As a former barber, even to me, you're good at classical shaving. I still use a regular razor. Like you.. I'm going to try a classic razor now. Let's be confident!!
First time i tried using a straight i listened to some bad advice on another video on how to angle the blade. Now i know to keep the spine close to the face!
After a lifetime of shaving with a safety razor, my son showed me his open razor, and I decided to give it a try. Thanks for the " No nonsense" video. Now shaving is no longer an irritating chore. It's an adventure every time! Thanks for the simple instructions!:
After 20 years of DE I would like to start a new adventure with straight and this video gave me the right boost. I want try … step by step I hope I can do it Very helpful video Best from Italy friend
What helped me to learn the proper holds and how to feel where the blade was on my face was to use a butter knife. Use the spine side of a butter knife and slide that along your face as if it was a straight razor. Do this until you are able to maintain a 30 degree angle across the different parts of your face and neck. Learn to feel where the end of the blade is, this will keep you from slicing your ear when you are using the razor. Learn to hold the "razor" (butter knife) with a delicate but still in control grip that uses just your finger tips. Once you think you've got it, lather up and practice some more with the butter knife; this time learning how to stretch your skin and how much you can shave before you have to wipe lather off your "razor". Best wishes from Phoenix, AZ.
You can also use a chavette without a blade to practice, then a blade from a safety razor that has already been used a number of times in the chavette and keep practicing! A chavette is not expensive and you learn to hold it comfortably against your face
My cousin's dad was a deadbeat and he (my cousin) ended up being one of the best dads in the world. It was like my cousin wanted to make sure that someone else didn't have to go through what he went through. I always felt like that was challenging for a young man to go through.
My dad shaved with an ordanry razor so I had no one to teach me either, I've ordered my first straight razor (cut throath) and its arriving between 18th and 24th of may but I'm not going to start using it until after my 56th birthday in July because I want to live to see it🙂
They don't even teach soldiers to use double edge safety razors and expect them to shave every day. Millions of military personnel are shaving everyday using overpriced cartridge razors everyday
I just got my first straight razor and I'm excited to try it out. I won't be doing my whole face because I've had a beard and mustache most of my adult life and this will just be for the neck and a little cheek work. Thanks for the well done video.
Me too I have a beard too and I haven't made up my mind wheather to shave it completly or just use my straight razor to trim it as the electric beard trimmer burns my neck and doesn't do a great job either on neck or cheeks.
My goodness! I did everything wrong! I used it one time and was carved up worse than a Christmas ham! It was horrible! I thought it was just good ole common sense. There is obviously a technique. My straight razor is sitting in the far back corner of my drawer. Once and a while I get a glimpse of it and am overcome with a sense of abject terror! Now however after watching your video I think I'm gonna give it another shot. I will take your advice and just tackle my cheeks. I think that was excellent advice. At this point, I don't feel I need it anywhere close to my juggler! Lol. Thank you for the informative video. I really enjoyed and learned a lot from it.
Hold the straight razor flat against your jaw, and lift the back only 10 to 15 degrees! use small gentle movements with taut skin. Afterwards you can still adjust the angle if you can perform the shaving movements smoothly without hesitation!
Reminds me of when I started shaving, I had just a regular razor and cheeks sideburns were fine but nearly cut my throath nearest I ever got to butchering anything but when I got back up to the kitchen my father asked me WTF happen you did someone try to cut your throath. Hopefully my first experience with a straight razor (cut throath) will be better but if not no harm done

