I just recently threw my cartridge razors away and have been shaving my head with a straight razor!!! Man the difference is so amazing plus the thought of doing it with a straight razor is so cool. Thanks for the videos they have taught my so much
thanks again for doing this. I have been straight razor and double edge shaving since 2013 and your videos (along with the other usual suspects) have helped me a ton.
Thanks to you and many others I’ve made the switch to a shavette and had my first shave with it today. For me at least I’d look through comments seeing everyone’s first shave and mine went out way better than I expected; only got 2 nicks that I didn’t feel because of how relaxing the shave was. Because of you I got to learn how to use a shavette(I call it a convenient straight razor) and properly prepare for the shave. Thank you, god bless you. Edit: spelling error
Shaving with a straight razor is how it was done before safety razors, then cartridges came along. Some of my favorite movie scenes feature straight razor shaving!
Funny, I'm watching the vid and without realizing it, I'm making my face do the "shave" faces. I've found my face and neck don't care for 3 passes, but I can do the wtg/xtg daily w/o probs. Also, my beard (whiskers) change direction half way up my neck. On the first pass, I shave down to about halfway, and then shave up from the base of the neck. Great vid and I appreciate all your work for wet shaving!
Hi Jim. So right. On my neck the hair grows off in several different directions. That's why it may not come off easily on one pass, but the next pass form another direction removes it easily. You gotta attack it from different angles.
Outstanding! I used to watch my Grandfather shave his "whiskers" with a straight razor. I have tried one of his straight razors & enjoy the challenge, but time consuming. Every morning I have been using his 2 piece sterling silver shaving mug. I put hot water in the bottom & TOBS in the top section. This keeps the lather nice & warm. Take care!
I love your videos fat. You inspired me to switch to safety razors. Not only that, I'm a big fan of the channel. You're a funny guy! Thanks for the relaxing videos.
@@geofatboy Thanks, Geo. Just recently, I saw a new video of yours in which your smile decorates. It's good to see you in great form and happy when you make your videos. The humor and light touches are always cool. Keep on, Geo.
Thanks so much Eddy-I used to hang in Jeff park when I was a youngster. Played football at Portage park. Baseball at Norwood park. Gotta get those ribs at Gale Street Inn! Num Num... Tried to stay out of that place on Gale Street... Great area! All the best to you and yours.
I am a fan of Proraso products too. Their pre-shave product has a new formulization (July 2022). Rather than the waxy-like substance you show, the new stuff is very loose, kind of like dipping your fingers in cool whip. I will use it up faster.
Get straight shave. I’m working on my technique and appreciate good video. I actually broke my straight out today and was fairly successful- just a couple of nicks - but getting more comfortable using the razor with both hands. Enjoy the holidays and Happy New Year!
Well bro, I went to turkey many times, got the shave by a really old bloke, impressive, he did a hot shave and chilled shave, I think that you just aced that experience! So sad to to see that you were unable to give yourself the neck and shoulder massage that he finished the shave off with! To make the shave “outstanding”! I am having a laugh! Brilliant tutorial bro! Your work is exceptional, kind regards Tim
Nice instructional video. Given your tough whiskers, looks like you might benefit from a "sharper" hone/edge in that razor....it looked like it skipped a bit in your chin/upper lip.... but with your technique, you managed to get a close shave. I tend to abort if I get jumping...as I fear a face cut....
Hi Geo- Great straight razor shave; thank you! Great instruction and technique from start to finish. Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas.🎄All the best in 2020!
Love the vids geofatboy.have been watching for a long time now.i sent an email to shave nation about selling my stones and razors as I love my single safety razor.hope to hear back.thanks-cory
I really want to learn with a straight razor. Is it more forgiving than a shavette? I have a Dovo shavette, and it scares the shit out of me. I figured not to fuss with honing and stropping. But after a couple serious nicks attempts going against the grain, I use the shavette strictly for with the grain pass, and switch to my DE for the rest.
As always great video got a question for you is it safe and possible to use a straight razor with just your right hand controlling the razor as I lack the dexterity to use it in left hand.
Hey Geo I am having trouble with my Arko lather drying and flaking on my face before I can finish my shave. I have tried adding more and less soap as well as more and less water with no success. Any suggestions?
Sir, this is a very busy time of year for me but after all my Christmas deliveries I'm going to shave my whisker's. It's been many a long year since I've seen my face, but I've hinted to Mrs Claus to get me a Shave Nation razor for Christmas....All the very best to you....Ho Ho Ho. Santa!
Geo what is your preferred method of shaving? Like what is your go to when you have your daily/weekly shaves? I'm going to try a safety razor soon but wondered if that's the best way to achieve quality shaves.
Ok so.. I have oily skin and regular aftershave lotions or creams really block my pores after the shave, is there any lotions for oily skin types? I really love your instructional videos I’ve learned a lot about straight razor shaving
Hi Juan, Try Thayers Astringents (contain alcohol) and Toners (alcohol free) they are light and won't block your pores. Great for pre-shave cleaning and aftershave. shavenation.com/collections/thayers
hey geo thumbs up for the great shave. do you have a tip for getting close in the moustache area? i can get bbs pretty much everywhere except my moustache but it always remains gray really bugs me out :(
It’s crazy…your face before shaving looks like a finished job with a modern razor. But after the shave with the straight razor, it’s completely gone. I’m definitely going to make the change. May start with a safety razor first.
I would get a straight razor but its not worth it to me for the stropping and all the up keep I'm perfectly content with a twin blade disposalble razor it gets dull toss it easy peasy got things to do.
So I switch to de shaving about 2-3 month ago. I have the Parker variant. I am looking to get something more aggressive because I have some spots that just take to many passes to that bbs shave. Using feather blades and love em’. But I’m debating between a R41 or a straight razor? I don’t have a thick beard but I have very thick coarse whiskers. What do I do GEO?
I normally do like 5+for the first pass 4 for the second and 2-3 for the 3rd. I have a bit of trouble with the 3rd pass and a lot of blade gap. Maybe my angle of pressure. But I tried every angle and don’t typically get any irritation. After the 3rd pass I still don’t get bbs.
This may sound counterintuitive, but I suggest a straight razor. The feather blades are awesome, but can be a bit too aggressive, even with a safety. I use a straight practically daily now, and it lets me go against the grain without any of the burn or cuts I get from DE blades. But ofc, that takes time and practice. Good luck though!👍
Geo, have you ever shaved with a safety razor, and when you were done, and you rubbed your face and felt no stubble? If so what razor did you use and I will buy it. I I always feel stubble. It is never smoothe shave like when I shave with a 3 blade razor Any help would be appreciated. Love your videos
What safety razors have you used? Adjustable or super-aggressive razors work well for me, but it seems razors with thicker blades provide a more comfortable, closer and longer lasting shave. I'd name a specific razor (or another one I haven't tried), but Shave Nation doesn't offer either. Still, even after using that razor, I usually end up using one of the super aggressive razors for cleaning up trouble spots. Learning with an adjustable razor seems like a much better option than starting with an Edwin Jagger DE89 or Merkur 34C.
You should not go against the grain in your mustache area. That is known as a fool's pass. Probably due to the risk of cutting your nose. Just go with the grain or across the grain in that area. Good luck.

Definitely wouldn't recommend going against the grain on your first pass, it'll be too hard on your razor and it'll be terrible for your skin
