A found a small niche Oldschool Turkish barber shop in the city i live in. I decided I wanted to try shaving old-school as my grandpa did, so decided to get a haircut and a shave. Man, that straight razor shave from a pro is unlike anything. Now I do it around 4 times a year and on special occasions. He eventually convinced me in getting a DE-shave and even gave me a discount price since I've been a regular customer. I have not regretted it since. He even learned me a technique on keeping the blades sharp if you don't have a buffing belt, by using the skin of your arm. I have been shaving with DE razor for 3 years, And I have still not gone through my first package of blades! Then again my facial hair grows quite slowly. But it has indeed saved me quite a lot of expenses! + you feel much more like a gentleman. Since I have been mostly self-learned, this video still taught me a thing or two about shaving which is great!
I learned to shave with my dad's safety razor over fifty years ago. I eave used a straightedge razor when I was participating in Civil War re-enacting. I find that a good shave takes time and experience and most of what you have shown is the correct way of handling any razor.
I have been using a double edge razor for about 2 years and I have been always satisfied of the result. Also I have bought 20 cartridges of Wilkinson Sword blades since I started, for about 10 bucks, and I still have 12 more cartridges in which there are 5 blades. The process it’s so simple and satisfying as well as for the materials which are so lasting. I fully recommend this way of shaving!
Just used a safety razor for the first time. What an experience! Holding the steel razor feels much better than handling the plastic razors. And then the result is very satisfying, no cuts, no swollen skin. Very recommended!
I started shaving with a safety razor and have used it for quite some time. It feels great, and I recommend it for everyone. It is clearly the superior shaving method. Great video as always.

I'm 58 and have a heavy beard, the double edge is the only thing I use. Iv'e tried the cartridge junk and it plugged up in one pass. Iv'e tried the electric and I had to go over my face many times and missed spots everywhere. My dad gave me his old double edge when I was in my teens (it's probably as old as I am) And I still use it. My younger brother who is more haired than me wants one too. I still hate shaving, but a beard is much more irritating.

Great video. I have been using DE razors for over 10 years now. Another tip, especially if you live in a hard water area, is to ensure you keep the razor clean by every so often placing the razor parts in boiled water and one part white vinegar in a bowl for at least 1 hour, then using toothpaste and toothbrush give it a good scrub and let it dry. It will leave the razor polished and gleaming and will last years.
Water cannot be hard unless it is ice. So hard water areas are cold areas? The only way water can be hard is if it gets frozen. Just warm it up and you will have liquid water again!
@@oscarmoreno65 I can't tell if youre being facetious but hard water usually refers to a higher mineral content, which can leave deposits on the body if your razor.
Never put your razor in vinegar. Vinegar is an acid and it'll eat away at the metal. It won't be long before the blade gap, exposure, etc is out of spec. If you want to clean your razor, all you need is dish soap and water.
I started using a safety razor for my face some 5-6 years ago. Back then it took me almost an hour as I went through some 6+ passes going in all sorts of directions and wouldn't stop until it was perfectly smooth. But that technique irritated my skin a lot, because I have very thick, coarse hairs plus very sensitive skin. These days I typically only do one pass (across the grain) and it only takes me 5 minutes. I don't feel I need to go with the grain first if the last time I shaved was the day before. And I can't go against the grain at all without causing some serious issues. It honestly took me a long time to learn how to use a safety razor, but now that I know pretty well how to use it confidently I'm much less likely to cause nicks and razor burns than I used to with cartridge razor. I'm also loving how cheap safety razor blades are and that they come in big packs. I didn't know about the angled technique though and I think I wanna try that. At this point I'm definitely confident enough with my safety razor that I can elaborate on my technique.
I’ve been using a safety razor for the past 10 years. If every man were to discover this, the big razor/shave companies would go out of business. Safety razors are cheaper than what they sell at Walmart or Target, look nicer, last longer and does a better job. I use shaving soap and a brush and leave it on my face for a minute or two before I start shaving. I’ll never go back to those expensive cartridge razors. The razors I get last me for years and cost me under $10 for 100 on Amazon. The brand is, Astra. Glad they have videos like this. Oh, last, but not least, once I’m done, I rinse my face with cold water and follow it up with an amazing shave balm that doesn’t burn and smells like an old fashioned barber shop.
