I've just found you Mr. Geo...I'm 50 now, and have been shaving with Gillette Mach3 for the last 25 years or so. Sooooo much landfill...I'm kind of ashamed! I have been wet shaving for two years thanks to your videos and guidance. I mostly use a safety razor for time and convenience sake. However when I am coming off of two to for four weeks of leave or even three days for that matter I take my time and set up for a good straight razor shave!!! Thank you for all of your hard work to show us the PROPER way to shave.
These are some pretty informative videos. I'm now have 12 shaves (and counting) with a straight razor. I also haven't nicked myself or had any serious razor burn since my second SR shave. The one odd thing with me though is that 'against the grain' on my jawline goes from ear to chin, not the way yours does. So, once I finished, I just used my Merkur 25C to go from ear to chin. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to go against the grain, ear to chin, on my jawline and not injure myself.

Hi Geo….years ago I tried for the first time a straight razor shave and being completely unskilled in how to use one I cut myself pretty good just below my left ear and bleed like a stuck pig for a few minutes before it stopped and my wife said and I quote “Get rid of that damn thing!!!” and I haven’t done a straight razor shave since, of course this was before UA-cam or any other media that we have today. To be perfectly honest I want to try my hand at it again but I’m somewhat scared because I don’t have the skills to do it much less the money to get a quality razor and the equipment to keep it in working condition. I have considered a shavette razor since their cheaper and you don’t have to horn or strop it to maintain an edge…..any suggestions?
Sure, many shavers start with a shavette, then once mastered, jump to a traditional straight razor. Have fun with it. Start with the cheeks, then progress.
antonio armijo It should be stropped either before or some guys prefer after each use, when you need to hone the razor depends on a few things but with every day use it will probably end up between 3-6 months
antonio armijo I forgot to say if you aren't comfortable with honing a razor yourself you could always send it in for a honing when it needs to be done. But you will definitely need to own a strop if you want to shave with a straight razor
You can shave with it right out of the box as I demonstrate here, and then it should be stropped before every shave. When the strop no longer gets it sharp enough to shave with then you can refresh it on a Naniwa 12K Stone. Watch this video: shavenation.com/collections/naniwa-super-stones
I have exactly the same razor, and when the leather strop just isn't enough anymore... Well, I'm the lucky owner of a vintage natural combo Belgian Coticule / BBW (Belgian Blue Whetstone) of selected quality. :) I'm into the italian traditional shaving, and I've just discovered your channel. I'm loving it! Just one little advice that works great for me: I always start with a wet face, more so with a straight razor.
How does the sharpness compared to say other straight razors that are ready to shave with. From how loud it was it almost seems like it was a little dull
Great video geo! I learned some great pointers. I'm new to the game of straight razor shaving and the 1st time I used a ready to shave straight my face pretty much looked like it was hit with a meat grinder. Not a nice site to say the least. Hopefully 2nd time around which will be later on today, I'll get better results. Thanks again my man.
Hi Geo. I shaved for the 3rd time on the 4th of July using my straight and I can see an improvement from the first time around . Less nicks and redness. My confidence level using the straight is getting up there slowly but surely. Thanks for the advice brother. Hope you had a great 4th.
Wow. That is a great video. I mailed you a while back checking on how shave ready the razor is out of the box. I should have seen this video earlier. What would you recommend as a kit to go along with this shave Nation straight razor for maintaining the edge?
I need to know two things: 1. Why do we buy some standard straight razors and have trouble sharpening it and using the leather stripe to keep them sharp, when we can use some shavettes and skip all the sharpening processes? 2. This razor doesn't use some wider shaving than some shavette. I can't see that you use the whole width of this razor to shave your face. You use only one part of it, the same width as if you use shavette. So, why would we bother to have some standard straight razor, when we can just use a half of a standard blade and be carefree, regarding sharpening some standard straight razor?
I, too, always thought that the shavette was more practical than the traditional straight razor. You get the same experience with it and it doesn't require religious stropping and honing every now and then. The idea of replaceable blades really has evolved shaving.
I always use a safety razor when i shave, but I'm interested in trying out a straight razor, even though I don't really know how to maintain a straight razor, I still want to try and learn. If I were to buy a safety razor, what kind of stone and strop would you recommend I buy to use so i can keep my straight razor sharpend and in good shape , And if there is anything else, what else would you recommend that I buy besides a strop and stone to maintain my straight razor sharpness?
Question for you, you obviously tried many more razors than me. I'm still on my first - a Merkur 33C - and its great, but can't help wonder if there's better.
