third Ward is one of the city’s creative hubs, home to art galleries and studios in former warehouses, and performing arts venues like the Broadway Theater Center. Restaurants are upscale and trendy, and patio dining is popular. Indie boutiques sell fashion and homeware, while the indoor Milwaukee Public Market has produce, cheese and fish vendors. Henry W. Maier Festival Park hosts events and concerts.
Shorewood is a village in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 13,162 at the 2010 census. Howell Raines of The New York Times said in 1979 that "[t]his maple-studded town on Lake Michigan dotes on its reputation as Milwaukee's most liberal suburb."
The small, laid-back Downer Woods neighborhood is home to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus. The area encompasses the Manfred Olson Planetarium, Golda Meir Library and Thomas A. Greene Geological Museum. Also on campus, the Downer Woods Natural Area is an enclosed forested area lined with trails. Casual, student-friendly restaurants serve quick eats, from pizza to tacos.
Historic Water Tower Neighborhood was founded in 1973 (originally under the name Water Tower Landmark Trust) to promote “the preservation and enhancement of the unique residential character of the neighborhood.”