As soon as the image of such a well-groomed man came up on my screen, I knew I had the right video... I think that the double-edged razor would suit me; Thank you for the tutorial, it's given me the confidence to finally purchase one!
I have used a safety razor for 40 years. First because electric razors never worked on me and secondly because it was more environmentally friendly. I have had a full beard for years, but have still used the safety for trimming
So after your video about DE razors, and then this one i bought my first DE safety razor set with a bowl, shavesoap, and brush with badger hair. I was as most i think in the cartridge boat, because i did not know any better. Bu my god, was a DE razer the best investment i ever made. After getting my technique down, i hade never in my life hade a close a shave as with a DE razer, and my face stays clean for up to 3 days. Also the process now of shaving because of the tools involved, the pre shave balm, lathering up your face, shaving, aftershave, has become a peacefull ritual for myself in the morning, i look forward now to shaving. Thats something i never thought possible. + points, my wife absolutly loves it
Solid advice. In regards to the straight razor I actually shaved with one every Saturday morning for over a year and a DE blade during the week. Now several years later I only use the straight razor. In regards to the time it takes, I look at the shave as a ritual. Takes me about 20 minutes to do a great two pass shave. If I don’t make time for a two pass shave, A one shave pass takes just over ten minutes. I have used several brands of electric razors in the past and none of them provided a comfortable shave, however I never had one that you could use wet. I have a very coarse beard, and have found that straight razors provide the most comfortable shave, but they do not shave any closer than cartridge or DE razor.
I have a shaver recently that belonged to my great grandfather that’s at least 80 years old and got Van Der Hagen blades from the store. Seems to work like a champ
I have thick facial hair and sensitive skin. I used to cut myself with gilettes all the time, and my barber refused to do a turkish shave for me because my skin was reddening up midway through. I bought a Safety Razor on a whim and since then I’ve had no issues. I sometimes even shave without cream, and even so i rarely cut anymore.
@@samxd3161 hello! Sorry I missed your message. I use a Feather AS-D2 handle with Rockwell blades. The handle is expensive but well worth it in the long run!
@@tokyoarrow Thank you! Also, if I may suggest something, try the Gillette Skinguard. It delivers on its promise of zero irritation. And I've heard it lasts long (I'm yet to ascertain that personally, since I'm still on my first cartridge). Have a great day!
Prior to using a safety razor for your long term use of shaving, it is both wise and prudent to try the various brands of open razor blades. By trying out the various brands you will find a suitable solution for your type of skin and facial hair growth. Three stages of shaving: One. The pre shave; that is the preparation prior to shaving. Two. The shave. Three. The post shave; that is the aftercare of the shave. The hot towel, hot water is to excite the hair into standing out from the face thus making the hair ready to cut. The brush is used in a circular pattern and just like the hot towel or water, the brush movement helps to mix the soap and lather into the hair, the follicle and onto the skin layers. Three cuts or passes in the the three main directions, no more and no less (a fourth pass may be required if a heavy growth or thicker stubble is seen). Danger areas; lips, under the nose and the Adams apple. Some men require to shave twice per day. If that is the case, shave in morning and at night. UK Army method.
just go shirtless with your veins popping out of your eyeballs. Make sure you get a good workout in before going to the gym so you look hella pumped before your workout at the gym. This is the key to looking good. No accessories necessary
While I wear a beard, trimming up my neckline is critical to looking clean and well-groomed. In that pursuit, I alternate between a safety razor, shavette and my Dovo straight razon. The safety razor is definitely the fastest, and delivers nearly identical results.
Yes! Absolutely true, bearded people shave too, because they shave their necks and upper cheeks- ornamental shaving, instead of a boring complete shave
That's what I'm using lol. The canned stuff loses its lubricating ability pretty quickly. I ordered Tailor of Old shaving cream in a jar so I'll see how well that works out for me.
I use the exact aerosol that he had on the video lol. I use my everyday skin lotion after I wet my face, then I use a shaving soap mixed with the aerosol foam with a brush. The double edge blades I use are the Van Der Hagen. No way am I going to change any of this .