Great tutorial. I just got my first straight razor as a birthday gift from my partner a couple of minutes ago. I like that you recommend using it on your cheeks only until you're 100% comfy with holding it correctly. That's such sane advice. Before you start your shave should you do the.hot towel thing? And what's the correct way to look after your blade? Do you just rinse and dry it off? How often are you meant to sharpen it? And how do you sharpen it? Do I need to buy a strop?
Thank you very much for your information . One important point to keep in mind is that the sharpness of blade is doing the job . But it needs a style to not cut it so press gently , your beard in not wire brush . Soft touch is the key word and easy does it .
My adventures with shaving...started preeeetty young, When I was a kid I had a toy shaving kit that had a plastic double edge safety razor..this was back in the 90's btw. My grandpa taught me how to shave using that but he moved on to cartridge razors and later on when I actually needed to start shaving I did too. Then one day I decided to try the ol' DE razor again and pulled out my great grandpa's adjustable slim one from Gillette that he had way back in the day. Never went back to cartridges after that and stopped using canned shaving cream that has propellant. Then 3 years ago I got my first hot towel straight razor shave...hard as hell to find a place that does it where I live and there are only 3 of them. I enjoyed the shave so much that even though I had decided to grow a beard again after the major lockdowns calmed down in my state I bought a straight razor with replaceable blades to keep everything lined up and neat...been using one ever since. Though I DID make a big mistake not long ago and got a little careless...now I have a vertical scar on my face the length of a DE razor blade from a bad angel, it's not deep enough to need stitches but it's gonna take awhile to fade if it ever does...I'll likely be in my late 40's before it fades to the point it's hard to see without the right light...overall though? I have had LESS cuts and nicks with the straight edge than I had with the safety razor lol, and nobody taught me how to shave with one...I learned by watching ASMR shaving videos and picked up techniques from professional barbers in those vids to get the general idea....rest was all trial and error...staring with a DE safety razor did help though as I had experience with a single blade rather than the multi ones favored by cartridges.
Thanks I have a lot of trouble getting my mustache area for some reason the blade skips a lot, it’s a new razor but probably not a good one. I supplement it with a safety razor which is 10 times easier to shave with. Could it be my technique or likely a dull blade? I’m also getting a closer shave with the safety razor on my cheeks as well
Very informative, the location and placement of spine was good info . I had to self teach and learn this after a few cuts , the discipline of slowing down to shave and enjoy the experience was a bit of a task for me , since i.move fast in most areas of my day .
Did my first shavette shave today. Costed about 15$ on Amazon with 100 blades. I got less cuts on my face then when using my safety razor. Got an amazing cut but then I started to get frustrated when I got to the upper chin above the Adams apple onto the chin, under the lip, and the mustache was very difficult to get does just felt like I couldn't figure out how to cut it properly. I ended up giving up on the mustache and grabbing my safety razor for the mustache
First time I went straight for the neck against the grain. Lol. Didn't come out as bad as I thought. Turns out as long as you go in there with confidence n the right angle you're good.

Also, I’ve watched a couple of vids on this and everyone just shaves down, does direction of the grain matter? Especially around the Adam’s Apple because I want to use the razor for lining up. When I have a beard, I use one to trim stuff up at the top of my cheeks and mustache, and it works the best. Overall, they’re awesome, of course it’s all preference. Try it, and if you don’t like it, try it again, and if you don’t like it even then, I guess go back to using cartridge style razors, that’s okay too
I have a very sharp jawline and getting that section around the jaw bone where your neck meets your cheek is near impossible and I always end up cutting myself because it's like trying to shave a 90 degree slope lol. But one tip I heard and works for frequent shavers is to use hair conditioner instead of shaving foam or gel, if your face hair isn't long and just stubbly it can help a lot.
Well Iv been using a straight cut throat razor for a couple of months now and I go from south to North as it's alot smoother after Iv tried north to south and it doesn't seem as smooth
my personal experience is around 30 shaves not to stress yourself to death; and around a 100 or so to become proficient. after that it just keeps getting better. Once a week shaving will slow down your learning curve. regards dapper shaves
After 70 years on the planet Earth - among these 8 with a DE-razor in my hand every morning - I simply must try it. Tomorrow morning I shall follow your wise advice about just shaving the cheeks. By the way, have you seen the movie 'There Will Be Blood'? ;-)
Great video. Managed a full shave without cutting myself. Wouldve been helpful to mention that u have to break my blades in half btw i wasted a good 5 minutes trying to put the whole thing into the handle 😂
im new to this , i just tried a shavette for the first time and i cut my face open and my skin was hurting due to scraping , i must have done something wrong , is a straight razor better than a shavette
Shavettes are totally different from straights. You have to use small movements and "buff" the blade by doing short quick strokes over a small area at a time. Straight razors have an edge that almost can move around the skin so you can do longer blade strokes. Hope this helped.
But in short yes straights are better than shavettes. They're less wasteful because no replacement blades are required, and they have more heft so you can let the blade do more of the work for you and not worry as much about using the right amount of pressure
Wow, wow, wow! What a depurated technique! #respect 🙌🏻 As a woman, I choose to remove ALL my facial peach fuzz, redesign my hairline shape, sharp my brows and physically exfoliate my skin (aka dermaplaning) with a razor. It' s become kinda popular lately with the internet but done with shitty scratchy plastic disposable mini kamisori against the growing direction🤦🏻♀️😣. NOTHING compares to a freshly snapped Merkur Super Platinum. Well, yes, the face expressions and comments of other women when I tell them that my bright smooth skin is the result of just two skincare products and 25 years of weekly shaving😆🤣🤣🤣.
I have now tried it. Having almost cut my right ear off a la Van Gogh during the first minute I decided to throw the shavette and all the blades in the metal bin. Otherwise I'd never live to be 71. I stick to my Henson safety razor.
First time I ever attempted a straight razor shave, I came out looking like I was in a knife fight. This was a huge help.

