The name "Milwaukee" comes from the Algonquian word millioke, meaning "good", "beautiful", and "pleasant land".
Milwaukee traces its roots back to the early 19th century when it was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Menominee, Potawatomi, and Ojibwe. The region's strategic location at the confluence of the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers attracted European explorers and fur traders.
The official founding of Milwaukee dates back to 1846, when Solomon Juneau, Byron Kilbourn, and George H. Walker established the Town of Juneau, which would later become the city we know today. The completion of the Erie Canal and the subsequent influx of settlers from the eastern United States contributed to the city's rapid growth.
Milwaukee's location on Lake Michigan and its access to water transportation played a crucial role in its development as a major industrial hub. The city became known for its breweries, earning it the nickname 'Brew City.' Iconic breweries such as Miller, Pabst, and Schlitz emerged, shaping Milwaukee's identity and making it a leading producer of beer.
As Milwaukee flourished, it experienced significant waves of immigration, particularly from Germany and Poland, which greatly influenced the city's culture, architecture, and traditions. The city's diverse population added to its vibrant character, fostering a rich tapestry of festivals, music, and culinary delights.
Today, Milwaukee stands as a dynamic metropolis that seamlessly blends its industrial past with a modern and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Its stunning lakefront, thriving arts scene, sports teams, and renowned festivals like Summerfest make it a destination brimming with cultural offerings and entertainment.
As of the census of 2020, the population was 577,222.
Ethnically, the population was 20.1% Hispanic or Latino of any race. When grouping both Hispanic and non-Hispanic people together by race, the city was 38.6% Black or African American, 36.1% White, 5.2% Asian, 0.9% Native American, 9.0% from other races, and 10.1% from two or more races.
The median income for a household in the city was $43,125, and the per capita income for the city was $24,167. About 24.6% of the population were below the poverty line,

What a great city to visit so much to do.
I am from Seattle which has likely the most beautiful setting of any city in America but architecturally we can't hold a candle to Milwaukie. The number of beautifully preserved antique buildings is amazing. I think block per block this may be the most beautiful city in America. I am really surprised! All those incredible old mansions and I was stunned to actually see hills there.
Milwaukee. This is not Oregon. However, with it's proximity to Chicago--which in my opinion has the world's best skyline and architecture--has an influence in that department on Milwaukee. It justs has great architecture other cities don't have.
I am going to disagree with you, I think Chicago is the prettiest city in the US, the skyline alone is stunning. I have been to Seattle for business and it is beautiful no doubt especially with the gorgeous mountain backdrop but Chicago with its size and beautiful architecture off of Lake Michigan is nearly impossible to beat.
@wchandler2010 unless you go to Milwaukee.
are you on drugs?
Born here, lived here for 31 years and in every state I have lived in (3) and every state I visited business or vacation, I can honestly tell you without the shadow of any doubt that Milwaukee is the most segregated city period. Btw, I was a firefighter/emt here for 13 years. Overtaxed, underpaid, racist and truly hateful people that is until you get them drunk or talk packers football. Never going back.
Love Milwaukee, a great place on a great lake!!!
🤥
Can't wait til I move out there next year
It looks like a very nice city - clean, prosperous and well-maintained...
Looks can be deceiving
lol just wait till you see the inner parts
You only seen one part this city dirty asf trust me I live here
Great and nice building in the center
Looks great!
For anyone wondering, the bird sounds are almost definitely not added in. They're so loud in the summer.
That being said I love it. I work and live near downtown and constantly see rabbits and squirrels everday. A possum lives in the bushes near me. I've even seen a fox and a deer in the area they're driving around
You are correct, nothing is added in (ever)
Thanks for the video.
sure thing chicken wing
lindo vídeo e boa sorte
very nice video and shows me many places I`ve been since moving here in april 1989
Well done
I'd like to offer everyone here a cold beer 🍺
I miss living in Wisconsin

MKE!
i cant wait to drive a 2003 dodge caravan and get AAA :)
you will need AAA if you drive a 2003
What country is this?
USA
Never heard of it but its beautiful.
The land of the free baby, they hate us cuz they ain’t us.
You couldn't drive like that on Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane roads, it would be stop/start, stop/start -- even on a Sunday ❗
That’s what happens when you jam and entire nation into three cities ha ha
Why is there no traffic?
I told them to scram
It's a Sunday so not a weekday
Don't get lost, end up in the bads real quick, I guess every city got one, but cream city is a beauty!
I like driving around in the ghetto but only between 7AM-10AM
@@exploreusacities trash statement.
This was a rare sunny day. Milwaukee is normally cloudy 9 months out of the year.
Sunshine follows everywhere I go
As long as you are not in a t r a s h neighborhood and carrying i left 25 years ago it aint all peaches & cream you see here.
I've been told that living in Milwaukee is indeed nothing but peaches & cream and there are absolutely no problems whatsoever
@exploreusacities hahaha, miltown boys have switches and I'm not talking in their cars. Rats would whip your ass if they catch you slipping
No it's not, but definitely improved in the last 25 years. Lots of new businesses and tourist areas.
Umm, beauty and Milwaukee in the same sentence? Thats very interesting but to each their own 🤷♀️
Where do you live, or where are you from?
@@LoveGod2477 I'm from Wisconsin now on the Westcoast. What about you?
@@samantha32606 Also, from Wisconsin. Living in Illinois. Milwaukee looks like a big suburb, compared to Chicago.
Got people?
Despite being the largest city in Wisconsin with about 570k population, downtown is mainly corporate offices and such. Retail shops are almost nonexistant and most shops downtown are just local restaurants and live theather events.
East side and third ward is where people are at. Downtown is all offices.
Milwaukee has never had the street people presence of a Chicago etc.. but I think must have been a particularly sleepy Sunday because the City has really felt pretty bustling this summer. Finally feels like it's come back to life post-covid.
They are all here:

Also if I'm remembering correctly there was a bit of a heat wave around this time
45 years in milwaukee... its a dirty segragated nasty place. The creator of this video purposely skips over the terrible parts. Do some research b4 moving to milwaukee. And trust no one!
sounds like you should move to a better neighborhood
Including you?
This dt. You must be nofe side
Oh i did move. Hour away. And yes including me
I was southside. Northside worse but not by much.