Recently began shaving with a safety razor after years of using an electric razor and I’ll never go back. I love the way my safety razor makes my face feel, and the ritual of shaving feels less like a chore now, ironically considering I have much more to do.
Life changing advice with the wet rotary shave, been struggling with ingrowns on my face from shaving for years, tried everything, this is a game changer! Thank you
This is by far the best tutorial for DE safety razor shaving. I started this a few years ago and have never looked back. If properly done, you can shave daily and keep your skin looking nice. Murdock of London is the brand I use and recommend highly.
I have been shaving with a safety razor for the past 8 months. I decided there was no option of returning back to ‘mac threes’ and so on. I would simply have to learn. I cut myself a few times - and I am sure I will nick myself again - but I am happy I made the change.
Glad to hear using an electric first makes sense because we’ve done that forever to avoid snags or cuts. Thanks for the video ! Look forward to our close shaves.
Bought a Solingen safety razor 10 years ago. It saved me a considerable amount of money, easily in the mid hundreds. Edit: not to mention that it opened the world of razor blades to me, which means I can find the right razor for my skin/beard (Treet, Astra Green, Astra Blue, Bolzano, Derby ... There is only choice and comfort at a fraction of the cost)
I needed this soo bad like a year ago. Was in Berlin at that time, there they have a shop called “DM”. I asked personnel there to help me choose a razor and they suggested double sharp safety razor. I had to find how to use it through trial and error, made & still make a lot of cut but it still gives best result compared to any other alternative. Hopefully now it will be much more pleasant to use, thank you!
I just tried my first shave with a straight razor but got one swipe in and got shaky hands. Before I try again I need to watch shaving videos to remind myself that people do actually survive this process. Thanks for the video 👍
Informative, helpful video! It’s an extra step, but I strongly recommend using a pre-shave oil before applying shaving cream - helps ensure a very smooth, and nick-free experience.
I mainly use Aqua Vela aftershave and I've never had a problem with it drying out my face, the natural oils return rather quickly. The cooling is really nice too.
Before the quarentene i used to shave with a safety razor every week (thick beard, those razors work better in my face). now i just letting the beard grow to see were it gets LoL
Great tutorial. I respectfully suggest, staying away from can shaving foams. Real shaving soaps create a better treatment to protect your skin not to mention the lather. I have a few DE razors to avoid buying an electric. I would suggest an open comb like my Muller Traditional, with the right blades, it mows down even the most difficult growth on the first pass. I then switch to my Merkur 33c to do the finishing passes, the results is equal to any of my straight razors. Rinse with cold water as mentioned and I also use an Alum block. Your pores and skin will thank you, especally if you have sensitive skin or acne. Then a balm. I have some pre shave oils and cream, and they are good, but nothing better than a warm shower can achieve. Really enjoying your content.
Got my first DE Razor today, a Mühle traditional r89, followed this video. I am never going back to a cartridge razor. My face feels so smooth and doesn't have the normal irritation after shaving.
Tried this for the first time. And trust me its way way easier than cartridge razor. Use trimmer before shave if you are feeling unsure, just to make it easier while shaving.
Not only is this the best video on UA-cam on shaving with a double edge razor, but this may be the best and most informative video of all on UA-cam! Thank you!
Shaving against the hair growth is probably one of most satisfying about shaving. I love the baby smooth skin feel it gives after and love hearing blade cut the hair.
Snappy dresser. I like the wardrobe description at the end because even though most of us won't/can't dress that nice it's good to see what goes together well and why, so we're better prepared for the special occasions when we can or should dress extra well.
I haven't used any shaving cream or gel in decades. I use the same hair conditioner for shaving gat I use after I shampoo. It works great and leaves my skin soft and smooth. Never any razor burn or irritation.
Very helpful information on how to get the best shave. I learned more about shaving in this video than I have in anything else I’ve seen on UA-cam. Great job! Thanks for sharing.
My facial hair growth always required me to shave every morning and noon in order to maintain the clean-shaven appearance. Electric razors have never worked. Disposable razors always had to be replaced with a brand new cartridge before starting each shave. For the last decade, I've resolved to using electric clippers, as well as the permanent 5 o'clock shadow that comes with using clippers instead of a shaver. This video has me interested in trying a double-edge razor.