A more comfortable shave, once your technique is down. There's no getting around the fact that a straight razor gives a better shave, when honed properly, than a DE or SE razor.
@Vijay Surya That's not at all true, but maybe you haven't been able to get the technique down for a straight so I understand your comment.
a well honed natural edge on a straight razor is a lot smoother and comfortable than any DE blade, at least for me. regards dapper shaves

You can definitely shave against the grain with a straight razor, however it is recommended to get comfortable with the with-the-grain pass first.
What is the diferrence between straight razor and a shavette ? Can please anyone explain it ?
A shavette uses a DE blade, broken in half, and inserted into the shavette. A straight razor is one solid piece of steel that's sharpened on the edge.

Great, thanks.
No problem
I tried to shave my left side with my right arm ended up cutting myself thanks dude i appreciate this video haha
I have a very sharp jawline and getting that section around the jaw bone where your neck meets your cheek is near impossible and I always end up cutting myself because it's like trying to shave a 90 degree slope lol. But one tip I heard and works for frequent shavers is to use hair conditioner instead of shaving foam or gel, if your face hair isn't long and just stubbly it can help a lot.
finally a straight razor video with an actual sr not a shavette
Thanks for watching!
Well Iv been using a straight cut throat razor for a couple of months now and I go from south to North as it's alot smoother after Iv tried north to south and it doesn't seem as smooth
whats the model of that straight razor your using? thanks
i have one of these though mine uses disposable blades need to respect it cause the amount of times ive cut myself with it wasnt fun
How LONG, would you estimate, it would take to get comfortable/decent with a straight razor? 🤔💈
Ant Espo says 30-50 shaves. I'd say 20-40.
my personal experience is around 30 shaves not to stress yourself to death; and around a 100 or so to become proficient. after that it just keeps getting better. Once a week shaving will slow down your learning curve. regards dapper shaves
Nicely done ✅
Thank you 😌
Nice thanks for sharing
What razor is this?
bro looking clean
How long does a straight razor last?
It will last you a lifetime with proper care.
Thanks
thank you.
watched this in my geology lesson thanks!
Hey, pay attention in class! 😅 Glad you found the video though!
After 70 years on the planet Earth - among these 8 with a DE-razor in my hand every morning - I simply must try it. Tomorrow morning I shall follow your wise advice about just shaving the cheeks. By the way, have you seen the movie 'There Will Be Blood'? ;-)
my right side looks clean... My left side came out of the uk
funny. daily straight shaver here. regards dapper shaves
Just keep working at it and you'll get better and better 😀
@@RealTalkThomas great vid. regards dapper shaves (south africa)
@@dappershaves thank you, sir
Swallowing the adam'a apple was the trick i was looking for. Thanks for that.
Nice video bro 👌
Good video, I don't see the difference pass wise vs a cartridge, it's about the same. I thought it would delete all hair on one pass.
Thank you bro love from India 🇮🇳😊
this guy is just seth rogan but he likes shaving
ASMR starts from 7:00
I shave with a Merkur double edge safety razor.
Thank you bro❤
Great video. Managed a full shave without cutting myself. Wouldve been helpful to mention that u have to break my blades in half btw i wasted a good 5 minutes trying to put the whole thing into the handle 😂
Excellent tutorial 👏
Thank you, sir!
im new to this , i just tried a shavette for the first time and i cut my face open and my skin was hurting due to scraping , i must have done something wrong , is a straight razor better than a shavette
Thank you
4:16 tragus. Learned that in anatomy.

I wish I watched this before I cut myself instead of after lmao
What a lather!
I now am like scar face. I wish I had washed this. Mind you people think I look like a hitman
I carry one with me at all times
😳 well, okay
2 fingers in the front and 2 in the back 🖖😆😆😆
I have now tried it. Having almost cut my right ear off a la Van Gogh during the first minute I decided to throw the shavette and all the blades in the metal bin. Otherwise I'd never live to be 71. I stick to my Henson safety razor.
I just did the same thing. I’m so devastated I lost my beard that took me 6 months to grow! Stay as far away from these blades as possible
Here for the crunch sound. 😂
This guy has a face MADE for shaving
Adam's-apple-retraction and cheek-puffing were new to me.
Approaches to upper lip are still challenging; wouldn't mind seeing more on that.
I tried it once before, I feel scared once it touch my neck actually :D
