Good video. I bought a Boker 8/8 and I went through pretty much the same experience that you did. I tried shaving with the factory edge (mine was doing a midiocre HHT) but the shaving was pretty bad. I looked at the edge with the scope and I discover lots of chips at the edge. I joined the edge with soft wood, and to my surprise, the edge folded as if it were too thin. Mine also had a slight frawn but I decided to work around it.
Hi there, I actually just received an email from Böker who confirmed an issue with the steel quality, potentially due to incorrect thermal treatment. Will get additional news in coming days.
@@FroggyShave okay, just as I though. The description on the Boker’s site is a bit misleading if not paying attention. Anyway, mines (2x) will arrive tomorrow, I wonder if they are consistent with my other 6x other modern Bokers.
Just got a Boker Celebrated myself. I could shave with it out of the box. But the last part, where the heel is, was really poorly worked on, the edge flattening out back there. I think they just machine hone those babies.
Definitely machine honed! I got a Böker celebrated few years ago and was also shaved ready, I was hoping it'd be normal for all of them but definitely not this past one...
Something with the heat treatment. Either it went wrong when treated or the blade heated up too much after it was heat treated from sharpening or shaping.
I had it ones with a rigarazor. Is send it back to the maker and he confirmed me that the razor was not good. It was a thungsten steel razor. He would make me a new one but just send me the old one back. What he did with it I don’t know but now is the razor oke. Maybe he re-heated the razor again and now it’s good.
These things are not cheap, and Boker is a major company worldwide. Why should anyone have to put in so much effort to get their product into a useable condition?
Wow, I've never seen such a chiped edge. It happened to me once ,with a vintage swedish razor but the chips were visible after sharpening, I concluded it was my fault, I pressed to hard in the razor wille honing.
That kind of chipping mostly I have them when I use slurry (specially with coticule) and when I do circles when honing. I stop both of them. But in your case I'm leaning more to the steel. I know Boker is a reputable brand maybe the one you have is a factory defect. I have a Dovo Inox razor that when I shave half way threw the shave the blade goes completely dull !!! I've emailed Dovo they never answered ! I suggest send Boker an email maybe they will reply to you with an answer.
Wow that's interesting to get this with a specific slurry... could be indeed due to style type or slurry have small bits in it. I'll give another shave or two with it and will look at the edge with microscope again, hopefully it won't have any microchips again.
Like I told you need a larger bevel to use tape but anyway the bevel is totally not uniform and this will affect the shave even if yuo can't notice because you didn't prove the same blade with a uniform bevel! Clearly if you continue to hone you can set the bevelalso without killing butvyou must know when to stop😂. Did you kill the edge for setting the knew bevel? Did you notice is not even the bevel?
Dear Zen, The bevel has been "killed" as you said, 3 times already and it didn't help. The bevel is not uniform as, I believe, Böker use a conical wheel to factory hone their razors.
@@FroggyShave I have the same blade so have been remained only 2 possibility! 1- You have over -honed the razor also after the killing manouvre! Remember you need to dull the razor and 3 times could not be enough! Sometimes! 2- A problem of construction or material. The blade has been tempered badly or treating bad during the gliding!!! Or other treatment! OR IT WAS a defective blank of steel! Consider that when you do circle strokes it is very easy to chip the blade of a fully extra hollow! Consider that treatment can damage the blade!
Very rare to see that much microchipping, could be steel issue or heat treat issue. I would kill the edge and start over at 1k for fresh bevel on fresh layer of steel and if it still chips then contact Boker for a new one. I wish more of the old manufacturers were up and running, Dorko, Filarmonica, Heljestrand so many great ones.
Yep, I actually re-created a new bevel on this one starting with an Atoma 600 diamond stone. I'm hoping it was only a factory angle issue... Time will tell... Definitely agree with you on old brands...
@@michaelbarbera1616 if you find one in 7/8 or 8/8 go for it bro. My best friend has it and Mehl performs better than my double temple Fili and better than his Medallon Taurino Fili too. Burned steel edge from sharpening on a wheel or a belt sander after a couple of sharpening 's to get rid of the bad steel it should be fine. Beautiful razor by the way I just may pick up one not many new razor makes catch my eye, this one has.
Thx mate, you're probably correct (I hope). I'll give another shave or two with it and will look at the edge with microscope again, hopefully it won't have any microchips again.
You are totally wrong! I have the correct explanation! But it is not easy to understand if you are not a veteran!. You have over honed what was a secobdary bevel so rhe apex colapsed! There is no doubt. The bevel was properly set by factory so when you put it on the 1000 have over honed! You should have done totally different! In these case you have 4 options. 1.The best was to not reset the bevel. 2. But if you choose to reset you must not use tape! And second you must kill the edge! If you want to use tape you must create a new bevel! Whitout tape! On stone 220 grit! That it is possible but fool in my opinion! 😂 You have put a tape and thats the worst mistake and most common mistake all do! Because it is an extra full hollow it has collapsed! 👉 I have the same identical🤧square blade! 😅 And I know what I said!🙄 Create a new bevel it is not setting a bevel!!! If the apex was less thin it would have not happened! Now you have to dull the blade removing all the microchips!!!😮 and start again! My adbice it is to not copy what you see on you tube!🎉🎉🎉 Bye!
It's always amazing to read your wise comments, I'm sure one day I'll learn from them in the hope of reaching your level of veteran knowledge. 👍 Thank you for taking the time to support my channel. 😊

@FroggyShave Nice! Would be interesting to hear more updates from your side on how Boker is solving this complain!

Question, do you know what steel Boker used? And what is the specified hardness on the steel? I am temped to buy one as well.