Shaved today. Edwin Jagger DE 89L Razor Bolzano Superinox DE blades La Maison Du Barbier Brush Acca Cappa almond shaving soap (hard) Razo Rock Amici After Shave Splash I used to buy Mach 3. The Bolzano blades aren't cheap, but you can use them for 5-8 shaves. I also use Astra blades for 3-4 shaves. The money I save is ridiculous. The satisfaction I get is incredible.
Amen. My bathroom counter has a Panasonic ES-LA93-K electric wet razor, a vintage Boker Solingen straight razor, and a vintage Dorco DE razor handle with Ti blades, along with various balms, creams, etc.. right next to my colognes.
Very awesome and helpful tutorial! II first tried this method when shaving (It was my armpits where I first tried this method) and I can say that this works 100%. I didn't have a more smoother result at my armpits lastly!
Thanks a lot for such informative video, last month I stopped using Gezillate blade all in one . I started using double edge razors with shaving, and I rembered my father he was in military he was using same traditional shavings same way your video. Thanks!!
this was a really good tutorial, i always thought pulling the skin tight and shaving to cut the hairs under the skin makes ingrown hairs , so ive never really done it that way..
I shave every 2 days for 32 years now and always using aerosol and honestly I never had an issue shaving a side from dull blades. I will try to switch from Razor Mach 3 to safety razor but I don’t see my self using anything but aerosol (I’ve used plain soap on some emergency occasions as well) I totally agree that wet electric shaver is a must have and has to be used first this way your razor blades last up to 2-3 month each.
I've been shaving with a DE safety razor for three years now. I wish I had discovered a safety razor 30 years ago. Besides getting the best shaves I have ever got, its much cheaper and I have less ingrown hairs. I found Wilkinson Sword blades work the best for me.
It really is this simple. Once you get used to it, it becomes routine. Also, you get to invest in a beautiful safety razor handle that just gives the whole procedure a feeling of quality. I'll never ever go back from shaving with safety razors and proper shaving soap.

hey from france i bought one this morning with everything to make my foam, my face is babysmooth like and some hair that was really tricky to get normally but here it's amazing, thank's for your tuto, merci ^^
I'm turning 55 soon, and am really just learning how to shave, having given up the practice in my teens because of the unbearable rashes every time, using a beard trimmer and looking like a bum from then on. It is slightly better today, but mostly because I am taking my time and no longer using those multi-blade cartridges that are just too many razors passing across my skin. In the few times I have shaved completely, I noticed far less irritation with just the disposable single-blade. I am currently and for the first time using a safety razor, and am trying to shave every day, if possible. I think today was the first time I have ever shaved where I didn't draw blood. I did the "two-shave" routine, meaning I reapplied cream to rough areas after first pass rather than just water or dry as in the past. We'll see what tomorrow holds. I don't do the pre-and post-shave routines, other than a hot shower. Those are next. Honestly, though, with the time and expense of shaving, it's like I am renting my face.
I normally get tired of these “gentleman” videos and products because they’ve become such a cliche and really misrepresent the archetype… but I can tell this man is a true gentleman
Tried this for the first time a few years ago. I bled like a stuffed pig for quite a long time the first time. Now, through learning and doing it more, I do quite well with a safety razor. It offers the cleanest shave possible. However, one pass on the shave won't do it fully. You have to do two or three. If you are short on time, use an everyday razor. If not, then use a safety razor. Trust me, you'll love it once you get the technique down.
The Nivea after shave balm you suggested at 8:25 is amazing stuff and the only thing I use. And I know you say no aerosol shave creams, however this same product line has an awesome shaving cream that is made all natural and alcohol free. its in the Nivea sensitive skin line.

+ points, my wife absolutly loves it
I'm 23 thank you for teaching me what my dad couldn't glad to see I'm not the only one 😂
I get so many cuts with a straight razor. Especially if I just shaved the other day. Thinking about giving up. Any advice?
@@Pimpjit85Did You master a straight razor?
I have a shaver recently that belonged to my great grandfather that’s at least 80 years old and got Van Der Hagen blades from the store. Seems to work like a champ
I have thick facial hair and sensitive skin. I used to cut myself with gilettes all the time, and my barber refused to do a turkish shave for me because my skin was reddening up midway through. I bought a Safety Razor on a whim and since then I’ve had no issues. I sometimes even shave without cream, and even so i rarely cut anymore.
