Don't worry. I play a multitude of games and still cannot win original Warcraft III vs bots. I can tell you that most games felt like this for me at first and then i usually figure them out bit by bit and start playing more efficiently.

there was one game i played that's very similar to these strategy games, but it beats this in terms of simplicity, and that was dungeon siege 2, it was a story based game but you also had to do side quests for extra experience, the 3 main classes were: archery, melee, and mage, that's it, i used to have one archer and one mage behind the group, and 2 melee upfront, one of them would use a shield and one handed sword while the other would use a 2 handed one, those ones would strike harder, the only trade off was speed. now in terms of combat you only needed to worry about keeping your party alive by pressing the H key for healing and the M key for mana, they were also a way to teach each member to heal each other with magic, and that's what i used to save healing potions. along the way you would also find equipment for your warriors and all you had to do is swap old armor for new ones according to the value number that it has on it, and that rule applies to everything that your warrior wears from: the boots to the helmets and the game would only ever allow you to equip armor that was suited for each class.

@ Not true, mobas existed in SC with Aeon of Strife sure, but DOTA -- the most influential which inspired the creation of many mobas -- still made it's debut in WC3. Many of the mechanics you see in DOTA 2 are WC3-inspired; the heroes they use, couriers, denying last hits, etc. SC may've been earlier but it wasn't the most influential.