Hello, sir! I have the same problems as you did. May I know which razor and blades you use?
@@samxd3161 hello! Sorry I missed your message. I use a Feather AS-D2 handle with Rockwell blades. The handle is expensive but well worth it in the long run!
@@tokyoarrow Thank you! Also, if I may suggest something, try the Gillette Skinguard. It delivers on its promise of zero irritation. And I've heard it lasts long (I'm yet to ascertain that personally, since I'm still on my first cartridge). Have a great day!
@@samxd3161 Gillette Skinguard doesn't work for my sensitive skin, so no, it does not deliver on its promise. I'm now looking into a safety razor.
Prior to using a safety razor for your long term use of shaving, it is both wise and prudent to try the various brands of open razor blades. By trying out the various brands you will find a suitable solution for your type of skin and facial hair growth.
Three stages of shaving:
One.
The way this guy say *shave* is the main reason i keep coming back
This channel has got it all. I’d like to see a vid on gym wear and gym accessories such as bag, towel.
Tshirt, shorts, sneakers, towel, water bottle
Bam.
Everything looks good when you're jacked, so do that
M Arfa hahahah so true
just go shirtless with your veins popping out of your eyeballs. Make sure you get a good workout in before going to the gym so you look hella pumped before your workout at the gym. This is the key to looking good. No accessories necessary
Dont think these guys go gym tbh mate.
Never use aerosol cans
Me staring at my aerosol can
The cheapest tube of shaving cream is better than aerosol cans
I cant find decent soaps and brushes in my country so canned it is
That's what I'm using lol. The canned stuff loses its lubricating ability pretty quickly. I ordered Tailor of Old shaving cream in a jar so I'll see how well that works out for me.
@@rodrigoaranda7029 order online if you can. There's nothing good in retail stores by me either. It's all Gillette and Barbasol.
Thank you
I just started shaving with a DE safety razor and honestly I wish I had started 5 years ago
Styptic Pencil. Thank me later.
Did you try Vintage Gillettes yet? The Adjustables are really great!
Thank you for this. I always cut myself when shaving and having a double-edge razor this will make my next shave much more practical!
Traditional shaving can be so relaxing and about investing in you!;❤
Glad to hear using an electric first makes sense because we’ve done that forever to avoid snags or cuts. Thanks for the video ! Look forward to our close shaves.
I love watching these videos bc they are exactly what my dad taught me growing up
Bought a Solingen safety razor 10 years ago.
• Switched from cartridge to safety razor. First time - chopped myself up ! 😖
Glad I found this channel 💈
Occasionally I feel, well often I feel you are overboard, but your socks to pants and shoes, and your jacket are truly beautiful. Good on ya.
Before the quarentene i used to shave with a safety razor every week (thick beard, those razors work better in my face). now i just letting the beard grow to see were it gets LoL
I have a fairly thick beard how should I go about using it I did it my first time yesterday and it took quite a while
Great tutorial.
Thanks for this excellent and informative video. I’m switching from disposable razors to a safety razor, and this tutorial is just what I needed.
Thank you!
I just shaved with my Edwin Jagger razer for the first time: it was great. Thank you for the help.
Shaving against the hair growth is probably one of most satisfying about shaving. I love the baby smooth skin feel it gives after and love hearing blade cut the hair.
Couldn't do it on 1st pass or without trimming 1st tho or without hot shower
Snappy dresser. I like the wardrobe description at the end because even though most of us won't/can't dress that nice it's good to see what goes together well and why, so we're better prepared for the special occasions when we can or should dress extra well.
I haven't used any shaving cream or gel in decades. I use the same hair conditioner for shaving gat I use after I shampoo. It works great and leaves my skin soft and smooth. Never any razor burn or irritation.
Old is Gold ❤
Very helpful information on how to get the best shave. I learned more about shaving in this video than I have in anything else I’ve seen on UA-cam. Great job! Thanks for sharing.
4:32 Edwin Jagger from the English shaving company, hand made in Sheffield UK - excellent razors!
Just got a nice shaving kit for Christmas and my god it is such a great gift i dont think I'll go back to a regular razor it was such a great shave
Followed the instructions before my first time using an aggressive razor with excellent results 😀.
An old guy with swirls in his beard just moved to a Panasonic Arc4 last month and love it. Good enough for me.. Cheers enjoy.
I love this guy! The detail, presentation and his voice! Spot on! My man got some style too 👊🏼
My facial hair growth always required me to shave every morning and noon in order to maintain the clean-shaven appearance.
I literally have to shave in one hour, thank you
These videos by Gentleman’s Gazette got me started using a safety razor in 2020.
I have already watched your previous shaving videos, multiple times! a new informative video is always welcomed. Thanks Raphael.
I just got my first safety razor. Used it for the first time today. Not so good. I have a lot to learn. Thanks for this video!
I don't understand why this channel hasn't got 10m subscribers yet...
Shaved today.
Edwin Jagger DE 89L Razor
Bolzano Superinox DE blades
La Maison Du Barbier Brush
Acca Cappa almond shaving soap (hard)
Razo Rock Amici After Shave Splash
I used to buy Mach 3. The Bolzano blades aren't cheap, but you can use them for 5-8 shaves. I also use Astra blades for 3-4 shaves. The money I save is ridiculous. The satisfaction I get is incredible.
I love the Nivea Balm. It does not have a strong scent like the other ones, and thats a win for me.
This was the best tutorial I have seen about shave your beard with razor and save time..😊 I really must try it. Thanks man.
Why I'll never go back to disposable and cartridge razor - Plastic, a lot of plastic
Also proprietary. double edged blades can be bought from anyone.
How is most of the time that plastic is going to end up in the ocean anyways
it is 100 x cheaper thats my reason i am broke af but i like straight razorz more than saftey razorz
I honestly have no clue how disposable razors ever got popular.
domination of Gillette with a bunch of marketing
I didn't have a more smoother result at my armpits lastly!
thank you......... have been using one of these for about a year now and this helped with my last shave.
Thanks a lot for such informative video, last month I stopped using Gezillate blade all in one .
I started using double edge razors with shaving, and I rembered my father he was in military he was using same traditional shavings same way your video.
Thanks!!
appreciate the honesty shared about how difficult/time-taking a DE razor can be 👍
this was a really good tutorial, i always thought pulling the skin tight and shaving to cut the hairs under the skin makes ingrown hairs , so ive never really done it that way..
I'm a 19yr old girl. Just bought a safety razor. I'm so excited
I shave every 2 days for 32 years now and always using aerosol and honestly I never had an issue shaving a side from dull blades. I will try to switch from Razor Mach 3 to safety razor but I don’t see my self using anything but aerosol (I’ve used plain soap on some emergency occasions as well)
I totally agree that wet electric shaver is a must have and has to be used first this way your razor blades last up to 2-3 month each.
Yo this dude knows what he’s talking about 10 out of 10
Bought one off this video, very pleased with the quality of a razor blade.
I have been wet shaving for 5years now and shave every morning as it is my me time and the no stress part of my day
My father swears on Gillete and cheap supermarket electric shavers. I will show him this video and maybe prove him wrong.
Sretan 1. maj druže!
My father is stuck on gillete too!
@@garyyyy Mine is scared of cutting himself hehe!
How did it go?
How did it go?
Just did it wrong, that’s why I‘m here. Thank you so much!
This guy's voice is butter.
I have been using the same Merkur safety razor for more than 15 years. I reccomend it for sure.
I normally get tired of these “gentleman” videos and products because they’ve become such a cliche and really misrepresent the archetype… but I can tell this man is a true gentleman
yah, all this seems like a cult to me
just got my first safety razor today! cant wait to use it in the morning. thank you for this helpful video
Great video! It peaked my interest enough to try this out and I'm really happy with the results. Thanks for the tips.
The Nivea after shave balm you suggested at 8:25 is amazing stuff and the only thing I use. And I know you say no aerosol shave creams, however this same product line has an awesome shaving cream that is made all natural and alcohol free. its in the Nivea sensitive skin line.
Thanks so much!
Thanks for all the videos about shaving. I have yet to receive my ordered safety razor and cant wait to finally walk around with a clean shave!
